Deliveries and logistics: Golden Mile and citywide
- Talk Wellington
- Nervousness about possible car-freeing of the Golden Mile includes “But what about deliveries?!” Here’s a peek into what’s happening right now with urban deliveries and logistics Much of the reported consternation for Golden Mile-area retailers is about delivery drivers’ current struggles to deliver and fetch things, and the fear that this will only get worse.

August, almost!!
- Slow Boat Records
- Crikey, and just when it seemed like it was only February, suddenly it was blimmin’ AUGUST, already – almost like we lost a couple of months there…Not gonna lie – the lockdown was not entirely unpleasant for us – a good chance to charge the batteries, and look at some things from a different perspective – working smarter rather than necessarily just harder.

line-height:150% !important; } } Together we can end homelessness Ensuring that our taumai have a voice At DCM, we are committed to ensuring that our taumai* have a voice – at DCM and in Aotearoa. Many of us have been sharing stories of lock-down; we wanted to ensure that the experience of taumai over this time was also captured and shared. We interviewed 65 of our taumai and will share some of their insights over the next few updates. We asked taumai to name the biggest challenges of the period for them, as well as what they enjoyed most about lock-down. An empty Wellington city, 2 April 2020 What have been the biggest challenges for you? Staying indoors, not being able to go out - 33% Not being able to spend time with friends or whānau - 27% Not being able to do the things I enjoy, missing my routine - 29% There haven’t been any challenges - 15% What have you enjoyed most about lock-down? One third commented that they had not enjoyed anything about this period (“Nothing really”; “I enjoyed nothing, just carried on with my life”), but two thirds spoke about the positives of lock-down. They had enjoyed the quiet, time with family, being busy and getting exercise - “watching TV and listening to music”, “cleaning my house”, “I have been enjoying the long walks daily” and “getting out and getting fresh air”. And then there were those who most enjoyed not having much to do – “the best thing has been not having to do anything”, “being lazy” and “we don’t have to do so many things”. Several referred to the positives of reduced alcohol and drug use: “We are not drinking as much as we used to.” “I have given up drinking and have been using my money for much needed things for my home. Utility bills and food. I always have food now.” “I've been getting off the drugs.” “Getting off the drugs means I've been enjoying food more.” “I didn’t gamble.” But the very best thing about lock-down, mentioned by 25% of those we spoke with, was having a roof over their heads or moving in to a home: “Not having to worry about where I am going to stay.” “Showers, warm bed, a roof.” “Having my own apartment, I can make a drink when I want to, turn my TV on.” “Having a place to stay - just knowing there was somewhere.” “Being safe and having a roof over my head.” “Being in a motel has made me feel safe and warm.” “I have coped well, better now that I am housed.” <!-- --> General Election 2020 We are excited to also share with you another way in which we are ensuring our taumai have a voice in Aotearoa. With the support of the Electoral Commission, we have been encouraging our taumai to enrol to vote, and look forward to having a polling booth here at DCM to ensure voting is as accessible for our taumai as possible. Among the many taumai we've enrolled this month is Manu. Manu is a Māori man in his late 50s who has never voted in his lifetime. He is now signed up to the Māori electorate and is looking forward to voting in his first-ever election right here at DCM. <!-- --> Checking in with Arthur - two years later We celebrate each time one of our taumai is housed; we also celebrate the hard mahi they put in to sustaining that tenancy, often with the ongoing support of DCM kaimahi. Two years ago we introduced you to Arthur. Arthur was delighted to have his own whare after months of being without shelter. But DCM’s support extended beyond getting Arthur into his own whare. He was supported through the DCM Dental Service to get a new set of teeth, and DCM’s volunteer audiologist treated him so he was able to hear much better. “DCM helped me with pretty much everything,” Arthur says. “They gave me food parcels, supported me to get my license back and got a copy of my birth certificate.” Another important support DCM was able to offer was to visit Arthur in his whare to make sure everything was going OK. This month marked another milestone for Arthur - he has now been housed for two years. Arthur has whānau living with him, and is taking part in his local community, attending a weekly community group at a local church. He also works part time, an amazing accomplishment two years on from living on the streets. Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui Arthur! You can read the story we shared two years ago when Arthur was first housed. Would you like to support someone who has recently moved in to their own home? We would welcome donations of microwaves for our taumai. Contact us or find other ways to support us here. *We call the people we work with taumai, meaning to settle. This reflects the journey we embark on together to become settled, stable and well. <!-- --> Please help us get the message out there! Forward this email on to everyone you can think of who may be interested in how to respond to homelessness, and just generally people who are passionate about Wellington. <!-- --> Support DCM! It is Gala day for women’s rugby so this means that the fixture is to be played out at Fraser Park on the artificial turf. This is a big day for Women’s rugby and a big day for Dave Jensen who’s family have generously donated this trophy. There aren’t many games left for the Impalas this season so if you have been thinking about coming along to watch this is your ideal game! I know the team would love to see some supporters! Wear some OBU colours or make yourself known to the team staff by giving them the nod and the thumbs up! More about the cup itself The Jensen Family Cup is to be played between the Marist St Pats women and Old Boys University Impala teams. It has been donated by the Jensen family. Michael Jensen was a player in the first-ever Marist St Pats trophy-winning side, the Junior 1st’s in 1971. He also played for Wellington Juniors in the same year. Dave Jensen was the coach of the first-ever Old Boys University Women’s trophy-winning team in 2016. He also went on to be a part of the Wellington Pride coaching set up. The Jensen Family Cup is believed to be the first interclub trophy for women’s rugby in Wellington. The post Jensen Family Cup – OBU Impalas vs MSP Women appeared first on OBU Rugby.

