      • Ride Report – Nga Manu – 12 October Written by Neil Harwood – co Race Manager (along with Grace Saywell) Photos courtesy of Mark Freckleton A cool night saw numbers down but 13 keen athletes turned up and mother Nature surprised us with a nice night, if a little on the cool side. The Social Circuit took off at 6.10 to complete 8 laps at a comforatble pace. PeteGibbs and Ross Jackson were our ‘Team Social’ this week and these two joined by a number of riders from the other grades as they used this time to warm up. Both riders set a good pace and worked well together, with Ross taking a decisive lead over the last ‘hot lap’. We may see a few more join the Social Circuit next week, at least that’s what I hear... The other grades, D, C, B and A were set off next. Oh that’s right – there were no A Graders – I wonder if it was a bit too chilly for them?D Graders, young Liam Parkes, and Clive Brugh, set a nice steady pace over the 8 laps, with Tony Levaggi riding along for company. These guys were eventually caught around lap 4 by the solid C Grade contingent of 6 riders. Around this time also, Lee Pownall took a flier off the front, riding strongly, and keeping away for the remaining laps.     It was on the last of the 8 laps that B Grade duo, Gary Clareburt and Jonathan Neal, riding a tough two-up effort, caught the main bunch, with Dwight Garton finding the pace a little tough. But it was Lee who kept his head down and crossed the line first, about 8 seconds ahead of Gary, followed by Ricky Field from C Grade then Jonathan from B.       Results Across the line: Grade Placing Name Laps C 1 Lee Pownall 8 B 2 Gary Clareburt 8 C 3 Ricky Field 8 B 4 Johnathan Neal 8 C 5 Andy Ross 8 C 6 Janice Hill 8 C 7 Tristan Ratcliffe 8 D 8 Clive Brugh 8 C 9 Adrian McKenzie 8 D 10 Liam Parkes 8 D 11 Tony Levaggi 8 By Grade: Grade Placing Name Laps Social Circuit 1 Ross Jackson 8 Social Circuit 2 Peter Gibbs 8         D 1 Clive Brugh 8 D 2 Liam Parkes 8 D   Tony Levaggi 8 C 1 Ricky Field 8 C 2 Andy Ross 8 C 3 Janice Hill 8         B 1 Gary Clareburt 8 B 2 Jonathan Neal 8 B 3 Dwight Garton 8

    • Biking Mad Twilight Series Results #1
      • Paul Rawlinson - Manager for this event has written the following. His thoughts on Tuesday night. It's a great read! Thanks PR. It’s easy. No,really. It is. You take the speed of the slowest bunch, divide that by the distance and multiply it by the number of laps. Then you take the speed of the fastest bunch, take off their previous handicap, multiply by the number of laps and then subtract the difference. Before that (like, a couple of weeks before that) you make sure traffic management is going to be in  place. Really, that is the easy part. The tricky part is remembering to tell people how to get round the course The next tricky part is sending 23 people out on the course at different times. The other tricky bit is wrangling the last-minute-stand-in-marshall (thanks Grace!) ‘s dog And then counting the number of laps. For four different groups. Going at 7 different speeds. Another tricky bit is keeping the times And counting the laps And predicting the finish And recording the finish when the riders lack the consideration to parade across the line in the predicted order And taking photos And writing down numbers And giving out results And counting the laps. And remembering to thank Grace. And Dave. And Janice. And Gary. And the others. And Count The Laps!!! Really. It’s easy. Apart from counting the laps. That bit seems quite tricky. A warm, warm Kapiti Welcome  to a whole bunch of new comers. It was really great to see you there, and I hope you had some kind of fun. After a great course set up from Dave Downer and Gary (and probably other people too), and a smooth, seamless registration run by Janice and another helper,  in the shadow of an expressway underpass tactics were discussed, plans were made, instructions ignored and lines were toed. 8 D graders, with 4 new comers, and a late comer lined up. Late addition Alvirg looked too young, lean, and fast to be keeping that kind of company, and so it would prove. They set off