    • Three of Our Own to Represent NZ at 2025 Trans-Tasman Masters Challenge
      • We’re absolutely stoked to share that three of our Northern United lads have been named in the New Zealand squads for the 2025 Trans-Tasman Masters Challenge! A huge congrats to: Peter Thomas – NZ Men’s 65s Aaron Clulow – NZ Men’s 50s Jason Neilson – NZ Men’s 50s What a bloody awesome achievement! Pulling on the black shirt is no small thing, and we couldn’t be prouder to see these legends representing Aotearoa across the ditch. Pete, Loosie, and Jase are long-time club men who always give their all on and off the field. They’re great role models for the rest of us – proving that top-level hockey doesn’t stop just because you’ve had a few more birthdays. All the best for the challenge, fellas . We’ll be backing you all the way!

    • A Huge Thank You to New World Newlands – Supporting Our Junior Stars!
      • As we welcome back our junior teams for another exciting season of hockey, we’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to New World Newlands for their generous support of our club. Thanks to New World Newlands, each of our junior teams will be able to celebrate the effort, teamwork, and spirit of our young players with Player of the Day certificates. These small but meaningful tokens of recognition go a long way in encouraging our tamariki, building confidence, and keeping the fun at the heart of every game. We’re incredibly grateful for local businesses like New World Newlands who continue to back grassroots sport and invest in the next generation of players. Your support helps us create a positive, community-focused environment where our juniors can thrive on and off the turf. Here’s to another great season—see you on the field!

    • Huge congrats to our Northern United players named in the 2025 Wellington rep squads!
      • We’re absolutely stoked to see so many of our players recognised for their hard work and commitment this season. Fredrich Schmidt, Henry O’Brien, Simon Korb, Zac Fowler, Jacob Eade, Adam Baker and JB Macadre have all been selected for the Wellington U18 Men’s Gold Team. On the women’s side, Yasmin Rodda has made the U18 Women’s Black Team, and Eliza Ho-Ng has been named in the Gold Team. Incredible mahi from everyone involved. And it’s not just our U18s in the spotlight. A massive shout-out to Brayden Chapman-Taylor, who’s been named in the Wellington U16 Boys squad. Another exciting step forward in his hockey journey. We’re also really proud to see Leah Murphy selected as co-coach for the U18 Men’s team. It’s fantastic to see our coaching talent getting recognition at this level too. Getting picked for a rep team is no small feat. It takes talent, hard work and a heap of dedication. These players (and coach!) will now get the chance to test themselves at a national level and represent Wellington with pride. The rep tournaments are just around the corner. The Vantage National U18 Champs run from 29 June to 5 July, with the boys heading to Timaru and the girls travelling to North Harbour. The U16 Boys will hit the turf in New Plymouth from 8–11 July. We’re so proud to have such strong Northern representation across the board. Bring on the campaigns! Northern United is right behind you.

    • Our Newest Life Member: Jenny Whitworth
      • We are pleased to announce the appointment of Jenny Whitworth as our newest Life Member of the Northern United Hockey Club at the 2024 AGM. Jenny has been an integral part of our club for the past 18 years, contributing immeasurably to its growth and success. Most notably, she served as Secretary for 12 years, a role in which she demonstrated exceptional organisational skills, dedication, and an unyielding commitment to the well-being of our members and the future of the club. Her efforts ensured that our club remained not only well-organised but also financially stable, all while maintaining her ever-present friendly and positive attitude. Jenny’s influence extended far beyond her administrative work. Her warmth, positivity, and approachable nature made her a beacon of encouragement for all who interacted with her. She has been the heart and soul of the club, a constant source of support, and a driving force behind many of our successes. When Jenny moved to Whanganui at the end of 2023, she continued to support the club behind the scenes, providing a supportive and guiding hand to the Northern United committee. But that wasn't enough for Jenny—she continued to help out in the Wellington hockey community, managing not only the Wellington Women's NHC Tier 1 team but also the newly created Premier Hockey League Falcons. What an inspiration she is to all of us! We are indeed lucky to have her! On behalf of all members of the Northern United Hockey Club, we would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Jenny on this well-deserved recognition. Jenny, thank you for everything you have done for the club. Your positive impact will never be forgotten.

