Cuba Street has time on its side
- Wellington City Council
- We all know - and mostly love - Cuba Street, but not many of us are familiar with the street name's origin. Despite having popular local haunts like Havana Bar and Fidel’s Café related to the country of Cuba, it’s actually named after an early settler ship called Cuba, which arrived on our fair shores in 1840.

- The altar from Wellington’s landmark St Gerard’s Church and Monastery has been given to the city’s Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral for future use. St Gerard’s former owner, the Institute for World Evangelisation (ICPE Mission), has been finding new homes for furniture and other items after selling the earthquake-prone buildings in March. Particular attention was given to sacred items, many of which have historical value to the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington.

Mount Street Cemetery
- The Mount Street Cemetery was the first cemetery in Wellington for Catholic burials and contains the graves of the first nuns and priests in Wellington. It remained open until 1891 although burials continued in existing family plots until 1954. The earliest surviving grave marker dates from 1851, and the latest from 1954. Although only around 200 headstones survive, it is estimated that there could have been as many as 750 to 800 burials. Many of the early markers were simple wooden crosses, which have long since vanished.
