      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 19/06/2019 - 20:00 - 22:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  10 Received a call from the Wellington Harbour Master asking if we could assist them to remove/disable a bird scarer on a moored boat in Onepoto Harbour. The electronic scarer was making a lot of noise on a still night and the local residents asked noise control to get it turned off.  We took the Harbour Master and a Noise Control officer out to the vessel to disable it, with the owner's permission.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 31/05/2020 - 15:00 - 17:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  2 A vessel had been calling for a tow from South of Rock Point, Maritime radio picked up the request and rebroadcast but no other vessels offered to assist and Police called Coastguard. As our crew were arriving at the base another vessel coming in from the North heard the radio call and offered to assist. Police requested that Coastguard confirm that all was ok with the tow so we went out and checked.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Fri, 13/12/2019 - 20:00 - Sat, 14/12/2019 - 23:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  5 Total Volunteer Hours:  162 A 6m runabout ran aground on a sand bank returning from a day of  ski biscuiting and wake boarding in Paremata Harbour (Pautahanui Arm of Porirua Harbour)  at approximately 2:45pm today. Due to the falling tide it had to remain there for the day and we returned the owner back to it at 9pm to retrieve it. We used MR2 to tow it off the sand once the water level was high enough and safely returned to the launching ramp between the bridges. School Boards of Trustees are a central part of New Zealand’s schools. Together the Board and Principal form the leadership team of the school. The Board is a governance body, focussing on the vision and strategic direction of the school while the Principal leads the management of the school, making the operational decisions to implement strategy. Being a school trustee is an important role that needs people with a range of skills and experiences and in order that the Board reflects our community, ideally we want a good balance of gender, ethnicity and skills.  At Wellington High School, the Board of Trustees work to promote the culture and ethos of Wellington High School. We  focus on student achievement and support educational opportunities for all students in our school.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Trustees you should be prepared to make a contribution to the work of the Board, to act as part of a governance team, have the skills to ask the right questions and be prepared to participate in making decisions. Specific skills are not a requirement, however governance experience, financial management and legal skills are useful.  We would like to really encourage people to put their names forward to be nominated for election to our school board.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 20/10/2022 - 20:40 - 22:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  9 Wandering Willy (12-14 m yacht) was trying to enter the lift out dock at the Marina. Yacht made contact with dock and damaged the steering gear, Yacht drifted into the basin and stranded across 2 piles in front of launches. TAR was out for training and was asked to assist. Yacht owner advised we were not operational but could help by using our tow line and placing crew ashore on the whaarf to pull the yacht away and to the wharf. Line was passed to the yacht and to crew on the wharf.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 18/03/2010 - 21:45 - Fri, 19/03/2010 - 00:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 A Wellington couple aged in their 70's are lucky to be alive after their 25 foot yacht hit rocks off Plimmerton Beach near Wellington on Thursday night. The couple phoned Police on 111 from a cell phone at approximately 9.45pm after their boat hit rocks a few hundred metres off shore; losing power and taking on water. The Police, Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Coastguard were all sent to the aid of the couple, who managed to climb into a small dinghy (in choppy conditions) as their boat sank beneath them.     • Swimmers caught in tidal stream in channel
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 09/02/2012 - 16:30 - 16:45 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  1 Two swimmers were caught in the tidal flow exiting the channel into Porirua Harbour on an outgoing tide. This pushed them out of the channel entrance towards Goat Point. The swimmers were spotted waving and screaming for assistance and Coastguard Mana was activated by Police to assist. A training crew was already onboard Trust Porirua Rescue in the marina, engines fired up and ready to depart on a training excercise, when the call came through. They were able to depart immediately and were on scene within 3 minutes of the call from Police.