It will be a great way to celebrating the 2023/2024 season and everything it gave us. This celebration is for both juniors, seniors and everyone who helps support then - we hope to see as many of you there as possible . There are more details are at the end of the newsletter to go on the Calendar. History of Maranui SLSC The Maranui Surf Life Saving Club, founded in 1911 as a breakaway from the Lyall Bay Surf and Lifesaving Club, boasts a distinctive Modernist building with a rich history. The name Maranui was chosen by the founding members as it described their beach - it translates as ‘long sands’ in Te Reo. Despite facing challenges such as an attempted amalgamation and the appropriation of its clubhouse during World War II, the club has thrived and contributed significantly to the community's safety and well-being. Following a fire in 2009, public support for the building's reconstruction highlighted its importance. The addition of a café to the clubhouse has enhanced its community appeal and revitalized the beachfront. Today, Maranui stands as both a historic landmark and a vibrant hub, embodying the enduring spirit of surf lifesaving and community engagement. Here is a link for more information: https://www.maranui.co.nz/history Courage Under Pressure: A Lifeguard's Heroic Response At Maranui we offer a Rookie Lifeguard Programme which has been designed to help junior members prepare to be a surf lifeguard. The Rookie Lifeguard Programme aims to promote "practical lifeguarding" to the younger members and develop strong ties between senior and junior members as a result of involvement. The value of this programme was highlighted recently in a remarkable display of courage and quick thinking, when one of our young Rookies, Rosie recently found herself facing a medical situation. When Rosie came out onto the street in Kilbirnie, she saw a fellow schoolmate experiencing a seizure, alone and unaided. Without hesitation, she sprang into action, drawing upon her training to assess the situation and help the young girl. She was able to put into practice the First Aid knowledge she had been learning at her Rookie programme. Employing the DRS ABC protocol, she thought quickly to improvise with track pants to cushion her head and maintain an open airway post-seizure. She kept calm and remembered her training, getting assistance from passers-by's, delegating tasks, and alerting emergency services. She remained with her schoolmate, offering support until the girl's mother—a doctor—arrived to take her home. This story of bravery and compassion highlights the value of lifeguard training and the confidence it gives to our young people to be an active part of helping the community. The character and dedication fostered by SLNZ lifeguard programme is unique and in celebrating Rosie’s heroism, we are reminded of the collective strength and spirit of Maranui’ s lifeguards. SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Capital Coast IRB Champs - Waitangi Day 2024 Impressive outcomes were secured, including a 1st and 3rd place in the U19 men's category. Everyone had a fantastic day, despite the blustery conditions that challenged our esteemed spectators. It was really delightful to observe two life members present on the beach as well. Junior Capital Coast 2 & WH3 Wellington weather has continued to throw challenges at us but as always our youngsters have adapted. Cap Coast Champs was held over two weekends, one before and one after Oceans. Cap Coast champs was a success overall and our team came away second to Titahi Bay. This was something to be very proud of. As the season comes to a close and we reflect on what we have achieved this summer, the future is exciting. As we pack away the boards and beanies the planning for next year starts. We wish you all a happy winter doing more fun sports while remembering the memories from your summer at Maranui. Every season we need more coaches, more officials, new energy around the board table or even just an email with something you'd like to see happen or something you'd like to be a part of. Keep an eye out for Pool Champs information, our winter season fun in the pool and also pre-season paddle. If your child has really enjoyed Sunday Surf this year and wants to do more and is U10-U14 (with 200m badge) then consider joining us more often next season and jump in on the Tuesday/Thursday sessions. Have a great off season & we will see you (and any friends you want to bring along) next year. Information Session for juniors moving in to Lifeguard Sport Every year Head Coach Rhys Speirs runs an information/presentation session for juniors moving up to lifeguarding for the coming season. It seems early but the idea is to give newbies an understanding of what's involved, pathways available, how things work and what people can expect and maybe plan for. A good way to make informed decisions. You may be "on the fence" about next year and/or just enjoying your down time at the moment but it would be great if athletes/"lifeguards to be", and parents come along, listen and ask heaps of questions. It is a great opportunity to know what's on offer and how it could benefit you. Details below: Date: Sunday 7th April Time: 3:30pm Duration: Approx 45mins Venue: Maranui Surf