We asked some of them to share a special moment from 2020. We check in with two of them here; have a look at our Facebook page to hear from more of our team. Natalia Natalia, leader of our Outreach team, on the beach with her dog Scout. Photo by Hayley Trenwith One highlight or special moment from 2020 For about a year, I chatted with a man in Te Hāpai who was rough sleeping in the bush, had been living that way for years and had no intention of changing that. For one reason or another, he decided that he no longer wanted to come in to the DCM building, but was still OK to talk to me on the street or in the bush where he lived. He was adamant that he didn't want to live any other way and would shut down any conversations about housing. I started to think that maybe he was one of the exceptional few that really, truly don't want to be housed. Then about a month ago, he came into DCM and asked to see me. It was the first time he'd stepped inside our building in almost two years. He came to ask me to help him find housing. That was one of the most significant moments for me this year and in fact, over my whole time at DCM. It showed me that persevering in building relationships with our taumai, even if that relationship building goes at a snail's pace, is a worthwhile investment. It also showed me, again, that we have to get this idea out of our head that people don't want to be housed. What are your hopes and dreams for our taumai and our mahi in 2021? Linked to my moment, I'd love to see DCM continue to be leaders in messaging to Wellingtonians and New Zealanders that the homeless people we see, and don't see, want, need and deserve permanent housing. That they want good things for their lives, they want to be settled, they want to thrive and be part of communities. I would also love to see our Wellington City Council outreach contract renewed. And for taumai, well, my hopes and dreams for them - other than every single one of them being offered permanent housing - I'd love to see people finding meaning and purpose, to realise they are worthy of good things, are accepted and loved. In 2021, we also want to support them to find communities where they feel safe and have opportunities to learn something new, share a skill or be an encourager or supporter for someone else's journey. Emily Emily, our lead Dental Assistant. One highlight or special moment from 2020 A highlight for me this year has been seeing the DCM dental service grow with several new dentists and dental assistants - meaning we can offer more taumai the care they need. It's a very uplifting experience for everyone involved. Taking away people's pain, transforming broken and decayed teeth, or cleaning away sometimes decades of calculus build up - it still warms my heart so much to be part of this service. What are your hopes and dreams for our taumai and our mahi in 2021? I have high hopes for DCM capitalising on the amazing mahi that was done this year. While this year's lock-down was very difficult for the country, it was inspiring to see the opportunities it created for taumai. It will be wonderful to see this progress continue. For the DCM dental service, I still dream of even more dental staff and volunteers so we can help as many taumai as regularly as possible. I hope the current government's election promise of increased dental benefits from $300 a year per person to $1000 will be fulfilled; this would be a huge positive for the oral and overall health of our taumai, and the continued improvement of the DCM dental service. Bronwyn Bronwyn (right) is Clinic Lead at Te Aro Health (TAHC). Te Aro Health is committed to providing high quality, low cost health care for vulnerable Wellingtonians. They have 1200 enrolled patients, and operate a satellite clinic at DCM. One highlight or special moment from 2020 I valued our collaboration with DCM, especially through lock-down. What we achieved together was huge - DCM supported us so we could get into taumai accommodation to do those important health checks, and flu vaccines ahead of winter. At a time when other health services were closed, we were out there, identifying people at risk and connecting with them. And we did it collectively. What are your hopes and dreams for 2021? In 2021 Te Aro Health is hoping to have more staff, especially another nurse practitioner to add to the value of our outreach clinics. We only have two prescribers who can complete medical certificates. We always want to do more, but we need more staff capacity. This is our goal for the year ahead. Henry Henry joined team DCM this year. One highlight or special moment from 2020 Housing an elderly couple into their first permanent home here in Wellington - both of them with varied health, mental, physical and personal challenges, including very strong views about not being housed. However after eventually getting them to view a potential unit, their whole demeanour changed, they were able to envision themselves living there for a very long time and eventually moved in. Another highlight was supporting a taumai with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), which comes with other social issues, to obtain permanent housing. He is immensely grateful and appreciative of his whare and very determined to not to do anything to lose it. All three of these people will begin 2021 settled in their own home. How special is that? What are your hopes and dreams for our taumai and our mahi in 2021? For our taumai to have a sense of belonging, worthiness, identity, purpose and belief… “The best is yet to come!” And as for our mahi - to continue with our goal of “working together to end homelessness”. As we go in to the new year, 2021, Wellington, let’s all commit to “doing whatever it takes!” Thinking about changing jobs in 2021? Would you like to join team DCM? 2020!!!
