Church Update – 13/07/18
- Miramar Salvation Army
- Most people like surprises. In fact I reckon that everyone loves surprises – good surprises that is. Surprises that help you feel better about yourself; Surprises that help you feel excited; Surprises where you receive a much wanted gift; Surprises that help you feel loved. I wonder how the people that you have blessed this week are feeling? Perhaps they are feeling surprised. A word of affirmation, a gift, an act of kindness. If you missed the first Sunday in Surprise the World, you can listen here. This Sunday we are looking at the second way that we can live questionable lives – EAT. We will also hear from Jade who is preparing for 6 months mission in Ghana. What an adventure awaits Jade. Let’s support her as much as we can. See you on Sunday. Pastor Dave

- I am very excited to be part of the launch of For Miramar. Last Saturday a wonderful creative bunch of people spent the day making a video, which will have its very first public screening this Sunday, 8 July at 10am. Directed by Hannah, Videoed and edited by Brandon, Musical score written by Kris, supported by our actors who are …. well, you will see who on Sunday. This Sunday we – begin our new series Surprise the World, – launch For Miramar with the first public screening of our For Miramar video, – have the first of our Covenant Lifestyle classes and then – I am heading to Auckland for 3 days of Godly Play Training. I reckon that this Sunday will be a fantastic day not to be missed. And, the service will be an intergenerational service – we want everyone in for the whole time. Our home groups will also be looking at Surprise the World. Later in the e-news you will find details of the home groups. There is a pop up Home Group just for this series. Check this out. It will be happening in our community hub. See you Sunday. Pastor Dave

Church Update – 29/06/18

- Wow – check this out. It’s from Psalm 71:6-8 (TPT) … “It was you who supported me from the day I was born, loving me, helping me through my life’s journey. You’ve made me into a miracle; no wonder I trust you and praise you forever! Many marvel at my success, but I know it is all because of you, my mighty protector! I’m overflowing with your praise for all you’ve done, and your splendor thrills me all day long”. Your splendor thrills me all day long. As I think about renewing my covenant this Sunday and living a Covenanted Lifestyle, my soul does seem to thrill. There is something thoroughly fantastic about being set apart for God, for living in a different dimension, with a different purpose, a different intention, and a different calling. And that does mean we can look and sound and act different. I know! Living like Jesus is …. well … simply thrilling!! This Sunday, Brandon and Jordan will share their story of faith and where soldiership fits for them. See you Sunday. Pastor Dave

- The votes are in. The decision has been made. Commissioner Brian Peddle has been elected as the 21st General of The Salvation Army. You might say who? Good question. Brian is the current Chief of Staff (second in charge). Worth a note … Brian Peddle along with his wife Rosalie, were the Divisional Leaders of our Northern Division some years back. Great that they know something of Aotearoa NZ. This Sunday, our Divisional Leaders Captains David and Denise Daly will be with us as we celebrate Candidates Sunday. “I’m saying yes” is the theme. Perhaps your yes to God’s will for your life will include Officership, or Corps Leadership, or Stepping Stones Pastor or Youth Pastor here at Miramar. What ever that looks like, it starts with a yes. You won’t want to miss the welcome of 5 people who have decided to make this church, their church! OK, we still need help! The Family Store will be open on Queen’s Birthday Monday. This is a fundraiser in our budget. I know, it is a long weekend. I know, you would rather be home eating cucumber sandwiches remembering the Queen on her birthday. But, we need more volunteers to help with this important fundraiser. If you can help, please see Pastor Dave. We are excited that William Johnstone is off to a 6 week boot camp in Christchurch. He is absolutely thrilled and looking forward to this experience. William has been the sound technician at Mainly Music and will be away from 8 June til 20 July. If you can help, or know anyone who would be willing to help for this time, please contact Sherry Cornish. Talking about being away, Trish, Jordan and Shae are in Europe at the moment. A note for your church calendar – we have postponed the next Inn Cafe planned for 9 June. Finally. I called to visit Bep at Kenepuru Hospital. She is bright and positive and happy. As we chatted, she was soaking up sun rays. She says hi and thanks everyone for their visits and prayers. Well done church. All the best to our youth for UNITE this Sunday night. We are so proud of you!! Enough from me. See you Sunday. Pastor Dave

Church Update – 18/05/18
- Miramar Salvation Army
- Tomorrow night two incredible events are happening. Well obviously one is of far more significance to us than the other. What are those events? The first one is Couples Night Out and the second one is the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle. We all love a fairy tale wedding, and we all like happily ever after stories. Like most people in the western world, I wish Harry and Meghan all the very best. I pray that they will be open to God and used by Him to make a difference to His Kingdom as well as to the Commonwealth. Hand on heart, the first event has captured more of my attention than the wedding. I am more invested in the life of my marriage and in the lives of those in our church who are married or in a relationship with another person. I am very excited about tomorrow night and look forward to sharing a fun and informative evening with you… before you go home and watch the wedding of the year! At this stage 26 of us have signed up, and I can’t wait to share with you all some insights to duets and songs. This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. A significant day in the life of the church and my prayer is that it will be a significant event in your life as well. Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with others, to serve, to worship and to respond to God. Stepping Stones and Kids Church will be in full swing. This place will be buzzing on Sunday. Hope you can be a part of it. See you Sunday. Pastor Dave

