    • Save the Basin and Save Kapiti are organising a “Rail Against the Road/Expressway” rally at Parliament on Wednesday July 6th. While most of us in the Centre might not have strong opinions one way or the other on the proposed Kapiti ‘Sandhills’ scheme (?), the issue is nevertheless an important one for a number of reasons. First of all, being played out here is the age-old conflict between nationally identified objectives against local community interests (or destruction thereof). This, of course, has much resonance with our members.

    • The big expressway project around the coast of Wellington took another step today with the major local council “buying in.” Kapiti Coast District Council today adopted a set of objectives for membership of the Sandhills Expressway Alliance that is being established by NZTA.

    • UnitedFuture leader and Ohariu MP Peter Dunne is hailing the decision to proceed with Transmission Gully as a great Christmas present for Wellington. The long-time Transmission Gully campaigner says that while he never really doubted it would get the go-ahead – “It’s always been the only real viable option” – he is relieved the decision has been confirmed.

• • Route announced for Wellington Northern Corridor

    • The NZ Transport Agency Board has announced key decisions on the route for the Wellington Northern Corridor, marking a major milestone in the strategic development of this section of State Highway 1. The corridor, identified by Government earlier this year as one of seven roads of national significance, will be developed as a four lane expressway from Levin to Wellington Airport. The corridor will be built in sections with the overall route substantially completed within the next ten years. Today’s announcement includes the decision to progress Transmission Gully rather than the Coastal Highway Upgrade as part of the Wellington Northern Corridor.