- Slow Boat Records
- Just wanted to offer a huge Slow Boat CHEERS to everyone who has supported us this year; it has certainly been one of the strangest I can recall – far and away the longest the ‘Boat has ever been docked in 35-odd years of trading!Hugely grateful to everyone who has bought music and more from us, who has been patient waiting on the arrival of stock that sometimes took an absolute age, and to those who came along and lent their support on the three Record Store Day ‘drops’, and for those unforgettable instore performances from The Muttonbirds (way back in February!), and The Beths in October – just quite phenomenal to have a shop full of people after all this year’s trials and tribulations and uncertainty. Our hearts go out to those overseas who may still be in some sort of lockdown – we are thinking of you, and we appreciate that we are in a very privileged position out here in our far flung corner of the world (and how quickly that can change). This years lessons often seemed to come down to one of our Prime Minister’s oft-stated maxims – kindness. It has been amazing to give and receive support to and from our customers and community at this strange time – especially our neighbours at San Fran and Rough Peel Records, as well as our suppliers, especially Southbound, Rhythmethod, Border Music and Universal Music NZ.We are thankful to be able to do this thing we love, and to share the gift that is music in our lives – it has certainly been a great comfort to us all here in these trying times…So, take care everybody – hope you all enjoy a safe and happy festive season – we will be here every day bar Xmas Day and New Years Day, so looking forward to seeing how you all redeem the many vouchers we have sold (it’s not too late, btw…)Keep scanning those QR codes, wash your hands, get tested if you are unwell – love, peace, kindness, and music!THE SLOW BOAT CREW XX

Surrey Street Steps

- FIND THESE STEPS – From 10 Surrey to 28 Worcester Street at the top. A very subtle entry way and you could easily miss this from Surrey. Follow along this path. The view from the top is spectacular. It’s December when I took these shots and some flowers along the way. At the top – beside St Thomas More church.

The role of vacant urban space in a Covid crisis
- Urban Dream Brokerage
-
Jan Bieringa, Sophie Jerram, Linda Lee and Jason Muir with 'Exquisite Kaitiaki' by Miriama Grace-Smith, Xoe Hall and Gina Kiel at Urban Dream Brokerage and Brokered Dreams book launch, 2/57, Wellington. Image: Ebony Lamb Wellington communities need more creative and public spaces as inner city population booms and housing crisis puts rental stress on the young and vulnerable Covid-19 and economic recession leaves empty shops and buildings empty in Wellington Urban Dream Brokerage programme will resume connecting artists with owners of unoccupied property Applications for artists to run projects are now open online www.urbanddreambrokerage.org.nz
Ariki Bloomwell presenting welcoming karakia. Image: Ebony Lamb As the residential property market escalates, and as increasing numbers move into city apartments, a need for inner city spaces for exchange and community is growing. With significant growth in commercial property left vacant since Covid-19 hit, the programme Urban Dream Brokerage is relaunching in Wellington to provide vital spaces for people to exchange, meet and help the city develop. Following its first run between 2012 and 2018 in response to the Global Financial Crisis, creative space programme Urban Dream Brokerage (UDB) has been relaunched funded by the Wellington City Council Tipu Toa: Build Back Better / City Recovery fund.
Image: Ebony Lamb The relaunch is spurred by a rise in unoccupied property around Wellington city due to the pandemic, and the need to create shared public spaces and experiences in a central city whose population is growing fast. The programme continues to run in Dunedin and has previously run in Porirua and Masterton. After the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake many buildings were taken off the Wellington market for strengthening, meaning fewer spaces could be used. Now property owners are embracing the renewed opportunity to enrich the city with artist and community occupied spaces. “We have a commitment to a city that feels good for the most vulnerable and gives space to the most generous. We see ourselves as intentionally curating projects that will provoke change, for example decarbonising and indigenising the city,” says UDB co-founder Sophie Jerram.
