    • People's Empire
      • Newtown may or may not be a bit shit, but their right-on coffee company People's Coffee (sorry, I couldn't resist adding the apostrophe) certainly know their shit. Their presence in central Wellington is expanding, and two recently-opened cafés proudly stock the People's brand: Meow and Mon Ami.

    • Aro Valley multi-candidate meeting
      • Last night’s Aro valley meeting was a pleasure. It was superbly organised. The Chair (Bryan Crump) was well chosen, and there was a persistent current of good humour outlasting nastiness. There may be relief in my pleasure because all of us candidates know in advance that our only required role is to be the target of audience wit.

    • 2008 Aro Valley Meet the Candidates Event
      • The most infamous election event in the nation takes place in the tiny community hall off Aro Street. The hall is standing room only with more crowds (known throughout the evening as ‘the outsiders’) peering in through the windows. Radio New Zealand announcer Bryan Crump has taken the evening off work to act as moderator – he warns the crowd that while heckling is encouraged he will not tolerate any ‘Hooton’s’. Each candidate will have two minutes to speak. Ninety seconds in someone will sound a gong, at two minutes they will thump the keys of a rickety old piano standing near the stage. If the candidate continues to speak they will be drenched with a high-powered water-pistol.

    • One more sleep till Craft2.0
      • Craft2.0 springs into the shopping season by returning to TheNewDowse on October 11th with a Craftastic Craftacular (don’t ask us what that means, but pretty much beyond fabulous is a good definition) There are over 60 crafters this time round and as always there is a mix of returning favourite crafters and brand shiny new ones.

    • Design for the sun
      • Following on from the previous post, where we had observed how good Wellington can get on a nice day (not so good today, unfortunately), there were a few photos left over that we just had to use. There seems to be a few simple principles at work here for successful public space design in general, but throughout the waterfront especially.