with a hiss and a slight growl while C grade, full of burglars, trackies and other ne’er-do-wells champed at their bits. Science and caution were thrown to the wind, and in order to save too many tooth marks on their bits C grade were set off at a very generous 2min 30 sec later. B grade languished in the shadows while Katie calculated CoD’s, Peak Watts and threshold BPM’s. C grade passed for the start of their second lap (At this stage, due to the undemanding nature of getting to 2, lap counting was still pretty much on course) and B grade set off in their wake, with Katie hunting them down like a guided missile 30 seconds later. The early pace showed as D grade fragmented, but with sweating brow and rictus like grins, they battled gamely on while chaos played out around them. C Grade over took D grade, on Lap 3 for D, but lap 2 for B grade. B grade over took C grade on lap 2 for them, but 3 for C. Katie lapped D and C but never made it to B in spite of charging to within 10 seconds of them on lap 3 for B (4 for C, and 3 for some of D) Meanwhile the dog needed to chase rabbits. B grade played a mean game and pressed harder on the pedals than Katie, and even harder than C grade. But they still didn’t make it to the front of the race. Gary did, but it turned out he wasn’t at the front, he was half way in, but a lap ahead of some of D, half a lap down on C, and a few seconds ahead of James. And Euan. And Leon. But the bell had rung. Easy. C grade put on a very cool display of team riding, losing Adrian and Ryszard, but gaining Dave Downer in a calculated jump up the standings, position and chaos. John Rowlinson rode a very charitable ride and showed the ropes to Andrew Lowe, Clive and Frances looked shattered, Katie was broken, and Janice was first woman home. Grant Hagget showed a tracky’s guile and won the sprint for first place followed closely by Jonathan Neil and Tony Levaggi. Other people followed and the dog sat quietly by the trailer. Thank you all for turning up, riding hard and fair, and being enthusiastic, and light-hearted. Thanks as ever to the race committee, to the guys who set the course up and take it down, and Grace. Thank you to the guys at PEL for getting the Traffic management expedited in a decidedly un-bureaucratic time span!     See you next week! • Points Table for Race 4 - Final - Tineli Winter Series
      • The finale in the 2021 series (the first for 2 years - Covid dealt to 2020) was a windy affair, but at least it was dry - credit to Kapiti Coast winters for 4 fine Saturdays in a row (we won't talk about the first one!)  The strong westerly wind certainly made it interesting - lots of tactics required (and used!) and the bunches broke up in every grade.   The Club loved welcoming riders from other areas, from Wanganui to Wellington, Upper Hutt to Palmy, thanks so much for making the trip to ride with us.  We hope you enjoyed it and bring your friends next year!   Tineli were our major sponsors this year, and we'd like to give super thanks to Tim and his team, who enabled us to increase the prize money for $800 this year!  Super thanks to Ruth Pretty and her team for hosting us all each week for coffee and cakes, and for sponsoring Ruth's Rider of the Day each week.  Putting on events like these is, as most Club riders know, a massive team effort.  So, special thanks to ALL our crew!  We're a small Club and all volunteers - THANK YOU for giving up your time to help put on this show - you rock!  Just one example is our marvellous set up/pack down crew - who put out 2 full trailer loads of traffic management gear (including over 100 cones!) and start their day at 10am, ending about 4pm!   If you have any comments or suggestions for next year, we'd love to hear from you.   Congratulations to everyone who rode, competed, supported and helped in so many ways. • Winter Series Points table after Race 3 (7 August 2021)
