Carbon cranks jostled for space with moto-x handlebars and vintage derailleurs creating a overwhelming but somehow cohesive jumble of colours and textures.

Emily is our 2024 Head Girl and Davida had the honour of hearing her mother, Dame Miranda Harcourt, deliver a powerful keynote address alongside Hon Louise Upston, Acting Minister for Women, Dame Farah Palmer, Pou Akonga (Executive Director) Māori Student Success, Massey University, Deputy Chair of New Zealand Rugby and former captain of the Black Ferns, and Chloe and Florence Van Dyke, co-founders of Chia Sisters.

    • Huakina - WYC's First Concert of the Year !!
      • There are only three rehearsals left before Huakina, the Wellington Youth Choir’s first concert of our 2024 cycle. Meaning ‘to open’ in te reo Māori, this concert is dedicated to disrupting the pale, male and stale status quo of choral composition by uplifting wāhine, nonbinary and irawhiti choral composers from Aotearoa. This year is our 35th anniversary, and we are very proud to present this concert as the first of two queer-centric performances that the choir will be undertaking this year. The second being the North Island debut and 25th anniversary of Considering Matthew Shepard, an extravagant choral oratorio that was written in response to the murder of Matthew Shepard.

    • Patea-Fereti to run out for 100th First Class Match as Pride Named to take on Waikato
      • The Wellington Pride conclude their 2023 campaign this weekend, as they head to Hamilton to take on Waikato on Sunday. Captain Jackie Patea-Fereti will run out for her 100th First Class Match, after reaching 75 games for the Pride earlier in the season. Patea-Fereti made her Pride debut in 2006, the year the Pride won the title. Coming off the bye week, Head Coach Fusi Feaunati has made some changes to the side that went down to Bay of Plenty. “We’re looking to put out a polished performance to end the season on a high, the girls have worked hard and deserve nothing less to wrap up the campaign” said Feaunati.

    • Outstanding success for Rongotai Scientists
      • Rongotai College was the most represented school at the NIWA Science Fair in 2023 which is a feat in itself. It exemplifies our "give it a go" attitude which was on display for the judges and the broader Wellington Community. Science Fair Boys The work presented was the culmination of many months of primary research for boys in Year 9 and some innovative product design from our Year 10 students. Projects presented by Rongotai students were really strong and innovative; as a result, we were not only the largest group attending, but also the most successful! In all, 12 awards were made to Rongotai College projects, with some projects winning multiple awards

      • On Tuesday 14 February, Te Papa celebrates 25 years since opening with a new Rautaki | Strategy to take it forward into the future. The museum’s co-leaders, Kaihautū | Māori Co-leader Arapata Hakiwai and Tumu Whakarae | Chief Executive Courtney Johnston, and its Board led by Dame Fran Wilde have embraced a new vision for Te Papa to carry it forward for the next 25 years and beyond. By 14 February 2023, Te Papa will have welcomed more than 34 million visitors since opening. It cares for more than two million items, from ancient fossils to digital artworks, from tiny aphids to ocean-going waka. It consistently rates as one of the world’s best museums, and its approach to storytelling and indigenous knowledge remains a global model.

    • Half price fares to be extended on Metlink services
      • Metlink has welcomed the Government’s extension of half price public transport fares until the end of June 2023. The extension, announced today by Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, is part of the Government’s ongoing support intended to ease the cost-of-living pressures. Metlink Commercial, Strategy & Investments Manager Tim Shackleton said the half price fares extension would enable passengers to ready themselves for the eventual go live date for the Community Connect scheme which permanently reduces public transport fares for Community Services Card (CSC) holders by 50 percent. “With around 90,000 CSC holders in the Wellington region, Metlink has worked with the Ministry of Social Development to develop a system that provides quick and easy access to half price fares when the scheme rolls out,” says Tim Shackleton.

      • 4 October – 15 December 2024 Vaiei Tupuna is an exhibition of contemporary tapa from across Moana Nui that brings together newly commissioned responses to taonga from the collections of Ngā Puhipuhi o Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection and The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, alongside historic and contemporary artworks that acknowledge the tupuna and atua who activate this practice. Gifted by Sarah Vaki, elder and master tapa maker from Fatu Hiva in the Marquesas, the title of the exhibition translates as “heritage of our ancestors”. Vaiei Tupuna takes up these shared genealogies and histories of tapa to celebrate the vitality of the artform in the present, and to extend and build knowledge for the future. Hina, the atua of tapa makers, is present throughout Vaiei Tupuna.