    • 2024 Season Wrap-Up
      • he 2024 season kicked off in stellar fashion with sunny trials that tested everyone's hydration levels and brought plenty of excitement for what lay ahead. A fantastic return of players from last season, combined with some welcome new faces, laid the foundation for another strong year. The team cultures across the club continued to shine, evident in the loyalty of our returning players and the enthusiastic integration of new ones. P1 Women continued their reign as a powerhouse in the Wellington competition. They reclaimed the Tier 1 Intercity trophy with style, defeating Hutt United in a hard-fought battle. While they narrowly missed out on the gold medal in the finals against Hutt United, their consistent performances and enviable team culture solidified their status as a formidable force. The P1 Men started the season with a bang, securing a 5-1 victory against Vic Uni and, soon after, a thrilling 2-1 win over Dalefield at Clareville to bring home the Schaefer Cup for the first time in recent memory. The men faced tough competition in Tier 2 of the Intercity Competition and, while mixed results followed, their cohesion as a team grew. The season culminated in a high-pressure final against Vic Uni, ending in a dramatic shootout that determined the season’s standings. P2 Men faced a challenging season, finishing 7th in their grade after a hard-fought victory against Victoria Uni in the 7th vs 8th playoff. While the on-field results didn’t always meet expectations, the team found positives to build on for the future. A significant turnover in core players over recent seasons impacted consistency and team balance, particularly in defensive positions. However, the influx of talented school-age players, including German exchange students and Wellington age group representatives, brought energy and speed to the team. Maintaining a positive team environment was a priority, and the players worked hard for each other both on and off the field. Our P3 Women’s teams had their own standout moments. P3 Gold broke their infamous “3rd place curse” in an unexpected fashion, finishing 5th this year. A strong core of returning players, bolstered by fiery new additions, created a positive and competitive environment. P3 Black emerged as a force to be reckoned with in their grade, challenging opponents with fierce determination and impressive player development throughout the season. The P4 Men showed determination and grit throughout a tough season. Starting with promising numbers, availability challenges later in the season often left the team short on substitutes. Despite this, their commitment never wavered, delivering 100% effort in every game. Their goalkeeper, Brayden, a 15-year-old Newlands College student, stepped into the role with remarkable composure, improving steadily and balancing his college commitments with club hockey. The team enjoyed moments where everything clicked, scoring some fantastic goals and crafting a couple of memorable wins. While fitness and depth sometimes worked against them in the final quarters, they ended the season on a positive note – not finishing last in the grade! Their resilience and spirit provide a strong platform to build on for 2025. A special thank you goes to Charles Agate, who has spent many, many years looking after our junior teams with an incredible amount of time and dedication. His hard work and leadership have been invaluable, and the impact he’s had on the club is something we all deeply appreciate. The junior side of the club will surely miss you, but we are excited to have you coaching the P3 Women’s Gold team for the 2025 season. As we wrap up the 2024 season, we’re already excited for what’s to come in 2025. A huge thank you to all players, coaches, managers, and supporters who made this year so memorable. Here’s to more success, more goals, and more unforgettable moments. Let’s make 2025 our year!