MSP have recruited well this season particularly in the backs and welcomed some Hurricanes experience in the Proctor brothers to the starting line-up. It was old-timers day for MSP and a fair few of the older members had turned out to their clubrooms to preload! Conditions The weather was fine with the wind blowing diagonally down the pitch from the north into the south-eastern corner where the field dips away a little. the sun was low in the first half and difficult for OBU to deal with playing into it from the southeastern corner. It would be even worse for MSP in the second half. OBU was playing from Gym end toward the road in the first half. John ‘JC’ Cable & Jaesen Sumner were kindly present to keep an eye on the play while I wrestled with the screen lock on my phone. We are positioned up beside the video platform on the northern side. Notable performances The front row was mighty but didn’t really get the rewards it may have felt entitled to. The lineout applied lots of pressure and caused plenty of mistakes from MSP Paddy Carter was immense around the field. He is becoming a valuable utility player covering locks and flanks and is certainly a lineout option with outstanding aerial skills whichever position he is in. Shamus and Caleb deserve a mention every week. Hardworking, rugged and abrasive all over the park. In the backs, Sam Reid was once again rock-solid barely making a mistake. Ty Poe is a consistent performer growing each week. Callum and Dale are a great pairing of skill, speed and determination. Kyle really stood up in this match and had several classy touches including the chip and regather for the try. How the game unfolded 2 mins The tone for the match was set early scrum-wise by OBU. A powerful shunt spoilt the MSP feed which resulted in a knock-on in the backline due to the backfoot ball. 5 mins A series of pick and goes near the MSP line in the left corner resulted in a penalty to OBU. Dale steps up and nails the shot on the 22m line about 15 in from the left touchline OBU 3-0 6 mins From the kick-off there is a penalty for a high shot on Paddy. The penalty kick doesn’t find touch. The kick is followed up well enough to pressure MSP whop are finally able to clear to the touch after a couple of minor wobbles. 9 mins MSP manages to get it wide to their left side close to the touchline in front of us. The MSP player makes a great burst upfield but eventually, it breaks down and we go back to the penalty the ref was playing advantage for. The shot is successfully taken from 35 metres out and just to the right of the posts. 3-3 13 mins MSP puts up an up and under (or ‘Gary Owen’ for the northerners), then they regain at the ensuing ruck and the halfback chips downfield. Sam Reid has no choice but to run it into touch near our line on the far side of the paddock. From the lineout MSP throw is not straight so OBU gets to clear from the scrum. Pressure diffused for now. 17 mins MSP sets up a driving maul from a lineout but OBU gets the drive on. The maul breaks up with MSP players in behind our forwards. MSP flanker and halfback both have a dab at the line but it’s the right-winger who busts through for the score. The conversion misses. MSP 8-3 20 mins OBU charge down an MSP clearing kick. Ty Poe claims the loose ball and scores it under the sticks. The conversion was successful. OBU 10-8 23 mins A great move from OBU down the left-hand side of the field, Shamus makes lots of ground commits the defence and sets Paddy for the pass but it goes behind Paddy. MSP runs it out. There is a brief altercation. The Assistant Referee puts his flag out and a discussion ensues with the ref. The referee calls the captains together and presumably issues a warning to both teams to keep it clean despite what looked like a punch thrown by the red player. 24 mins Kyle darts down the blindside and chips past the first line of defence. He regathers under pressure from 3 defenders and scoots the rest of the way down the far sideline to score it in the corner. Conversion unsuccessful. OBU 15-8 28 mins Shamus crashes through the defence with some good pace and offloads to Finbarr. Reece ratchets up the pressure with an attack down the close touchline. OBU is right on the MSP goal line but are penalised. Can’t tell from our position what it was for. Unfortunately, someone says something to the ref so we deservedly get marched 10 metres. 30 mins OBU is in MSPs half again and looking likely but are penalised for holding on in the tackle. Good play from MSP flanker to beat the cleaners to the ball. MSP kick into the far corner. From the lineout MSP over-throw the ball and Kyle makes a great 40-meter clearance. 39 mins MSP is penalised for backs offside. Callum steps up to have a long-range shot from just inside the MSP half and out to the left. Kick misses Halftime OBU 15-8 41 mins MSP on the attack, OBU backs are caught offside 35 metres out and slightly to the right of the posts. Kick landed OBU 15-11 46 mins A long sequence of pick and goes on the MSP line. An MSP player crashes over the top believing he is onside and concedes a very obvious penalty. Dale successfully takes the shot. OBU 18-11 49 mins OBU concede a penalty for holding near the 10-metre line straight out in front. Kick is successfully taken. OBU 18-14 52 mins Paddy claims the kickoff with a memorable AFL-style leap. 55 mins OBU move the ball wide to Sam Reid who slips through the first tackle but can’t get through the second and eventually the ball runs into touch. MSP again overthrow the lineout. Morgan tries to gather the ball but knocks it on. MSP feed to the scrum. 