FAITH COSTS …
- Karori Baptist Church
- Barnabas Fund, a Christian ministry which seeks to support, help and encourage Christians who suffer discrimination, oppression and persecution as a consequence of their faith, has invited churches to designate one Sunday in November as ”Suffering Church Sunday”, and on that day to think about and pray for believers who suffer and even die because of their love for Jesus. That will be our focus in our services this morning. Imagine being fined for the “crime” of holding a Christian worship service in your home - and the fine for your first offence being the equivalent of 10 times the average wage for a month. That’s happening right now in Uzbekistan. Imagine having a powerful dream that convinced you that Jesus was real, and choosing to follow Him, and as a result experiencing a miraculous healing of a condition you’d suffered from for 16 years - and then your husband throwing you and your 8 children out of the house because of your new faith, and having nowhere to live and no way of feeding or caring for yourself or your children. That happened recently to a West African woman. Imagine being given low grades or failed in exams, simply because you were a Christian; this happens regularly in countries like Egypt and Pakistan. And in Burma, Christian parents are promised education for their children if they will convert to Buddhism. These things are happening to our Christian brothers and sisters. It is important that we remember them, pray for them, and support them in whatever practical ways we can. To find out more, check out the Barnabas Fund website: www.barnabasfund.org

People's Empire
- The Wellingtonista
- Newtown may or may not be a bit shit, but their right-on coffee company People's Coffee (sorry, I couldn't resist adding the apostrophe) certainly know their shit. Their presence in central Wellington is expanding, and two recently-opened cafés proudly stock the People's brand: Meow and Mon Ami.

Aro Valley multi-candidate meeting
- Last night’s Aro valley meeting was a pleasure. It was superbly organised. The Chair (Bryan Crump) was well chosen, and there was a persistent current of good humour outlasting nastiness. There may be relief in my pleasure because all of us candidates know in advance that our only required role is to be the target of audience wit.

2008 Aro Valley Meet the Candidates Event
- The most infamous election event in the nation takes place in the tiny community hall off Aro Street. The hall is standing room only with more crowds (known throughout the evening as ‘the outsiders’) peering in through the windows. Radio New Zealand announcer Bryan Crump has taken the evening off work to act as moderator – he warns the crowd that while heckling is encouraged he will not tolerate any ‘Hooton’s’. Each candidate will have two minutes to speak. Ninety seconds in someone will sound a gong, at two minutes they will thump the keys of a rickety old piano standing near the stage. If the candidate continues to speak they will be drenched with a high-powered water-pistol.

Recent Activities at the Club
- Waikanae Golf Club
- On Wednesday 8th October, a group of volunteers planted the stream bank infront of the Clubhouse. This should help maintain the stream bank and shade the stream to help reduce weed growth. Thanks to the many supporters of the Club for their donations to the Conservation Committee that enabled this project to happen. Native plants have also been planted along the left hand side of the first fairway and on the hill adjacent to the 12th green. Further plantings are planned on the 12th hill when further donations are received. Also: Mike Tribe and Anthony Kelly have painted the exterior of the Women’s Matchroom and the Cart Shed to match the colours of the rest of the Clubhouse. John Plimmer and a team have completed the task of tidying up the entrance foyer with Mike and Anthony giving the area a repaint.

Design for the sun
- Eye of the Fish
- Following on from the previous post, where we had observed how good Wellington can get on a nice day (not so good today, unfortunately), there were a few photos left over that we just had to use. There seems to be a few simple principles at work here for successful public space design in general, but throughout the waterfront especially.

Support needed for Cobham Park indoor sports stadium
- St Mary's Old Girls Netball Club (SMOG)
- The Cobham Park indoor sports stadium is going through the notified resource consent process and we need as many submissions as possible in support of this project. The indoor facility will be a fantastic asset for netball in Wellington, and will save us from playing in all the horrible winter weather.