Proposed by Sam French That the Constitution presented to the Meeting be adopted in substitution for the current Constitution in its entirety. Proposed by Sam French That from 2023 season onwards, for Executive Committee Members, NUHC to pay a nominal payment for services and responsibility in running the Club. The purpose is to encourage applications, entice new people and skills to be found for the growth of the Club. Acknowledge the extensive time and effort involved in providing this voluntary effort. • Motions on Notice for 2020 AGM
      •  The following motions have been received for the 2020 AGM: Proposed by Stephen Mills, Patron and Life Member: MOTION: That clause (c) of Rule 5 ‘Membership’ of the Constitution be revoked and replaced with the following: (c) HONORARY MEMBERS: Any person approved by the Executive may be admitted as a non-playing member of the Club on payment of an annual subscription as set by the Executive. Such members shall be known as Honorary Members and shall have no voting rights.  HONORARY VOTING MEMBERS: Any person approved by the Executive may be admitted as a non-playing voting member of the Club on payment of an annual subscription as set by the Executive. Such members shall be known as Honorary Voting Members and shall have voting rights to reflect their contribution to the Club.  Reason:  Northern United Hockey Club Inc. needs more assistance with the operation of the Club and wishes to engage with former members, supporters on the sidelines, member partners and families, inviting them to Club events, welcoming feedback and offers of assistance from time to time.  With regard to  Honorary Voting Members this would allow the Executive to admit coaches, managers, umpires and others involved directly in helping the Club to achieve its objectives, and who are not playing or on the Executive, to have a say by way of voting at General Meetings.  These memberships may give the Club greater networking and word of mouth exposure in attracting new playing talent, administrators, sponsorships and other assistance.  It will also allow a fuller register of members and supporters to be retained and used to contact past or lapsed members to be made aware of reunions and events as they occur.   This membership would also entitle these members to any benefits currently in place or to be negotiated with sponsors and other entities involved with the Club. It is important to keep former members engaged as their children can eventually join the junior or senior Club and add to our growth and administrative prospects. They are a great resource of the history and successes of Northern, and a guide to future achievement. Proposed by Jono Mackey, Member and coach: MOTION: That Rule 18 ‘Uniform and Colours’ of the Constitution be revoked and replaced with the following: 18. UNIFORM AND COLOURS  The official uniform of the Club shall be:-  a) Playing attire shall comprise of black, brown, gold and white.  b) Socks, black with a gold top.  The above uniform is to be worn at all matches and at all times when the Club is playing under its name unless otherwise directed by the Executive of the Club. Reason:  There is a desire to keep the Club engaged with its history and traditions and retain in the playing uniforms the original colours worn from Technical College Old Boys through to Northern United Hockey Club Inc. It is hoped players and officials will be consulted in terms of the playing uniform design. Usually WHA require notification of a change in uniform. Proposed by Sam French, President: MOTION: That the word “Trustee” or “Trustees” be replaced throughout the Constitution with the word “Guardian” or “Guardians”. Reason: The Trusts Act 2019 comes into force in 2020. This Act puts much greater duties on trustees of any types of trust. The Trustees mentioned in the Constitution of the Club do not act as normal trustees do and the intention does not seem to have been to create a trust, as the Club has never parted with legal or equitable ownership of its investment funds. The current ‘Trustees’ are simply a check on the Executive’s power and use of the investments for the future. The word “Guardians” makes more sense with what the role actually entails, and should make it clearer that there is no trust intended or created.

    • Patron's Message 2020
      • Thank you all for your contribution to the Northern United Hockey Club Inc. in what is likely the most challenging year in your lifetime regarding sport, work, health and family. Congratulations to teams and individuals who achieved championships, representative honours, Club honours and promotion to higher playing grades.  The Executive and support members, coaches, managers, umpires and officers, have done a good job on your behalf in reacting to changing circumstances then getting everything organised to commence a 2020 season which I am sure you all enjoyed.   We really need more assistance from Club members to achieve our goals and also undertake routine administration tasks effectively. We need lots of ideas, networking, shared skills and experience to grow the Club, entice new members, inspire current members, welcome back past members, and be the Club of Choice in Wellington. Club – an organisation of people with a common purpose or interest, who meet regularly and take part in shared activities:  Who do you know that?: Could be a minor or major sponsor. Is transferring to Wellington. Was lost to the sport of hockey. May coach or umpire but needs some training. Has retired from playing a sport. Has children looking for a sport.  If you can spare 1-2 hours a week, fortnight, month or season many people can benefit from your time and talents by enriching the Club and wider hockey community.   For example: Umpire a junior, secondary or open grade match. • Hello to everyone in lock-down... I hope you are faring OK. I know this will be a very stressful time for many of you.To those of you in the health sector and other essential services, thank you for your work and commitment. As you’re no doubt aware, Hockey New Zealand and most other sports have postponed all activities until at least 2 May 2020. This date, however, was set before we moved to Level 4, so we have no idea whether it will be feasible or even legal to begin around that date.We are in constant contact with Wellington Hockey, and they are planning to begin the season as soon as possible after this time, but this will be subject of course to the Covid-19 Alert Level and advice from Hockey NZ and government. All turfs are currently closed, so please do not use them.Northern United has registered six teams, as per last year. Four men's (P1, P2, P3 x2 teams) and 2 women's teams(P1 and P3), based on registrations to date.We have put rough teams together on paper on a ‘wider squad basis’ but haven’t finalised the teams as our final men's trial couldn’t take place. We will reconnect with all new and current players who advised us of their contact/registration details, once we know when the season is to re-start and Wellington Hockey have determined whether the season should be shortened or lengthened.Player subs will reflect the decisions made by Wellington Hockey and will continue to be based on the number of games to be played. No subs will be requested until we know what the season will look like.We are aware player circumstances may change and so please contact us if you are no longer able to play.In the meantime, if you haven’t registered, or you have friends who also want to play, please fill in the form below with your contact details. Register your details Please stay safe, stay at home, and stay fit!