Lifesaving Club, Lyall Bay Wellington Oceans' 24. We are so proud of our Juniors, We want to congratulate and celebrate the First times, Best times, and Last times, and bid farewell to the u14's as they finish up their Junior SLS Sport journey. Thank you to our hosts @mountlifeguards, the officials, our helpful parents, managers, coordinators organisers and coaches. It takes a village, so I'm glad we have one. Pool Rescue Information Session Pool Rescue is a fun and engaging way to stay connected to lifesaving over Winter. Maranui has a strong successful history with Pool Rescue events. The last two years has been about rebuilding the fun after Covid so now this year Head Coach Rhys Speirs has a strong desire to get Maranui back to the National stage An information session is planned for Sunday May 19th at 3:30pm at Maranui SLSC. Come along and see what it's all about and where we are heading. Fun fun fun! Maranui is a club that is kept alive and driven forward by volunteers giving their time to help the club succeed. One goal for next year is to spread the load and be purposeful about getting more people involved in helping to keep the club to moving forward. There are lots of jobs that need some dedicated love from September to March – some are small, some are very small and some are a bit more involved. None of them really require any specialist skills that can’t be easily picked up as you go or taught by someone handing over the baton. All of them though will benefit from having someone with a different way of thinking, approach things with a new set of eye’s. We need people to help with Gear maintenance and repairs, accommodation, First Aid supplies, even the IRB motors could do with some love. It might even be an idea to have a BBQ Officer, a Spade captain or a Boat Shed Controller - the list goes on . We can pretty much guarantee there will be some little thing to suit everyone who has a bit of time they can put into supporting the Club. So give it some thought and if you would like to get some more insight or are ready to put your hand up please speak to any of our directors (see contact list at end of newsletters) or contact Sue Tuia for a korero - chair@maranui.co.nz Job Vacancy – Building Manager Now the season is over most of you will have realised that running Maranui takes a significant amount of time, and a lot of people. The roles are many and varied and some do not require any surf lifesaving skills. This job is one. Maranui requires someone to take responsibility for its clubhouse. This person will be tasked with ensuring the building is in good repair, both inside and out, ensuring it is fit for purpose and preserved for the future. It’s an important role that will suit anyone who understand home ownership. The incumbent will not need to be a tradie as all work required can, and currently is, carried out by contractors. If you would like to join the team that governs the Club, then this is a great position as it is not too challenging but very rewarding. To ensure a seamless handover, mentoring will be available for as long as necessary. Please make contact with Francie Russell, Director of Business – business@maranui.co.nz – or phone 0274 503443. Maranui End of Season Celebration & Prize Giving 2024 Date: Sunday 5th May Time: 3.00pm - 5.00pm Venue: TBC This is held annually to celebrate the seasons achievements and recognise our club members. It’s a full Maranui Celebration overing lifeguarding, junior surf, senior sports, instructors, coaches and service to Maranui SLSC. The bar will be open, there will be soft drinks and party food and it would be great to see a big Maranui turn out so we can make some real noise!! • MARANUI SLSC FEBRUARY 2024 NEWSLETTER Our Purpose is to: Grow people to their potential by providing an inclusive and supportive environment where people enjoy what they do, put in maximum effort through a surf environment that is constantly changing and challenging. New Maranui SLSC Chair – Sue Tuia We are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to Sue Tuia, the new Chair of Maranui SLSC. Sue, a proud mother to Bella and John, brings a wealth of experience and dedication to her role, having been actively involved in surf lifesaving since 1976. Her commitment to the values and mission of Maranui is evident through her membership, which dates back to 2007. With a deep-rooted passion for surf lifesaving and a longstanding connection to our club, Sue's leadership is sure to enhance the spirit and success of Maranui SLSC. We look forward to the positive impact she will undoubtedly bring to our community. BIG SLSNZ News “It was a tremendous honour and truly humbling to be elected President by surf lifesaving clubs at Surf Life Saving New Zealand Annual General Meeting in September. Maranui SLSC has a proud history of members being elected and appointed to volunteer leadership positions at a national level. The last Maranui clubbie to be elected SLSNZ President was Murray Haxton in 2002. Murray was a great mentor to me over many years and was well respected by clubbies around New Zealand. One of the surf lifesaving memories that I will always value is working with Murray when he was President, and I was Chairman of Surf Life Saving New Zealand between 2002 and 