If we’re so cool, why are Manners Street businesses so unhappy?
- Wellington Scoop
- Banners telling us that we are the “coolest little capital in the world” are on display throughout the CBD. But if we’re so cool, then why are Manners Street retailers so unhappy?

Willis Street complete? Not, actually
- Wellington Scoop
- "Willis Street complete" is one of the headlines in the Wellington City Council’s effusive display advertisement in the DomPost today. But the headline isn’t accurate. Only part of the job has been completed. Though it’s true that “the paving is complete” on this part of the new bus route, the council doesn’t mention that another stage of the project is yet to begin – on Thursday, linesmen will start the complicated task of rearranging the network of overhead wires for trolley buses.

The misery of Manners Street, and Willis Street, and Taranaki Street
- Wellington Scoop
- There were lots of men at work in the disintegrating Manners Mall this afternoon. But after Matt Calman’s exposé in the DomPost, I didn’t see any of them asleep on the job. I did notice, however, that some of the workers were saving the bricks which had been ripped up from the pedestrian mall – perhaps they’ll be used again when councilors next change their minds about Manners Street.

The new Manners Street: speed is needed if you want to object
- Wellington Scoop
- The Wellington City Council has issued a densely-packed document of 27 pages which describes changes to traffic flows and parking which are to be made in preparation for Manners Street becoming two bus lanes. The council invites everyone to study the 27 pages and send “submissions”. But this isn’t a consultation process. The council is seeking only “objections” and the “objection period” closes at the end of next week.

Manners Street: the council is running a misleading and one-sided campaign
- Wellington Scoop
- The Wellington City Council’s advertising about the future of the Manners Mall is misleading and biased. There are different opinions about its controversial plan to wipe out the pedestrian mall in Manners Street. But the council is promoting only one of them, as if its point of view is the only one which can be considered by anyone who accepts the invitation to “have your say”.

The arguments which have been ignored - against reopening Manners St to traffic
- Wellington Scoop
- The battle to save the Manners Mall took place over three days in February. But less than four months later it was lost - when city councillors voted at a meeting this week to reopen the street to buses.