Seamus Johnson has been described as a one man musical sensation. With blistering vocals and guitar chops you will think you’re listening to a whole band. Fresh back from touring with Sea Mouse, Seamus is here to bring some authentic old school blues! Beans is a recent addition to the Wellington folk scene, importing a wild array of original songs all the way from deepest, darkest Yorkshire. Historically, racing at this venue has been in the wet, and under these conditions simply getting a bike down the track becomes a game of survival. But on this occasion, Karori turned it on for riders. At the end of racing - Daniel Meilink took out the Open Men category ahead of Michael Mells and Bryn Dickerson. In Masters 1 & 2 - Nathan Timoko and Ali Quinn claimed the top spots respectively. And the juniors were dominated by the Macdonalds - with Finlay taking out under 17 and brother Lachie, under 15. Current National Champ Sarah Atkin recorded a very respectable time that would have put her just outside top 10 in Open Men, and Finn van Leuven also put down a solid time in Hardtail. We’ll catch everyone at the final WDHS round this Saturday, 6th December at Maidstone. Race Results & Series Points Juvie & Duel Slalom Grand Opening Crews and contractors have been hard at work at Miramar of the past months and we’ve recently seen the completion of two new tracks - Juvenile Delinquent, and the Kids Duel Slalom. The sum of these, combined with the pump track and dirt jumps is a great zone for kids and beginners to hone their skills, only minutes from the City. The grand opening of Juvie and the Kids Duel Slalom last weekend was a huge success. About 150 people turned up to mark the occasion on Sunday, including City Councillors and Mayor, Celia Wade Brown. Once the tape was cut, Mayor Celia spoke positively of the Club’s recent work at Miramar and Island Bay. South Coast Kids Track Wins Another Award You may recall that earlier this year, the Club received a Wellington Airport Community Award for its work on the South Coast Kids Track. Well last week the Kids Track did it again - this time at the 2014 NZ Recreation Association Awards. The annual awards recognise excellence in the recreation and leisure industry, and the South Coast Kids Track was named Most Outstanding Project. Thanks once again to Wellington City Council, Trail Fund NZ, Bike Wellington, Revolve Cycling and Southstar Trails.  Draft Suburban Reserves Management Plan Submissions close this Friday 5th on the WCC Draft Suburban Reserves Management Plan. This is the last opportunity members of the public will have to share their views on the future management of Wellington’s suburban reserves - between Khandallah and Miramar (including Makara). This plan will have a significant impact on the future of mountain biking in our city, and the planning process only comes around once every 10 years. So, if you have a few spare minutes and a desire to see the WCC supporting mountain biking in our suburban reserves, get in there.   Upcoming Events WDHS Round 3 - Maidstone - THIS SATURDAY The final round of the 2014 Wellington Downhill Series will take place THIS SATURDAY, 6th December at Maidstone, Upper Hutt. WORD Bike-a-Polooza - Sunday Dec 7th This Sunday at the Wainuiomata Trails - WORD invites you to join them for the first Bike-a-Polooza - New Zealand's best, super fun, and raddest kids mountain bike event ever! There will be four great courses to choose from on the day - so something for all the 3-17 year olds. Cost: $15 individual, $40 family of 3 kids. For more info and online registration check out WORD Bike-a-Polooza Escape from Mt Crawford Mini Enduro - Jan 19th, 2015 The third annual Escape from Mt Crawford Mini Enduro is upcoming - Wellington Anniversary weekend, January 19th. We’ve run the annual fundraiser for the Miramar Track Project for the past couple of years, and 2015 will undoubtedly be the biggest yet. As per last year, we’ll be running two classes - Misdemeanor and Felony, plus the Sufferfest hill climb, and we’re throwing in a Kids Mini D for the little rippers. Also, in breaking news - Yeastie Boys have just come on board as a sponsor. This is great news if you like beer.   Online entries opening later this month Event Details >> Klunkers, Chainless & Kids Bike Dual Slalom - Jan 24th, 2015 After a successful event earlier this year, Klunkers is back! The aim of the race is simple: dig out your old kit and 90s race weapon, do as many timed runs of Jailbrake as your body (or bike) will permit within 2 ½ hours, and heckle like you’ve never heckled. There will be four categories: Klunkers, Chainless, proKlunkers and Klunkers (under 12), and an additional Kids Bike Dual Slalom race. Entry is by donation of old (useful) bike parts, cash, or your bike. All proceeds go to Biketech and the Mechanical Tempest. Event Details >> Trail Building Updates Clinical (Polhill Reserve) As you may recall from the last Polhill update, The Brooklyn Trail Builders reported significant progress on Clinical. When it’s complete, the