Victoria Singh from The Waiting Room Image: Ebony Lamb “Other cities across the world including Brussels and Barcelona are taxing buildings that are vacant for more than three months, providing incentives to keep buildings occupied, something that could work well when property is surging in value.” The aim of the brokerage is not just to help restore the city to pre-pandemic levels and types of activity, but to help create a new and better place where art acts as a bridge that welcomes all comers. UDB co-founder Mark Amery makes a case for culture providing a vital sense of place and meaning for city dwellers that leads to economic development. “A cultural recovery in Wellington is more than about attracting visitors through events. Culture is fundamental to our wellbeing and a sense of ownership of the city for those who live here. And we also invest financially where we feel a sense of belonging.”
Mark Amery and Helen Kirlew Smith. Image: Ebony Lamb A book of past projects Brokered Dreams: 98 Uses For Vacant Space has just been launched. “We also need to test new models of living space as we face environmental and social crises. Artists and community groups are leading the way,” says Amery.
Brokered Dreams: 98 Uses for Vacant Space. Image: Ebony Lamb Wellington City Council is supporting the brokerage to re-enliven the city in 2021 with activities, including support for the performance programme The City as a Theatre and a rejuvenated Cubadupa. UDB is produced by Maverick Creative, managed by dynamic Political Cutz performer Jason Muir with Linda Lee from Shared Lines Collaborative. Muir is already visiting property owners to find homes for projects. “UDB rules! My creative practice emerged from Urban Dream Brokerage so now I feel proud to manage the project and look forward to enabling others on their journey, to share their dreams with the people of Wellington,” says Muir. Urban Dream Brokerage was established in 2012 by Sophie Jerram and Mark Amery as part of their Letting Space entity under the umbrella of Wellington Independent Arts Trust. UDB found spaces around New Zealand for over 120 creative projects, some short and some long term with more than 40 property owners, allowing the artists’ work to infuse energy into the properties while new tenants were found. Some projects continue in the properties where they started - Come Sew With Me in Masterton’s Queen Elizabeth Park is celebrating this month its third anniversary, while others like Coliberate a ‘mental health gym’ are now successful innovative businesses. Brokered Dreams: 98 Uses for Vacant Space - the book is available at www.urbandreambrokerage.org.nz/book or at Unity Bookshop Wellington.
Evzen Novak, Thomas Lahood, Darcy Case Laurie Foon, Suzanne Tamaki and Gerry Paul during karakia. Ssendam Rawkustra
- Newtown Festival
- A multi-headed rhythm beast arising in 2007 out of the murky depths of the South Wellington mental health scene, 12 years, seven practice rooms, 1 album, and countless performances later (including 10 or more outings at the Newtown Fair), the Ssendam Rawkustra are still going strong and are as raw, cuz, as ever! The Rawkustra aim to mesmorise listeners with their musical oxymoron of organised percussionistic chaos, drawing on a plethora of influences from Maurice Ravel to the Doors, under the inspired direction of maestro Andreas Lepper, with spiritual oversight from the Assistant Vicar of Newtown, Reverend Richard Noble.

Finding Nemo
- Eye of the Fish
- Hi, I’m Nemo. Captain Nemo to you. I’ve written on this blog a couple of times before but the recent demise of Leviathan makes me think that we shouldn’t just let it all go to waste. I’ve been reading Eye of the Fish for years and am going to give it a try to keep it going, but under new management. It seems that Wellington really needs a good urban design blog. I was going to start up my own blog, but that is a hard thing to do: to get the footsteps of passers by and the eyeballs of the idle clickers. It seems that this blog may still have some readers returning here in the hope of finding Levi still afloat, but that seems a forlorn hope so far. So: finding Nemo it is instead.