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 04/06/2019 - 07:00 - 09:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  12 A yacht had come from Nelson overnight, hit a storm in Cook Strait and decided to run into Porirua Harbour at night. Tired crew and insufficient local knowledge meant that they did not follow the lights and ran aground several times on the way before sticking on the sandbank outside the Marina on a rising tide with the wind blowing them onto the breakwater. MR1 with 4 crew attended, putting 1 crew on the yacht to assist, towed them to deep water. From there she then motored safely into the breastworks outside Mana Cruising Club. Please let him know if you want to help.  Matairangi Fun Run, 23 February Hataitai Velodrome,  Open to the public, the Matairangi Fun Run, based on Mount Victoria, runs over the iconic Vosseler Shield course. There are two race options: the One Loop Race (5 km); or the Two Loop Race (two 5 km loops, adding up to 10 km). Each loop has approximately 190 metres of elevation. McVilly Shield Relay, 7 March, Karori Park The McVilly Shield is the first club event for the season and a great way to get to know other people in the club. This relay has teams of three people each. Everyone can participate, runners, walkers, J Team, seniors, masters and friends of the club. Just turn up and we will find you a team. You can either race it or use it as an opportunity to do some training.  Each team must do ten laps of Karori Park. No individual team member can do more than four laps. But you can do the laps in any order you like. The race is randomly handicapped after the teams start. Notices Join this week and save $20 or more Join or re-join Wellington Scottish at Round the Bays this year and you get $20 off your new season of Scottish full adult membership (down from $185 to $165).       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/01/2021 - 11:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 7m runabout had steering failure whilst anchored up diving/fishing on the west coast near Boom Rock. They called CG Radio and gave their location as Titahi Bay. MR1 responded and was unable to locate the vessel anywhere in the Titahi Bay area and their phone was out of coverage. Escalated to Police to assist with enquiring about their location (as we had no way of contacting them). Police eventually managed to get a call connected long enough for them to say 4km south of Titahi Bay. We found them 3.6NM (6.6km) south of Titahi Bay and towed them home to Mana Marina.     • Building Update - 1 September 2022
      • We thought we would give you an update about what has happened in regards to our building recently - which in short is not much!As part of our MAP - Taking Flight process we were looking at some options of what could buildings be used for in this parish in the future and I am sure that has sparked some discussion and some ideas that might be floating around. The Brick Building In July, we received a letter from the Council asking us for an engineering report as they had identified that the building was potentially an earthquake risk. In working with the Diocese we provided the engineering report that was done a while ago (which subsequently meant we could not use the building). Therefore you will see on the doors of the building there are now official notices from the council stating the risk of the building's earthquake rating. It also states on it that we have until 2 July 2037 to rectify the situation.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 05/01/2023 - 09:30 - 21:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  84 38ft steel yacht got it's anchor stuck near Makara/Ohau. Whilst manoeuvring to release it they overheated the engine. They were unable to sail due to low wind and inexperience, so ended up drifting south in the strong currents. By the time we got to them they had drifted 10NM into Cook Strait, south of Karori Rock through the Karori Rip. It took us 5hrs to tow them back to Mana, by which point the tide was at it's lowest point. We had to put them on the mooring just outside the bar and then return the passenger back to base, leaving the skipper aboard.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 25/04/2013 - 10:00 - 13:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  30 CRV Trust Porirua Rescue and Pelorus responded to a Police callout for a dismasted yacht 2 miles south of Mana Island.The yacht had gear failure and the mast, boom and mainsail were hanging over the port side.Porirua Rescue passed bolt cutters to the yacht so they could cut away the rigging. On cutting away the rigging an attempt was made to marker buoy the gear with a buoy from Pelorus, this was unsucessful. Once the gear was freed from the yacht she made her own way under power to Mana Marina attended by Porirua Rescue and Pelorus. Harrison Tew® will run specialised training with senior management, our staff and students in the lead up to a lock down exercise, which will occur on Monday 9 April.  The exercise will be as real-life as possible, which will mean that parents/families will receive notification by way of text, WHS app and/or email.  The information passed will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website. In a genuine incident, should you hear of a lock down at the school, can we please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond.  