57 mins MSP manages to clear the scrum which is under pressure and begin a promising period of attack near the OBU line. OBU player gest over the ball and wins the penalty which is cleared to touch taking some of the pressure off but we lose the lineout. Matt Fowler makes it on for his 50th replacing Kyle Preston at the base of the scrum. Sam Godwin on James Poloniati Off 60 mins A great driving maul from OBU. Eventually, MSP concedes the penalty and OBU elects to kick to the corner. Another great driving maul and an MSP forward rolls the dice by dropping it and gets away with it this time. Eventually, OBU knocks the ball forward. 63 mins MSP clear their line from a massive kick by James Proctor playing at 2nd 5. He kicked from the 5-meter line and the ball eventually goes out just on OBUs side of halfway. 66 mins Almost an action replay with another great clearing kick from Proctor. 73 mins MSP are hot on the attack and looking dangerous. There is an OBU player down. It turns out to be Matt Fowler in his 50th. Kyle comes on to replace him as a precaution. Morgan comes back on sporting a bandage on his head. I missed where he went off! Sam Coombs leaves the field. Taine Plumtree is replaced by Josh Gimblett 75 mins There is a series of Pick and goes on our line. Eventually #19 James Tuia crashes over. Conversion unsuccessful. MSP 19-18 75 mins Sam Coombs is on for Finbarr Kerr-Newell and somewhere along the way Matt Sleith came on at hooker for Kenan Gillson. OBU just need to hold the ball and work it back up the field to get in position to pressure MSP into a mistake. OBU puts the drive on from a lineout but the ball is knocked on. 78 mins OBU desperate now tries to run it out to the other end of the field but MSP turn the ball over in our 22 and the 1st 5 for MSP lines up and slots the drop goal. MSP 22-18 That’s the way the match ended. A riveting game with a very tight finish. I get the feeling that this match could well be replayed over the coming weeks in a semi or a final, but let’s not count our chickens just yet. Another almighty challenge awaits against Tawa out at Lyndhurst Park next week. Final Score MSP 22-18 The post Match Report Rd 6 Swindale – OBU lose first 2020 match to MSP appeared first on OBU Rugby.

Future of the Central Library consultation
- Wellington City Council
- The Central Library has been our city’s living room and a vital part of our vibrant inner city for decades. The building itself isn’t safe to use. There are several ways to make it safe for people to be in, which also brings new possibilities in using the space. This is our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to set up the central library to continue to support Wellington's diverse communities for at least the next 50 years. Before decisions can be made on the future Central Library in October 2020 - we need to know what you think!

History tells us that you can never assume that you’ve beaten Upper Hutt until the final whistle. They certainly stuck with us in the first half and at half time we knew we were in a tight contest. Fortunately OBU had a strong bench and started to run away in the last quarter. Conditions The forecasters had told us it would be overcast and dry. It was overcast and wet with frequent showers throughout the match. It was cool but not bitterly cold. What little wind their was had little effect on the play. The surface was good, a bit sticky but firm with no pooling of water. OBU was playing from the Basin Reserve end in the first half. John ‘JC’ Cable was kindly present to correct my errors again. Notable performances Dale once again ran the back-line magnificently and kicked well when the commentators curse wasn’t applied! Both halfbacks were a nuisance for Upper Hutt today with Kyle starting and Matt Fowler taking over around the 50 minute mark. We’re lucky to have 2 halfbacks of this calibre. The Plumtree boys both played well. Both delivered the last pass for the other to score late in the second half. Once again the whole front row deserves massive ups for a truly dominant performance. There is a danger this bullet point will remain for the whole season! The locking combination of James and Taine together was very physical at set piece and the breakdown. Both have also proved that they’re no slouches where the goal-line is concerned. The newer players in their first few games for OBU at this level are finding their feet and becoming worthy contributors. Lawry, Josh, Tiaki, Olly all performing well. Keep it up lads! Kenan Gillson also had a busy game chalking up the full 80 minutes and was part of an efficient and lineout and dominant scrum. Plenty of ruck & maul and defense too. How the game unfolded 2 mins There is an impressive lineout drive followed by some slick hands in the backs. The ball is moved to the left with a quick flick on to Sam Godwin who dives over, try! The conversion from wide is good OBU 7-0 8 mins Lineout penalty to Upper Hutt about 38 metres out in front. It drops short and is cleared 12 mins Upper Hutt take the lineout from a penalty and setup the drive. They then execute a cut move on the centre who goes through and scores it under the sticks. Easy conversion taken and scores are locked. 7-7 18 mins Fui heads to the sideline to get some cranial claret taken care of. Lawry takes the field but this week the fan club have a 30 second delay before the cheer for some reason! 20 mins Jack Green goes down in a heap near the left-hand touch about the 10m line after a move down the sideline. The referee shows no sympathy and continues with the next scrum back infield to leave Jack the indignity of the bum shuffle to get off the field! Oliver Paotonu replaces Jack for the rest of the game. It looks like it might be a hamstring injury. Hopefully it’s not too severe and Jack is back with the team soon. The Upper Hutt Far Side boys claim that it could only be a back with a hamstring injury as forwards think that’s something you roast on Sundays. 22 mins Good move to the right side of the field. The ref plays advantage for the Upper Hutt backs being offside. Knowing the advantage is there OBU kick for the corner but it just goes out in the corner before any scoreboard adjustments are needed. We come back for the penalty and elect to take the shot 22m out and handily placed to the middle. But just as we were banking on it we accidentally applied the commentators curse and the shot misses. 