Shuttles will run only if it’s dry (Jono doesn’t want muddy bums all over the inside of his van) between 11am and 1pm from the top of Starfish, dropping off at the summit. We'll have sausages at the summit during that period. WORD and The Capital Kiwi Project are coming to celebrate too. Every day is a great day to show your love for the park by tapping to donate under the digital screen at the bike wash area.

    • Rollercoast refresh!
      • With a big thumbs up to Trails Wellington for funding, Jimmy and Dan from Total Trail Solutions are completing a bit of a refresh underway on the rollercoaster jumps. There’s some great great work on the lower half of Rollercoaster, sorting out drainage big time and bringing back some pizazz (technical term) to some of the features. The rain over this past week will help settle the dirt. PLEASE respect the current trail closure (very obvious signs and fencing) and stay off the fresh work. We will advise when it’s open for business! The top jumps are still open and down a bit further until you see the cones and orange fencing. We’ll let you know when the jumps are open. Brooklyn Trail Builders’ Rob Lee got to test out the enhanced features last week and was overheard saying: “they’re Bewdy as!”

    • WellingtonNZ loves trail builders too
      • Another week, another site talking about how great the trails are. This week it’s the WellingtonNZ website with a focus on the trail building communities all over the wider Wellington region. The article talks with Rob Lee of Brooklyn Trail Builders. “Being neighbours with Zealandia has brought Waimapihi a lot of attention. Saddleback/tieke are nesting in their trees and giant wētā, extinct from mainland New Zealand for 100 years, are back wandering the undergrowth. “Our mantra is trails, trees, and traps,” says Rob. Since they started, BTB has planted over 30,000 native trees. Dig days and planting efforts always end with a feed in the bush. They’ll fire up a barbecue and crack open a beer from a local brewery. Being so close to the city centre means Waimapihi has become a local favourite. Rob says they get around 150,000 riders, trail runners, and walkers every year. With connecting tracks all the way to the south coast, the links between the city and the wild are seamless.

    • Congratulations to Kiera Vlaar
      • Congratulations to club member Kiera Vlaar for her 1st place (U17 Women) and 2nd place (Overall Women) at round 1 of the MTBNZ National DH Series. Dunedin’s Signal Hill has some really fun trails, and the primary DH track has a nice mixture of fast open sections, rock, and long off-camber descents. In my experience it almost always rains on race day. This year didn’t disappoint, with videos from the event showing the off-camber being a great place to spectate. Congratulations also to Iley Nunns (5th overall women) and Capella Martin (2nd U17 Women and 6th Overall Women).

Last week he posted a story about Wellington being the best capital city in the world for mountain biking, and this morning another story extolling the virtues of Mākara Peak. It’s great to see some international recognition of the amazing network that our community has built all over the region.