      • Another cracker of a day in sunny Te Horo and the light breeze and dry roads made for great racing conditions for the 80 riders who took part, and competitive racing in all grades.  Ruth's Rider of the Day was awarded to Andy Hagan for his brave and successful solo break away to take out the A grade win - enjoy your coffees and cakes Andy! We trialled a new timing system, and verified the results with photo finish (so fancy - for a little club!) and results are available here https://www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=249800  We'd like some feedback from riders on the system - did you like it?  Here is the points table after race 3: A GRADE Race 3 Points balance Points Round 3  Total Points Name Place       Steve Bale 6 32 8 40 Katie Richards 2 18 17 35 Christopher Paul Harris 9 28 5 33 Peter Mora 10 32 4 36 Campbell Jamiesen  4 10  12 22 Jack Polley 7 13 7 20 Matthew Cryer 12 8 1 9 Matt Frecklington 13 10 1 11 Luke McDermott 14 6 1 7 Josh Courtis   21    21 David Finley   9    9 Daniel Shepherd 3  10 14 24 Rob Kilvington 5  8 10 18 Matt Shatland    6 6  6 Paul Rawlinson  18  1 1  2 Tony Gestro    1    1 Mark Hussey 8  1 6 7 Thomas Berry    1    1 Matthew Webber    1    1 Elliot Robertson    1    1 Callum Kennedy 11  1 1 2 David Weaver 14  1 1 2 Andy Hagan 1 0 20 20 Simon Barron 16 0 1 1 Brett Grieve 17 0 1 1 B GRADE  Race 3 Points balance Points Round 3 Total Points Name Place       Stephen O'Keefe 2  40 17 57 Paul Rawlinson    17    17 Mark Coburn 3  28 14 42 Oliver Ferry    12    12 Rhys Evans 8  15 6 21 Darren Murdie 15  9 1 10 Mike Dunne 11  19 1 20 Andrew Anson  13  6  1 7 Tim Mackey 24  6 1 7 Mike Craine    4    4 Alex Foden 14  8  1 9 Leon Goodwin 26  7 1 8 Johan Oelofse    1    1 Gary Clareburt    2    2 Richard Graham 12  9 1 10 Dwight garton    2    2 Rob Ryan 16  11  1 12 Carl Dickeson 17  2 1 3 Andrew Richardson  23  1  1 2 Euan Mason  25  1  1 2 Yoshi Shinoda 5  11 10 22 JOSHUA TURNBULL    1    1 Matthew Walker 18  2 1 3 Chris Sharot    17    17 Kristine Ford    1    1 Tim Lloyd    1    1 Nathan Cook 20  1 1 2 James de Hair 4  1 12 13 Toshi Yamauchi 19  1 1 2 Todd Hewlett 1 0 20 20 Chris Sharbou 5 0 10 10 Michael Leadbetter 7 0 7 7 Brendan Clarke 9 0 5 5 Duncan Appleton 10 0 4 4 Sid Cuff 21 0 1 1 Aaron Claason 22 0 1 1 C GRADE  Race 3 Points balance Points Round 3 Total Points Name Place       Ian Riddle 4  40 12 52 Janice Hill    30     John Valentine  M  14  5 19 Ian Gordon 11  13 1 14 Ian Cooke 5  15 10 20 Dave Chandler 10  12 4 16 Bruce Edgar 8  14 6 20 Chris McBride 2  20 17 37 John Pratt 20  6 1 7 Greg Overton  M  4  5 9 Tony Levaggi  19  1  1 2 Oscar Goodwin 6  18 8 26 Adrian Mckenzie  14  1  1 2 Alex Glenn 23  2 1 3 Kenzey Compton    1   1 Hugh Swartbooi    2   2 Wayne John Fage 13  2 1 3 Jo Neeson 6  12 8 20 Mike Harding 18  8 1 9 Steve Nagy    6   6 Millie Donald    1   1 Phil Cocker 20  6 (M) 1 7 Ian Fraser    1   1 Edward Gilbertson 1 0 20 20 Gary Clareburt 3 0 14 14 Hamish Forbes 9 `0 5 5 Georgie Clareburt 12 0 1 1 Tom Bland 15 0 1 1 Gavin Bush 16 0 1 1 Matthew Vince 17 0 1 1 Andrew Conochie 22 0 1 1 D GRADE  Race 2 Points balance Points Round 2 Total Points Name Place       Ian Fraser    20     Jo Neeson    17     Robert Scotcher 1  14 20 34 John Rowlinson 7  12 7 19 Serena Scotcher 3  10 14 24 Dave Downer 4  8 12 20 Reg Robinson    7     Darryn Cooke 2   17 17 Jamie Carey 5   10 10 Mark Neeson 6   8 8 Frances de Hair 8   6 6 Liz Gasson DNF   1 1 SOCIAL CIRCUIT  Race 2 Points balance Points Round 2 Total Points Name Place       Kassidy compton    20   20 Eve Rongo    17   17 Louise Kātene    14   14 Des Batten 1   20 20 Catherine Reid 2   17 17 Andrew Lowe 3   14 14 Euan Mason 4   12 12

    • Results from Tineli Winter Series Race 2 (31 July 2021)
