Wednesday will be a day of celebration at Unity Books in Willis Street, marking the end of months of renovations. Bigger! Brighter! Even better! The new Unity Books has a wider, more welcoming facade, a lot more window space to entice pedestrians to stop, and a lot more space for browsing and buying.
Reports this weekend have confirmed that the money troubles faced by the owners of the Whitcoulls and Borders bookstores are likely to leave empty retail spaces not only in Lambton Quay. The future could also be uncertain for Wellington’s other big Whitcoulls stores, in the Readings complex in Courtenay Place, at the airport, and in Queensgate, as well as others throughout New Zealand.