25 mins Fui comes back with a bandage that the 1980s would be proud of and Lawry takes a seat. 26 mins OBU takes the lineout from a penalty deep in Upper Hutt’s half. There are several pick and go’s on the Upper Hutt line with Sam Godwin among those having a good dig at the line until James Poloniati completes the move by crashing over to the right of the posts. Conversion successful. OBU 14-7 That’s the way it stayed until half time. 42 mins OBU are penalised for hands in the ruck. Upper Hutt take the shot in front about 30 meters out. Once again commentators curse strikes as it looks like an easy shot but misses. 45 mins The first lot of tactical subs come on – Shamus, Paddy and Morgan for his 50th on and Sam Coombs, Tiaki and Sam Godwin off. All those sitting down contributed well to the cause! 46 mins There is a frantic OBU attack with quick pick and go’s on the Upper Hutt line. Upper Hutt do well to repel the attack for now and it’s held up in goal. OBU feed to the scrum. 48 mins The OBU scrum marches the Rams back and Shamus takes the spoils from number 8. Conversion successful. Matt Fowler comes on for Kyle Preston. OBU 21-7 52 mins Upper Hutt fumble a lineout in their own half. It ends up with James Poloniati. From the resulting melee it comes out to Paddy Carter in the middle of the pitch who with horns locked bumps a Ram back on his backside ensuring the shorts will need a wash. He then runs it into the line with good pace and crashes over near the corner. The extras are added. OBU 28-7 53 mins Josh Gimblett gets a break on the bench after a hard working half. Matt Sleith gets a run on the side of the scrum. The kickoff ends up short so we have a scrum on halfway. There is some great play off the back of a solid scrum from Shamus and some clever interplay between Sam Reid and Reece but it breaks down. 65 mins Lawry comes on for Fui. There is then some good play from Upper Hutt giving themselves every chance but frustratingly for them the last pass goes to grass and dribbles over the sideline. 71 mins Upper Hutt penalised for holding on. The quick tap is taken and from the next phase Reece drops a nice inside ball to brother Taine who tracks it in to get the 5. Conversion misses. OBU 33-7 74 mins OBU break out of their own half with some fast work. OBU got in behind the defensive line a couple of times and it looked like Callum H would take it all the way for a second but just got caught. From the phase the ball is moved wide to the left and Taine returns the favour to brother Reece with the last pass leaving a run to the corner. Conversion drifts away. Final Score OBU 38-7 The post Match Report Rd 5 Swindale – OBU take the spoils against a determined Upper Hutt Rams appeared first on OBU Rugby.

Hundy Club Profile: Stu Simonsen
- Old Boys - University Rugby Club
- #image_497190556 { width: 42%; } #image_379414967 { width: 46%; } #image_562905773 { width: 100%; } We sat down with Stu Simonsen to talk about rugby and find out what he’s been up to lately! Tell us about where you came from to join OBU? Played at Wellington college and a few lads went to obu. I went back to my junior club Wellington club. 2002-03 played 21s then press as they were on the way out. 04 headed over to obu as I knew a few players there already. What is your favourite on-field memory? 2015 jubilee cup final. Never thought I would play a JC final. We had a dam good team What is your favourite off-field memory? Courtys at Boyd Wilson followed by the interesting walks back down to the Cambridge. Are you involved in rugby these days? Tell us about it. After the 2017 season I felt burnt out and needed a break from rugby. I started going to watch games I’d never seen before like Norths v Ories, HOBM v MSP. That was enjoyable. Then in 2019 I thought I would go and play down the road from home at Paremata-Plimmerton. My brother in-law James “Smokey” Corcoran has played there as well for the last few years. knowing a few other players also made it easy to don the boots again. Now in my second year and I’m still playing premier. I have a few small niggles hanging around, and I’m just managing these as they pop up. I really enjoy looking on at some of our young front rowers whilst on the side lines and helping the next generation of players here that might not get that position specific detail that I had at OBU. Filming line out throwing and adding my 2 cents in where available helps these guys out. Who knows what next year will bring playing wise. I’ll make up my mind when preseason rolls around if my calf’s hold strong or id they wilt! What’s life like after OBU? Where are you these days? Work, family. Family wise my wife Hayley and I have got two kids Blake 5 and Zara 3. As for work – I’m in partnership with Hayley’s parents in Exceed doors and window maintenance, a franchise in the Hutt valley. Within the next couple of years we will take over and become the full owners. Life after OBU is pretty much the same as before. Just a different color jersey on Saturday! Any messages of inspiration you want to pass back to the Goat community? Don’t believe the coach all the time! Trust your instincts Thanks Stu. Controversial last call there! The phone might start ringing! We’ll look forward to seeing Stu at the Hundy club on Old-timers day and on the sideline somewhere next season or even better in the clubrooms! The law and the Library
- Wellington Scoop
- Our Central Library is hugely missed by so many of us, a place to go, to be, without cost or expectation, a place to learn, a place to find adventure in the pages of a good book, a place that added life to Te Ngakau Civic Square – the heart of our city. There is strong demand ‘to just reopen it.’ Problem is the Council cannot ‘just reopen it’.

