Belmont Off-Line
- Wellington VHF Group
- The Belmont repeater site has been shut down. The storm over the weekend of 28/29 June has broken the 11kV power line on the Belmont side of the gully. A small slip on the pylon access road and poor track conditions are hampering access. With another bout of bad weather approaching it may be several days before the slip can be cleared and the line is repaired. Anyone who is willing to help clear the slip should contact Peter ZL3TC on (04) 938 3386 or 021 185 0640. Services will be restored as soon as possible.

Premier v Kapiti - 28/06/08 - W 2-0
- Island Bay United AFC
- Last Saturday we faced Kapiti United, and found that the 1 hour trip away had been reduced to a trip to Whitby as Kapiti Council had closed all their grounds. Despite both teams essentially having an away game, we knew from our last encounter with them that it would be a hard fought game played for the full 90 minutes.

Ten Mad Minutes and the Slapperz go Down
- Karori Slapperz AFC
- An injury-plagued Slapperz journeyed to Petone Memorial 4 to take on the Armani's. With Steve-O and Barts on the sideline nursing aches and pains, we were all hoping for an injury free match. No luck there, I'm afraid, with Gazz limping off after just 1 minute with a nasty looking recurrence of his injury. Fortunately, Striker Barts gallantly came to the rescue and played the remaining 89 minutes up front.

New developments re: the Cobham Park Indoor Courts
- St Mary's Old Girls Netball Club (SMOG)
- Netball Wellington have advised that although everything was moving ahead towards the resource consent process for the development of the new indoor courts at Cobham Park, this is now being reviewed as part of the Council’s Annual Plan process. Andy Foster from the council has questioned the need for 12 courts. He is pushing to revisit the ’sites analysis’ with the idea of 8 courts at the Port (if the land can be obtained) and possibly covering some courts at Hataitai (amongst other possibilities).

In Linz, Austria passers-by watch a monitor inside a canal-tube (above) and are in turn watched by a webcam. Speaker: 26 June 2008 Meeting
- Wellington VHF Group
- Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) are essential safety equipment that can save your life if you get into trouble at sea or on land. When a beacon is activated, Maritime NZ's Rescue Co-ordination Centre receives the satellite information, finds and locates the beacon, and co-ordinates a rescue mission. This month we are very fortunate to have Rodney Bracefield from the Maritime New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre coming to speak to us about EPIRBs and how the related systems work. This promises to be a fascinating evening.

It ain't easy being Green (Cabs)
- The Wellingtonista
- Our favourite cab company has expanded to Auckland and Christchurch and are doing pretty well in both. But it's not all expansion and increasing profits. Recently the eco-friendly cab company has had to defend itself against statements from the head of the Taxi Federation. Mill Creek Wind Farm
- Eye of the Fish
- Mill Creek wind farm is the proposal to build a new wind farm in the Ohariu Valley north west of Wellington, and it borders the other major wind farm project: West Wind, also by Meridian Energy. A self-appointed group of selfish Makara Residents, the “Makara Guardians” led by local Makara resident Jenny Jorgenson tried their hardest to get the West Wind stopped - thankfully they were tossed out in the Environment court. A similar group is also fighting the proposed Mill Creek giant wind turbines, and they’re just as selfish too.

Host a student with EF Foundation
- EF Foundation has exciting opportunities for families to work with us as a volunteer host family for one of our international high school students. The students are aged between 15 and 18. They'll be arriving in NZ in July and they're here for a year. We've got students from Brazil, Germany, Japan, just to name a few countries. We'd love to hear from anyone who's interested, even if they're only able to host for the first couple of months as an arrival family. For more details, or to apply, contact Alyson on 0800 259 433.