      • Another bluebird day was delivered for the riders who came out today - who would have thought we'd be riding in short-sleeves on the 31st of July? It was great to see even bigger fields today, with truly competitive racing in all grades. Chapeau to those who rode up from Wellington, raced and rode home! Another good turnout by Manawatu & Wanganui riders too. Provisional results below - if you have any queries, please get in touch. Points table will be updated tomorrow. ** Next week we will be trialling a new timing system, so please allow a few extra minutes for registration. Even if you have pre-reigstered, pre-paid and have a race number, you need to check in please. Nrxt week we will also need to allocate you a timing chip, as this will replace the finishing chute. ** A GRADE Name Place Peter Mora 1 Josh Courtis 2 Christopher Paul Harris 3 Steve Bale 4 Daniel Shephard 5 David Finley 6 Rob Kilvington 7 Matt Shatland 8 Jack Polley 9 Katie Richards 10 Paul Rawlinson 11 Tony Gestro 12 Mark Hussey 13 Thomas Berry 14 Mathew Cryer 15 Mathew Webber 16 Luke McDermott 17 Elliot Robertson18 Callum Kennedy 19 David Weaver 20 Matt Frecklington Unconfirmed placing B GRADE Name Place Stephen O'Keefe 1 Chris Sharot 2 Mark Coburn 3 Mike Dunne 4 Yoshi Shinoda 5 Richard Graham 6 Alex Foden 7 Leon Goodwin 8 Rhys Evans 9 Rob Ryan 10 Darren Murdie 11 Kristine Ford 12 Tim Lloyd 13 Nathan Cook 14 Carl Dickeson 15 Matthew Walker 16 James de Hair 17 Gary Clareburt 18 Toshi Yamauchi 19 Tim Mackey 20 Dwight garton 21 C GRADE Name Place Ian Riddle 1 Oscar Goodwin 2 Chris McBride 3 Jo Neeson 4 Janice Hill 5 Mike Harding 6 Bruce Edgar 7 Steve Nagy 8 Ian Cooke 9 Dave Chandler 10 Millie Donald 11 Ian Gordon 12 Phil Cocker 13 John Pratt 14 Alex Glenn 15 Ian Fraser 16 Hugh Swartbooi 17 Wayne Fage 18 D GRADE Name Place Robert Scotcher 1 Daryn Cooke 2 Serena Scotcher 3 Dave Downer 4 Jamie Carey 5 Mark Neeson 6 John Rowlinson 7 Francis de Hair 8 Liz Gasson DNF SOCIAL CIRCUIT Name Place Des Batten 1 Catherine reid 2 Andrew Lowe 3 Euan Mason 4

    • Results from Tineli Winter Series Race 1 (24 July 2021)
      • Perfect fine and calm conditions greeted a good field of more than 60 riders.  A special welcome to those who drove a considerable distance, including from Wanganui, Palmerston North and Wellington.  Everyone is welcome to join us for coffee, cake and debrief at Ruth Pretty's afterwards (local tip: the ginger gems).  Unfortunately last weeks rain had created several pot-holes, but they were the only blemish on an otherwise bluebird day - we'll be asking the Council to fix them ASAP.  Big thanks to all our marshals and course set up/pack down team - you rock! Top three placings by grade below; the full points from Race 1 will be calculated and added shortly.  Ruth Pretty's Rider of the Day (voucher for coffee and cake for two) was awarded to Chris McBride in C grade for adding his spice to the race!   Race 2 will be held next Saturday 31st July, same place, same time!  Registration is open from 12-12.45pm. Big thanks to those who pre-registered and paid online. • KCC Time Trial Champions 2021
      • After postponing from the original date, the weather gods smiled on Te Horo this afternoon, keeping rain and wind (mostly!) away.  Three laps of this superb TT course later (with not a single cone-turn in sight!), and our champions have been found for 2021. Big thanks to the marshalls, course set-up and break-down crew, supporters and riders - you all rock!   It was great to see some TT and triathalon specialists make the trip from Wellington for our event - welcome!  And, super kudos to young Liam Parkes, who rode 3 laps (same as the adults) after competing in the Wellington secondary schools champs this morning! super star and worthy winner of Ruth's Rider of the Day. 2021 TT Club Championship Results (* denotes non-KCC member, and therefore not eligible for KCC championship medals) Juniors 1st - Junior Medal - Oscar Goodwin 33.52 2nd Euan Mason 33.53 3rd Liam Parkes 41.02 - Ruth's Rider of the Day Men 1st * Malcolm Cleland 27.05 2nd * Thomas Humphries 28.19 3rd - Championshio Trophy - Mike Proudfoot. 28.30 4th - Vets (60+) Medal - Gary Clareburt 28.40 5th * Ryan Tait 29.00 6th * Gene McNaught 29.10 7th Richard Graham 29.52 8th * Reagan Pitt 30.15 9th Adrian McKenzie 31.36 10th Kerry Graham 31.43 11th Steve Gregan 36.39 Women 1st - Championship Trophy - Katie Richards 26.59 2nd Di Borman 33.54 3rd Glynis TMK 43.02 4th - Vets (60+) Medal - Judith Taylor 37.56 Thank you to Ruth Pretty for again letting us take over her Garden Cafe for prizegiving.  This will be our "Club rooms" for the Tineli KCC Winter Series, starting 17th July.

