- October is here - and to get into the mood for Halloween and our Spooky Disco we're kicking off October with a Spooky Screening of Cult Classic - "Carnival of Souls (1962)" - Thursday October 3rd - Free Entry - Starts at 7:30pm Bar & Restaurant (Smoked & Pickled) will be open from 3pm for pre-show and during-show kai --- A young woman (Candace Hilligoss) in a small Kansas town survives a drag race accident, then agrees to take a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she is haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Made by industrial filmmakers on a small budget, the eerily effective B-movie classic Carnival of Souls was intended to have “the look of a Bergman and the feel of a Cocteau”—and, with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score, it succeeds. Herk Harvey’s macabre masterpiece gained a cult following on late-night television and continues to inspire filmmakers today --- See you there

BNU 1sts v Waterside Karori - 1st June 2013

- Karori Park #2, 12. After promising results in recent weeks, we were looking to complete a trifecta of wins against the top 3 teams. 1st place Karori would pose a different threat, difficult to break down and dangerous at set pieces. BNU started the stronger side, quickly settling into our rhythm, knocking the ball around confidently and dominating midfield. There were appeals for a BNU goal after the ball may have crossed the line, a mass of bodies made it difficult for the ref to see and had to wave play on. After 20 minutes of dominance, we fell off the pace a little, inviting Karori back into the game. Karori were awarded a free kick after 27 minutes. They threw a number of players forward and made it count with a strong headed finish to go 1-nil up with their only clear cut chance of the half. We didn't panic and kept at Karori. Paul Clune squeezed home from a tight angle, to equalise seconds before the break. 1-1 at half time.

- After overwhelmingly positive feedback and a heck of a good time, in 2023, Te Aro Eats: Uniting Kai Communities is back for its second year at CubaDupa! Te Aro Eats is a collaborative and interactive dining experience where you are invited to connect with fellow diners, volunteer in the meal mahi, and take time to enjoy the delicious kai that has been created to show what is possible when we mahi together. Brought to life by the volunteers and staff at Seeds to Feeds, Everybody Eats, The Free Store, Wellington Timebank, Kaibosh Food Rescue, and with the support of Kaicycle, BGI (Wellington Boys and Girls Institute), Neighbours Aotearoa, Commonsense Organics and Wellington City Council. Saturday: 12 pm - 2 pm | 4 pm - 6 pm Sunday: 12 pm - 2 pm Each session open to all This meal is designed to showcase how our community-focused organisations operate and welcome volunteers. Masters Registrations open for 2020

- <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Masters football registration is now open! Inviting existing and new masters players to join the fastest growing area of Island Bay United! Costs are $285 per player for the season, and we have 5 confirmed teams, ranging from Masters 2 to Masters 5. Each team has a minimum squad of 16 players, although most will carry a few more to allow for injuries and player unavailability. Many existing players are local fathers of our junior members or long time friends of the club. Teams also range from competitive to social, but all teams have a great culture and want to go out and have some fun on the pitch on a Saturday afternoon. New players are welcome as we are trying to build a new team this year, so feel free to contact our Masters Coordinator Rod Lawson. You may have played in the past, have been wanting to give football a go or just wanting to get back into doing something active on the weekends. Let us know a little about yourself and what you are wanting out of Masters football when you contact Rod. Sill not sure, come down for one of the social training runs on a Wednesday night or Sunday morning to have a kick and make a call from there! if you are a returning player, please register online at MyComet and you will be allocated to your team separately.

Another season, another reason for making coffee

- How hard can it be to make a really good cup of coffee? The correct answer, as any Wellingtonian knows, is “Really bloody hard!” A good barista is a thing to be cherished, and the best of the best come together every year for the Huhtamaki New Zealand Barista Championship to show off their skills and find one winner to stand tall for Kiwi coffee culture at the World Barista Championship in Vienna. Thanks to the championship organisers, we got to spend some time hanging out with one of this year’s competitors, Richard Legg from Coffee Supreme. Back in 2009, Richard was spending his gap year making coffee in his home town of Feilding when the Supreme account rep for the cafe where he worked encouraged him to enter the championship. He came first in the Wellington region heat and sixth overall. Now, after a couple of years at university, realising halfway through his degree that he was going to go back to making coffee as soon as he graduated and so there was really no reason not to cut to the chase, he’s saddling up for another go. The Wellingtonista’s videographer-in-residence, Tom A., and I listened intently as he told us how it’s done: You can find Richard at Coffee Supreme on Hopper Street Monday–Friday until 12.30, and the Huhtamaki New Zealand Barista Championship is being held at the Michael Fowler Centre from 23–25 March: heats on Friday and Saturday, with finals and semi-finals on Sunday. Spectators are welcome and entry is free.