2004. Murray epitomised the Maranui spirit and his legacy lives on through Murray Haxton Cup. There is a citation about Murray in the clubhouse lounge between the two windows looking out to sea and I would urge you to take a look next time you are at the club” - Jim Warwick Jim is showcased in a safety video produced by SLSNZ. You can find the video by following this link: SLSNZ Safety Video SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Centrals proved to be a tremendous success for both juniors and seniors. What unfolded was a heartening display of older siblings guiding and supporting the younger ones, while the younger siblings reciprocated by assisting their older counterparts. Our exceptional parents took on the roles of officials, a contribution we need more of to ensure the seamless functioning of the sport. The pride swelled within us as our juniors secured medals across both water and land events. The success of the junior camp for our development team can be attributed to the invaluable lifeguard support we received. A special thank you goes out to Bella Tuia, Holly Reynolds, and Joe Barry (fresh from CRCs & Senior Camp!) who went above and beyond to ensure our young athletes could learn, develop skills, and navigate challenging surf conditions. The Papamoa carnival provided great enjoyment, albeit with an adjusted programme due to significant swells. Despite the conditions, the kids had a fantastic time, surprising many teams with medals in various races. It was particularly gratifying to witness our U10 participants, Mille & Alex, seamlessly joining composite teams and clinching a few medals of their own. Riversdale proved to be an epic experience with massive waves, according to the resilient yet small team that participated. A huge shout-out and gratitude to Kate & Ben Gleisner for effectively managing the team, as well as to all the parents whose efforts made this event possible. WEDNESDAY NIGHT IS CLUB NIGHT 5.30PM We extend a warm welcome to both our valued members and their families to join us for an evening steeped in camaraderie, food (BYO) and games. • Reminder: Maranui SLSC Extraordinary Meeting Our Purpose is to: Grow people to their potential by providing an INCLUSIVE and SUPPORTIVE environment where people ENJOY what they do, put in maximum EFFORT through a surf environment that is constantly changing and CHALLENGING. MARANUI SLSC EXTRAORDINARY MEETING The Maranui Management Board has recognised the need to quickly expand its capability by expanding its ranks to reflect the diversity of the club, and to fill a variety of roles that enable the club to grow and be successful for the next 100 years. Part of this expansion includes reopening the election for a new Chairperson. I have been reflecting on the current personnel structure of the board, and whilst I am honoured to have been elected as Chair, I do not believe it is healthy for the club or myself to hold multiple roles on the Board. I firmly believe the role of the Chair should be independent of other management and governance roles and as such am stepping down as Chairperson while maintaining my position as Director of Sport. In order to bring new people into the Board and find a new chair we will be holding an Extraordinary Members meeting for all members to attend, listen to our challenges, put their hand up for a role and vote. An expression of interest (EoI) for the role of Chairperson is being sought. Candidates are expected to reflect the Maranui values of Respect, Fun, Tradition, Transparency, Collaboration and Community. Please register your EoI by clicking the link <RSVP> Diversity of people and ideas with good discussion and informed decisions will be key to our club's success. Please join us on: · Date: Thursday the 9th of November · Time:7:30pm · Location: Maranui Club rooms Have your say and start a new journey to be better. We are in this together and stronger together. Kind regards Melanie Murray on behalf of Rhys Speirs (Chair) Thank you to our MAJOR SUPPORTERS for your continued support! Copyright © 2023 Maranui SLSC, All rights reserved. Recently I was elected as Chair of the Maranui Management Board. A bit of my history. I love the ocean. I have been a patrolling guard and Patrol Captain for Maranui for well over 10 years and Head Coach of Senior sport for over 10 years and a life member of Maranui. My service in lifesaving started way back in 1988 with Mount Maunganui Lifesaving Service where I gained my lifeguard award. I am an open door so please feel free to come up and chat with me, good, bad or just small talk. My first task of action for the new Management Board was for each of us to introduce ourselves to the greater Maranui whanau. Please read on and find out who we are and what our role is. I am looking forward to the upcoming 2023/24 season. See you on the beach. Rhys Maranui SLSC Chair chair@maranui.co.nz I have been re-elected as Director of Business. My role is ‘off water’ and primarily to do with the business and financial business of Maranui. I am a Life Member and my involvement with Maranui started when my family arrived in Wellington in 1987. I am always available to discuss anything to do with the Club as my goal is to ensure members get a good deal and enjoy being part of the Maranui whanau. Frances Director of Business business@maranui.co.nz I am a mum to 3 boys and stepmom to 2 boys. I have been part of Maranui for 9 years and love the skills, life lessons and friendships the club and the sport have given me and my family. My role is to ensure we deliver a fun experience for our youngest athletes developing their skills year on year to grow them into great lifeguards at 14 years old. Working in sport I see the need for balance, enjoyment, competition that is fair and building success that is athlete centric. To do this, building strong foundations is essential. My aim is to work with our volunteer coaches and parents to ensure our tamariki have 100% fun, 100% time while growing their skills and water safety. 