It was a beautiful sunny day but the sun was quite low on the horizon making it difficult playing into it. There was no wind of any concern and the mercury struggled to get to double digits. Commentary coming to you from the scoreboard grandstand.John ‘JC’ Cable was kindly present to correct my errors.Notable performancesSam Coombs’ nose for the line has to earn him a spot on the list!Dale Sabbagh has become a true leader in the backline over the last few years and the team as a whole. His goalkicking was superb, he was always dangerous on the attack and precise on defence.Matt Fowler was very busy and must have been annoying for the Johnsonville forwards! His distribution was solid and his dabs around the side meant defenders had to stay on him rather than drifting out to the ball runners. It was good to see Reece Plumtree back at this level. He only had 2 or 3 runs but they counted. The whole front row deserves massive ups for a truly dominant performance. The locking combination of James and Taine together with Caleb on the flank gives some great height at the lineout and all three showed great skills and pace around the park while still doing the tight work when needed. How the game unfolded5 mins – OBU turnover a Johnsonville lineout the ball goes out to the left and back to the right a few times before Sam Coombs crashes over the line. Converted by Dale Sabbagh7-0 OBU lead11 mins – Johnsonville on the attack. OBU turns it over and Callum Harkin clears it downfield for Sam Reid to chase. Sam gets up to pressure well but with the naked eye, it looked like he was stepped and instinctively put the foot out which partially tripped the Johnsonville player. Clubrooms discussion afterwards reveals Sam says he went to kick the ball as the Johnsonville player picked it up. Either way, it doesn’t matter the ref calls him over to issue the yellow card.17 mins – OBU is camped on the Johnsonville line. After a few pick and goes Shamus Langton charges to the right side of the ruck and gets over but is held up.18 mins – From the resulting scrum Dale runs it around the outside of the defence and into the right-hand corner. The ref calls it back for a scrum to Johnsonville. I assume it was lost forward in the dive but the referees signal isn’t clear from my position.22 mins – OBU elects a scrum deep in Johnsonville territory after taking the penalty advantage. The ball is cleared to the right and Dale goes around the defenders and dots in the corner and converts it.14-0 OBU lead27 mins – OBU is penalised 30 meters out in front of the sticks the Johnsonville kicker lines it up but launchers a worm-burner. The score is unchanged.37 mins – Matt Fowler breaks around the side of the ruck where Johnsonville had been too slow to mark up. He gets in behind the defence quickly, commits the defender and offloads to Taine Plumtree who saw the opportunity opening up and gassed it to be in support for the pass. Dale converts it.21-0 OBU lead39 mins – Great move down the right-wing. Jack Green runs onto the ball and makes a quick 30 metres before chipping it deep into Johnsonville territory. Matt Fowler runs onto the ball and gets taken in a good solid tackle. There is some phase play before Jack Green gets over the line but it’s knocked on.40 mins – OBU launches a dominant scrum and turns over the Johnsonville feed. Adding insult to injury the scrum drives over the line for Shamus to claim the pushover try. Dale keeps the kicking run intact by slotting the conversion.Half Time 28-0 OBU lead42 mins – OBU makes a mistake running the ball out from our own territory. Johnsonville turns it over. It looks like it’s going to be a regulation run in for the halfback but he gets caught in a good cover tackle. The loosehead prop for Johnsonville ducks around to the right of the posts to claim the pot of gold.28-7 OBU lead45 mins – OBU brings the ball out from their own territory. Caleb Delaney launches a big long cut-out pass to James Poloniati who steams in from about 35 meters to dot down in the corner. Conversion misses. Reece Plumtree comes on for Callum Harkin.33-7 OBU lead52 mins – Shamus runs in a try from around halfway outstripping the defenders for sheer pace. Conversion misses. Subs Caleb, Taine, James, Kenan, Matt Fowler off. Replaced by Sam Godwin, Josh Gimblett, Tiaki Fabish, Matt Sleith and Kyle Preston.38-7 OBU lead55 mins – Great run down the right-wing by Reece with a great inside pass to Sam Reid to finish it off. The conversion was successful. Lawrence Lim on for Fui. Lawry, a popular figure, gets a rousing reception from his mates in the Prem Reserve and Colts teams watching on from up on the terraces.45-7 OBU Lead70 mins – Sam Reid takes a good run down the right-hand side of the field and releases the pass to Reece running off his shoulder. Reece cuts back on the angle to the posts to shake any last hopes of a Johnsonville defender covering.52-7 OBU lead78 mins – Johnsonville penalised in their own 22, quick tap taken but comes to nothing Johnsonville not back 10 so we go again. Eventually, Johnsonville number 15 can’t help but play the ball on the ground. He gets a yellow card for his troubles.Final Score 52-7 to OBUScorersShamus Langton 2 x Tries.Taine Plumtree, Dale Sabbagh, Reece Plumtree, James Poloniati, Sam Reid, Sam Coombs – 1 Try eachDale Sabbagh 6 x ConversionsThe post Match Report Rd 4 Swindale – OBU notch up solid victory in Wellington College homecoming appeared first on OBU Rugby.

