Maranui had 12 senior athletes competing. The team came home with 4 gold, 7 Silver and 5 bronze medals. Holly Reynolds dominated in the U19 womens. Smoking her opposition in the iron woman and board taking golds then silver in the Run Swim Run and surf race and ski race. The team did really well in team events with a bronze in the U17 mens tube rescue, Silver in the U19 women's tube rescue, Gold in the U19 women's beach sprint relay. Amelia and Ella took silver and bronze in the 2km run, Bruno took bronze in the U17 beach sprint and Joe took bronze in the U15 beach sprint, silver in 2km & boys U17 silver in beach relay. There were other good results that can be seen on Waves. Our young participants showed the Maranui values coming away with several medals and putting the club 7th overall in our region. Well done everyone. Last week we had our annual trip to Papamoa with the development team and tamariki planning to attend Oceans. What an amazing week. Training with local clubs Papamoa & Mount Maunganui helps the development of skills in conditions we can’t provide in Wellington. The coaches were super proud of the effort, resilience and confidence our team showed, even when a large fishy predator turned up. For all our U10s we have next years camp booked for 18-22nd January 2024 for anyone who wants to enjoy more time in the surf developing skills. Catch any of the development coaching team to discuss this programme if you are interested. A small team represented us at Riversdale carnival and I want to send a massive thanks to the parents who stepped up to make it happen for the kids. It’s our parent volunteers that make our club work. Junior surf restarts this Sunday, with a time change to 3.30pm start for all to allow for those participating in the Ocean swim. Sign in by 3.15pm. Abandoned crossing after southerly front rolls through early

- Operation Details Date/Time: Sat, 07/01/2023 - 07:30 - 10:15 Operation Type: CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted: 2 Total Volunteer Hours: 19 2 people in a small 3.5m dinghy were caught out by a southerly front coming through sooner than expected whilst fishing. They made the decision to abandon the return leg from Mana Island and took shelter on the island, calling Coastguard for assistance. They left their vessel anchored just off shore and swam to the beach where they waited. We nosed up on the gravel beach and picked them up. After ensuring they were in good health and providing them blankets to warm up, we approached the vessel near rocks and hooked the anchor line, pulling it up and out to deeper water. 6hr tow of yacht from Wellington south coast

- Operation Details Date/Time: Thu, 05/01/2023 - 09:30 - 21:30 Operation Type: CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted: 2 Total Volunteer Hours: 84 38ft steel yacht got it's anchor stuck near Makara/Ohau. Whilst manoeuvring to release it they overheated the engine. They were unable to sail due to low wind and inexperience, so ended up drifting south in the strong currents. By the time we got to them they had drifted 10NM into Cook Strait, south of Karori Rock through the Karori Rip. It took us 5hrs to tow them back to Mana, by which point the tide was at it's lowest point. We had to put them on the mooring just outside the bar and then return the passenger back to base, leaving the skipper aboard. - A regional park above Shelly Bay on the Miramar Peninsula? Or houses? Or is there room for both? A DomPost report today says that hundreds of new homes could be fast tracked on the Peninsula. Michael Daly writes that iwi Taranaki Whānui and developer Ian Cassels are applying for consent to build 600 to 700 houses on 8 hectares of the former Mt Crawford Prison which closed in 2012.

Wellington and Porirua buses to use Saturday timetables in January
- Metlink
- Most Metlink buses in Wellington city and Porirua will use their Saturday timetables on weekdays from 4 to 27 January. Routes 13, 28, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 12e, 30x and 31x will operate their normal weekday schedules during this period, while After Midnight services will also operate as normal on Saturday and Sunday mornings Services on routes 81 and 84 between Eastbourne and Wellington are suspended until 29 January. Routes 39 and 32x will also cease operation until 29 January, however, a shuttle will connect Island Bay and Houghton Bay at 10-minute intervals during the morning and evening peaks on weekdays. Metlink has reduced bus timetables in this way to give customers certainty. Because of the national bus driver shortage, and at a time when many of us, including drivers are taking leave, the reduced schedules will help operators meet demand and minimise unplanned cancellations.
