Review: Kick Up a FUS
- Salient
- In January 2023, the abrupt firing of 19 dancers at Calendar Girls Wellington made headlines. 35 of the dancers who worked there, wrote and signed a letter expressing their concerns over the venue's plans to take 50% of their earnings instead of the previous 40%. This incident sparked a larger movement among the fired dancers, leading them to form FUS - a grassroots organisation that fights against exploitative practices in the adult entertainment industry. The venue itself Valhalla was a surprisingly good pick for the event. As Stephen, who came with us says:

Have your artwork in lights
- Porirua City Council
- Local artists have the opportunity to see their work on display in public and up in lights. Porirua City Council is seeking artists to feature over winter 2024 and summer 2024/2025 in the city’s lightboxes. Each lightbox exhibition will run for about five months, with six works by a single artist or collective on display during each exhibition. The lightboxes were installed in Porirua city centre in mid-2022 to showcase local artists and their work, says Pātaka Art + Museum Director, Ana Sciascia. “They provide an opportunity for curators and artists to exhibit work in a dynamically urban, high-profile environment.”

Return of standard Metlink fares for under 25s
- Metlink
- Fare changes are coming soon for passengers aged 24 and under, following the government’s decision to withdraw funding for age-based concessions. From 1 May 2024, following the rollback of the former government’s age-based concessions on Metlink services: children aged 5 to 16, or older if still at secondary school, will pay half the adult fare, fares for people aged 17 to 24 will return to full price, unless they qualify for an alternative tertiary or Community Connect concession, under 5s will continue to travel for free on all services. Greater Wellington Transport committee chair Thomas Nash says the change will be felt by young people and whānau across the region, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. “I don’t want to end these concessions – we know they have made a big difference to people,” Cr Nash says.

Gordon Wilson is Dead, Long Live Affordable Housing
- Salient
- Last Thursday, Wellington City Council passed what Councillor Nīkau Wi Neera described as “the most pro-housing, ambitious set of amendments that we could”, as the council voted on changes to the District Plan. The meeting saw the council’s biggest break from the NIMBY-ism which has defined housing policy in the city for decades. W after W for affordable housing flashed onto the council’s voting screens. So overwhelming were the wins for affordable housing that Councillor Nicola Young may have been left with a mild case of amnesia, saying “I’m so numb about the district plan I can barely remember what [the amendments] are.”

Getting rid of character
- Wellington Scoop
- Most Wellington campaigners in recent decades have fought to save the city’s unique character. So it was unusual to have a group saying it was delighted and stoked by the city council decision to reduce the city’s character areas. If the plan gets ministerial approval next month, it will however not be the first time that the council has presided over the destruction of character areas and streetscapes. Think of the regime of mayor Michael Fowler. An architect, he presided over the demolition of much of Lambton Quay’s heritage buildings.

Review: Call The Plumber Tour—Frank on Tap and Wet Denim
- Salient
- Frank on Tap and Wet Denim concluded their “Call The Plumber” tour in Wellington at San Fran this past Saturday. Co-headlining the tour, the show was nothing if not a striking finale. With supporting artists, First Reserve, Messie, and Swimcap, the venue was packed and brimming with excitement—there wasn’t a single bad spot to watch the show from. Taking the stage as the first headliner, Frank on Tap delivered a vibrant pop-rock performance that raised the energy of the whole room. There wasn’t a single person either fully immersed and dancing or at least nodding their head along to the beat. From captivating vocals to energising drum beats, there wasn’t an uninteresting second of their set.

Metlink’s Airport Express set to break 2023 patronage record
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- Eight months since Metlink’s Airport Express exceeded forecast demand, latest patronage figures indicate a new record is poised to be set. 364,191 trips were recorded on the fully electric buses’ first year of operation to 20 July 2023 – 128% of the number expected. With over 320,000 trips already taken in the service’s second year of operation and figures for April and May forecast to be around 36,000 in each month, patronage is set to surpass the 2023 total in just ten months. Greater Wellington chair Daran Ponter say he’s delighted by the patronage growth which underscores Metlink’s commitment to providing efficient and reliable transport options for our residents and visitors alike.

An 80s vibe, but not in a good way
- Wellington Scoop
- It may not be dressed in fluoro lycra, but sometimes the furore over Wellington’s District Plan feels like the 80s all over again. Those who lived through those tumultuous times may see the similarities. In the 1980s, the Muldoon government’s efforts to control the economy were becoming increasingly futile – and on to the stage stepped a new class of bright young things pushing for radical change.

One, Two, Buckle Your Shoes—Getting Around Gets Tougher
- Salient
- The Government released its draft policy statement on transport last week and the news is bleak for anyone who wants to go anywhere other than their flat and the dairy down the road. Funding for public transport, walking, and cycling has been significantly slashed by the latest policy, down $1 billion from the initial allocation set by the prior Labour government. In addition, while money has been allocated for some roading projects, the draft policy statement has said that none of the funding for local roads is to be used on “multi-modal improvements” like bus or cycle lanes, and that “there will be reduced funding for traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps.”

