Trams or trains – what 3 studies proposed
- Wellington Scoop
- The reality of the noise problem on Johnsonville trains (which brought complaints last week) is that the heavy rail electric multiple units which provide the service are at their limits on the line, although it now has the best on-time performance of any rail line in Wellington – 94%, even with the clapped-out English Electrics that were in use till June.

The new Newtown Countdown
- Cycling in Wellington
- So the new Countdown opened today in Newtown. Have you been there yet? Looks pretty fancy. It’s the reason cycling through Newtown has been even more like a video game than usual. I thought I’d check it out on my way home, as I needed a loaf of bread anyway. Luckily, I was in my car today, as the new Countdown doesn’t seem to cater for cyclists. I know it’s been discussed amongst many in the neighbourhood and the cycling community, what a nuisance the roadworks have been, how they’ve endangered pedestrians and cyclists, how they don’t seem to have thought much about congestion, etc. etc. I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised once it opened. I was not.

Reactivating a bus stop
- Sustainable Wellington Transport
- Bus stop 7918 was closed during the construction of the Countdown store in Newtown. I don’t remember how long it was down for, but it was a significant length of time. With the store opening today, I’d asked Metlink when the stop would be reopening. I think we were both surprised by the answer: Also today. Encouraged by this, I went down to the stop this morning and caught the next bus coming along. The driver insisted that the stop wasn’t open yet. The paint is down and the sign is up, but the bus stop isn’t really a bus stop. She let us on anyway.

The landlord mentality on the waterfront
- Wellington Scoop
- I applaud the sentiments of Lowry Bay resident Tony Cranston, whose letter about the Wellington waterfront earned top position in the DomPost yesterday. He wrote: On Wednesday, walking around the waterfront I was again impressed by its beautiful views. Wellington is very lucky to have a waterfront where one is constantly struck by the views of harbour, houses and hills on one side, and an attractive city on the other. Why the council prefers mediocre buildings to this natural beauty is a mystery. The latest example of what I call developers’ vandalism hits you right in the face as you approach Te Papa. The “conversion” of the Overseas Passenger Terminal will clearly be an over-sized monstrosity, obliterating much of Mt Victoria and its charming houses; it will tower over the marine like Darth Vader and destroy a lot of the character of that part of the waterfront. Might more councillors find some soul and save the waterfront from this landlord mentality before it’s too late?"