View this email in your browser Help your club stage the ultimate Secondary School Champs! Kia ora <> Orienteering Wellington is hosting this year’s NZ Secondary Schools Championships, from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 July and we need your help to make it an awesome experience for all! Duties will be for a maximum of two hours, likely less, and volunteers run free (subject to the Controller’s approval) at Sprint and Long events. We need everyone’s help, and especially those who hold current first aid certificates or can act as medics. Volunteer roles at events Friday 19 July: Sprint, Kāpiti College/Marine Gardens 11:30 - 4:30pm Event centre setup, car-parking, registration, first aid, on-call medic, Starts, road-crossing marshals, on course marshaling (x2), computer, control collection and pack-up. Porirua City Council update Nathan explained that the District Plan has been approved, and PCC is now taking feedback and submissions on it; it will go into action in early 2021. PCC is about to start running workshops on the Long Term Plan. A workshop is being held tomorrow with NZTA regarding the plans for revocation of SH1 and SH58 post-Transmission Gully. Matters arising Iain, Kate and Nikky met to discuss the Village Planning survey. Kate has since talked to PCC about whether they will pay for design, advertising and printing. The hope is to get the survey circulated soon, and to organise a drop-in session one Saturday at St Mark’s. The intention is to present the results at this year’s AGM. Financial $0.14 interest has been received this month. Correspondence No correspondence has been received. Progress on action items Action: Bill/Jon to discuss options for cloud storage. The Committee confirmed a strong preference to use a free public service, rather than a paid service. Food forest/community garden and He Ara Pukerua The Muri Station platform building and panels will be formally opened by the Mayor on Saturday 5 September at a launch commencing at 10.30am, followed up with tours around the food forest, where entertainment and refreshments will be available. Paul has asked PCC if the trees around the platform can be trimmed in advance of the event. Action: Jon to create a page on the RA website. Penguin survey Pauline Morum forwarded an email from Glenda Robb at the Kapiti Coast Biodiversity Project. A survey will be carried out in late September with a penguin dog, to track the local little blue penguins. Glenda has offered to do a brief talk at the September Committee meeting. Action: Paul to respond to Glenda and invite her to talk at the Committee meeting on 8 September.Action: Jon/Nikky to promote meeting/talk online.Action: Iain to look for name of DOC contact person re the installation of new signage about keeping dogs on a lead at the beach. Waste Free PKB Waste Free PKB’s collections have been extended to include metal beer bottle caps and wine bottle tops, metal jar lids, metal and plastic drink bottle tops, milk bottle caps, bread tags, can tabs, eyeglasses, facial skincare product packaging (plastic and glass containers plus lids, droppers and other complex closures), and writing instruments (including pens, felt tip pens, highlighters, markers, mechanical pencils and correction fluid – but not wooden pencils and chalk). This is in addition to the collections that have been in place since January 2019, which includes oral health products (toothbrushes, clean and empty toothpaste tubes and dental floss containers), AA and AAA batteries, and a number of different brands of coffee capsules. Action: Bill to investigate possibility of recycling computer equipment. AGM The AGM needs to be held in October, probably after the October committee meeting (scheduled for 13 October). It was suggested that Glenda Robb be asked to present the results of the penguin survey. Action: Paul to investigate a suitable date for using the School and Community Hall. Other business NZTA are keen to further extend Ara Harakeke; the next stage is from Pukerua Beach Road along SH1. A surveyor will be considering a possible route so as to avoid the slope and zigzag. Informed (about) Consents
- The Wellingtonista
- It’s a common complaint: “how could the Council let people build that, and not even notify anyone?” That’s partly down to a misunderstanding of what “notification” means under the RMA: it’s not just about letting people know, but also the start of a long and complex process involving hearings, lawyers and possible appeals, and it only occurs when a proposal goes some way beyond what’s permitted under the District Plan. Most resource consents aren’t notified in that sense, but they are public information, so theoretically everyone should be able to know about it. In practice, though, it’s not that easy. Lists of recently received or issued consents are published on the WCC website every fortnight, but you have to remember to look, download a PDF, and scan through to see if anything might affect you. To make that easier, I’ve been doing some work with local company Thundermaps to gather this information, map it, and let you receive alerts when something pops up. I’ve written a full description on their blog, but all you have to do is: sign up (it’s free); draw the area that you’re interested in; and receive email alerts or smartphone notifications whenever the Council publishes information about a new consent in that area. If you don’t want the notification service, you can just go and browse the map to see what’s happening across Wellington. At the moment, we’re just gathering public information about WCC consents, and this is only updated every fortnight, but we hope to get other Councils on board to make it easier for everyone to keep in the loop about developments in their community. Trusting everybody is well and good as we (finally!) head into the cooler months – I mean, you really can’t complain TOO much when it’s blimmin’ JUNE and the weather hasn’t been too savage, right?! Anyhow – plenty to be getting on with here at t’Boat – we were surprised and chuffed to get a shoutout from Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon at his recent show, for an Andre Segovia CD set he bought off us last time he visited Wellington in 2008, and we are also looking forward to forthcoming shows from Nadia Reid, Aldous Harding, Warpaint (!!!) and Lloyd Cole… You may also wish to spend some quality time with exceptional new releases from the aforementioned Aldous Harding -her glorious third album, “Designer” is a cracker, along with Mavis Staples‘ excellent Ben Harper-written/ produced set “We Get By”, Sharon Van Etten‘s lovely “Remind Me Tomorrow”, the return of Vampire Weekend with the hefty “Father Of The Bride”, or Big Thief‘s mysterious and lovely “UFOF”… we are also packing a fresh batch of stylin’ Slow Boat tees in some new colours and a range of sizes – a charcoal coloured one, and a reddish-marle are my picks of the litter… We also have tonnes of new posters to brighten up the walls of your pad, DVDs and box sets to hunker down with, a heap of nice priced new vinyl from the good folks at Universal Music NZ, and if you were wanting a special order from the US, say – an order going early next week… do feel free to drop us a line and enquire about anything you fancy. Northern Men Take Premier 2 Championship For Second Year

