Killing Kāinga Ora
- Wellington Scoop
- The Luxon-led government continues its attack on anything that the Labour Party ever managed to do, with the release of news about the Kāinga Ora housing projects. Most of them, it seems, have been killed off. “Brakes put on more than 370 Kāinga Ora housing developments nationally”. In Wellington the following projects are stopped: Arlington redevelopment and Evans Bay Parade, with other projects stopped in the Hutt, Naenae, Wainuiomata, and Porirua. The list says “paused.” But I know a dead duck when I see one.

It's working! The new District Plan in action.
- A City for People
- It’s been a month since the Minister for Housing approved Wellington’s trailblazing new District Plan. Thanks to four years of campaigning, and your support, this new Plan has raised building height limits across the city, making it easier to build townhouses and apartments in the places we need them most. It’s early days, but we’re already seeing signs of success. Wellington is finally going to get more homes.

Gordon Wilson is Dead, Long Live Affordable Housing
- Salient
- Last Thursday, Wellington City Council passed what Councillor Nīkau Wi Neera described as “the most pro-housing, ambitious set of amendments that we could”, as the council voted on changes to the District Plan. The meeting saw the council’s biggest break from the NIMBY-ism which has defined housing policy in the city for decades. W after W for affordable housing flashed onto the council’s voting screens. So overwhelming were the wins for affordable housing that Councillor Nicola Young may have been left with a mild case of amnesia, saying “I’m so numb about the district plan I can barely remember what [the amendments] are.”

An 80s vibe, but not in a good way
- Wellington Scoop
- It may not be dressed in fluoro lycra, but sometimes the furore over Wellington’s District Plan feels like the 80s all over again. Those who lived through those tumultuous times may see the similarities. In the 1980s, the Muldoon government’s efforts to control the economy were becoming increasingly futile – and on to the stage stepped a new class of bright young things pushing for radical change.

Debate Over Housing Intensification ... Intensifies
- Salient
- The debate over the future of Wellington’s housing rages on, as Council continues to grapple with the 220 pages of bullshittery brought to it by the Independent Hearings Panel (IHP) The most recent report brought to council by the IHP contains all of its recommendations for Wellington’s District Plan—the rulebook for urban planning in Te Whanganui-a-Tara—developed via a public consultation process that it has been undergoing since February of last year. However, as pointed out by a number of commentators, many of the recommendations made by the IHP are, frankly, bonkers.

A City for People
- Decades of inaction have meant house prices are out of control, while old rental properties rot out from underneath us. A whole generation of people are at risk of being forced out from the central city into new suburbs sprawling north, spending hours every day in traffic jams. We believe the Spatial Plan will allow Wellington to plan for the future so that new generations of Wellingtonians can share the city we love, and have a chance to live in a home that is affordable, accessible, healthy and warm.
