Town Hall meeting at Enjoy
- Wellington Scoop
- For a few hours on Saturday, the Enjoy contemporary artspace in Cuba Street’s Left Bank felt like the venue of a town hall meeting. People gathered to discuss and celebrate the recent publication of Ko Te Reo ō Ngā Tāngata / The People’s Voice, a citizens’ newspaper with creative writing, columns, stories, photography, artwork, and even crosswords. Many of the contributors, almost all tenants of City Housing, were present, as were public art advocates Mark Amery and David Cook, and Enjoy hosts Claire Harris and Sam Kirk.

Back to the (museum) future
- Wellington Scoop
- Confused? Te Papa is short of money, with a deficit reported as being $8m. Yet the government is investigating the idea of creating a second national museum in Wellington. The DomPost reports this morning that a feasibility study accepted by Cabinet in July has resulted in a business case being prepared for a National War Memorial Museum that could be open by 2020 in the old Dominion Museum building that’s now controlled by Massey University.

It’s wonderful
- Wellington Scoop
- Shaking, spinning, rotating and swaying. The City Gallery’s new Kaleidoscope exhibition of Len Lye’s kinetic sculptures is unmissably exciting. In fact, all four of the Gallery’s new exhibitions are fascinating. They’re also complementary. Which is some consolation for all the visitors to Te Papa who’ve been puzzled by the national museum’s inexplicable and unforgivable decision to close its entire art space for two months.

Te Papa versus the city council
- Wellington Scoop
- While almost everyone else is encouraging the Wellington City Council to cut its spending in order to control the rates, one national organisation is campaigning in the opposite direction. Te Papa is annoyed by the council’s decision to reduce its annual grant from $2.25m to $1m. It has responded by launching a campaign which threatens that Wellington “could miss out” if the grant is reduced.