track will round off a grand loop of the Reserve. Most of the track is now rideable, and it’s set for completion sometime during early 2015. Currently, contractors are finishing construction of bridges on the trail, and volunteers are working on approximately 200m at the bottom. Although this section is incomplete, there’s a steep track that can be used to bypass it. The next dig is this coming Sunday, 7th December at 3pm. Details over at Brooklyn Trail Builders. There will be an event to commemorate the official opening of Clinical, tentatively around April 2015. We’ll keep you posted. We would also like to congratulate BTB whose work was this week recognised at the Roll on Wellington Cycle Awards. Mt Victoria Thanks to all those who contributed recently to the Mt Victoria trail user survey. We’re currently compiling the results, but feedback was largely positive. In case you missed it - here’s the full rundown. But in short, the WCC has requested that changes be made to the lower part of the Super D line. The Club, in consultation with trail leaders and the Council, has come up with a plan that involves essentially realigning the trail, from the SPCA south. In addition, the plan includes work around busy junctions to reduce the risk of conflict with other trail users. No major work will take place on Mt Victoria until the new year. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. Children who do not successfully meet the swim requirements will be unable to use the paddle boards and compete in the water events at junior surf sessions and carnivals until they obtain their current 200m badge.  Junior Surf athletes will need to swim 200m confidently (25m lane), followed by a 1 minute tread water, within the SLSNZ allotted time depending on their age.  U10/U11/U12 is swim 200m in 7 mins, tread water 1 minute U13 swim in under 5.5 mins, tread water 1 minute U14 swim in under 4.5mins, tread water 1 minute 200m BADGES Badges are to be sewn (carefully) onto your competition cap. U7 athletes require a parent/caregiver to be in the water with them at all times. U8 - U9 AGE GROUP we ideally would like a parent/caregiver in the water or water edge ready to enter if required,  If your child requires extra assistance in the water, please enter the water with them, rather than assuming our volunteers will be able to look after them. Please note:  Our club relies heavily on the active involvement of parents, the club cannot function without people volunteering. Kids love to see their parents/caregivers interacting at the club. Parent/Caregivers participation is encouraged in the water at all ages. This is a great way for parents to be actively involved, it’s a great way to increase your own water confidence and have FUN. View this email in your browser Tis the season for Afterwork Orienteering and our Christmas AGM Mihi nui kia <> Our start to spring has been a bit quiet locally but now we have plenty of news for November! Next weekend is the 37th Anniversary of the Wayne Cretney Classic, organised by Bryan Teahan. It’ll be a true endurance event using new maps around Mornington and Berhampore. Red medium, Orange, Yellow and White courses on-the-day courses are still available. We also have a club events in the pipeline, including afterwork events at Onslow College on Wednesday 15 November and Te Herenga Waka VUW campus on Wednesday 29 November. Orienteering Hutt Valley will also offer some afterwork events before Christmas and the annual Big Trig rogaine on Sunday 10 December. See you at the next event! Paul Teesdale-Spittle President Club achievements at Nationals Orienteering Wellington can celebrate a number of achievements from the NZ National Orienteering Championships held in Hawke’s Bay recently. Many members placed well, especially some of our veteran runners. Here are some of the standout achievements – which in no way overshadow the satisfaction and personal success all runners should feel irrespective of where they finished. In the sprint, Lauren Wills came first in W40A, as did Gillian Ingham in W65A, Neil Kane in M75A and Don Locke in M85A. Mattias Bengtsson took second place in M10, as did Lisa Bengtsson in W40A and Dorothy Kane in W75A. In the middle distance, Yvette Baker took first in W50A. So too did Gillian Ingham in W65A, Neil Kane in M75A and Don Locke in M85A. David King took second place in M60A, as did Kate Fortune in W75A. The long event on the Tuna Nui map was a standout whereby seven members came first in their grades: Katie Cory-Wright in W21A, Lisa Bengtsson in W21AS, Sarah O’Sullivan in W35A, William Power in M40AS, and David Middleton in M55AS. Gillian Ingham and Neil Kane took triple crowns, coming first in their classes too. Lara Molloy was hot on Katie’s heels coming second in W21A, as did Lauren Wills in W40A, Yvette Baker in W50A, and David King in M60A. We have a lot to be proud of from this year’s Nationals, and can look forward to taking spirit of fun and success to Rotorua next year. We’ll confirm the venue and details soon but