- <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Photo by Lewis Bishop The Northern Men’s team have completed a double, winning their Premier 2 grade for the second year running. In a repeat of last years’ final, they met a strong Tawa Titans team, who were looking to complete their commanding season and push for promotion to the top tier competition. Northern’s ‘Honey Badgers’ had met Tawa five times already this season. During regular-season games, they had come out worse off, but in both the two previous finals matches - in the grading round final and the first semifinal, Northern had held the Titans to a draw, before besting them in penalty shoot-outs. It was after that penalty shoot-out win in the semi-finals that Northern went straight through to the grand final, while Tawa had to fight Hutt United in a second semi. The Northern boys, however, had a free weekend after their friendly match was cancelled. Northern went into the match looking like the underdogs, but went 1-nil up early after a mis-timed strike from player-coach Nathan Croad found the back of the net. The Titans had to wait until the second half to reply, taking the score to 1-1, and looking like the teams would be going to shoot-out for a third time. However, a goal from youngster and Capital rep, Samuel Bishop, put the ball away to bring the Badgers back into the lead. While Tawa’s attack was fierce, and keeper Sam French was called upon to make several saves throughout the game, as the clock counted down, the match felt firmly within Northern control. The Northern team continued to push for the entire 70 minutes, with midfielder Olly Wright chasing down a ball hit out of the Northern defensive 25, to take it into the Tawa circle. While Northern wasn’t able to capitalise off Wright’s attack, 2-1 was how the match ended, with the Northern United boys claiming the championship for the second year running.

Waiting for light rail? Let’s build a busway now!

- One question on the mind of everyone suffering from Wellington’s transport problems is – when will Let’s Get Wellington Moving actually get us moving? Guest poster Marko Garlick sees a supercharger hiding in plain sight There seem to be lots of abstract projects planned to be delivered, maybe years from now: urban State Highway 1 “improvement” with more tunnels, and a rapid (or maybe just frequent) mass transit line from Lambton through Newtown and to the Airport. But where will these actually go? And how do we deal with difficult questions about flows around the Basin Reserve? Wellingtonians waiting for new transport infrastructure to be built… Where does mass transit go? For mass transit, there are many things to consider. Is it along the waterfront quays or along Lambton Quay / the Golden Mile? Along Taranaki St or along Cambridge Terrace? Where does it go through the Basin Reserve? Many people are speculating. And the big one: light rail or trackless trams, or both? Mock-up of a route down Taranaki St What about the urban motorway? The LGWM proposal has a pretty good plan to maintain the amenity of the city above. They want to underground the motorway from the Terrace to Mt Vic. A new Te Aro park will be created on top. However people are questioning the need for more lanes created by a new Terrace and a new general traffic Mt Vic tunnel. More lanes in urban motorways creates induced demand. More lanes means make people drive more which kills off any travel savings created by the bigger road. It’s a transport strategy just as smart as trying to lose weight by buying bigger pants! Bigger roads take up valuable space and just fill up with more traffic (looking at you Auckland, thanks for showing us what not to do) This uncertainty is paralysing! Those who are in the “pro-car” camp say they like mass-transit but that must come after their bigger road. Those in the “pro-PT” camp want light rail first and a smaller road. Finger-pointing and party lines are drawn. Tough and costly decisions will have to be made about irreversible projects around the Basin. Once you make a flyover, tunnel or lay down tracks you can’t (quickly) go back. I think we can break out of this inaction and stupor with an interim middle ground: a busway. Case Study: Auckland’s Northern busway The idea for this has come from the success of Auckland’s northern busway. It is a dedicated two-lanes for buses from the northern foot of the Harbour Bridge up SH1 to Constellation Drive with world-class stations and frequent congestion-free services into the city. It has seen year-on-year double-digit growth numbers over its 11 years in service, and is being extended to Albany and beyond shortly. Eventually tracks will be laid down for a second-harbour crossing for light-rail. Radical incrementalism Initially the busway was just a narrow shoulder each side of the northern motorway. People were sceptical initially but its success was undeniable and has provided the basis for upgrades and extensions. What the Northern busway shows is that doing something now, and building on it, is more practical and politically palatable than trying to justify a massive spend up front. This is applicable to Wellington’s light rail situation. It is relatively low-cost initially, can display almost mass-transit qualities and is more flexible as progress is made towards light-rail. Why a busway? A busway is what Wellington needs now. We cannot wait another 10-15 years for a big decision on the Basin and Mt Vic tunnel. A busway will provide many benefits: It is far cheaper to implement right away and far quicker to implement (I envisage 3 years for the first stage).It also demonstrates demand for mass-transit and will allow us to see whether a certain route is a good idea or not.It also allows for land-use intensification now, providing greater density and amenity to a future light rail line. What will it look like? So what would this look like? I think that the busway should start at the train station, go along the waterfront quays, and then either go along Taranaki St or Cambridge/Kent Terrace. Ideally, it should run in the centre of street with weather protected stops and room for cycleway and signal-priority. Stops should mirror light rail ones, being spaced out for speed and reliability. Along most of the route the buses could probably hit 60km/h speeds, congestion free, all day. [Ed: just let that sink in. Congestion free. A clear run.] Separate branding would be an excellent addition. The Northern Express (NEX) is what Auckland has; the Wellington Express (WEX) is what we could have. This post is about incrementalism and the key takeaway is something half-done is better than waiting ages for the ‘perfect’ solution. If the busway is barebones at first before getting upgrades then so be it. The mess at the Basin can be avoided by stopping bus priority at the start, then resuming it into Newtown. This is what the Northern Busway does with dedicated lanes ending at the Harbour Bridge, then resuming on Fanshawe St. What the waterfront quays look like now (shudders). Hardly the “walkable city”. A thing of beauty: What a complete Wellington busway could look like The busway can be upgraded over time. Greenspace, cycleways, better stops, a possible underpass on Waterloo Quay to connect to the railway station. Summing up In an ideal world, we can all agree on the light-rail and grade-separation issues at the Basin and they may already have been implemented. But that is not the case. Although there is lots of details to work, the principle of a busway now then future conversion to higher-capacity light-rail is a sound one in my mind. 2020 Port Nicholson Regatta – You Were Here!

