New Zealand’s only botanic garden dedicated solely to native plants, and one hundred hectares of ancient and regenerating forest, all of it just a few kilometres from Wellington’s CBD. Ōtari-Wilton’s Bush is designated a six-star Garden of International Significance by the New Zealand’s Gardens Trust of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture.

    • Final plant sale of the year
      • Now here’s a sight to behold. Ōtari plants for sale. We have a rather big plant sale coming up and these are just some of the offerings. All the sale plants have been propagated in our Trust’s own nursery from the Ōtari garden collections, and carefully selected to suit Wellington garden conditions. This will be the year’s final sale: the plants need homes! Our nursery manager/chief propagator/green-fingered Jane will be there to discuss and advise about the best options for your garden.

      • Stories of native orchid conservation research at Ōtari impressed an international audience of orchid specialists, in Perth in September. Scientists from the Lions Ōtari Plant Conservation Laboratory madeJennifer Alderton-Moss and her winning poster Jennifer Alderton-Moss and her winning poster presentations to the 8th International Orchid Conservation Congress on their groundbreaking research undertaken around the germination of rare native orchids.

      • Did you know that anyone can be a Wikipedia writer, or photographer? If you’d like to learn how, with a focus on New Zealand species, there’s a chance coming soon at Ōtari-Wilton’s Bush. A Wikipedia ‘New Zealand species edit-a-thon’ is being run this month at Ōtari and anyone can register. The event will be hosted by Heidi Meudt, Botany Curator at Te Papa, Siobhan Leachman, Wikimedia Laureate 2023, and Christine Richardson, with support from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand and Wellington Gardens.

    • Community and plants the stars of a great Open Day
      • Community and plants were the obvious themes at the annual Ōtari Open Day, on September 14. Plant sales were hugely popular – this was the first Open Day that all the plants on sale were propagated from the Ōtari collections in the Trust’s own nursery, thanks to the huge efforts of Jane Humble, Lynley Trower and other volunteers, supported by Ōtari garden staff. Ōtari gardeners and expert Behind the scenes, Ōtari Nursery tour Behind the scenes, Ōtari Nursery tour botanists were on hand to advise those keen to spread the native plant love into their home gardens. Others took the chance for a tour of the special plants being raised in the Ōtari Nursery.

    • Voices of the Kaiwharawhara
      • In 2022, the Voices of the Kaiwharawhara communications project was completed by Science Masters student Janel Hull, as part of her Science in Society Student Research for Science Communication at Victoria University of Wellington. Janel aimed to tell inspirational stories about Wellingtonians working towards restoring the Kaiwharawhara Stream. These stories highlighted volunteers, Māori, citizen scientists, scientists, youth, and business leaders, and included some of our Trust members.

    • Allan Mere Award for our Dr Carol West
      • In September we learned that Dr Carol West, Chair of the Ōtari-Wilton’s Bush Trust (OWBT), was to be awarded the Allan Mere for 2022. The Allan Mere is awarded by the New Zealand Botanical Society to recognize outstanding botanists who make significant contributions to New Zealand botany. The pounamu mere is named after Harry Howard Allan – the first Director of the former DSIR Botany Division, and author of the first volume of the DSIR New Zealand Flora series.

      • Nationally significant research to save rare native orchids is being undertaken in a tiny science lab at Ōtari-Wilton’s Bush in Wellington. Finding Ōtari conservation and science advisor Dr Karin van der Walt and research technician Jennifer Alderton-Moss is a bit of a mission. The pair work from a small cottage behind Ōtari’s plant nursery, hidden from visitors who wander the trails exploring New Zealand’s single largest collection of native plants.
