    • Wellington Phoenix Partnership
      • Island Bay United is excited to announce a new partnership with the Wellington Phoenix as they look to grow their Pre-Academy Centre (PAC) programme in Wellington's southern suburbs. In partnering with the Nix, IBU will join a wide network of clubs across the country who have adopted the PAC programme over the past two seasons. The PAC programme is targeted at players in the skill acquisition phase (ages 9-12) and looks to build on their key skills and confidence to take the next step in their football journey. PAC clubs utilise the Phoenix’s pre-academy training programme and development centre - an online platform to support the development of players, coaches and parent coaches. We see this as a fantastic opportunity to strengthen the connection between our community club and the Phoenix. This partnership will provide our talented young players a pathway into the Phoenix youth academies and beyond. IBU Director of Football Stuart Jacobs and Junior Head Coach Leo Villa will continue to lead Island Bay United's Talent Development Programme, Junior Academy, Girls Only and Junior Social Programmes with the PAC overlay for players, coaches and parents to be introduced this term. More information will follow as we implement this. Island Bay United is excited at the possibilities in our new relationship with the Wellington Phoenix and look forward to a long and successful partnership together.

    • Season 2022 Coaching Opportunities
      • First team coach – Men First team coach – Women Reserve team coach – Men TDP coach IBU is looking for at least two energetic coaches for our senior and youth teams! This is a unique opportunity to continue to build and capitalise on recent successes of our senior/youth teams and to also work with our upcoming talent as part of our TDP programme. With the borders opening a little unfortunately we are saying goodbye to a few of our coaches as they take time to head home. The Coach We are seeking experienced and motivated coaches to bring the best out of our players. You will need a mix of technical and motivational skills - we want people who can bring out the best in our players both on the ball and mentally. Ideally you will have a minimum C licence or above. We are open to having a discussion on qualifications. We are flexible on how we allocate teams and pay based on coaching hours delivered. We work with our coaches to set the training program for players both in and out of season. We run pre-season training and an all-year round TDP programme so there is opportunity for coaching hours outside of the season. You will be expected to work as part of a wider coaching team across the club. Development opportunities also exist as we believe in developing our coaches as much as our players - we are currently working on what our coach development program looks like for the 2022 season. The Teams Our men’s first team are coming off the back-end of a successful return to the Capital Premier League, finishing third in 2021. There is a core group of players ready to take on the tough 2022 CapPrem league and push for promotion! Our women’s first team are committed to be a force to be felt this upcoming 2022 season in the women’s premier league! The reserve men’s team did the business last year to secure promotion back into Capital 1. They’re are a large squad of young players thirsty for more success. Our TDP programme is recognised as one of the best across the region. We are fortunate to have a motivated bunch of youth looking develop their technical football skills and mental game. We are also looking to field a junior girls team this year as part of our line up. The Club While Island Bay United is a community club, it is very much a place where the local footballing community go to get their competitive outlet! Well 900 locals in fact, with players across junior, youth and senior teams. We are very focused on ensuring football pathways for our junior and youth players, so any senior coach will need to play a part in ensuring we work together as one team. Underpinned by a core group of volunteers, anyone joining the coaching team needs will be introduced to the family, where we all support each other to succeed. Applications If you want to know more - feel free to reach out to Bruno Bordignon or Paul Muollo (details on our website) - both are free to grab a coffee or confidential chat. Otherwise, please send applications to clubpresident@islandbayunited.org <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " >

    • IBU U14 Christchurch International Cup Winners 2021
      • As the wind howls and the rain descends its fun to reflect on yesterdays great 3-2 finals win for the U14 Sharks over the highly fancied Nomads in the Christchurch International Cup. In a great team performance it may be seem a little churlish to single out individuals but it was hard to not notice the performances of the following players in the spine of the team. Firstly keeper Rouge Espinosa, who comes to us all the way from Barcelona, had a great tournament, was unbeaten until the final, and was a calming presence between the sticks in the final as the Nomads advanced more and more on goal as the game progressed. Captain and centre back Nic “the Great Wall” Ball snuffed out many promising Nomad attacks with his no nonsense defending and also “chipped in” with some wonderful dead ball deliveries the first of which resulted in the slightly bizarre own goal that got IBU on the score sheet first. In midfield, North Wellington guest player Miles Woodhall, born in England, more than justified his inclusion with a tireless & determined display against the robust Nomads team and topped things off with a wonderful individual goal which took IBU to 3-1 when things had started to look a bit creaky. And last and certainly not least it was impossible to ignore the wonderful skills of striker Luqman Ibrahim, who comes to us from Somalia, flashing home a brilliant second goal from the left early in the game and generally being unplayable with his trickery and athleticism. It’s also wonderful to reflect on the increasing diversity of the wider Island Bay whanau being reflected in the team and bodes well for the club into the future. Lastly a shout out to coach James Prosser for pulling the strings behind the scenes and presiding over a very successful few days for the team and club. I assume the team will be back next year to defend their title…. can’t wait! • 1st team strides out in Capital Premier League in 2021; Easter Friday Wakefield Park; 3:30pm v North Wellington
      • Most of you will be looking forward to a Good Friday but here at Island Bay United we are looking forward to a Great Friday with the return of our Men’s 1st team to the pitch at Wakefield at 3:30pm. We’ve all read Coach James Prosser’s pre-season summary of his settled squad with some exciting new faces to be revealed on the day of the match. It’s hard to imagine the freewheeling action-packed style of the team will have changed much since last season and that style will surely be completely in keeping with the rest of the division. The 2021 Cap Prem division looks extremely challenging and if there are any obvious easy games, I can’t see them. Firstly there will be six hotly contested local derbies. We will line up against other first teams in Upper Hutt City, Tawa, Wellington United and Stop Out, a proud old club who will be desperate to return to the Central league at first time of asking. In terms of 2nd teams we will match it with Olympic, North Wellington, Lower Hutt City, Miramar and Wests. The Wests team may be a bit of an enigma this year as their second team has largely been drafted in to play for last year’s Cap Prem champions Wainuiomata who lost a bunch of players after they were promoted. Whatever the case, the speed and intensity of the games will be a few notches higher than that experienced last year. “Captain Fantastic” Bryn Hickson Rowden noted there will be far less margin for error in defence this season, going on to say that the pre-season games had illustrated that mistakes would duly be punished. As the players step onto the pitch on Friday it will be 191 days since last year’s thrilling Capital 1 grand final win. A lot has changed on the NZ football club landscape during that time. A new National League has been announced with a regional phase that encompasses the Central League. The provincial franchises have been disbanded and four central league club teams, including the Weenix who get automatic entry, will play in a ten team comp culminating in a National League final in late spring. There is a mandated focus on Youth and, for example, in the Central League all teams must now start each game with two U20 players on the pitch. This has led to a flood of U20 players being named in Central League squads, indeed of the 2019 IBU U17 team there are at least 13 players scattered across various squads. Why is any of this of any import to us? Because these changes may also affect the makeup of the Cap Prem division as young players vie for starts in the Central League but in fact spend most of their time playing in Cap Prem. A good example of this is a young man from the Valley of Houghton, Flynn Crocker. Flynn was produced by the Houghton Valley School football incubator and played his entire junior and youth football career at IBU until last year when he sought out experience at Cap Prem level with North Wellington, who we welcome on Friday. And what a great fist Flynn made of his first Cap Prem season. He was a regular in a very parsimonious North Wellington defence and topped that off by being named in the U17 All Whites training squad. It is heartwarming to see that there is a 3rd pathway to higher honours besides the 2 elite academies. In a candid admission, he shared with me that the minutes he got with the IBU Cap Prem team at the end of the 2019 season, as we slithered down the relegation snake, had set him up nicely for his 2020 season in terms of personal confidence and coping with the pace of the game. Still only a youngster, in year 12 at Rongotai College, Flynn excels in both Futsal and Football and is well on the way to becoming Buckley Road’s 2nd greatest defender of all time. His personal manager tells me he might not quite make the field on Friday due to a fitness issue but there are plenty more talented youngsters in the North Wellington lineup to take in. Last year the team started well in Cap Prem with their miserly defense, but struggled to score goals. With two thirds of the season completed they found themselves in the drop zone but then began a scarcely believable run where they scored 20 goals in their final 5 games culminating in a last round, away toweling of Cap Prem champions Wainuiomata. If they’d been a racehorse they surely would have been swabbed, but we all know how quickly things can change in the “butterfly effected” world of football. Of course we of the South Coast are made of stern stuff and we all saw last year in the final how the gnarly old Sharks (average age 23) were able to unsettle and overpower the Nix wunderkind with a steely combination of skill, brute force and ribald sea shanties sung in high pitch at halftime. Friday will be an excellent if early test of our game and how it stacks up against a typically young, energetic and skilled side. It even looks like we might sneak the game through before the next Southerly arrives, I can’t wait and I hope to see you there! <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " >

    • Come Celebrate Girls and Women's month at Wakefield Park from 4:30pm on Friday the 19th of March.
      • What an amazing time it is for female football in New Zealand currently, with a number of brilliant initiatives aimed at getting young players into the sport and a World Cup just around the corner in 2023. For the next generation of elite players, pathways in America and Europe are being trail blazed by home grown champions such as Abby Erceg and it shouldn’t be too long before we have a professional women’s team in Australia’s W-League. Here at Island Bay United we have had a record number of junior female registrations this year so to acknowledge both this groundswell and NZ Footballs Girls and Women's month we, in concert with Capital Football, are hosting a fun filled celebration at Wakefield Park from 4:30pm on Friday the 19th of March. There will be fun games organized by Capital Football staff, spot prizes for those wanting to give football a try, a BBQ, a boot swap and the opportunity to talk club staff about the prospect of playing in 2021. Whether you already have a poster of Megan Rapinoe on your wall or are just curious about the buzz surrounding female football this is the event for you! For more information check out our website or email girlsonlycoordinator@islandbayunited.org See you at Wakefield on the 19th <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " >

Enjoy the festivities and we’ll see you down at Wakefield Park in 2021 engaged in the sport that we all love All the best from the Club Committee