- What a sensational Port Nicholson Regatta! With over 170 Sailors and 30 boats on the water, including over half a dozen visiting boats with 4 Sports Boats from Auckland, RPNYC delivered an event members can be proud of! The Port Nicholson Regatta opened with the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race on Thursday, followed by a convivial Regatta Dinner and presentations to Britannia Sea Scouts, Wellington Free Ambulance, and Live Ocean. It provided opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic support from our sponsors who help make things better and easier: Yamaha, Crombie Lockwood, Lawson’s Dry Hills, Mt Gay, Steinlager, North Sails, Burnsco, Pivotal Print, Barton Marine, Havana, Mevo, Chaffers Marina, and Whittaker’s. The event delivered three days of intensive and rewarding regatta racing in perfect weather. Impeccable race management led by John and Linda Parrish, was ably supported by our support crews and assistants. Notably Marg McVeagh, Janine Small, Julie Bate, Carole Inkster, Phil Taylor, Mel Zytecka and Ashley Owers who were out on the water for the duration of the event. Not forgetting Kim McMorran of course, for our brand new marks. After the relentless start sequence to get 44 races away in 4 divisions over three days (plus the 8 starts in the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race), there was silverware to award. Does TPPA redux protect Big Tech?

- SumOfUs/Creative Commons Prof Jane Kelsey, in her critique of the still-secret Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership (formerly the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement [TPPA]) notes in The Spinoff: The most crucial area of the TPPA that has not received enough attention is the novel chapter on electronic commerce—basically, a set of rules that will cement the oligopoly of Big Tech for the indefinite future, allowing them to hold data offshore subject to the privacy and security laws of the country hosting the server, or not to disclose source codes, preventing effective scrutiny of anti-competitive or discriminatory practices. Other rules say offshore service providers don’t need to have a presence inside the country, thus undermining tax, consumer protection and labour laws, and governments can’t require locally established firms to use local content or services. If this new government is as digitally illiterate as the previous one, then we are in some serious trouble. I’m all for free trade but not at the expense of my own country’s interests, or at the expense of real competition, and the Green Party’s position (I assume in part operating out of caution due to the opaqueness of the negotiations) is understandable. Protecting a partly corrupt oligopoly is dangerous territory in a century that will rely more heavily on digital commerce. While there may be some valid IP reasons to protect source code, these need to be revealed in legal proceedings if it came to that—and one hopes there are provisions for dispute settlement that can lift the veil. But we don’t really know just how revised those dispute settlement procedures are. Let’s hope that Labour’s earlier stated position on this will hold. Google has already found itself in trouble for anticompetitive and discriminatory practices in Europe, and if observations over the last decade count for anything, it’s that they’ll stop at nothing to try it on. Are we giving them a free ride now? Despite Prof Kelsey’s concerns, I can accept that parties need not have a presence within a nation or be compelled to use local content or services. But the level of tax avoidance exhibited by Google, Facebook, Apple et al is staggering, and one hopes that our new government won’t bend over quite as easily. (While I realize the US isn’t part of this agreement, remember that big firms have subsidiaries in signatory countries through which they operate, and earlier trade agreements have shown just how they have taken on governments.) She claims that the technology minister, the Hon Clare Curran, has no information on the ecommerce chapter’s analysis—and if she doesn’t have it, then what are we signing up to? However, Labour’s inability to be transparent—something they criticized the previous government on—is a weak point after a generally favourable start to 2018. The Leader of the Opposition is right to call the government out on this when his comment was sought: basically, they were tough on us when we were in government, so we hope they’ll live up to their own standards. Right now, it doesn’t look like it. I suspect Kelsey is now the National Party fan’s best friend after being vilified for years. Bit like when Nicky Hager (whom one very respected MP in the last Labour government called a right-wing conspiracy theorist) wrote Seeds of Distrust. And the solutions that Kelsey proposes are so simple and elegant that it’s daft they weren’t followed, since they are consistent with the Labour brand. I know, trade agreements can stay confidential at this stage and this isn’t unprecedented. But that’s not what Labour said it wanted. At least these suggestions would have shown some consistency with Labour’s previous positions, and given some assurance that it’s in charge. What should a Labour-led government have done differently? First, it should have commissioned the revised independent economic assessment and health impact analyses it called for in opposition. Second, it should have shown a political backbone, like the Canadian government that also inherited the deal. Canada played hardball and successful demanded side-letters to alter its obligations relating to investment and auto-parts. Not great, but something. New Zealand should have demanded similar side-letters excluding it from ISDS as a pre-requisite for continued participation. Third, it should have sought the suspension of the UPOV 1991 obligation, which has serious Treaty implications, and engaged with Māori to strengthen the Treaty of Waitangi exception, as the Waitangi Tribunal advised. Fourth, it should have withdrawn its agreement to the secrecy pact. I once joked that National and Labour were basically the same, plus or minus 10 per cent. On days like this, I wonder if I was right.