2023 will see us growing our programme and seeking more volunteer support to grow our athletes. Lucy Director of Junior Surf Development juniordevelopment@maranui.co.nz I have a passion for water safety and education. I have always loved the water in all its forms and after university I joined a USA Masters swim squad, which brought me to lifeguarding and being a swim instructor. That is how I met my NZ Surf Lifesaving husband and together we had Surf Lifesaving & Competitive swimming children. Maranui SLSC is our 2nd club, we joined them in 2009 after moving up to Wellington and haven't looked back since. Carrie Director of Lifesaving lifeguard@maranui.co.nz Hey, I am Georgia and Co-lifesaving Director! I have been a lifeguard at Maranui since I was fourteen and a patrol captain for the past four years. I am passionate about being a lifeguard as I enjoy educating people on water safety and keeping people safe while they play in the ocean. I know we haven’t celebrated our tamariki as often as we should in this newsletter, but hopefully our social media content has shown how we love seeing what they and the parents achieve. Jump on Facebook www.facebook.com or instgram www.instagram.com/maranuislsc/. As I look back over this season I feel proud of every child that pulls on togs or wetsuit and hits the water at Sunday sessions, Carnivals & Mid week development sessions. I thank our amazing coaches for the effort and care they give to developing these amazing kids. We did not cancel a Sunday session, ran for 3 extra weeks into March and ran the Inaugural Boat ramp to beach swim. This year had 18 athletes regularly taking part in mid week development & 16 of those headed to Oceans - Junior surf nationals and represented Maranui with pride and showed all the values of the Maranui way. We also had a steady 6-10 keen paddlers come on a Thursday to board skills sessions. We want to grow these groups and grow more lifeguards as well as athletes who continue through to lifeguard sports. We can not achieve what we achieve without unwavering support from our parent group, sign in crew, lifeguards and board members. Thank you to the parents who have become officials this year, managed age groups at carnivals and squeegeed the floor before leaving, it was noticed and appreciated. As we plan for 2023/24 we are always looking for more officials, coaches, helpers …If your not sure what you can do give me a call/text/email. If you have any thoughts on what we can do to support more kids getting involved again reach out. Sunday 7th May is our end of season celebration. We celebrate the success of our tamariki, excellence in our senior lifeguard sport athletes, achievements of lifeguards in service and our amazing volunteers. Please do join us, its also an opportunity to meet some of those people you don’t see often or haven’t met but do heaps for our Nippers.  Lucy Barry Director Junior Surf Sport lucyjanebarry@gmail.com   <!-- --> Maranui SLSC Lifeguard Sport athletes (Seniors) Back Row L-R: Joshua Bethell, Bruno Joli, Kano Hill, Joseph Barry, Max Reynolds, Thomas Warburton + Coach Rhys Speirs. MARANUI REPRESENTS AT TSB NATIONALS 2023 IN NEW BRIGHTON  Big, challenging, scary and exciting are all words that Maranui's lifeguard sport team would use to describe the surf conditions at TSB Nationals. Maranui has been going through a rebuilding phase of it's senior team with only 2 current athletes having experienced Nationals previously thanks to Covid. The club has some exciting talent that showed their potential and that they are heading in the right direction. Athletes made a number of finals across the age groups. Whilst only one Podium was achieved the young team showed they are on the cusp of producing podium finishes, by recording 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, 7ths and top 15's in highly competitive races and challenging conditions. Ski events were incredibly hard in 3 metre surf and gnarly sandbars. It was incredibly satisfying to see our U19 women's ski relay team of Holly Reynolds, Ruby Douglas and Ella Strang rewarded with a bronze. Coach Rhys is looking forward to continuing the work and fun, seeing what can be achieved in 2023/24 as the team matures and the mahi starts. Rhys Speirs Director of Sport / Head Coach Maranui SLSC <!-- --> U11-U14 Athletes, Supporters and Coaches JUNIOR SURF What a break our juniors have had, Wellington brought some great beach days…. 