    • KCC Road Race Champions 2021
      • What started as an idea for awarding some of the Club's old trophies blossomed into a great event yesterday - the first Kapiti road Race Champs to be held as a separate event in many a year!    Thirty-eight riders took to the Te Horo circuit yesterday to make for challenging racing in all grades.  It was fantastic to be back on this course as the Winter Series couldn't be held in 2020 due to Covid.  Sincere thanks to the army of helpers who put out (and picked up!) the Club's entire stock (90!!) of cones, emptied the trailer full of signage, marshalled in the chilly wind, helped with registration, ran the chute, and cheered on the riders!  Special thanks to Glynis and Adrian for managing the race so smoothly and professionally and to Gary for running the prizegiving.     All Road Race Results A Grade 1st Womens Trophy - Katie Richards 2nd Mens Trophy - Tom Gollins 3rd Chris Harris 4th Paul Rawlinson 5th Mike Proudfoot 6th Leon Goodwin B Grade 1st Grade Winner Medal - Rhys Evans 2nd Mike Dunne 3rd Graham Hall 4th Mark Colourn 5th Andrew Anson 6th Richard Graham 7th Veterans Medal (male) - Gary Clareburt 8th Rob Ryan 9th Darren Murdie 10th Nathan Cook DNF Lee Pownell C Grade 1st Grade Winner Medal - James de Hair  2nd Junior Medal - Euan Mason  3rd 1st Female Medal - Janice Hill 4th Wayne Fage 5th Tony Levaggi 6th Oscar Goodwin 7th Keri Graham 8th Mark Frickleton 9th Phil Cocker D Grade 1st Grade Winner Medal - Ian Fraser 2nd Rob Scotcher 3rd Ruth Pretty's Rider of the Day voucher - John Rollinson 4th James Carey 5th 1st Female Medal - Serena Scotcher 6th David Cunningham 7th Frances De Hair 8th Steve Gregan 9th Veterans Medal (female) - Judith Taylor 10th Liz Gasson DNF Michelle Turner

    • Southwards Circuit Series
      • Kapiti Cycling Club – Summer Circuit Events proudly sponsored by Howard & Co Tuesday 9th February 2021 at Southwards The hot sunny days experienced over the past week changed to a cloudy but still warm and breezy evening for last night’s event. First up was the Social Grade event, a non-competitive 20 minutes plus two lap jaunt around the safe, car free circuit. A slightly depleted field from previous weeks saw four riders taking to the start line. Two senior riders and two juniors set off accompanied by several followers using the event as a warmup for their main events. As the bell sounded for the last lap, 15-year-old Dylan Kennedy used his young legs to pip Steve Gregan to the line followed by Christine Stephenson. Finishing close behind was another junior Maggie Graham from the Cycling Graham family. Next event was the C and D Grade race over 25 minutes plus two laps. Thirteen riders over the two grades took to the start line with ages ranging from Under 15’s to over 70-year-old. Clearly illustrating the inclusiveness of cycling.  A neutral lap before the racing started was the prelude to an exciting battle within the two grades. C Grade proved to be a race for younger legs with junior Euan Mason taking out a hard-fought win from Kerry Graham (another member of the cycling Grahams, great to see) with 70+ year old John Rowlinson taking out third. C Grade Results: Euan Mason                   1st          15 Points Kerry Graham                2nd         12 Points John Rowlinson            3rd         10 Points Adrian McKenzie          4th         9 Points Fraser Beggs                   5th         8 Points Ryszard Balekju            6th         7 Points Dave Downer                 7th         6 Points Oscar Goodwin             8th         5 Points D Grade soon settled down to a contest between two long time riders, Doug Barrett and Darrell Flaws with Francis de Hair, David Cunningham and youngster Liam Parkes battling for the minor places. D Results: Doug Barrett                  1st          15 Points Darrell Flaws                  2nd         12 Points Francis de Hair              3rd         10 Points David Cunningham      4th         9 Points Liam Parkes                    5th         8 Points (1st Junior) A & B Grade Race: The evenings final event was the always hard-fought race within A and B Grades this evening was no exception.  With only two A Grade riders, the main race was going to be for line honours in B Grade. The pace settled down for a lap before Mike the missile Proudfoot took off, but his effort was all for nought as B Grade re-joined him. The pace was very high with a number of riders trying to break free. As the race entered the final minutes, Mike took off to gain a race winning move. Gary Clareburt appeared to have the B Grade win sown up as the race entered the last lap but a determined surge by Dwight Garten and James de Hair (a 15 year old junior-well done James) flew past Gary to take out first and second. Leon finished second A Grade. A Grade Results: Mike Proudfoot            1st          15 Points Leon Goodwin               2nd         12 Points B Grade Results: Dwight Garten               1st          15 Points James de Hair                2nd         12 Points Gary Clareburt               3rd         10 Points Jon Cox                            4th         9 Points Lee Pownall                    5th         8 Points Tristan Ratcliffe             6th         4 Points The points race is hotting up, remember everyone scores points. A major club trophy will be awarded to the rider gaining the highest number of points throughout the grades with individual grade winners receiving a trophy. Join the club and compete for a trophy. Next week is our last at Southwards before we move to Nga Manu for the remainder of the summer series. Big shout out to Di and Neil for assisting at registration, Dave Downer for setting up the course and taking down plus club members assisting.

    • Masters Games Wanganui - Final Day
      • Wow, another highly successful day for Kapiti CC super vets, John Pratt took out the gold medal in the 75-79 age group road race to complete a brace of gold at the NZ Masters Games. Is there any stopping him? Not to be outdone, our pocket rocket Di Bormann was narrowly outsprinted (by a past NZ Sprint Rep) after the pair broke away in the 55-59 year age group road race. Di finished the games with two silvers and a gold. Kapiti CC is very proud of them both.