Hundy Club Profile: Tomasi Palu
- Old Boys - University Rugby Club
- #image_1200984324 { width: 100%; } #image_2101861458 { width: 100%; } #image_837846994 { width: 100%; } #image_1484466077 { width: 100%; } Tell us about where you came from to join OBU? I left straight from Wellington College to OBU. My good mate Seminar Manu (also a Hundy Club member, a profile on him coming up soon hopefully), convinced me to come across to OBU. I was supposed to be going to Poneke with my brother Dave but my brother eventually came over to OBU and played a season or two around 2008-09. What’s your favourite on-field memory? My personal favourite on-field memory had to be when I scored 4 tries against HOBM. I had a career-ending injury that forced retirement later that season. Another great team on-field memory is definitely the Jubilee Cup wins!! The 2017 OBU team was the best club team I’ve ever played in. Another great memory was the 2015 Jubilee Cup win – this win was really important to me personally and emotionally because of the death of our OBU manager and my good mate Richard ‘Puds’ Newsome the year before. He always kept in touch with me and one of the things he said was you will come back to OBU from Norths and win a Jubilee Cup. To fulfil that vision, was one of the main reasons I came back to OBU and I’m stoked we managed to achieve that, not only to make history that year but also knowing he would have been having a few wets that night watching over us and celebrating. Who was your best coach? I have been coached by some great coaches over the years but the best has been Jamie Williams, our current premier coach. He definitely had a huge impact on my form and to still keep me performing at a high level. He definitely knows the game inside and out and this shows in the results he has achieved with the club since he came into OBU. Who were some of those other coaches? Jake White coached the Tongan team on our 2016 tour to Europe. He was a great coach and was great at keeping the boys engaged by making the video analysis sessions short and using as much Tongan language as he could to keep the players engaged. Jamie Joseph coached me with the Wellington Lions 2008. Chris Boyd with the Wellington Lions & also coached me for Tonga in the 2011 World Cup, when we beat France at the Stadium in Wellington. We knew the crowd would be on our side and they were in full red Tongan attire! Definitely a career highlight for me playing in front of a home crowd (along with family and friends) at the cake tin, while representing my country of origin. I was also coached by John Plumtree at the Wellington Academy during my first year out of college. What’s your favourite off-field memory? The court sessions stand out with some fun times. Also the Jubilee cup after-parties, as well as some mighty nights at the Cambridge including the annual Mr OBU pageant. Are you involved in rugby these days?. I retired from playing in the middle of the 2018 season, upon medical advice of a prolapsed disc in my neck which caused me to end my rugby career abruptly. I started coaching the Queen Margaret’s College 7’s team. The following year we made the national secondary schools 7’s tournament that was hosted in Auckland at King’s college. This was a big achievement for the first ever 7’s team in QMC to qualify for nationals, also a blessing as it was the start of my coaching career. Currently I’m now Director of Rugby for OBU. This includes being the Academy Director of the OBU Academy for male and female university students who play for our club. I helped coach the Premier Men’s team last year and I’ve also completed my World Rugby Level 1 and 2 for Coaching and am working on my Level 3 this year. I also volunteer as an assistant coach for the Colts Black team with Norman Ferguson this year, which is fun and keeps me developing my skills as a coach. Also learning the challenges that all coach’s face, and the many hats they have to wear but I enjoy it with a passion! Any messages of inspiration you want to pass back to the Goat community? Join in and get amongst the Goat herd, and enjoy your playing time!! Once you’ve finished, stay connected, stay involved, because without people we have no community and no club. The next generation of Goat players are always needing Goat mentors and support #OneHerd! You won’t regret it! Thanks Tomasi! You can check Tomasi’s Hundy club profile over here… The post Hundy Club Profile: Tomasi Palu appeared first on OBU Rugby.

