    • Swimming Wellington All Stars TiD Programme
      • Recently Swimming Wellington have been working on a new initiative for competitive swimmers, registered with Swimming Wellington, and would like to share with our clubs, those selected and to provide further  understanding of the programme, and the selection process for swimmers, for those wishing to work towards selection into the programme in 2016. This email provides a brief overview of the All Stars Development programme and what it entails, for the athletes and coaches that have been selected. We have attached a brief overview of the athlete development pathway within swimming and where this programme sits within the SNZ framework. We hope that this gives a transparent outlook on the selection process. Swimming Wellington’s All Stars Development programme has been selected to be a part of the Wellington City Council Talent ID Programme which is administered by the  Sport Wellington Performance Hub. This partnership allows athletes selected onto the programme to have access to High Performance Sport New Zealand resources. When selecting the swimmers several elements were taken into consideration; age, performance at national events in 2014, and FINA points. The All Stars Development programme is set to work towards developing athletes at a performance level in order to promote a smoother transition into the Power of Black and High Performance environment. The aim is to work with identified athletes on developing core foundation level skills required to train, compete, balancing study with training, family life and peer contact. The project is planned around developing the athlete’s ability out and in the water. This process creates a well-rounded athlete maximising their ability and works towards minimising their weaknesses to reduce impact on performance in the water. This approach allows foundation level skills to be put into place to support the athlete. This will help to give the swimmers the tools required for to maximise their opportunity to successfully continue along the performance pathway. Swimming Wellington’s role in this programme will be the co-ordination and the administration of the programme with the athletes and Coaches.  This role will provide the administration and management of the athletes for services within the programme and aims at supporting the coach to achieve and develop each swimmer within the programme, continuing along the athlete development pathway. WCC TiD programme content This element of the programme is to be delivered by Helen Regan, High Performance Sport New Zealand and the topics will look at skills for swimmers out of the water and provides a holistic approach as swimmers look at developing to enter the performance environment. Helen will also work closely with swimmers and coaches, one-on-one, to ensure swimmer‘s specific goals and skills are focused on their personal development pathway. Funding has been allocated towards a number of sports across the Wellington Region so athletes in the programme will be given the opportunity to interact with other performance level athletes excelling in their sports. Swimming Wellington also aims to take the group of athletes over to the Queensland State Championships in December 2015 where the athletes will be able to put their developed skills, into practice as they are placed in a high pressure unfamiliar environment against unknown competition.  Swimming Wellington has currently got a potential sponsor interested in assisting in funding this part of the programme, however we will keep Club’s informed of progress. All athletes that are selected have performed to the selection criteria standard over the past 12 months.  These 11 athletes have been notified of their selection and confirmed their involvement in the programme and Swimming Wellington would like to congratulate the following swimmers on their selection; Kyle Barnes- Capital Maggie Burns – Capital Scarlett Tacon- Capital Hamish Trlin- Capital Joe Hammond- Capital Josie Kozyniak-  Capital Devlin Forsythe- Karori Alex Pampalone- Karori Bronagh Ryan – Porirua City Aquatics Rebecca Moynihan- Raumati Ruby Health – SwimZone

    • Zonal Wrap up
      • The Harlequins, from Northland, Auckland and Counties-Manukau, took the honours in the second New Zealand Zonal Championships at the West Wave Aquatic Centre in Auckland tonight. The Zonal Championships put 160 of New Zealand’s leading and up and coming swimmers against each other in an American-styled collegiate competition. All regions in New Zealand were divided into four zones to compete in relay formats in two non-stop two hour sessions. Each zone team comprised 40 swimmers split into junior and senior teams. Olympic swimmer Steven Kent helped lead the way for a high spirited Harlequins team tonight, with his winning swim in the 200m freestyle counting for some valuable extra points as each zone nominates a ‘joker’ that can earn double points for their swim. “It was a pretty good event, a mix of everything and people like me doing a mix of events they don’t normally do so it was a lot of fun and to chuck in that Legends Relay there in the middle was pretty awesome,” Kent said. “Two years ago we came last. We didn’t have enough members even last time, so this time to come out and it feels like we dominated a lot of events so it’s pretty awesome to do it for the region. “For me winning the 200m freestyle was pretty cool because I had the joker on me so I had to step up for the team and win that for the team and I guess also for me the Legends Relay was pretty special.” The night concluded with swimmers taking part in a 1,000m freestyle relay for all swimmers in the senior and junior divisions. In the junior relay the South Island Makos managed to hold off the Harlequins who worked their way up from last to second with the help of an impressive leg from Gabrielle Fa’amausili while in the senior relay the Harlequins managed to storm home ahead of the Makos. The Harlequins, which is made up of swimmers from the Northland, Auckland and Counties-Manukau regions, finished well ahead in the points for the night on 1,978 followed by the Makos (1,750.5), Aquaknights (1678) and the All Stars (1646.5). Multiple winners in the senior competition included Emma Robinson in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, Nathan Capp in the 400m and 1500m freestyle, Laura Quilter in the 50m and 100m freestyle, Bradlee Ashby in the 200m and 400m individual medley, George Schroder in the 100m and 200m breaststroke and Helena Gasson in the 100m butterfly, 200m and 400m individual medley. In the juniors picking up two wins each was Bobbi Gichard, Gabrielle Fa’amausili, Satori Dobbie, Tame Govaerts, Yeonsu Lee, Lewis Clareburt and Sam McKenzie while Mya Rasmussen claimed three victories and two New Zealand age group records. Each team is made up of 10 male and 10 female swimmers in the under 16 competition and the same sized teams in the 16 and over competition. The Zonal Championships, also included a charity relay that featured many Olympic and Commonwealth Games swim stars from the past as well as Olympic rowing stars Joseph Sullivan and Juliette Drysdale. The team for Surf Life Saving New Zealand took out the 4x50m freestyle relay, but the star of the night proved to be 97-year-old Kath Johnstone who swam in a team alongside Olympic swimmer Steven Kent.  The teams raised more than $28,000 for their various charities. Final scores: Harlequins 1978, 1; Makos 1750.5, 2; Aquaknights 1678, 3; All Stars 1646.5, 4.
