Riders Brave 130k Winds
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- Mountainbikers braved cold southerly conditions at Makara Peak today - including an Aucklander! Claude Dabaliz flew down specially for the event, as he did for the MTBO Series opener three weeks ago. Karori was not as bad as elsewhere in the region, and planners Andrew McLellan and John Randal shortened the courses at the last minute to stay off the tops.

MTBO Series Begins
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- The southerly front that brought snow to the Tararua and Rimutaka Ranges fortunately went through in the night leaving a cold but clear day for the start of this year's MTBO series. Andrew McLellan and Hilary Miller took the lead in the open classes, but younger riders also enjoyed Magnus Bengtsson's riverbank courses.

Good Muster for Maunganui
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- A good field of rogainers headed into the mist-shrouded Akatarawa Forest on Sunday, starting in the Maungakotukutuku Valley. Gordon Balfour had set 47 control points right up to the 700-m Maunganui, second-highest point in the Aka's and as far out as the Rock Garden/Devils Staircase.

Bikers Orienteer the Riverbank
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- Though rain discouraged attendance, OHV's first MTBO beginner event explored the tracks on the riverbank between Melling and Kennedy-Good bridges. Hard to believe this was out first promo in 8 years, and lots of you said you had friends or family that would be interested.

Avalon Antics
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- A lovely summer evening for orienteering. It was wonderful to see lots of Avalon School families coming along to try out orienteering.

Three Take Drink Control
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- Runners were faced with a dilemma at tonight's O-Max. One of the "any 4 out of 7" controls was waist-deep in the surf! Although very close to a compulsory control only three took the dip.

Pirates in Belmont Regional Park
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- Congratulations to Pirates Gingerbeard and Captain Jack Sparrow (Alias Greg and Ross) who managed to outscore an outstanding solo effort by Bill Edwards with the help of the bonus ‘treasure’ items. (Be it that their feather was slightly suspect – It was the ‘fur’ parrot that was perched on Gregs shoulder)

Gale Whips Up Entries
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- Would you believe another record entry - and after a day of gale force winds! In fact the winds died down right on cue as participants were set off four by four on Tony van Dyk's course at Silverstream Retreat. Constrained by the need to cross under a busy road, the course was nevertheless similar to last week - a two-loop micr-o on the Hutt riverbank followed by common third loop through the buildings (ancient and modern) of the retreat. This offered significant route choice so it wasn't just follow the leader, even for those groups which were closely matched.

Clever Courses on Mt Vic
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- John Randal and Lara Shepherd made the most of cleverly set courses and fine weather to win the open classes on Mt Vic today. Matt Farrar rode nearly 20min faster than any other vet man, Dave King being the best of the rest. Tom Bradshaw had some junior competition for a change. And Peter Snell put in a surprise appearance.

Westenra, Cross Regain Rogaine
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- Jill Westenra and Al Cross won back the 6hr City Safari urban rogaine title today, ahead of Bill Edwards and Tim Wilson. Amazingly John Robertson and 12-year-old Tim beat 90 other teams in the 3hr category. 370 participants enjoyed winds up to 100kph which prevented the ferry from putting in at Seatoun.

Rogaine Runs from Lambton Quay
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- A really bizarre feeling starting last night's rogaine in downtown Wellington beside the pubbers, and battling the traffic lights on the outward legs. But of course Tinakori Hill and Ngaio Gorge are only minutes away. The event run out of the Norsewear shop on Lambton Quay by adventure racing "Team Norsewear" was won by Bill Edwards in spite of a fading headlamp.

Wellington MTBO Series - {Makara} Peak
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- Brilliant weather in other parts of Wellington today was replaced by mist on the top of {Makara} Peak, and a bit of a breeze buffeted riders on exposed tracks such as Ridgeline. However it was great in the bush and afterwards on the grass as the scores were totted up. Stephen Betts judged things nicely with slightly too many controls for MP Supporters president John Randal to visit - he scored 470 out of a possible 540.

Rescue and Revenge at Reikorangi
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- Soon after arriving back from yesterday's Guy Fawkes rogaine, police SAR expert Jo Holden was coordinating a rescue mission! A pair couldn't find a very difficult ridge track in the bushclad Tararua ranges, but had got a cellphone message out after backtracking to high point Pukeatua.

Prospects with one event to go
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- After the OY at Waitarere two titles are already in OHV hands: Tim Robertson (M12) and Ian Basire (M60). But in M21A Bill Edwards (who didn't score thru controller duties) is poised to pass WOC's Magnus Bengtsson in the final; though he has to watch behind for Ross Morrison (HB) and Bryn Davies (RK).

OHV Perfect in Canterbury
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- While other members were busy at the OY at Waitarere or taking on the rogaining world in the Australian outback, Gavin Scott and Nic Gorman showed that OHV can't be beaten, while competing in PAPO's Canterbury Champs. The only two club members taking part in a double-header weekend, Gavin (M60A) and Nic (M21AS) came away with 4 grade wins from 4 starts.

Rogainers Undeterred by Storm
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- With a southerly storm battering the region and houses collapsing in Lower Hutt, it was amazing that anyone turned out to the rogaine tonight! But 40 took on the steep bush tracks surrounding Wainuiomata and lived to tell the tale...

Wellington Winter Afterwork Rogaine Series - Brooklyn/Aro St
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- There were 73 participants, and all controls got at least one visit. Perhaps too many visits from the point of view of the tramps, who apparently had to move from their seat in Central Park at Control 30 for rogainers to inspect the plaque.

Wellington Summer Afterwork Rogaine Series Results
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- After a bad weather start the weather improved for a while then got steadily windier. The 52 competitors reported a cryptic course with a couple of misplaced controls. Many competitors completed the diving pool control (adjacent to the start at Keith Spry Swimming Pool) but suggested that with fine weather it could have been an excellent control.

Akatarawa Attack
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- 80 mountainbikers attacked the Akatarawas on Saturday, armed only with a map. And 78 emerged more or less unscathed, close to the 4 or 8 hours each team had chosen for their battle with the rugged bush area between Upper Hutt and Kapiti. The final team of 2 pulled into the base at the end of Bulls Run Road three and a half hours late - battered but unbowed.

Yet Another Record!!
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- Wow, OHV continues to generate more participation. With the final planned event the O-Max event at Stratton Street, a quick trawl through the results on the web shows 2286 participations for 2005. That's 27% up on 2004, which was up by a quarter over 2003 (which was up by an eighth over 2002:-))

Terawhiti Rogaine
- Wellington Orienteering Association
- Big climbs and big distances mean the course proved to be challenging, probably too big for a 6 hour event ? taking more than a day to set out the whole course on my quad bike was a bit of a clue, 43% of teams incurring time penalties proved it.