Weekly Wrap Up (Week 12, Term 2)
- Wellington High School
- Important Dates Monday 20 July: Start of Term 3 Wednesday 22 July: Parents’ Evening (Senior Students) Monday 27 July: Parents’ Evening (Junior Students) Monday 27 July: Board of Trustees meeting 6pm Important Information Principal’s message In his end of term Principal’s message, Dominic reflects on the events of the past month including our recent open evening and music evening, events which, not so long ago we felt would be unable to take place. To read Dominic’s full report, click here. What’s happening? Open Evening and 2021 enrolment We welcomed over 400 families and whānau to our open evening last Monday on what was possibly the coldest night of the year. Our team of student and staff guides took tours around the campus, students were actively involved in promoting different areas of school life, and everywhere was alive and buzzing with activity. Enrolments are now open for 2021. Our enrolment process starts online at: https://portal.whs.school.nz/index.php/enrolment. If you have any questions, please email Jude Aspinall, our enrolment officer on jude.aspinall@whs.school.nz Music Evening Our Music Evening on Wednesday 1 July gave students the opportunity to showcase their talents. With a range of big band, groups and solo items, pieces in a range of styles and genres, it was a fabulous evening compered, as always by music teacher Fritz Wollner. To view the photo gallery, click here. Instrumental and vocal lessons update If your Junior student is interested in taking instrumental / vocal lessons but has not yet enrolled, please download the form from the Student Hub and hand in or email the completed form to Fritz Wollner Lessons will be reorganised for Terms 3 and 4. If students have not been attending regularly, they need to see Mr Wollner as soon as possible to ensure they do not lose their spot. Tamatha Paul – lunchtime lecture The Feminist Club was delighted to welcome Wellington Councillor Tamatha Paul to deliver this Thursday’s lunchtime lecture. Tamatha (Ngāti Awa / Waikato Tainui) was first elected to Council in 2019 and is one of three Pukehīnau / Lambton Ward counsellors for 2019-2022. As an independent candidate, Tamatha campaigned on issues including zero waste, connecting communities and the importance of prioritising future facing leadership. As can be seen from these pictures, Tamatha’s visit attracted a large audience, keen to welcome and listen to her. Year 10 Computing – Photoshop and political discourse Students in Gus Donaldson’s Year 10 computing course have been developing skills in Photoshop through working on a project on the theme of political discourse. Their work is currently on display in the foyer outside the library. The posters, with the narrative from their creators alongside them, are powerful pieces of work that clearly exemplify the students’ views and response to current issues in the world around them. The display will remain in place at the start of Term 3 and you are invited to come and view it. WHS Ink – Junior Art club zine 30 Year 9 and 10 students have been working on their own artwork during each week’s WHS Ink sessions. Coordinated by Teacher Aide, Connor Morrison-Mills, this group of talented students’ work is now included in their very own zine. Click on the image below to see more. Outdoor Education’s snowy tramp It has been cold enough for many this week, with the storms and freezing winds around Wellington. The Outdoor Education students showed their mettle by heading out on a tramp in the Tararua range earlier this week. They made it as far as the Powell Hut before the weather conditions made it too risky to continue and they turned back. Achievements He Kākano – AWD Tenpin Bowling On Thursday 2 July, He Kākano students competed in the annual AWD Tenpin Bowling competition against students from other Wellington colleges. All students and staff had a fantastic time and there were some really strong bowlers in the group. The top three WHS students were Talib Prime, Darius Ngature and Joshua Nathan. Roxy5 finalists ‘En Passant Films’ and ‘Look Away’ are both WHS finalists in the Roxy5 film competition this year. Screenings will take place on Friday 31 July at the Mclaurin Theatre, Victoria University. The winner will be announced at the Red Carpet awards evening at the Roxy Cinema on Wednesday 5 August. We are waiting eagerly to to see whether The Work of An Artist (En Passant Films) or Hey Cassie (Look Away) will scoop a place. Pictured below are En Passant Films: Sam Quinn, Rory Maher, Nym Jones, Liv Calder, Sky Gobbi, Jack Whitehead, Namu Dahlberg and Ashton Gordon. Open Evening: Business Studies Logo quiz winners Many thanks to all those students and whānau who entered the Logo quiz competition that ran at our recent open evening. The answers were: Air NZ, Disney, The Warehouse, Starbucks, Wellington HS, Te Papa, The Heart Foundation, Wellington City Council and Netflix. The winners were Toby, Tama, and Oscar. Sports Boys 1st XI Football On 27 June, our boys 1st XI football team beat Newlands College 4-0, taking them to the top of their pool. This Saturday the team will play St Patrick’s second team. If the team win or draw they will go into play-offs on 18 July against either Onslow College or Wellington College for a place in the Youth Premier Reserve. Good luck team!