    • Northern Men Take Premier 2 Championship For Second Year
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Photo by Lewis Bishop The Northern Men’s team have completed a double, winning their Premier 2 grade for the second year running. In a repeat of last years’ final, they met a strong Tawa Titans team, who were looking to complete their commanding season and push for promotion to the top tier competition. Northern’s ‘Honey Badgers’ had met Tawa five times already this season. During regular-season games, they had come out worse off, but in both the two previous finals matches - in the grading round final and the first semifinal, Northern had held the Titans to a draw, before besting them in penalty shoot-outs. It was after that penalty shoot-out win in the semi-finals that Northern went straight through to the grand final, while Tawa had to fight Hutt United in a second semi. The Northern boys, however, had a free weekend after their friendly match was cancelled. Northern went into the match looking like the underdogs, but went 1-nil up early after a mis-timed strike from player-coach Nathan Croad found the back of the net. The Titans had to wait until the second half to reply, taking the score to 1-1, and looking like the teams would be going to shoot-out for a third time. However, a goal from youngster and Capital rep, Samuel Bishop, put the ball away to bring the Badgers back into the lead. While Tawa’s attack was fierce, and keeper Sam French was called upon to make several saves throughout the game, as the clock counted down, the match felt firmly within Northern control. The Northern team continued to push for the entire 70 minutes, with midfielder Olly Wright chasing down a ball hit out of the Northern defensive 25, to take it into the Tawa circle. While Northern wasn’t able to capitalise off Wright’s attack, 2-1 was how the match ended, with the Northern United boys claiming the championship for the second year running.

    • Northern Premier 1 Teams End the Year On a High
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > A cold, wet NUHC Prem 1 Women’s team after their 5-6 playoff with Karori In an interesting twist, the Northern Premier 1 Men and Women’s teams have both ended their 2019 seasons ranked fifth equal. The Northern P1 Women, in their first year in the competition after possibly a 30 year hiatus, had an exceptional year under the guidance of coach David McNaughtan. With several wins under their belt in their first season, the women made their way into the 5-6th playoffs. In a match which was marred by torrential rain throughout, the Northern women fought to the end against Karori. The turf was underwater for most of the game, but with less than 10 minutes remaining, and with the scores tied 4-4, the rain became too heavy and the umpires called the game off. This left a very cold, wet, but relieved team fifth equal with Karori. The men’s competition was similarly affected by the weather, however it was the Saturday earlier that affected the men. Their penultimate match against Victoria University was unable to start due to heavy rain and hail that put the turf under several inches of water. The game was rescheduled for a midweek late night game. The disruption put pressure on both teams, with the match being the most stressful of the year for coach Jono Mackey and his team. A tit-for-tat scoreline kept the pressure on Northern, but the Northern strikers and excellent keeping by Cameron Loader kept them in the game. The Northern boys ended up triumphing 3-2 over the students, keeping them out of the relegation zone and putting them through to the 5-6 playoff. A death in the Wellington Indians hockey community unfortunately meant that the the 5-6 playoff against Wellington Indians Sports Club was unable to be played. Despite the unfortunate reason for cancellation, the Northern boys were relieved to end the year fifth equal. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > NUHC Premier 1 Men after their final match of the season against Victoria University.
