Te Ngākau Precinct Development Plan consultation
- Kōrero Mai | Let's Talk | Wellington City Council
- Wellingtonians have told us they want a city that is vibrant, resilient, and creative, so we’re investing in the improvements that our city needs to flourish. Right now, Wellington is in a period of transition, as we upgrade our infrastructure to create a city where people and nature thrive. One of the most important projects is the revitalisation of the heart of our city, the precinct around Te Ngākau Civic Square. Te Ngākau Civic Precinct is a large area of land near the waterfront in central Wellington, approximately 3.36 hectares (33,600sqm). The precinct is home to some of our most important cultural, creative, and civic functions such as Te Matapihi Central Library, Wellington Town Hall and City Gallery. When all the work in Te Ngākau is finished, it will be a place that we can all be proud of – full of creativity, culture, and excitement, both day and night.

Old vinyl returned to WCL after 30 years
- Wellington City Libraries
- We look back at our past and current vinyl collections, as some records from our original collection have recently been returned to us after 30 years. Wellington City Libraries has always had a music collection for our patrons to borrow. The original format for this service was, of course, vinyl. The Wellington City Library vinyl collection dates back to when the 1939 Library (later to become the City Art Gallery in 1992) opened. At that time they wanted to make a statement with ‘new’ and ‘modern’ collections, the establishment of a “gramophone record” collection and a listening room was part of that.

Amelia Bentley on Keeping Her Art Sacred
- Salient
- Amelia Bentley is an artist who captures beauty with both brush and intellect, balancing her life between her passion for art and a more academic career path. Currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Science at Te Herenga Waka, Amelia is majoring in Data Science and Psychology, disciplines that may seem worlds apart from her deep connection to painting. Growing up in Wellington, the proximity of Victoria University allowed her to pursue her dual passions while remaining close to home. But this balance between art and academia has been anything but simple.

Vaiei Tupuna
- Te Pātaka Toi Adam Art Gallery
- 4 October – 15 December 2024 Vaiei Tupuna is an exhibition of contemporary tapa from across Moana Nui that brings together newly commissioned responses to taonga from the collections of Ngā Puhipuhi o Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection and The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, alongside historic and contemporary artworks that acknowledge the tupuna and atua who activate this practice. Gifted by Sarah Vaki, elder and master tapa maker from Fatu Hiva in the Marquesas, the title of the exhibition translates as “heritage of our ancestors”. Vaiei Tupuna takes up these shared genealogies and histories of tapa to celebrate the vitality of the artform in the present, and to extend and build knowledge for the future. Hina, the atua of tapa makers, is present throughout Vaiei Tupuna.

Proposed Crofton Downs walking and biking trails
- Kōrero Mai | Let's Talk | Wellington City Council
- Trails Wellington and Korimako Track Builders are proposing new mountain biking and walking trails in the Wellington Outer Green Belt above the suburb of Crofton Downs. The proposed trails would be on the eastern side of Te Wharangi Ridge, linking up to the Skyline Track that runs along the ridgetop. It's proposed that three mountain-bike-priority trails be built, and one shared walking/biking trail. If given approval, they would be gradually built over time depending on the community’s needs, but we are asking for feedback now so we can plan for the future.

Killing Kāinga Ora
- Wellington Scoop
- The Luxon-led government continues its attack on anything that the Labour Party ever managed to do, with the release of news about the Kāinga Ora housing projects. Most of them, it seems, have been killed off. “Brakes put on more than 370 Kāinga Ora housing developments nationally”. In Wellington the following projects are stopped: Arlington redevelopment and Evans Bay Parade, with other projects stopped in the Hutt, Naenae, Wainuiomata, and Porirua. The list says “paused.” But I know a dead duck when I see one.

Carnival of Souls
- Vogelmorn Community Group
- October is here - and to get into the mood for Halloween and our Spooky Disco we're kicking off October with a Spooky Screening of Cult Classic - "Carnival of Souls (1962)" - Thursday October 3rd - Free Entry - Starts at 7:30pm Bar & Restaurant (Smoked & Pickled) will be open from 3pm for pre-show and during-show kai --- A young woman (Candace Hilligoss) in a small Kansas town survives a drag race accident, then agrees to take a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she is haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Made by industrial filmmakers on a small budget, the eerily effective B-movie classic Carnival of Souls was intended to have “the look of a Bergman and the feel of a Cocteau”—and, with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score, it succeeds. Herk Harvey’s macabre masterpiece gained a cult following on late-night television and continues to inspire filmmakers today --- See you there
