Mayors and motorways
- Wellington Scoop
- If you drive north past Mackays Crossing on SH1, you get a reminder of the current roadbuilding overkill – you see that a four lane motorway is being built alongside the existing four-lane motorway.

Building a road and saving 30 seconds
- Wellington Scoop
- One of the most extraordinary things about plans to bulldoze a road through the pristine Takapu Valley is the claim about how much time will be saved. They’re counting the savings in seconds. The claim is found in an Appendix to the controversial report in which the chief executives of regional councils tell their mayors that they ought to support a road through the valley.

The public have their say, but …
- Wellington Scoop
- On the same day that the government announced plans for record spending on roads, we learnt that 408 people had felt strongly enough to send submissions to the Transport Agency opposing its plans to build a four-lane expressway from Mackays Crossing to Peka Peka. (Surprisingly, 302 people thought the expressway would be a good idea.)

First the trains, then the buses?
- Wellington Scoop
- Stranded in Waikanae? TransMetro was replacing trains with buses between Porirua and Waikanae this weekend, because of continuing work on the Kapiti line. But today they announced that the buses may also be stopped “due to the extreme weather.”

Frustrated, angry, bullied: Kapiti residents say new expressway will trash the district
- Wellington Scoop
- The strength of grass-roots opposition to an expressway through Kapiti is shown in this week’s announcement that residents are planning to march on parliament. The “frustrated and angry” residents aim to target Transport Minister Stephen Joyce, whose Transport Agency is preparing to build the new motorway.

Losing their homes and their dreams, to make way for four lanes of speeding traffic
- Wellington Scoop
- You can’t help feeling sorry for the 15 (or more) Raumati South families who’ve discovered that their houses will be demolished to make way for the southern entrance to the new Kapiti expressway.

Dividing Kapiti in two: “it’s madness”
- Wellington Scoop
- This is part of the new $500million expressway which Kapiti Coast residents are concerned will slice through the heart of their district, dividing east from west. The four-lane expressway is being planned by the New Zealand Transport Authority, but the image – showing four lanes cutting through a residential area of Paraparaumu Beach – wasn’t seen till campaigners obtained it by using the Official Information Act.