- Things I learnt whilst collecting at New World Miramar this week … They have Free WiFi You can use free wet wipes to clean the trolley handle before you start shopping You can dispose of your plastic bags for recycling Peter Croft’s favourite fruit is oranges at the de Kids still get a free slice of luncheon at the deli There are 110 white tiles in each section of the floor 1kg of pre-packed lemons cost $4.99 To ensure you have clean hands there is a hand sanitiser in the vege section – on the left One guy from USA has lived here for 3 years and only just discovered we have 10 cent coins There is a guy in Miramar who views shopping as the least favourite thing to do If you forget your grocery bag, you might be able to borrow a boomerang bag. There is a typo in the sign Thanks, see you soon (Can you spot it? Ask Lucy and she will agree with me!) One thing I did notice was a family who tied their dog up outside while they did their shopping. I wonder if anyone asked the dog what he wanted his life to look like – to be in a loving family but not able to come and go freely, or to live in the wild and not be loved? This Sunday we will consider where we find ourselves – how do we measure up with what we want? – and how can we prepare ourselves for what is just ahead of us? See you Sunday. Pastor Dave

- As this day comes to a close, so the school term comes to an end. Holidays for our school teachers and children. Enjoy. We salute your efforts and celebrate some rest days ahead for you. These next few weeks will be an investment in your physical and emotional health as you prepare for the next term. Thank you for all that you are doing. Schools were birthed by the church and here you are, representing Christ as you teach and care for your children. Thinking about investments. Work is still being done on our Couples Night Out on 19 May. This will be an opportunity for couples in our church and community to have a night out together – great food, excellent teaching. If you have a good marriage, then come along and hear about how you can have a great marriage. Bring a friend. It will be like a date night. Watch this space for when registrations open. Another investment in the life of our church is the appointment of Vanessa to our Senior Leadership Team. I am very excited about this. This Sunday you can make another investment in your faith story as we continue our series “I can’t believe in a God who …” This week we look at a God who picked a faulty Bible to communicate with us. Maybe you think the Bible is unreliable or that, even as a historical book, it’s riddled with errors and mistakes. This week, we will see why many of the world’s brightest thinkers have come to trust the scriptures. See you Sunday. Pastor Dave

- I hope you have your seat belts fastened because March is proving to be an action filled month. Hang on ….here we go. It began with us winning the trophy for the Divisional Sports Day. We looked stunning in our tee shirts and played strong and hard and fair. Well done everyone!! We are the champions! This Sunday we continue our series Imagine Heaven – Part 5 Judgement. Next Sunday, March 18th, is Harvest Sunday where we will celebrating our gifts and talents that make us uniquely us. Remember the old fashioned Harvest Sunday with fruit and veges? Well it won’t be like that but we would encourage you to bring along some items of food that would be suitable for our foodbank, or something that you have made which you would like to share. e.g. jam, knitting, greeting cards. Immediately following the Sunday service on March 25th, Lindsay, our Business Administrator will be presenting the Congregational Report for the last financial year 2016/2017 as well as an update on our current financial situation. I believe that it is important for all of us to be fully involved in how we are tracking financially – you might have some great ideas! Easter at The Inn is fast approaching. The date for this is Saturday 24th March – the same weekend as Aotearoa Neighbours Day – perfect timing! Invite your friends! There are a number of activities that will be happening during the cafe and we are needing people to sign up to help. There will be a sign up sheet at the YES desk on Sunday. Thanks for serving our community in this way. Note that set up for Easter at The Inn cafe will be on Friday 23rd at 6pm. Our Positive Parenting Course kicks off this Wednesday night. Thanks Andrea and team for all you are doing to enrich family life and work alongside parents to resource and empower them as they parent their precious children. Hannah has produced a very helpful brochure which outlines the current philosophy for our Stepping Stones programme. Copies of it are available at Stepping Stones over the next few weeks and also from the back table. Phew – told you lots going on. Roll up your sleeves. Plenty of room to serve each other and our community. But …. before we work, we worship! See you on Sunday. Pastor Dave

Church Update – 02/03/18
- Miramar Salvation Army
- If you are planning to come to sports day tomorrow, we are going to have so much fun. We worship together, we serve together, let’s spend tomorrow playing together. I thought it would be helpful to give an update on the Senior Leadership Team. We had our first meeting for the year on Monday 19th February. As a team, we are very excited about what this year could look like as we the church, partner with each other, with God and with our community. Here are a few snippets of what we are looking at … The Triple P parenting course led by Andrea and her team will commence on March 14th. We want to be able to enrich family life and work alongside parents to resource and empower them as they parent their precious children. We have brochures available from the Yes desk. We are investigating holding a 12 month Relationship course so that couples can implement a plan to enrich their relationship. Still in the early stages of how this would look and when we would launch it. Watch this space. Another great way of making a difference in our community. It is important that we update you with our current financial situation as well as present the financial report for the 2016/2017 financial year. We plan to have this sent out with the e-news NEXT week and a presentation with Q & A on SUnday 25th March immediately following the Sunday service. Hannah is stepping down from Stepping Stones and we are currently looking for the right person to coordinate and oversight this vital and growing ministry. We are exploring ways in which we can implement formiramar to support our community. How can the community know that we as a church are for them – to support and encourage what is happening out there? You will be aware that we do not have an employed youth worker at present. We are very grateful for the youth leadership team who are oversighting the youth work whilst we try to find a replacement. The Senior Leadership Team members at the moment are myself, John, Hannah & Betsy. We are prayerfully considering who we would like to ask to join us on the Senior Leadership Team. This person would be a soldier and come onto the team for a fixed term – usually one year. I hope that helps and gives some focus when you are praying for us. Our next SLT meeting is planned for Monday 26 March 2018. Remember tomorrow we win the Divisional Sports Day trophy. Come along and either compete or cheer. A great day out. 10-2pm El Rancho Sports Field This Sunday we continue our series Imagine Heaven. See you on Sunday. Pastor Dave