Parking for sensible cities: webinar 2
- Talk Wellington
- Equity, residents’ parking, behaviour change, and some myths busted – by popular demand, expert insights on parking plus some Wellington changemaking Following our much-viewed first webinar (check it out here), TUI Climate Community and Millions of Mothers with the Wellington Urbanerds are proud to have brought you transport and economics expert Stuart Donovan on everyone’s favourite topic! This one was a bit different: in addition to Stuart speaking on some particularly hot topics of parking, we heard about one area ripe for change. Check out the webinar video courtesy of Millions of Mothers:Parking: how we behave, fairness, and price Stuart’s presentation focussed on a few key aspects including the longer-run interesting questions like how people change our behaviour in response to parking prices, and the equity effects of pricing parking (inspired by questions from councillors concerned about the effects of the proposed new Parking Policy on poorer people). Stu’s slides are here [PDF 2.7 MB]Residents’ parking: what’s with that? Following Stu, we heard from Wellingtonian Oliver Bruce (of Urbanerds fame). He highlighted a particularly amazing feature of the current system: massive subsidies (underpricing) for residents’ parking. They’re skewing people’s choices in our transport system, in a generally bad way, but since the last webinar Oliver and Connect Wellington have a path forward… Oliver’s slides are here [611KB PDF]. So many questionsWhen it was time for questions, we summarised the areas of interest in the chat and Isabella fired the questions to Stuart and Oliver. There was lots of interest in equity, and the ethics of charging for access to publicly owned space. There was a hunger for case-studies of cities that had successfully communicated to their citizenry the good news that managing parking well is overall progressive (i.e. reduces inequality). The catch-22 of on-street vs off-street parking was a big topic, as people like residents’ associations and councillors react to the current (poorly managed) on-street parking, and feel resistant to good developments that don’t provide many carparks. There was also discussion of the opportunity cost of space, and the extent to which home buyers factor in transport options to their purchase price decisions (or assume they’ll get free street parking and grizzle once they’ve moved in with their car/s). (There’s also a good little discussion on Stuart’s Twitter feed, worth a look)Help Wellington do parking better There was a lot of interest from our audience in helping improve parking management in Wellington, reflecting its huge importance to our city’s transport system and its influence on affordable housing. It’s a complicated space and good comprehensive change will take years – see here for more. But the good news is that all kinds of contributions can make a difference. There’s something for everyone! And the process of change will take years, as observed We’re also keen to have more learning and discussion type initiatives, with more local voices and insight. If you’ve got suggestions for events, speakers, stunts or nifty schemes, or are just interested in finding out more about how you could help, drop us a line. Meantime, make sure you’re on the Urbanerds signup list so we can alert you to the next in-person gatherings and the next webinars! This month, we had an opportunity to share them with the general public via a Spinoff article – “How lock-down helped get Wellington’s rough sleepers off the streets”. We share an extract below, and encourage you to read the full article here. DCM’s director, Stephanie McIntyre, says that while it brought many challenges, the lockdown also expedited a number of long-term solutions to benefit their taumai – the phones, the 0800 number, the prepaid cards, and, most importantly, getting them into housing. "The vast majority of taumai in emergency housing are still there, and DCM kaimahi are working hard to transition them into permanent housing. “We can’t go backwards from here. We have seen what can happen when people are properly supported into good housing, and we have seen what happens when organisations pull together to innovate and make decisions rapidly. “We have always said that ‘together we can end homelessness’. These weeks, although terrible in many ways, have given us a valuable window to go hard and fast to end homelessness. Let’s work together to finish what we’ve started.” <!-- --> Re-connecting after lock-down This month we enjoyed a very special day on the DCM calendar. Our Matariki Seasonal Kai is the one time when DCM kaimahi (staff) and taumai sit down together – to enjoy a hangi at Te Wharewaka o Pōneke. Always a time to connect before the dark days of winter, to remind our taumai that we are there to support them and for them to commit to being there for one another – but this year it has been extra special. After a long period when we have not all been able to get together, or to sit close to one another, this was a very, very special day. Big thanks to the whānau of John Tristram who make this meal possible – what a brilliant way to celebrate the life of a man who had such a big heart for our taumai. <!-- --> Supporting DCM during lock-down We love the way so many of you come up with creative and committed ways to be part of our mahi – even during lock-down! During lock-down, we all realised the value of a good haircut! It had been four years since Dora last cut her hair, and she came up with a brilliant Givealittle campaign in support of our work. She had her hair cut for a wig-making charity this month, and forwarded the funds raised on to DCM. During lock-down, we worked with a young woman who was rough sleeping and very unwell. She needed a safe place to settle, but was very concerned for her dog, the one stable thing in her life. We got in touch with Waglands – with many of their usual clients having to cancel travel plans, they had space to take in the dog, and the young woman was able to settle in to emergency housing. Waglands regularly called her to chat about how her beloved pet was doing. The dog has now settled in to a longer term foster home, sorted by Ellie’s Canine Rescue. Another significant community has stepped up to the plate and committed to being part of the solution to homelessness. Last year we met with a local group of Freemasons from Westminster Lodge, who came to spend time with us at DCM and began supporting our work in generous and practical ways. During lock-down, these new and committed kaitautoko met with other lodges, sharing their enthusiasm and experience of supporting DCM. All 16 lodges in our area are now part of this initiative – and they are actively seeking more and more ways to be involved and to spread the word. He waka eke noa – we are all in the same waka, doing this together. <!-- --> Please help us get the message out there!
