Nats chilly on Hutt train-building
- Petone Herald
- Will Nats slam door on train-building boost for Hutt? A $200,000 report on the feasibility of building locomotives in Woburn might get buried if National gains power in this year’s elections. Finance Minister Michael Cullen announced the report last week as part of an $80 million package upgrading the re-nationalised rail service.

From Mike’s Desk …
- Karori Baptist Church
- This week has been birthday week in the Enright household. In a period of four days, we have celebrated the birthdays of three of our daughters! This has reminded me of two important things … Firstly, I’ve been reminded what a precious gift family is, and how good it is to celebrate together the milestones in the lives of family members.

Premier v Karori - 26/07/2008 - L 8-3
- Island Bay United AFC
- Up 1-0 within 2 minutes, only to be 2-1 down at half-time and absolutely thrashed 8-3 at the end of 90 minutes by a waterside team desperate to stay up, and who's commitment to that task coupled with some great touches constantly overpowered our midfield and defense.

SAREX Makara South Coast Exercise July 26-27 2008
- Wellington VHF Group
- This was a weekend SAREX designed to test comms on the South Coast, as well as the ability of the teams to handle the conditions! And with the "10 Year Storm" going on, it was a test. A lot of work had gone in over the week before to get the new cross band repeaters built, as you would have read in Q-Bit. These were installed on Mt Misery on the Saturday morning. The base was set up and the teams dispatched. We did a HF radio test with a Pulsar, and learnt a few things about getting wet. read more

Talking 'bout the weather
- The Wellingtonista
- Apparently all hell is breaking loose in the Hutt: rumours of heavy rain warnings abound, and messages are going around offices advising people living in Eastbourne to head home NOW. Certainly the radar shows some nasty stuff around, the result of the southerly making its way northwards, and the rainfall sensors and stream flows are starting to pick up. If anything dramatic starts to happen, do let us all know!

Farewell to this land’s cheerless marshes
- Karori Slapperz AFC
- In true Wellington Council style, the games that they should axe go ahead and visa versa, so it was with no surprise that following torrential rain on Friday night and Saturday morning we’d be playing. Now I ain’t grumbling about it, cos we ain’t played since 26th June and anymore cancellations means that we have to play ‘double headers’ (Saturdays and Sundays). So I was as happy as an octopus with sixteen legs and given the state of the water on the park, maybe being a cephalopod would have faired well.

Wynton Rufer Tournament Update
- Stop Out Sports Club
- To All Junior Clubs. It is with great regret that Stop Out have decided to postpone the 14th Wynton Rufer tournament for August / September 2008. The impact of weather on the ground availability this season is clear to all of us involved in sport. Stop Out have worked very hard with Excel and with schools and colleges to come up with a viable alternative proposal, but it has proved impossible.

What's happening with Crossways and the Campaign?
- Keep Crossways Community House
- There has been some confusion about the current goings on around Crossways and whether the community is going to be able to keep our community house. The Crossways Community Trust made an offer to purchase the property for $1.2m based on an independent valuation. The church hopes to settle the sale of the house in October and has just announced the property will go to tender. The council is

Wagamama joins Mojo at Kumutoto
- Eye of the Fish
- In what appears to be one of Wellington’s more anticipated restaurant openings for years, a branch of the international noodle bar Wagamama has opened in the Meridian building, and already queues are forming out the door: indeed, breaking all Australasian records for turnover in a first week, despite it being the middle of a very bleak winter. It evidently has been a phenomenal success.

- Mountainbikers braved cold southerly conditions at Makara Peak today - including an Aucklander! Claude Dabaliz flew down specially for the event, as he did for the MTBO Series opener three weeks ago. Karori was not as bad as elsewhere in the region, and planners Andrew McLellan and John Randal shortened the courses at the last minute to stay off the tops.