our gathering tends to include plenty of time for orienteering antics, food and socialising as well as business. The Fortune Cup for service and Endeavour Cup for performance are also awarded. On the topic of business, club officers must be elected. I, Lachlan, and Gerald are all happy to stand again as president, secretary and treasurer respectively but equally happy to step aside if you’d like to have a go. Sarah O’Sullivan to lead ONZ Congratulations to Sarah O’Sullivan, who has been elected Chair of Orienteering New Zealand from December! Sarah was our own club president immediately before Paul and has been active in the club for many years. Sarah runs elite grades at major events. To know precisely where the control will be placed you need to convert the map into an image in your mind of how the terrain in the control circle will look. Magnus Bengtsson and Lizzie Ingham are continuing with group interval and sprint training at 6pm Tuesdays. Looking ahead: Major events in 2024 Sprint clinic Orienteering Wellington will hold a Sprint Clinic on Saturday 20 to Monday 22 January (Wellington Anniversary Weekend) on local sprint maps.       • Fare changes are coming soon for passengers aged 24 and under, following the government’s decision to withdraw funding for age-based concessions. From 1 May 2024, following the rollback of the former government’s age-based concessions on Metlink services: children aged 5 to 16, or older if still at secondary school, will pay half the adult fare, fares for people aged 17 to 24 will return to full price, unless they qualify for an alternative tertiary or Community Connect concession, under 5s will continue to travel for free on all services. Greater Wellington Transport committee chair Thomas Nash says the change will be felt by young people and whānau across the region, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. “I don’t want to end these concessions – we know they have made a big difference to people,” Cr Nash says.

Thank You, Ten will take audiences on a journey across the catalogue of Footlights shows, performing one musical number from each production the troupe has staged in the last ten years, some in the form in which we know and love, and others with twists you might not expect. Following several challenging years for our communities, Thank You, Ten also aims to celebrate all the joy and support which theatre brings to the lives of so many, and as such Wellington Footlights are excited to be partnering with the Mental Health Foundation for this production, donating $3 from every ticket sold to the charity.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 05/01/2023 - 09:30 - 21:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  84 38ft steel yacht got it's anchor stuck near Makara/Ohau. Whilst manoeuvring to release it they overheated the engine. They were unable to sail due to low wind and inexperience, so ended up drifting south in the strong currents. By the time we got to them they had drifted 10NM into Cook Strait, south of Karori Rock through the Karori Rip. It took us 5hrs to tow them back to Mana, by which point the tide was at it's lowest point. We had to put them on the mooring just outside the bar and then return the passenger back to base, leaving the skipper aboard.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 07/01/2023 - 07:30 - 10:15 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  19 2 people in a small 3.5m dinghy were caught out by a southerly front coming through sooner than expected whilst fishing. They made the decision to abandon the return leg from Mana Island and took shelter on the island, calling Coastguard for assistance. They left their vessel anchored just off shore and swam to the beach where they waited. We nosed up on the gravel beach and picked them up. After ensuring they were in good health and providing them blankets to warm up, we approached the vessel near rocks and hooked the anchor line, pulling it up and out to deeper water. If no appeals are received by 25 September 2020 on the resource consent decision, GWRC will issue the applicant the consent certificates.Recommendation on the Notice of Requirement to UHCC The Committee have made a recommendation that the Notice of Requirement be approved under section 171 of the Act. This recommendation is to the Upper Hutt City as requiring authority. The Upper Hutt City Council will make a decision within the next 30 working days under section 172 of the Act as to whether to accept or reject the recommendation. When that decision has been made, the Upper Hutt City Council must issue a notice of decision to submitters within 15 working days under section 173 of the Act. Submitters who are dissatisfied with this decision may appeal to the Environment Court under s174 of the Act within 15 working days of receiving that decision. This extends from the Pinehaven Reserve to the inlet where the Pinehaven Stream is piped to the Hulls Creek.The purpose of the works is to reduce flood risk from the Pinehaven Stream to the surrounding area. The works will increase the capacity of the stream and its tributaries to a 1 in 25 year return period, reduce risk of injury or harm from flood flows, integrate overland flow paths into the stormwater network, and enable efficient and effective construction and ongoing maintenance of the structures.The proposal includes changes to the Pinehaven Stream channel and crossing structures in the lower reaches to provide for a 25-year channel capacity. (b)    Junior Surf - Sunday is Junior Surf day during the season from October to March.  