Hataitai Past 2021 Calendar

What a journey it has been! The process of creating the calendar started in March during Covid-19 Lockdown - not that we were bored! The idea came about as we felt that fundraising events were not going to happen for quite some time. Quotes and samples from national printers were sourced, then onto the mammoth task of selecting photographs by committee approval. So many great photos to choose from. We spent hours pouring over wonderful pieces of our community’s history. What a business! We decided that our very own local Smith Print was the best designer and printer to use for the job. What an amazing product they’ve delivered for us. The Wellington Libraries Recollect collection, and the Alexander Turnbull Library had wonderful photographs available - some at a small fee. Their librarians were very helpful. As was Russell Jenkins of the Wellington Tramway Museum. What a wonderful Tram photograph they sourced for our cover page.. As Hataitai has a unique heritage, we have ensured that photos were included of the old Patent Slip, the Tram Tunnel and the Flying Boat, as well as a variety of others. You may not have known that there was a commercial Flying Boat service operating in Evans Bay from 1938 to 1954, where passengers boarded a small passenger terminal near Hataitai’s current changing rooms and flew to Sydney. The proceeds are going towards the Hataitai Community House. As with many small and nonprofit businesses, our income has been greatly impacted by Covid 19. If we achieve high sales we hope to also support the redevelopment of the Hataitai Centre (previously known as the Bowling Club). The calendar is sponsored by many local businesses and for that we are very grateful. We could not have done it without you. We are now thrilled to be able to launch this wonderful calendar. This visit presented the opportunity for the Prime Minister to announce an additional $4 million for the project which will ultimately enable students from 500 NZ schools to work with professonal artists and creative practitioners, benefiting from their specialist artistic knowledge and creative practices. Thirteen of our He Kākano students are involved in the programme which is aimed at enhancing student wellbeing and improving their ‘core competencies in communication, collaboration and creative thinking’, as well as inspiring awareness of careers in the arts and creative sectors. As part of the visit He Kākano shared what they had learned prior to lockdown, demonstrating fantastic memory of their routines and great coordination too. The Prime Minister also met students passionate about the creative arts, taking time to talk to them about their interests and talents. Few people could hear Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain without recalling Disney’s fantastic images created for the 1940 film Fantasia. Inspired by Gogol’s story of a witches’ Black Sabbath on the eerie Bald Mountain, Mussorgsky created a tense and dramatic score that resolves into one of the most beautiful clarinet solos ever written. Scriabin was a pianist-composer who saw music in colour, and ascribed mystical powers to it - and to himself! As he said in one of his notebooks: “I will ignite your imagination with the delight of my promise. I will bedeck you in the excellence of my dreams. I will veil the sky of your wishes with the sparkling stars of my creation. I bring not truth, but freedom.” His 1897 piano concerto was written as he moved from composing Chopinesque miniatures towards the larger, wilder musical canvases of his later career. Pianist Michael Houstoun says he finds the concerto highly poetic. “Its qualities are veiled, sometimes almost like a meditation. It’s a fabulous work.” This concert is named for Tchaikovsky’s Third Symphony, known as the Polish. It, too, is a transitional work. Here, Tchaikovsky loosens the demands of classical European forms in order to strike out on his own with this freely-imagined symphony. The Polish plays up his strengths, with middle movements that conjure up the grace and energy of the ballet, and in the middle, a yearning slow movement that could only be a wordless love song. As Music Director Marc Taddei says, “It is unique among all of his symphonies, being in a major key and with five movements. It is very free in inspiration and one hears intimations of the great ballet scores that he was just about to begin writing.” As you may know, shortly before our last concert, Matthew Ross resigned from his position as Concertmaster for Orchestra Wellington. We wish to thank him for his 12 years of service to the organisation and wish him the best. We also wish to congratulate longstanding Principal of the First Violins, Stephanie Rolfe, for successfully stepping up and leading the Orchestra through its last concert. As we get the recruitment process underway, we are delighted to be able to announce a Guest Concertmaster for this concert, Vesa-Matti Leppänen. To say this is a privilege would be an understatement. Leppänen comes to us from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, where he is Concertmaster. This generous gesture is a visible demonstration of the way arts organisations and artists in Wellington are enriched by their cooperation and exchange with each other. - Stupid people make me want to hurt myself. They are everywhere! There needs to be a law, if you are an idiot, you get your tubes tied and are cock chopped off! It infuriates me how much time I waste in my everyday life dealing with total brainless fuckwits! Yesterday in Starbucks – Yes shock horror I get coffee from Starbucks – get over it! I don’t believe in all that globalism bullshit anyways, so, there I was waiting for my vanilla latte hoping that the guy behind the counter would remember me from last week and give me free coffee again, - I don’t know what it is but people just keeping giving me shit at the moment. Anyways so I overheard this lollipop-head barbie telling her friend in Starbucks, that she had come to New York City to ‘Find herself’!!!!!!!!!!!!! what the fuck? You don’t ‘find yourself’ in NYC you stupid horse-face bitch!! The whole point of being in NY is so that you don’t have to even think about that kind of thing, I mean, if you want to put it spiritually or some shit, you come to NY, you stay in NY to ‘loose’ yourself if anything!! What has she been doing here? Sitting in Central Park next to the John Lennon memorial and singing strawberry fields forever??? For fucks sake?? So I leaned past her toothpick of a so called friend and said “Honey take my advice, I think you should just fuck off back to the farm you came from and start looking up your own arse because you’re clearly gonna have more luck there, there’s no room on the subway for fuckwits like you!” They both turned around and stared at me for a few seconds, and then the walking anorexia advertisement says to me ‘NO thanks, we’ve just ordered.” I flicked my cigarette ash into her coffee and walked off. What an Idiot. Later on I’m in Macy’s waiting for the alien behind the Chanel counter to go on her break so I can grab so lipstick and I hear this wrinkly old tart telling her equally as wrinkly and hideous friend that her daughter is getting married in a month but she’s not sure if she can go to the wedding because she can’t get into see her plastic surgeon till December and she is NOT going to the wedding unless she can get her eyes lifted. She then asks the girl behind the Dior counter if she had any “rouge.” I called out to her from my perch “Rouge is what hookers wear!”Stupid people deserve the stupid things that happen to them. Don’t leave your bag open on the counter while you choose your lunch! Don’t get a perm! Don’t go to the movies, sit in the back row and get annoyed if the people around you are having sex. Don’t think that by adding a cherry to my drink you can call it a cocktail and then throw me out of your stupid, hideous 80s décor bar if I throw it in your face. Don’t make faces at “tsk tsk” noises at me if I smoke standing next to your child at the park, Move!! You stupid saggy-tit moron!