    • Masters Games Wanganui

    • Southwards Circuit Series Tuesday 2 February 2021
      • Kapiti Cycling Club Summer Series proudly sponsored by Howard & Co Southwards Circuit Tuesday 2nd February 2021 Another stunning evening for the Southwards Circuit events, ideal weather with no wind set the tone for an exciting evening of cycling. The warm weather certainly brought out the numbers, great to see. First up event was the non-competitive Social Circuit over 20 minutes plus two laps. Six keen riders took to the start line, despite being “non-competitive” the six riders soon split up with Penny taking line honours closely followed by Christine with Junior Liam as always showing great spirit to take third. Great to see noticeably young Sam Cunningham riding with his Dad, a future Kapiti rider. Penny Mikkelsen Christine Stephenson Liam Parkes Alex Arthur Pete Gibbs Dean Arthur Next up was the C & D Grade Race over 25 minutes plus two laps. Seventeen riders over the two grades took to the start line, a quite different race ensued from last week. A strong C Grade group, comprising Cookie, John Pratt, Junior Euan Mason and initially John Rawlinson set a fast pace as they cleared the rest of the field. What was now a trio lapping the remainder of the field. The race within a race in D Grade proved equally competitive. The final sprint for the C Grade line resulted in Cookie taking the win from a fast-finishing Euan with Adrian taking third. Ryszard Balegto took out the win in D Grade from Doug Barrett and Darren Flaws. C Grade Results: Ian Cook                          1st          15 Points Euan Mason                   2nd         12 Points           1st Junior Adrian McKenzie          3rd         10 Points John Pratt                       4th         8 Points John Rawlinson             5th         7 Points Dave Downer                 6th         6 Points Dean Arthur                   7th         5 Points Alex Bissel                       6th         4 Points Oscar Goodwin             7th         3 Points Dave Cunningham       8th         2 Points D Grade Results: Ryszard Balegto            1ST         15 Points Doug Barrett                  2nd         12 Points Darren Flaws                  3rd         10 Points Lian Parkes                     4th         8 Points Alex Arthur                     5th        7 Points Francis de Hair              6th        6 Points Steve Gregan                 7th        5 Points The final race of the evening, A and B never fails to entertain, the race over 30 minutes plus two laps saw ten riders taking to the start, five A and five B Grade. The battle soon got underway with four A Grade breaking away very quickly, Mike, Tom, Katie and Paul set a fast and furious pace with Mike, Katie and Tom sharing the driving on the front with Paul dropping away from the trio. Meanwhile, B Grade were trying desperately to close the gap without much success, the A Grade trio lapping them for the first time midway through the race. Leon then Lee tried to break free from the chasing bunch as the flying trio lapped them for a second time. • Howard & Co Southwards Summer Series
      • Howard & Co proudly sponsors the Kapiti Cycling Club – Summer Series – Southwards Tuesday 26th January 2021 After the rain cancellation of last weeks event, this week’s weather proved to be ideal racing conditions. A “slight” breeze helped keep the warm conditions exactly right for the event. Although numbers were slightly down due to many people still enjoying their summer break, the racing proved to be as competitive as ever. First up was the combined C and D grades over 25 minutes plus two laps. The seven starters soon settled down into two groups with the C Grade riders testing each other out as the race progressed. Junior rider Euan Mason was an early aggressor in trying to break clear. The final sprint in C Grade saw evergreen John Pratt taking out a convincing win with Adrian and John R close behind. Junior Euan finished in 4th. D Grade largely kept together until the final couple of laps with Francis taking the win from Steve and Doug. C Grade: John Pratt                       1st                        15 points Adrian McKenzie          2nd                       12 Points John Rowlinson            3rd                        10 points Euan Mason                   4th                        8 Points D Grade: Francis de Hair              1st                        15 points Steve Gregan                 2nd                       12 Points Doug Barrett                  3rd                        10 Points Next up was the 30 minutes plus two laps A and B Grade. The six starters very soon settled down into a fast aggressive pace. Mike (The Missile) Proudfoot quickly asserted his authority over the group by riding away to a race winning position. Great viewing for the spectators. Back in the bunch the pace was relentless in trying to claw back on Mike’s lead. The final sprint for A grade was as predictable, Mike taking the convincing win with Leon taking second in the Grade. B Grade saw Lee taking a clear win from fast chasing Gary followed by Junior rider James then Tony. A Grade: Mike Proudfoot            1st                        15 Points Leon Goodwin               2nd                       12 Points B Grade: Lee Pownell                    1st                        15 Points Gary Clareburt              2nd                       12 Points James de Hair                3rd                       10 Points Tony Levaggi                  4th                        8 Points As noted above, we have introduced season long positional points competition, the rider in each grade amassing the highest total will be awarded a grade trophy.  Be in to win. A special thanks to Dianna for her continued support at registration, also to Gary and Mike for course set and the riders assisting in the course takedown. Always appreciated. Next event Tuesday 2nd February. The Club looks forward to seeing you on the start line.