Preparation for Sunday sessions is essential with a keen eye for detail.  You will need to assemble a ‘sign-in’ team to – 1.    Manage and maintain the Junior sign in sheets; 2.    Undertake second hand clothing sales; 3.    Ensure clothing samples are available; and 4.    Assist with clothing orders when necessary.  5.    Ensure lanes are booked at WRAC for the 200m Badge and Pool Champs. 6.    Manage the 200m badge process. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year.       • Archdiocesan News September 2013 The chapel at St Patrick's College Silverstream was packed on Saturday afternoon 10 August when Fr Dennis Nacorda started his priestly ministry. Archbishop John Dew ordained Fr Dennis for the Archdiocese of Wellington. Quoting Pope Francis at World Youth Day in Brazil in July, Archbishop John invited Fr Dennis to 'Warm the hearts of God's people' with his ministry. Pope Francis had asked the bishops gathered in Rio, 'Can the Church today still "warm the hearts" of its faithful with priests who take the time to listen to their problems?' ... 'We must train ministers capable of warming people’s hearts, of walking with them in the night, of dialoguing with their hopes and disappointments, of mending their brokenness.' Archbishop John said 'Dennis, if you make it your life’s task to “warm the hearts” of God’s people, you will be doing what Jesus asks you to do as his priest and what the church expects of you. 'Those tasks can clearly be done only by “being with” God’s people. 'Just as Jeremiah the Prophet was called, so you are called, too, and the Lord also says to you, “Go now to those to whom I send you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you to protect you.”' Earlier Archbishop John asked Fr Dennis whether he was 'resolved with the help of the Holy Spirit to discharge without fail the office of priesthood  as a conscientious fellow worker with the bishops in caring for the Lord’s flock. 'Are you resolved to celebrate the mysteries of Christ faithfully and religiously for the glory of God and the sanctification of Christ’s people? 'Are you resolved to exercise the ministry of the word worthily and wisely, preaching the Gospel and explaining the Catholic faith? 'Are you resolved to consecrate your life to God for the salvation of his people, and to unite yourself more closely everyday to Christ the High Priest….?' Such questions are part of every ordination ceremony. 'We priests are privileged to do that'. In speaking about Fr Dennis consecrating his life to God, Archbishop John told Fr Dennis he could be of help to God’s people only by uniting himself more closely to Jesus every day. 'Dennis, know that God is always with you and has chosen you for this. 'Think of those questions and as you prepare to answer them do so in the context of “warming hearts”. 'It’s a wonderful expression and says so much more than doing priestly tasks. It’s about getting out there and being with people.' You will 'warm hearts' by, 'discharging without fail the office of priesthood by caring for the Lord’s flock. 'This means being with people in their homes, where they socialise and re-create – we respond to every opportunity to be with parishioners even if we don’t always feel like it. 'You will also “warm hearts” by “celebrating the mysteries of Christ faithfully and religiously for the glory of God and the sanctification of Christ’s people”. 'When you exercise the ministry of the word worthily and wisely, when you preach the Gospel and explain the Catholic faith you will touch hearts. Your love and kindness, your compassion and listening ears will be the way to show people you are interested and care for them…that our priesthood is about them and not about us.' Archbishop John advised Fr Dennis to listen often to the advice in one of the scripture passages he had chosen for his ordination ceremony, the letter to the Ephesians. 'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you the overseer, to feed the Church…. 'Now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace that has the power to build you up. 'Today, we are delighted to commend your priestly ministry to God and his grace, which has the power to build you up,' Archbishop John said. 'Remember, too, that there will be challenges, but listen often to the words of Jesus “Peace be with you". He also says to you “As the Father sent me, so am I sending you".' Fr Dennis will remain in Heretaunga and Stokes Valley until the end of the year.