13th of January saw a team of 12 U11-U14 athletes compete at the Central Regional Junior Champs (CRJC), Fitzroy, New Plymouth. Our young participants showed the Maranui values coming away with several medals and putting the club 7th overall in our region. Well done everyone. Last week we had our annual trip to Papamoa with the development team and tamariki planning to attend Oceans. What an amazing week. Training with local clubs Papamoa & Mount Maunganui helps the development of skills in conditions we can’t provide in Wellington. The coaches were super proud of the effort, resilience and confidence our team showed, even when a large fishy predator turned up. For all our U10s we have next years camp booked for 18-22nd January 2024 for anyone who wants to enjoy more time in the surf developing skills. Catch any of the development coaching team to discuss this programme if you are interested. A small team represented us at Riversdale carnival and I want to send a massive thanks to the parents who stepped up to make it happen for the kids. Although Mother Nature, more specifically water quality have set new challenges our coaches, kids and parents have all adapted well to sessions. A few people have asked about our sessions when water quality is deemed unsafe to swim. For those at Sundays session I explained we will run sessions when Land, Air, Water, Aotearoa (LAWA) deem the water quality unsuitable for swimming with a modified programme that mitigated risk and reduces our participants time in the water at a depth where they are at risk of ingesting water. If on days where water quality is poor you as a parent don’t feel comfortable with you child in the water feel free to miss those sessions. We want the kids & parents  to have fun & feel safe. Our sport relies on volunteers and at the moment we are in a transitional phase and find our selves in a position where we need more coaches and officials. If you are keen to get involved please do catch me for a chat. Is coaching for you? Are you enthusiastic, fun and like helping our youngsters grow in sport? Are you keen to get out learn some new skills and share these all the while having fun on the beach and working with a dedicated group of coaches who want to help our kids grow in the sport? If you answer yes then coaching is for you!!  What next? Let me or Rhys know, arrive at the next Sunday session in a wetsuit and shadow one of the coaches. Jump on the next coaching course (date TBC) Is Officiating for you? Do you enjoy helping our athletes learn how to enjoy competitions in a fun and nurturing environment. Are you organised & willing to work with technology in an ever changing environment? Do you enjoy endless yummy food while watching our athletes give 100%. If you answered yes then Officiating is for you!! What next? Sign up to Surf Life Saving NZ https://webportal.surflifesaving.org.nz/new-membership/. From here you can access the members portal and do the on line learning. Once you have completed that let me know and at the next carnival we can arrange for you to jump in and shadow one of our amazing officials. From Thursday 1st December I will be running board skill upskill sessions (advertised initially as Wednesday but circumstances changed). This is open to all U9-U14 who just want more time on the boards, learning the more technical parts of paddling. Pre-requisite is having the 200m badge. Please register interest at - https://forms.gle/UU43nrCsnptBmRSe8 Sunday 27th November there was the Worser Bay Carnival. Unfortunately the Carnival was cancelled due to water quality issues.  We will be back on Sunday 4th December for more surf fun! KIA ORA Sun, sand, surf, the season is almost upon us. A very warm welcome to all our Maranui families for the 2022-23 season! Being part of Maranui is a great opportunity for parents to get involved in a number of ways in and out of the water. Whether it’s helping coaches gather equipment, helps kids handle and tidy away gear, sweep & mop changing rooms at the end of the session and many other little tasks that keep our club working, don’t be afraid to jump in or ask what needs doing. Be part of the Maranui way. There will be an induction to the Junior Surf season in the lounge on Sunday 6th November once children are warming up, please make sure one parent/caregiver attends. We had a fantastic turn out for both Working Bee's. Enormous thanks to all our clubbies who gave up a couple of hours to help give the club some TLC. A massive Ka Pai! Please ensure your U10s - U14s athlete(s) have registered to attend the 200m badge swim assessment this Sunday 30 October. We need your registration to ensure all U10s-U14s are attending. Otherwise any athlete who has not refreshed or gained their 200m badge will be unable to use a board and do the swim. Please see registraion and more info below. Please note the time change for the Sunday Junior Surf session this season for the U11 - U14 age group is now at 10am - 11.30pm (signed in by 9.45am). We can't wait to see all our Junior Surf athletes on Sunday 6 November for another fabulous season. Hopefully accompanied by sunshine and some surf!  