Councils back Government decision on Wellington’s Mass Rapid Transport future
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- Greater Wellington and Wellington City Council today approved the preferred Mass Rapid Transport option for the Let’s Get Wellington Moving (LGWM) programme, the same option endorsed by Government last week. The preferred option, known as option 1, introduces Mass Rapid Transit to the South Coast and continuous bus priority to the East, and focuses on a new Mt Victoria tunnel with dedicated provision for public transport, walking and cycling, as well as upgrades at the Basin Reserve to improve flows and physically separate movements and extend the Arras tunnel. As a package this option moves the most people possible from the southern and eastern suburbs, supports the most housing and urban development of all the options, and makes city streets better for everyone.

Greater Wellington calls for community views on public transport fares
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- Public consultation on the Future Fares Review is open and Greater Wellington wants the community’s views on changes to our region’s public transport fares. Greater Wellington’s Transport Committee Chair Roger Blakeley says, “one of our strategic priorities outlined in the Regional Public Transport Plan 2021 is to increase mode shift. The new fare types and potential zoning changes have real potential to encourage people out of their cars and onto public transport.”

Budget absence of new trains surprises and disappoints regional councils
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- The Budget’s failure to contribute funding for a fleet of hybrid electric trains in the lower North Island has surprised and disappointed Greater Wellington and Horizons regional councils. The trains, which are battery powered on non-electric track, were proposed by the councils in a business case paid for by Waka Kotahi. Greater Wellington chair Daran Ponter and Horizons chair Rachel Keedwell said the government’s decision was, “Like the lights being turned off”. "It’s especially disappointing for commuters and surprising for our councils. But we’re not giving up,” Cr Ponter said. “When enacted, our business case will significantly reduce transport emissions while providing for population growth and the replacement of aged rolling stock.” Supported by Manawatū-Whanganui’s seven mayors, as well as the eight mayors of the Wellington region, the business case recommends a $762 million dollar investment in a fleet of 22 four-car, tri-mode trains, and associated infrastructure.