    • Hope vs Choat
      • Recently in David Choat’s blog he explains that a previous post recalling his observations in his first Capital and Coast DHB meeting led to him receiving a note from Board Chair Dr Virginia Hope (who was recently appointed to both the CCDHB and the Hutt Valley DHB – criticised as a first step towards amalgamation of the two health boards) as a breach of the CCDHB media policy (which effectively says that the Chair should be the person responsible for any comments for the Board) Hope’s explanation is not entirely clear from David’s post, only that it had caused her distress. It would be a fair point to make had Choat attempted to represent the Board exclusively. Yet, if anything, the article reads about what he did and thought at the meeting. I can’t see how what he said would have been any different had Choat been in a public meeting, or in a one-on-one chance meeting with one of his constituents. In fact the post by Choat in question was entitled “Reflections on my first board meeting” Go read the post for Choat’s response, which I think reflects his commitment to transparency with the public on (open) board matters being debated as part of a publicly accountable body. So, what precisely does the policy do – here is a copy (1MB PDF). It was last updated and debated at a meeting in August 2009. The comms manager wasn’t present and Helene Ritchie was the only member to vote against it. Odd. It’s no surprise how unworkable the policy has been in practice. It basically bars any direct interaction with the public by board members. I wonder what kind of world the drafters of this policy were living in when they thought that such restrictions on public debate would actually work. Would it be surprising that Dr Hope doesn’t agree with David’s very blunt but arguably popular slogan “Care not cuts” as a way to deal with the challenges at the CCDHB: “Cuts is really the wrong word. Savings, I think, is a better word” (The Wellingtonian, 6 January 2011) Clearly, any Chair would not want to have to battle the framing of an alternative viewpoint as well as the controversial challenges for an organisation like those faced by the CCDHB, but it also makes me wonder what the Chair’s personal direction will be in the Board’s response to those challenges? Regardless, there appears to be a developing division between the new board member and the new chair. Already, Choat has said that the matter of the media policy will be on the agenda at the next meeting. There doesn’t appear to be much that the Chair could do, but the board (particularly the publically elected members) should be mindful of the public’s need to be informed unfettered by the spin that sometimes happens and refuse to punish Choat. The next meeting is on February 4 at 8.30am (in the Board Room on 11th Floor of the Grace Neill Block, Wellington Regional Hospital on Riddiford Street, Newtown), and you can attend in person to make sure the Board get the point. There is a typo in the sign Thanks, see you soon (Can you spot it? Ask Lucy and she will agree with me!) One thing I did notice was a family who tied their dog up outside while they did their shopping. I wonder if anyone asked the dog what he wanted his life to look like – to be in a loving family but not able to come and go freely, or to live in the wild and not be loved? They are people at the top of their profession, who have everything, who have achieved greatness… and yet, we love to grab a random tabloid, go to the red carpet pages and put their achievements to the test. Fold the page over those cheesy grins and the eyes start to reveal a whole other story. Compromise ─ I hate that word, as a human being and as an artist. Has our idea of happiness superseded our primal need to love and be loved? The Little Dog Laughed by Douglas Carter Beane presents the façade, the make believe world that we all consume, chew over and spit out in fits and starts. But would we have it any other way? In this dark comedy of manners, we watch in horror as four people make their individual choices to be happy. The truth has consequences; but the lies are a living hell. So, do we shut up in order to win? My thanks to the amazing, brave team of The Little Dog Laughed and Downstage Theatre, and a special mention for my long term collaborator Daniel Williams. This is our last project before this beautiful man heads out into the world to go on outrageous adventures. Let’s hope for the theatre in New Zealand that he comes back.
