    • Escape from Mt Crawford Enduro - Cheers!
      • I'ver said it before, but it bears repeating. A massive thanks to our volunteers for helping run the event, and especially David Bevan-Smith and Dave Nendick, our super-medic. A huge chur to the team at the Miramar Track Project for having the trails in such good form, Trails Wellington for the funding to freshen up Jailbrake a few years back, and Con-Air over the past year, and to the team from the Wellington City Council and especially the parks and gardens team for being such good supporters of everything the Welly MTB Club does. Cheers to our spot prize supporters, including Pack and Pedal Porirua, Patagonia, ILABB and Riven Rock MTB Park for the great swag. And finally, thanks to all of you for supporting the event and the club this year. We hope to see you out on the trails soon. Jono Baddiley Wellington MTB Club President

    • Escape from Mt Crawford Enduro results
      • Thanks to everyone that came out on Saturday for the 2023 Escape from Mt Crawford Enduro. We had a great day, and hope that you did as well. By the close of racing, Jesse Cseh was our King of the Cellblock with a on-the-day fastest time of 8:27.16, and Lara Comesky our Queen of the Cellblock in a time of 9:52.66. A frankly surprising number of people put their hands up for the sufferfest climb, many of whom looked like they were regretting their early morning decision making at the top of Jailbrake. The fastest (non-e-bike) up the hill was Jesse in a time of 4:41.31 (only a little over double what many people took to ride down the trail), and fastest woman was Lizzie Varley in a very respectable 7:57.54. Iain Coughlan used boost mode most effectively to make it up the hill in 3:55:35. We've loaded full results onto the Welly MTB Club's WebScorer page. Results for the Felony course can be found here. The stages for each lap are: Conviction Jailbrake Solitary Results for the Misdemeanour course can be found here. The stages for each lap are: Conviction Jailbrake (fastest time) Jailbrake (second-fastest time) Results for the Sufferfest climb can be found here. And I've dug through the timing system and have found the results for the pumptrack challenge, which can be found here. Congratulations to Kiera Vlaar, who did (at least) 10 attempts. I've sorted the results by the fastest time (which shows as the "race time") - it looks like there were some people who took a rather loose interpretation of what "skateboarding" meant, with times that look remarkably like "I'm going to run across the grass between the timing gates"   All of your attempts will appear as laps. Congratulations to Reuben Smith who showed that M50 is where it's at if you want to get consistently fast (and non-cheaty) times. Finally, we've updated the results for the overall in the 2023 Wellington Enduro Series. There are some rather close point totals, and it's all there for you data geeks to trawl through. We'll be arranging an end-of-season shindig, so look out for an update on that soon.

    • Wainui Enduro Race Recap
      • It was great to have so many people come out for a fun day of racing at the 2023 Wainui Enduro yesterday. Results for the hard course are available at the Welly MTB Club's Webscorer account. • Entries open for the Mt Vic Enduro 'n Chill (with Get Lost Cycling)
      • In 2021 the team from Get Lost Cycling welcomed the return of racing to Mt Victoria with the inaugural Mt Vic Enduro. We all had such a great time that they're doing it all again, only better! Wellington is blessed with some of the world's best central city riding and Matairangi is the jewel in the crown. With everything from flowing berms and jumps through to roots and chutes there's something for everyone. We wanted to showcase the hill and trails that we love, so take a deep breath, make yourself comfortable, and relax as you take on a (timed) tour of some of Wellington's finest! The race will be held on the 23rd of April, and entries are available now at the Welly MTB Club events website. All race proceeds are to support the Matairangi Trail Builders and the great work that they do.

      • Entries are now open for the Wainui Enduro, which will be held on the 15th of April. Wainui is one of those trail areas that just works whether it's dry or wet (and let's be honest, it's not been the driest summer so far). We've got a great selection of trails on offer, including hopefully a few options that you haven't seen before. Entries are available now at the Welly MTB Club events page.

    • 2023 Alex Chronis Memorial Award
      • This weekend at the #waimapihienduro we also had the first presentation of the Alex Chronis memorial award.  If we could describe Alex Chronis (or Wombat as he was known by many) in one word it would be impossible. He was an amazing man with as many talents as he had passions, he wore an infectious smile, and always had a good yarn to share that would either leave you laughing or truly amazed. He was a humble person with an honest passion for helping anyone who needed a hand and touched the lives of all the people who knew him. As a Junior National Champion in both XC and DH heralding from Island Bay this prize is support the next outstanding local rider. He passed away a year ago, and with the support of Giro and Worrall's we were honoured to have a lasting memorial of Wombat and what he meant to all of us. The award will be presented at the Waimapihi enduro each year for the most outstanding junior. This years recipient is Noah McLaughlin, who received a Giro Insurgent helmet. We were stoked that Alex‘s family was able to make it along to the presentation. The award will be presented each year to the most outstanding junior competitor. #enduro #wellytracks #alexchronismemorial

    • Alex Chronis Memorial Award
      • Alex Chronis (or Wombat, as he was better known) was a Wellington mountain biker, long-time bike industry stalwart, and fantastically talented rider. As a junior, he held both the junior DH and XC national champion titles. And he was passionate about helping people - there's a story of him taking a sales rep from a competing bike distributor on his rounds to bike shops when the sales rep's car was broken down Alex passed away in his sleep last year, and we've been working with a community of his workmates and friends to establish a lasting memorial of his life. We're proud to announce the Alex Chronis Memorial Prize, which will be awarded to an outstanding junior racer at the Waimapihi Enduro each year. The prize will be available to all Under-19 and younger riders in the hard course, and will have a Giro Insurgent helmet (valued at $699) as a prize. We're really thankful to Giro for their support in this award.