Killed by a Tram
- Friends of Karori Cemetery
- On the evening of 28th May 1917, a tramcar motorman was driving his tram towards Lambton Station when a man stepped off the footpath in front of him. He sounded the gong and the man seemed to stop and stagger. He then applied the emergency brake but the man was struck by the advertisement side of the car and knocked down. The injured man was carried to the Central Hotel with the assistance of a solider. He never regained consciousness on being admitted to hospital and died at 8am the following morning.

Review: Sandwich Artist
- Salient
- Maybe I’m being subjective here, but a show playing “Man or Muppet” as house music is bound to be good fun. And Sandwich Artist was! A heartwarming and silly musical, that poked fun at the genre conventions while being a genuinely well-put together show, with a lot of love and just a bit more to it than only sliced bread. The story follows Sammy Rye (Phoebe Caldeiro), an unrecognised sandwich genius working for an unnamed sandwich chain, who’s unorthodox, off-menu sandwiches get her fired, despite how good they are. She gambles it all on a bus ride to Wellington, where a fellowship is formed with a despondent carrot farmer (Catherine Gavigan-Binnie), a butcher with attachment issues (Anna Barker), and a strangely shifty baker (Dylan Hutton). Phoebe and Jack McGee worked together on a story that does a lot with very little: only 6 major speaking roles and minimal props or set.

Is a Prime Minster Entitled to a Nice House?
- Eye of the Fish
- There’s been a lot about this house in the news recently – both the paper kind of news, and the TV kind of news. May as well get my news from proper news sources while they exist, seeing as it sounds like soon nothing is going to exist in the news world. What will we do when 3News and OneNews are ditched, and Stuff has gone bust again? Its hard enough to even buy a paper these days, as increasingly nowhere sells them. What do we do in the future – just make up our own news as we go? Seems to be working fine for some people! Anyway, THIS is the house in question:

Review: The New Blue—A Portrait of Pixie Williams

Review: blackpill
- Salient
- Content Warning: Misogyny, sexual content Before I watched this show I was warned it would ‘challenge me.' Naturally, a show about incel culture should not be easy to digest. However, as the show unfolded, I found myself facing a different kind of challenge than I had expected—one that tested my empathy and ability to connect with others. As expected from the topic, the show's title, blackpill, is derived from the incel community, and its definition is essentially what the show presents. In short, the ‘blackpill ideology’ maintains that physical attractiveness is the most important factor in attracting women, and that certain physical and social factors are necessary for success.

Ngahere Working Bees Restoring Te Taiao
- Onslow College
- Onslow students, whanau and teachers tore into weeds to release young forest plants in two recent working bees. The teams did their mahi in the forest restoration area next to the Waipahīhī Stream at Onslow College on the 17th and 25th February. Dozens of young rakau, wharariki flax and tussock were liberated from the smothering effects of invasive weeds. Tūī, riroriro, pīwakawaka and tauhou regularly make use of the regenerating forest, affirming the biodiversity goals of the project. The growing ngahere is also used by students and teachers as part of Onslow’s curriculum across a range of learning areas. Year 9 Science students use the forest while learning to measure and assess ecological communities and in developing their value of kaitiakitanga for te taiao.

Review: An Old-Fashioned Lesbian Love Story
- Salient
- Whisking us back to a world of swing jazz and giggle juice, Bars Behind Bars is an immersive experience. From the moment the audience enters, the actors are scattered about, welcoming us, having secret conversations in the hallway, sending us back in time. The show begins with a fourth-wall-breaking introduction to the characters and their lives at The Cat’s Pajamas, an illicit bar in Manhattan during the prohibition. When the bar’s owner is murdered in the back room, his wife Annie is the primary suspect of the interrogation.

Abrupt Closure of Award Winning Wellington Brothel
- Salient
- A central, appointment based brothel that has been open since 2006 has announced that they will be closing their doors on the 29th February 2024. A statement made by the owner (who is a sex worker), announced the closure to clients with mixed emotions, stating “Although this decision is not made lightly, I believe it is the best way forward for both myself and the business”. There was no reason provided in the initial statement as to why the decision was made - at least not to clients.

Debate Over Housing Intensification ... Intensifies
- Salient
- The debate over the future of Wellington’s housing rages on, as Council continues to grapple with the 220 pages of bullshittery brought to it by the Independent Hearings Panel (IHP) The most recent report brought to council by the IHP contains all of its recommendations for Wellington’s District Plan—the rulebook for urban planning in Te Whanganui-a-Tara—developed via a public consultation process that it has been undergoing since February of last year. However, as pointed out by a number of commentators, many of the recommendations made by the IHP are, frankly, bonkers.

Marsden's New Trailer
- Samuel Marsden Collegiate School
- Thanks to the incredible support of New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) and Marsden Rowing, we're thrilled to unveil Marsden's brand new trailer, made possible through our successful fundraising efforts! This custom-built trailer will play a crucial role in helping us not only move things from A to B but to assist our Marsden Rowing squad. According to the team, “it's a dream to tow compared to our old one as it is much lighter and it has more functional space inside and on top". A BIG thank you to everyone who contributed to our fundraising campaign.