    • Southwards Event Series - End of Year Event
      • Kapiti Cycling Club - Southwards Summer Circuit Series 15th December 2020 The final event of 2020 turned out to be stunner, ideal cycling conditions with a festive theme and a big turnout enabled for a successful evening. First event was the 20 minutes plus two laps Social Circuit, the event for the first time this season was dominated by five youngsters (Under 15) all vying for glory. This changed the balance somewhat for the event with the social circuit riders taking a back seat against the young guns. We will introduce a separate event for the youngsters in the new year. With two novice riders on the start line, Dylan Kennedy (on a borrowed bike and sand shoes) and Maggie Graham (Richards daughter) the five juniors largely stayed together with the four more senior riders until the final laps when Euan once again proved his strength taking the honours from Dylan. Peter, Christine, and Judith rode strongly to finish close behind. Euan Mason                   1st Dylan Kennedy              2nd Alex Arthur                     3rd Liam Parkes                    4th Peter Gibbs                    5th Christine Stephenson 6th Maggie Graham            7th Judith Taylor                  8th Penny Mickleson          DNF Euan was voted to be the best dressed Christmas Themed rider – great effort Euan The next event was the C/D Grade with twelve riders taking to the start line including Dave Downer (recovering from his serious accident-great to see you back Dave). The twenty-five minute plus two lap race proved once again to be a fast and aggressive race. Tony set a high pace and soon distanced himself from the peloton, chasing hard, John, Dave, Euan, and Gill worked tirelessly to close the ever increasing gap but to no avail. Tony took out a decisive win (B Grade for you Tony next year) C Grade: Tony Levaggi                  1st John Rowlinson            2nd Euan Mason                   3rd Dave Downer                 4th Gill Donald                      5th Adrian McKenzie          6th D Grade: Rysz Balejko                   1st Doug Barrett                  2nd Howard Duff                  3rd Francis de Hair              4th Dylan Kennedy              5th Liam Parkes                    6th Adrian was awarded the best Christmas Themed rider in C/D Grade – well done Adrian The final event of the evening was the battle for honours in A/B Grade over a 30 minute plus two lap race. With a large field of fifteen riders, it was odds on for a battle royale which did not disappoint. The pace kicked off immediately with Miles blasting at the front closely followed by Katie. The lead chopped and changed mainly between three riders, Katie, Miles and newcomer Tom Gollins (welcome Tom) which eventually saw the elastic break from the rest. The intrepid trio built up a commanding lead slowly gaining a lap on the peloton which also contained some strong riders desperately trying to reduce the trio’s advantage. Miles, Katie and Tom caught the peloton over the closing laps. As the final lap bell was rung Tom and Katie created a short break over Miles who chased desperately to close the gap. Tom took out the win from Katie with Miles crossing the line for third. A very exciting race. A Grade: Tom Gollins                    1st Katie Richards               2nd Miles Davies                   3rd B Grade: Dwight Garton               1s Sam Bentham                2nd Rhys Evans                      3rd Peloton: Gary Clareburt James De Hair Peter Butler Rob Scott Richard Graham Leon Goodwin Lee Pownall Ian Cooke         @2 laps Paul Rawlinson DNF A highly successful evenings racing under ideal weather conditions and strong fields in all grades. • Southwards Circuit Series Tuesday 1st Dec
      • Kapiti Cycling Club -Southwards Circuit Series – Tuesday 1st December 2020 Despite the early winds the first event of the summer (1st Dec) the weather proved kind for the event. Unfortunately, due to a very last-minute notification, we were required to amend the course which actually proved to present an entertaining circuit for both riders and spectators alike. First event was the Social Circuit over twenty minutes plus two laps, a slight change was introduced that reflected the changed course, the final five minutes was open to riders wishing to ride harder and sprint for the glory. The entertaining event started with five riders, three young guns, first timer Abbie Watson (welcome Abbie) and Pete Gibbs rounded out the select field. After the fifteen minutes the event sparked into life with Liam, Alex, and Euan vying for line honours. Abbie and Pete maintained a watching brief over the unfolding dash for the line. Young Liam took out the win closely followed by Euan and Alex. Pete and Abbie followed close behind. It was heartening to see the four young riders fronting up to the events, well done, we look forward to you all becoming regulars. The next event was the combined C and D grades with seven starters taking to the line for the twenty-five minutes plus two lap race. The pace soon increased as firstly Adrian then Howard Duff and John Rowlinson set the pace. Liam Parkes decided to compete in this event also. Biding his time was another youngster, thirteen-year-old Oscar Goodwin who then came to the fore as the race developed. A hectic sprint ensued over the final two laps with Oscar taking a very well-deserved win with John R close behind followed by Adrian. Oscar Goodwin             1st John Rowlinson Adrian McKenzie Howard Duff Glynis Te-Maipi Kemp Ryzard Balesjko Howard Davies Liam Parkes The final event of the evening was the combined A and B race over 30 minutes plus two laps. Eleven riders took to the start line for the fast and furious encounter ahead. The pace soon settled into an aggressive format with five riders taking turns to keep the pace high, Katie, Richard, Neil, Peter Butler (welcome Peter) and Jon Cox steadily distancing themselves from the field. Leon who was distanced midway fought gamely back to re- join the leaders and contest the overall. A setback occurred close to the end when Richard clipped a pedal on a corner resulting in a very untimely puncture. The whistle blew for the final two laps followed by the bell for the final lap for the expected sprint to the line. Katie opened a gap but determined first timer, Peter Butler caught Katie on the line with only inches separated him from the win. Katie Richards                1st Peter Butler Neil Harwood Jon Cox Leon Goodwin Gary Clareburt Dwight Garton Ian Cooke                       DNF (Migraine attack) Richard Graham            Puncture Lee Pownall                    DNF Tony Levaggi                  DNF Due to time constraints, we are obliged to run combined grades, from next week, prizes will be awarded to each grade winner. I.e. within C/D grade a prize will be awarded to the winner of both C and D. Same A/B. Special thanks to Dianna for an excellent job with registration, Doug for the set up and the club members that assisted with the take down.

