24-Hour Liquor Ban for Wellington City
- Texture
- Wellington City will be under a 24-hour liquor ban as of the 31st of July. Wellington City Council voted on an amendment to the Liquor Control bylaw, which is currently effective from 5pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday until 8am the following morning. That ban is situated upon the central city, Oriental Bay and Mt Victoria Lookout. When the amendment comes into effect, Aro Valley and Central park will be added to those liquor no-go zones.

- Last Saturday we faced Kapiti United, and found that the 1 hour trip away had been reduced to a trip to Whitby as Kapiti Council had closed all their grounds. Despite both teams essentially having an away game, we knew from our last encounter with them that it would be a hard fought game played for the full 90 minutes.

2008 SW 12 & Under Club League ends in nail biter
- Swimming Wellington
- The 2008 SW 12 & under Club League finished with the closest contest on record with three teams separated by just 4 points when the league concluded at Cannons Creek last night. The Mana Black team prevailed with 558.5 points, just 1.5 points ahead of second placed Tawa, with Raumati 2.5 points further back in third.

- The round-the-stopbanks races enjoyed conditions far better than forecast. Peter Stevens won the 1921 Ballantyne Memorial Cup after a delayed start (distracted by encouraging his daughter Julieta in the J-team race). Jeff Galt and Natham Bramley were second the third under handicap. Belinda Buck is the holder of the women's Shirley Barton Trophy for 2008, with Karen Jenkinson and returnee Barbara Tucker the runners-up.

A brand new noodle

- Like ships passing in the night, my sister Lulu returned from London in 1993 just as I was departing on my own pilgrimage to the Old Country. Amongst a raft of useful advice, she insisted I eat at Wagamama - a stylish Japanese noodle shop in Covent Garden. And so I did. And having left Wellingtown just as laksa was making a break for it out of pokey Asian diners, I was wowed by Wagamama's sleek lines, its slick efficiency, and its mammoth bowls of clean, steaming noodles - at only a few bob a pop. It shone like a beacon out of the greasy sea of affordable London eateries. Now here we are with our own brand new Wagamama.

- Details of the Become a Radio Ham classes are now published. The classes are scheduled to run for 8 weeks on a Wednesday evening, 6:30-9:00 at Onlsow College in Johnsonville. The first series start on 30th July, and the summer series 22nd October. Costs are now confirmed at $55 per student, payable to the College. See the page callsigns and training for details.

Ten Mad Minutes and the Slapperz go Down
- Karori Slapperz AFC
- An injury-plagued Slapperz journeyed to Petone Memorial 4 to take on the Armani's. With Steve-O and Barts on the sideline nursing aches and pains, we were all hoping for an injury free match. No luck there, I'm afraid, with Gazz limping off after just 1 minute with a nasty looking recurrence of his injury. Fortunately, Striker Barts gallantly came to the rescue and played the remaining 89 minutes up front.

New developments re: the Cobham Park Indoor Courts
- St Mary's Old Girls Netball Club (SMOG)
- Netball Wellington have advised that although everything was moving ahead towards the resource consent process for the development of the new indoor courts at Cobham Park, this is now being reviewed as part of the Council’s Annual Plan process. Andy Foster from the council has questioned the need for 12 courts. He is pushing to revisit the ’sites analysis’ with the idea of 8 courts at the Port (if the land can be obtained) and possibly covering some courts at Hataitai (amongst other possibilities).

knitted hot-dogs and bunny quilts

- Even though this winter hasn't been as harsh as Wellington winters of past, keeping warm still should be a number one priority. Sometimes, this means forgoing cocktails for tim-tams and movies under a soft, comforting quilted blanket (maybe with bunnies on it?), but if you are anything like me usually you can't keep still and are not very good at just relaxing- unless it's a terrible hangover. That's why I'm thinking of taking up knitting so movies, blankets and indulgent biscuits are a little justified. Maybe knitting and its sweet purity will even stop my drinking, either way today I found a new store that may inspire this possible new pastime of mine.
