Thank You, Ten - A Musical Celebration
- Wellington Footlights
- In 2024, The Wellington Footlights Society are celebrating 10 years of bringing musical theatre to the Wellington stage, and what better way to celebrate than reflecting on a decade of music, performance and community in our biggest musical revue yet - Thank You, Ten: A Musical Celebration. Thank You, Ten will take audiences on a journey across the catalogue of Footlights shows, performing one musical number from each production the troupe has staged in the last ten years, some in the form in which we know and love, and others with twists you might not expect. Following several challenging years for our communities, Thank You, Ten also aims to celebrate all the joy and support which theatre brings to the lives of so many, and as such Wellington Footlights are excited to be partnering with the Mental Health Foundation for this production, donating $3 from every ticket sold to the charity.

A trip to the Empire above Pae Kawakawa
- Wellington Scoop
- Last Sunday my family found ourselves unexpectedly home early from a class noho marae. So we ended up doing a cycling trip to the Empire Cinema in Island Bay to see Encanto Reo Māori. Because the cycleway connection in Berhampore is only half built, we took a short-cut from our home in Berhampore to get to the Parade. The kids were very keen, as they always are, to get their “bikes on the road.” These streets from Adelaide Road in Berhampore to the Parade in Island Bay, Tapu te Ranga, are another group of city streets built above waterways. The Pae Kawakawa stream starts near Macalister Park and runs along these roads with feeder streams in Mornington and Southgate as well.

Derek Jarman: Delphinium Days
- The Dowse Art Museum
- Artist and activist Derek Jarman (1942-1994) is one of the most important and influential figures in twentieth century British culture. As an early campaigner for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and people living with HIV and AIDs, he created art that sought to challenge the normative culture and reigning neoliberal politics of his (and our) times. Jarman’s prolific artistic practice spanned painting, film, installation, writing, set design and performance. Possibly his most enduring legacy is his garden and former home of Prospect Cottage in Dungeness—a refuge and retreat that fuelled his creativity and has become a site of pilgrimage for visitors worldwide. Jarman is perhaps best known today as a pioneer of experimental film, while his fusing of art and activism is especially important in the development of many queer artistic practices.

Common Ground?
- Thistle Hall Community Venue
- This event is part of the Aotearoa Festival of Architecture, by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects. When Kaikoura shook, photographer Andy Spain got Wellington's list of earthquake prone buildings and started photographing them. The idea of fixing time became appealing, as many of the buildings were demolished. When asked to exhibit them together however, Andy began to ask what these remnants meant. He visited the petals saved from Athfield's church of First Church of Christ Scientist and saw their fragility. He talked to architects about remedial work which never saw the light of day. What were the consequences of all these traces existing in a time when the fates of many Wellington buildings are so contested? Where heritage competes with social housing, which competes with sustainable reuse, and so on. So, this exhibition is not about the photographs that have been taken, or the drawings drawn, or the artworks saved. It is about how we decide to use these remnants, and what stories we want them to tell.

Review: Ngā Rorirori
- Salient
- After debuting in 2022 with great success, Ngā Rorirori is back and better than ever. Combining contemporary dance, commedia farce, and traditional theatre, this show is like no other Māori lands settlement story you've seen before. Set in the wharekai of a rural marae, Ngā Rorirori centres around a brother and sister's newfound ownership of their rohe as the last two members of their hapū. Pillow, the tungane (Manuel Solomon), is a convicted fraudster recently released from prison looking to sink his teeth into another cash-grab project. Manuela, the pōtiki (Mycah Keall), is a forthright activist trying to keep her whānau from falling apart. As the new owners, they have an incredible responsibility placed on them. And today is the day that the Department of Whakapapa, Whenua and Whatever will come to cement their title as rangatira. Will Pillow give up the whenua to make some big-time mulla? Or will Manuela save the day with mana wāhine?

Aotearoa's first solar-battery powered Community Emergency Hub
- Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office (WREMO)
- Innovative post-disaster emergency telecommunications implemented at Naenae Community Emergency Hub. After a major disaster like an earthquake or storm, damaged infrastructure and power outages can make it hard for people to stay connected with loved ones and services. This can impact community well-being, as well as response and recovery efforts. To address this, a pilot project was implemented to test an innovative solution that will provide power and internet access to the community after a disaster.