    • North Island Race Series- Race Five
      • North Island Cycle Race Series – Race 5 – Sunday 29th November 2020 The final race in the five-race series did not disappoint in the quality of the racing despite the cold and very wet conditions. The 85 km course from Henley Lake, Masterton to a turn around at the foot of Dryers Rock then out towards Bidiford before a hectic sprint on the outskirts of Masterton. The 2020 format for the series significantly changed the dynamic of the racing, previously a solely masters series, the change to allow open grades made racing hard with 50-60 plus age masters against much younger riders. Not exactly a level playing field.  Despite this change Kapiti has performed well in the series playing a role in ensuring that the racing was hard and exciting. Race five proved to be a successful finale for Team Kapiti, with only three riders fronting up in the rain, Richard Graham (competed in all five races) Miles Davies and Sam Fisher the trio ensured that they played an important part in keeping the pace fast. The peloton largely stayed intact until the closing kilometres when the increased pace saw the stronger sprinters coming to the fore. Prominent in the final was Miles vying strongly for the win, the awfully close finish saw Miles taking an excellent fourth, closely followed by Sam in 11th with Richard completing the Kapiti trio in 19th providing an excellent finish to the series. Well done Miles, Sam, and Richard. Also, thanks to Howard for his service support throughout the series.

    • Southwards Circuit Series Tuesday 24th Nov
      • Kapiti Cycling Club Southwards Circuit Series – Tuesday 24th November 2020 The evening weather proved to be ideal for the start of the Southwards Circuit events. The popular and safe circuit on closed roads within the Car Museum grounds always provides exciting racing, Tuesday evening did not disappoint. The first event, the Social Circuit over 20 minutes plus two laps was well attended with a mix of youngsters and not so young youngsters. The steady pace for the 20 minutes kept the group alert whilst enjoying this new experience at Southwards. The final two laps resulted in Liam taking out the sprint. The combined C/D Grade over 25 minutes plus 2 laps were a hotly contested affair, Ewan Mason and Alex Bissell eventually lapped the field with a strong display. An incredibly determined Ewan sprinted for a very impressive win over Alex. Young Alex Arthur rode a determined race to take out rider of the event award. Ewan Mason    1st Alex Bissell John Rawlinson Doug Barrett Howard Davies Adrian McKenzie Justin Fraser Dean Arthur Alex Arthur (Rider of the Event) The final event of the evening, the combined A/B race over 30 minutes plus 2 laps lived up to its status, the eight starters soon settled into a fast pace led by Katie and Miles. A break soon developed with Katie, Miles and Gary pulling away from the remainder. The pace was hectic as Katie and Miles determined to out do each other. Eventually lapping the field, the trio never let up as Miles and Katie entered the final laps with Miles storming away to take a well deserved win over a very competitive Katie. Excellent race. Miles Davies 1st Katie Richards Gary Clareburt Dwight Garten Lee Pownall Ben Powell Andy Ross Special thanks to: Doug (Course set up etc) James (Registration) and Dwight for helping with take down. See you all next week at Southwards for a 6pm start, registration from 5.30pm onwards

    • Fantastic result for Katie Richards at the Criterium National Championships
      • Katie Richards took on the cream of NZ's elite riders at the Vantage Criterium National Championships in Christchurch on the weekend.  These are NZ's best current elite riders, who are all around 20 years younger than Katie. And, there were three riders in the elite women's grade with rainbow armbands denoting world champion success. This video starts at 2:19, which is the start of the elite women...  It's well worth watching her whole race.    Totally Phenomenal (with a capital P) Katie!