An email about the upcoming season will be sent by next week to all registered clubbies. Maranui Oceans'23 have a Quiz Night Fundraiser at the Parrot Dog on Tuesday 1 November, 7pm. A FUN evening not to be missed. See details below. Please ensure you have paid your subs for the season by Monday 31 October. Any queries please email Patricia Kelly (Maranui Finance Manager) - accounts@maranui.co.nz Have a lovely weekend. VISION: One of New Zealand's premier surf lifesaving clubs providing world class surf lifesaving services and developing leaders and champions. PURPOSE: Provide our community a safe surf and beach environment. OUR CORE VALUES: Community, Excellence, Fun, Respect, and Tradition. <!-- --> HAERE MAI, WELCOME I am excited to welcome all our new families to Maranui as well as our returning cubbies. As we prepare for this year summer of surf fun I have taken a moment to reflect on the challenges we have faced over the last couple of seasons with COVID19. The impacts on community junior sport is being felt with participation across all sports nationally down I am excited to see our membership holding tight. This is don to the amazing work of our Board, volunteers and families. Junior surf has one main purpose and that is to grow our lifeguards of the future. All the fun we have week in week out, the carnivals and the xtra development sessions are all designed to be fun, engaging and grow our children who participate whatever age & stage they are. We as a club can not do that with out family support and volunteers. Thank you for joining us on this fun journey. Our first session is Sunday 6th November. Once all our cubbies are signed in and away with our coaches for a warm up I invite all parents to join us in the club lounge for a welcome to the club catch up. This is for all parents new & returning. Our development sessions for our U11-U14 cubbies are now underway, these are open to any athlete keen for more time in the water to grow their skills and anyone keen to head to Oceans in 2023. Please drop me an email if you are interested. More development opportunities for kids and parents will pop up over the season so keep you eyes peeled. As for any community sports club we are always looking for new & enthusiastic parents to join us coaching, officiating, co-ordinating age groups at carnivals or just to do some of those ongoing tasks through the sessions and on a weekly basis…. Cleaning the club at the end of sessions, hosing equipment at the end sessions, helping coaches with equipment, clearing sand out of the boasted…. The tasks are endless, jump in, help out and if in doubt ask one of us for a pointer.  See you all on the 6th November…. All clubbies should be swimming - we don't teach athletes to swim. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. Children who do not successfully meet the swim requirements will be unable to use the paddle boards and compete in the water events at junior surf sessions and carnivals until they obtain their current 200m badge.  Junior Surf athletes will need to swim 200m confidently (25m lane), followed by a 1 minute tread water, within the SLSNZ allotted time depending on their age.  U10/U11/U12 is swim 200m in 7 mins, tread water 1 minute U13 swim in under 5.5 mins, tread water 1 minute U14 swim in under 4.5mins, tread water 1 minute 200m BADGES Badges are to be sewn (carefully) onto your competition cap. If your child(ren) has completed the 200m swim a badge can be collected at sign-in at junior surf sessions on Sunday mornings. <!-- --> JUNIOR SURF (NIPPERS) Junior Surf starts on Sunday 6 November. All U10 - U14 athletes must attend. The 200m safety award must be refreshed each year. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THE 200M BADGE ASSESSMENT -  https://forms.gle/LxkW7ttBns2yrvnx6  All clubbies should be swimming - we don't teach athletes to swim. <!-- --> PARENTS / CAREGIVERS IN THE WATER U7 AGE GROUP is an age which, at Lyall Bay with its variable wave height and harsh conditions, is unable to be left to just the coaches and lifeguards. U7 athletes require a parent/caregiver to be in the water with them at all times. U8 - U9 AGE GROUP we ideally would like a parent/caregiver in the water or water edge ready to enter if required,  If your child requires extra assistance in the water, please enter the water with them, rather than assuming our volunteers will be able to look after them. Please note:  Our club relies heavily on the active involvement of parents, the club cannot function without people volunteering. Kids love to see their parents/caregivers interacting at the club. Parent/Caregivers participation is encouraged in the water at all ages. This is a great way for parents to be actively involved, it’s a great way to increase your own water confidence and have FUN. The more adults we have in the water the better.  If you are not a competent swimmer, there is always a need for people to remain in the shallows to help retrieve boards and ensure children exit safely, providing close and constant supervision of our young athletes in the water. <!-- --> Wellington Surf Lessons Lyall Bay Big Shout out to Wellington Surf Lessons Lyall Bay for supporting Maranui SLSC with our quiz events by donating a voucher. Dates for refreshing the 200m badge this season, TBC.   <!-- --> RACHAEL BURKE - PEER SUPPORT Rachael Burke has recently undertaken training through SLSNZ to take on the role of Peer Supporter within Maranui Surf Life Saving Club.