CubaDupa presents GO HOME STAY HOME

- CubaDupa Presents Go Home Stay Home, a Live-Streamed Musical Happening Wellington festival set to unite the community through virtual music festival Following the cancellation of CubaDupa, the festival team have been working on a remedy—a virtual way to celebrate the creativity and community that would have taken over Cuba Street on the 28th and 29th March, with over 1500 artists and 450 performances throughout Wellington’s favourite precinct. And so, Go Home Stay Home – a live-streamed virtual festival has been arranged to keep you smiling through week four of lockdown with a selection of the CubaDupa 2020 artists. Festival Director Gerry Paul says “This is a way of keeping the CubaDupa fire burning until we next hit the streets. And it’s a time when the creativity and talent of our artists are playing such an important part in keeping us sane and inspired – so tune in and come together in solidarity – he waka eke noa!” The programme for Go Home Stay Home may be on a micro scale compared to the monumental street festival, but you can expect it to be bursting with the same energy and vibrancy CubaDupa is known for. On Saturday 18 April from 5 pm, settle in for an evening of sweet tunes from fresh local artists alongside well-loved homegrown acts, streaming live on the CubaDupa Facebook page. Auckland alt-pop-rock band Ha the Unclear will join us from the comfort of their bubble, along with Miss June who will treat the audience to a solo set—a rare occurrence for the noisy, energetic punk rock four-piece. After a two year stint in London, Wellington rapper Name UL is back, along with the always engaging Same Name Confusion, synth-maestro Dayle Jellyman, dream pop songwriter Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant and rising alt-pop artist RIIKI. Usually a band of seven musicians, Dr Reknaw will present a special stripped back solo set, and Maori world-roots performer Māmā Mihirangi will also perform solo. The Ping Pong Party People will wrap up the night with a 90s trance party that’ll scratch your dancing itch. A special thanks goes to WellingtonNZ and the Wellington City Council for their support on this initiative and making Go Home Stay Home possible. CubaDupa is encouraging viewers to donate to MusicHelps, the New Zealand charity that provides vital support to members of the New Zealand music community in times of illness, distress and hardship. - Equity, residents’ parking, behaviour change, and some myths busted – by popular demand, expert insights on parking plus some Wellington changemaking Following our much-viewed first webinar (check it out here), TUI Climate Community and Millions of Mothers with the Wellington Urbanerds are proud to have brought you transport and economics expert Stuart Donovan on everyone’s favourite topic! This one was a bit different: in addition to Stuart speaking on some particularly hot topics of parking, we heard about one area ripe for change. Stu’s slides are here [PDF 2.7 MB]Residents’ parking: what’s with that? Following Stu, we heard from Wellingtonian Oliver Bruce (of Urbanerds fame). He highlighted a particularly amazing feature of the current system: massive subsidies (underpricing) for residents’ parking. They’re skewing people’s choices in our transport system, in a generally bad way, but since the last webinar Oliver and Connect Wellington have a path forward… Oliver’s slides are here [611KB PDF]. So many questionsWhen it was time for questions, we summarised the areas of interest in the chat and Isabella fired the questions to Stuart and Oliver. There was lots of interest in equity, and the ethics of charging for access to publicly owned space. There was a hunger for case-studies of cities that had successfully communicated to their citizenry the good news that managing parking well is overall progressive (i.e. reduces inequality). The catch-22 of on-street vs off-street parking was a big topic, as people like residents’ associations and councillors react to the current (poorly managed) on-street parking, and feel resistant to good developments that don’t provide many carparks. There was also discussion of the opportunity cost of space, and the extent to which home buyers factor in transport options to their purchase price decisions (or assume they’ll get free street parking and grizzle once they’ve moved in with their car/s). (There’s also a good little discussion on Stuart’s Twitter feed, worth a look)Help Wellington do parking better There was a lot of interest from our audience in helping improve parking management in Wellington, reflecting its huge importance to our city’s transport system and its influence on affordable housing. It’s a complicated space and good comprehensive change will take years – see here for more. But the good news is that all kinds of contributions can make a difference. There’s something for everyone! And the process of change will take years, as observed We’re also keen to have more learning and discussion type initiatives, with more local voices and insight. All clubbies should be swimming - we don't teach athletes to swim. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s). In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases. Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. Children who do not successfully meet the swim requirements will be unable to use the paddle boards and compete in the water events at junior surf sessions and carnivals until they obtain their current 200m badge. Maranui Nippers between the ages of 10-13 (as at 30 September) can be chosen as part of a team to attend this special event. Specific criteria must be met in order to be selected for this team: - High attendance levels at Nippers sessions. - High attendance level at Carnivals. - Good results achieved at carnivals. - Competent ocean swimmer in all conditions. - Competent board paddler in all conditions. - Enthusiastic and committed to surf sports. The aim is to develop our juniors to be ready to become the next generation of life guards, and carve a path for those who want to, step up, reach outside of their comfort zone, and set their personal challenge to take on some of the best grommies around NZ on the National stage at Oceans. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s). In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases. Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. Children who do not successfully meet the swim requirements will be unable to use the paddle boards and compete in the water events at junior surf sessions and carnivals until they obtain their current 200m badge. Junior Surf athletes will need to swim 200m confidently (25m lane), followed by a 1 minute tread water, within the SLSNZ allotted time depending on their age. U10/U11/U12 is swim 200m in 7 mins, tread water 1 minute U13 swim in under 5.5 mins, tread water 1 minute U14 swim in under 4.5mins, tread water 1 minute 200m BADGES Badges are to be sewn (carefully) onto your competition cap. If your child(ren) has completed the 200m swim a badge can be collected at sign-in at junior surf sessions on Sunday mornings. <!-- --> PARENTS / CAREGIVERS IN THE WATER U7 AGE GROUP is an age which, at Lyall Bay with its variable wave height and harsh conditions, is unable to be left to just the coaches and lifeguards. U7 athletes require a parent/caregiver to be in the water with them at all times. U8 - U9 AGE GROUP we ideally would like a parent/caregiver in the water or water edge ready to enter if required, If your child requires extra assistance in the water, please enter the water with them, rather than assuming our volunteers will be able to look after them. Please note: Our club relies heavily on the active involvement of parents, the club cannot function without people volunteering. Kids love to see their parents/caregivers interacting at the club. Parent/Caregivers participation is encouraged in the water at all ages. This is a great way for parents to be actively involved, it’s a great way to increase your own water confidence and have FUN. The more adults we have in the water the better. - Ngā Kōrero - Latest Stories from DCM Lives and smiles transformed at the DCM Dental Service communities where whānau are housed, connected, valued and thriving About Us Contact Lives and smiles transformed at the DCM Dental Service DCM’s emergency dental service has been operating since March 2016 – and is the only dental service of its kind outside of hospital emergency departments in New Zealand. Over 800 individuals have had their lives and smiles transformed thanks to the expertise of DCM’s volunteer dentists, led by Dr. Sophie McKenna, our lead dentist. Volunteer dentist Dr. Sophie McKenna leads DCM’s Dental Service. (Source: 1News.) Sophie’s father was a dentist, and she worked with him as a dental assistant during the school holidays. By the age of 17, she had decided that dentistry was a good path for her. Marrying Andrew, a fellow dentist, and working in different practices in the Wellington area, the two were able to share work and parenting responsibilities. Sophie first heard about DCM at a New Zealand Dental Association branch meeting, putting her name forward as a volunteer. “DCM was a surprise to me,” says Sophie. “I didn’t expect to receive so much pleasure from helping the whānau with their dental care. “When I first began volunteering, our son was dealing with significant health challenges, and I was at a low point. To come into DCM and see good people working hard to improve themselves from their very low points, with the support of DCM staff, was humbling and put my own woes into perspective.” Sophie explains that many of the people coming to DCM’s Dental Service need fillings, periodontal work, and extractions. “They often come to us with broken and missing teeth. When you are experiencing homelessness, living from crisis to crisis, oral health care may fall lower on the priority list, especially due to the expense. “But the big key to DCM’s success is not that treatment is free – but that DCM makes marginalised people feel so welcome when they come here. They don’t feel judged – and that includes when they sit in our dental chair.” Sophie treats Ngata during an emergency dental session at DCM. (Source: 1News.) “I’ll say, ‘what’s the most important thing that I can help you with today?’ And they look astonished,” says Sophie. “They are normally told to lie back, open up, and then a health professional gives them a carefully worded lecture about what isn’t being done, how disastrous things are. “And that’s not we’re here for. We’re here to make them feel better.” We know that poor oral health has been linked to gingivitis, oral infection, heart disease and strokes. But additionally, aesthetic issues can affect your ability to eat and speak – with a huge cost to your self-esteem. DCM Manahautū (Director) Stephen Turnock says that most of the people DCM works with have missing or decayed teeth, and the feelings of shame around this can take a toll. “When someone is continually looking at the ground, and not wanting to smile or feeling whakamā, then that creates more barriers.” This is why in 2023, we have begun creating dental impressions (diagnostic models or moulds) on-site at DCM and fitting whānau with partial plates – often of upper teeth. Sophie has been joined in this initiative by her husband, Andrew, who is no longer able to practice dentistry on his own due to an injury. Still wanting to support DCM, Andrew is able to assist Sophie in various ways. Sophie shares how life-changing their work has already been. Toko before and after. Toko was someone with missing incisors – the most visible teeth in the upper mouth. Sophie and Andrew created a mould and fitted him with replacement teeth. “Toko was exceptionally happy with the partial plate, and his ‘after’ smile filled the room!” says Sophie. Another person whose smile has been transformed is Lisa. Lisa has experienced homelessness, including rough sleeping, before she was housed through DCM’s Aro Mai Housing First service. From there, she was able to focus on her wellbeing, including