What’s going on at Te Motu Kairangi?
- Wellington Scoop
- Ian Cassels’ Wellington Company and Taranaki Whānui need to throw a much clearer light on their development plans for the Miramar Peninsula/Te Motu Kairangi, as reported in a front-page DomPost article, beyond PR puffery. At present, the waters are decidedly murky.

A park? Or houses? Or both?
- Wellington Scoop
- A regional park above Shelly Bay on the Miramar Peninsula? Or houses? Or is there room for both? A DomPost report today says that hundreds of new homes could be fast tracked on the Peninsula. Michael Daly writes that iwi Taranaki Whānui and developer Ian Cassels are applying for consent to build 600 to 700 houses on 8 hectares of the former Mt Crawford Prison which closed in 2012.

Rethinking the airport barrier
- Wellington Scoop
- Despite being surrounded by high hills, Wellington is fortunate to have an international airport that is under 10km from its CBD, with flight approaches over Cook Strait to the south and just missing the Newland hills to the north. The drawback is the runway which forms a major physical barrier over 2km long between the city and the airport terminal and the growing population of over 20,000 residents who live east of the airport on Miramar Peninsula.

Building a road and saving 30 seconds
- Wellington Scoop
- One of the most extraordinary things about plans to bulldoze a road through the pristine Takapu Valley is the claim about how much time will be saved. They’re counting the savings in seconds. The claim is found in an Appendix to the controversial report in which the chief executives of regional councils tell their mayors that they ought to support a road through the valley.

Flyovers and the Wellywood sign
- Wellington Scoop
- One word was missing from the Transport Agency’s announcement that next month it will finally tell the public about its plans for changing State Highway One around the Basin Reserve. The word which the Agency chose not to use: flyover.

Wellywood: good idea, dreadful idea
- Wellington Scoop
- It’s a great idea to put a Hollywood-style sign on the Miramar peninsula. But it’s a dreadful idea for the sign to use the cliched “Wellywood” word, which does nothing except show that we are hankering after older and bigger film industries rather than having confidence in our own identity and our own name.
