Basin flyover: another week of opposition
- Wellington Scoop
- It’s hard to find anyone who likes the NZ Transport Agency’s plans for a 380-metre-long flyover alongside the Basin Reserve. Starting at the Mt Victoria Tunnel, the structure would carry two lanes of vehicles above Ellice Street and Kent and Cambridge Terraces and discharge them at the Tory Street traffic lights. The flyover would be a dismal eyesore across the cityscape.

Basin flyover: the mayor opposes it, but what about the councillors?
- Wellington Scoop
- As Mayor Celia Wade-Brown continues her opposition to the Basin Reserve flyover, it’s sad that so few Wellington city councillors are showing similar concern. It’s equally lamentable that councillors aren’t protesting at the lack of democracy in the the planning process.

Basin flyover: how the Transport Agency wants to make home-owners pay
- Wellington Scoop
- Not only is the Transport Agency planning to demolish around 50 homes, but they’re going to the Environment Court to force local residents to pay for sound-proofing on all other houses up to 100 meters from the new roads.

Basin flyover: it’s official – there’ll be noise and visual problems
- Wellington Scoop
- The NZ Transport Agency has confirmed that its flyover alongside the Basin Reserve will result in “visual and noise effects.” The coy words are from the Agency’s Wellington highways manager. But he’s concerned only with minimising these problems for the cricket ground. There’s no concern that the same problems will affect the wider community.

Vote no for both flyover options
- Wellington Scoop
- One week of the eight-week consultation period is already over – leaving less than seven weeks to tell the Transport Agency what we think of their flyovers and their other roading plans. The best suggestion so far has come from Maximus on Eye of the Fish, who recommends that everyone sends a submission saying: I vote for neither of the two options presented. I demand to see a full and fair evaluation of all the other schemes that you have had for the last 2-3 years.

A flyover at the Basin Reserve? The battle begins on Saturday
- Wellington Scoop
- Saturday is the day when the government’s Transport Agency will tell Wellington how it intends to change the cityscape at the southern end of Kent and Cambridge Terraces. The news has been a long time in coming, but as long ago as 2008 then-mayor Kerry Prendergast said, with approval, that a flyover near the Basin Reserve would be part of the plan. Her successor doesn’t support a flyover. Indeed, the concept has few supporters except for the planners and engineers at the Transport Agency. And though there have been several good alternative proposals, the Agency doesn’t seem willing to consider them.

Flyovers and the Wellywood sign
- Wellington Scoop
- One word was missing from the Transport Agency’s announcement that next month it will finally tell the public about its plans for changing State Highway One around the Basin Reserve. The word which the Agency chose not to use: flyover.

Reminder: a flyover isn’t the only option for changes at the Basin Reserve
- Wellington Scoop
- At a meeting in Hataitai last April, a distressed Kapiti woman warned about the tactics that could be expected from the NZ Transport Agency. Her forecast has proved to be correct.

Basin Reserve traffic problems – the mayor’s solution doesn’t require a flyover
- Wellington Scoop
- Some expensive ideas about Basin Reserve traffic flow are being worked on by the New Zealand Transport Agency, the city council and the regional council. I disagree with a flyover or any large increase in capacity. However, we could improve north/south bus flow without expensive and intrusive infrastructure.

Everyone’s happy about putting SH1 into a trench – so, more please
- Wellington Scoop
- The weekend report that State Highway One will be moved into a covered trench under the new park in front of the National War Memorial seems to have pleased everyone. Mayor Prendergast says it’s the best solution and “a superior outcome.” The principal of the nearby Mt Cook School is “absolutely thrilled.” The Mt Cook Mobilised group is “very happy.”

Roads more important than heritage buildings, Transport Agency tells us

- The New Zealand Transport Authority has been astounding in its arrogance in a submission to the Wellington City Council about the heritage rules for residential property in the inner city neighbourhoods.