her oral healthcare. Lisa before and after. Sophie had to encourage Lisa to do a ‘before’ photo while smiling so we could compare the results. “Now she can’t stop smiling!” Sophie says. When DCM first met Simon, he had little to smile about. DCM Outreach workers Ngaire and Hazel approached him on the street in Kilbirnie, where he says he was at his lowest ebb. “DCM saved my life, literally” Simon explains. “If there’s a God, it was great timing on all fronts.” Simon also survived the Loafers Lodge fire. On the tragic night, he knocked on people’s doors, urging them to evacuate, while managing to escape with his phone and wallet, and the clothes on his back. After a move into transitional housing, Simon was able to concentrate on other pressing matters, including agonising dental pain. He popped into DCM one day, and met Ali Janes, who coordinates our dental clinic. Ali got Simon in to see Sophie and Andrew, who extracted the problem teeth. “You could really see the difference it had made for him, which was awesome,” says Ali. “He left pain free and basically floated out of here!” Simon was left with very few teeth, but Sophie and Andrew supported him through the life-changing process of getting a full denture. “I’m still learning to smile properly, which is something I haven’t done for a long time,” Simon explains. “But – I can almost look in the mirror again. “When I needed DCM the most, you guys have always been there. Now I’m trying to pay it forward.” Simon popped into DCM to show us his new smile. DCM’s new initiative creating replacement teeth for whānau has been supported by a $5,000 community grant from the New Zealand Dental Association. “My vision for DCM’s Dental Service is that we are able to expand our services a little,” says Sophie. “Ideally, we would like to offer more opportunities to replace teeth that have previously been extracted, as we’ve been doing with the grant this year. “Currently, relief of pain is great, but what can we do to support our lovely people and lift them up even more? It is obvious from the beaming smiles of Toko, Lisa and others that restoring their smile boosts their sense of worth. Society inadvertently judges those with missing teeth. “When someone’s smile is restored and they feel and look good, they project a confidence and positivity that is difficult to measure. It is infused in their posture, their willingness to engage with others – and we see that their approach to issues that challenge them is altered for the better. “It’s a no-brainer to try to help with this more.” We mihi to Sophie and Andrew McKenna for their passion and professional expertise as they help to transform the lives and smiles of our whānau. An opportunity for artists or all kinds to network and discuss ideas working in new ways in Wellington city. Tuesdays 12.30-2pm March 13: On being embedded. Working with other industries and groups - what is the potential for residences or having artists embedded in different spaces in the city? We talk with two artists who have been working in work residencies and have an interest in how their work can interact in new ways through this: theatremaker Leo Gene Peters, and visual artist Julian Priest. Leo Gene Peters is a theatre director and maker and founder of A Slightly Isolated Dog who have been creating celebrated devised work since 2005. “We’re trying to have a conversation with the public about what matters to each of us… and through that conversation we’ll create performance work. The goal is to find new and different ways to use live performance, conversation, virtual platforms, social media (and other things) to create a space where we can meet and reflect together. A space where we can discuss important questions in our lives that we normally don’t talk about with strangers.” A Slightly Isolated Dog are currently in residence at Creative HQ. who aim to help develop and grow businesses in Wellington through “nourishing entrepreneurial talent and driving innovation.” Julian Priest is an artist working with participatory and technological forms and recent work explores relationships to different infrastructures including time, energy, security, health and communications. In 2017 Julian created the Citizen Water Map Lab with Letting Space as part of the Common Ground Public Art Festival where Hutt City residents and community groups were invited to collect ground water and bring it to the lab and test it with data represented in an illuminated installation that produced a map of local water quality. Julian was co-founder of early wireless freenetwork community Consume.net in London. He became an advocate for the freenetworking movement and has pursued wireless networking as a theme in fields of arts, development, and policy. Julian is currently undertaking a residency at the Thomas King observatory Wellington (supported by the Wellington Museums Trust), an old 1912 observatory which is part of the Carter Observatory complex. April 17: On the art of keeping in business. Sasha Copland and Kerry Ann Lee. The realities of the business of being an independent artist. We introduce two artists both interested in working in a variety of different ways with the public and communities. Kerry Ann Lee is a celebrated visual artist, designer and educator who uses hand-made processes and socially-engaged projects to explore hybrid identities and histories of migration. She creates installation, publication and image-based work and has a long practice in independent artists’ publishing. Sacha Copland is a dancer, choreographer and the Artistic Director of Java Dance Theatre. As she told The Big Idea here she believes in the power of dance to build empathy and her works aim to permeate and dissolve the distance between people by creating dance that “clambers into your senses and gets underneath your fingernails.” Founded in 2003 Java is a professional dance company that presents dance theatre nationally and internationally often working in site specific locations, or creating work around specific themes that engage new audiences.