Your presence at, or contact with the school may make it more difficult for us to manage the situation, and could potentially & place your children and in fact yourselves at risk.  What you need to do now Prior to this exercise, please check that your contact details (mobile phone numbers and email & addresses) are current. This will be the information we use to reach you should an emergency occur at the school. You can do this by checking your details through the parent portal [portal.whs.school.nz] and choosing ‘Details’. Download the WHS App today via Google Play store (Android) or iTunes app store (Apple) Reminders: Earthquake / school closure  This is a good time to encourage you to make or review your family plan around other emergencies, such as earthquakes.  You may find ‘How to get ready’ is a helpful resource. This role is two-fold –  (a)    Registrations - manages and responds to registrations.  Coordinates the registration of new and existing members.       Tasks include - 1.    Assist in the organisation of ‘Open Day’ and ensure relevant information and gear is ready. 2.    Liaise with Patricia Kelly to ensure there are no gaps in enrolment and subscription administration with regard to the registration of members. 3.    Coordinate the registration of new and existing members.  Advise Patricia. 4.    Ensure all club members are issued with a Hi-vis vest and Cap (U8’s and above), and a record is maintained. 5.    Ensure relevant information is kept on ‘hard file’ at the office. 6.    Ensure communication databases are current and accurate. 7.    Ensure relevant information is communicated to membership. 8.    Ensure all members are registered with SLSNZ. 9.    Set up google online forms for carnivals, pool champs, oceans, functions, etc 10.   Manage the SLSNZ registrations for carnivals – entering, co-ordination with coaches. 11.   Manage and respond to registrations. (b)    Junior Surf - Sunday is Junior Surf day during the season from October to March.  Preparation for Sunday sessions is essential with a keen eye for detail.  You will need to assemble a ‘sign-in’ team to – 1.    Manage and maintain the Junior sign in sheets; 2.    Undertake second hand clothing sales; 3.    Ensure clothing samples are available; and 4.    Assist with clothing orders when necessary.  5.    Ensure lanes are booked at WRAC for the 200m Badge and Pool Champs. 6.    Manage the 200m badge process. Lifeguards are required to return lifeguard uniforms if they are no longer lifeguarding. ADDITIONAL COST:  Hi-Vis Red Vest $25, Hi-Vis Pink Vest $15 and Competition Beanie $15  All club members are required to purchase and wear a hi-vis vest when training and competing, as these are mandatory.  Athletes will need to purchase a Competition beanie and have a Hi-Vis Red Vest for carnivals, as these are mandatory for competing. - - - - -  U7s don't require to purchase competition beanies as they don't compete in carnivals. U7s can purchase either a Red or Pink Hi-vis vest to wear.  - - - - -  Pink vests can be purchased by clubbies to wear for training, to keep their red vests for Carnivals.   <!-- --> 200M BADGE (must be refreshed every year) 200M BADGE (must be refreshed every year) Keep swimming, Keep swimming . . .  All clubbies should be swimming - we don't teach athletes to swim. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year.       • It’s less than 2 weeks till The Wellington round of the New Zealand International Film Festival Typical Wellington behaviour at this time often includes - Courtenay Place place being full during daylight hours - people taking no lunch breaks to allow for an extra long lunch break to catch a film - taking a day off work to see 4 films in a row - Taking 2 weeks off work to spend the time in a darkened cinema - Catching up with people you only see once a year at film festival - taking mini trips to other Cities just to see films you missed in Wellington - excessive listening to the Rancho Notorious podcast to see what Dan or Kailey think of a film or special watching tips - running between the Paramount and the Embassy to catch a film - eating while standing in line for a film - trying to guess which film will come back when caught in a timetable dilemma   In light of what will be a wonderful 2 weeks in Wellington, here’s our personal tips for what to catch during the festival. Don’t wait for a film to  return, for Video on Demand. nothing beats the big screen and nothing beats a big screen filled with fellow film fans, even worse the returning film might be something edited down for timing or some other stupid reason. Heather C   Aunty and the Star People – inspiring, uplifting and she’s a local. Beauty and the Beast – one of the great original classic fairytales which looks to have amazing detail.. Beloved Sisters – for the emotion and passion of two centuries prior.   Tom Beard REALITi: While NZ doesn’t have a stellar track record for science fiction movies, Chad Taylor and Jonathan King make an intriguing team that should bring dark, literate menace to this existential dystopian thriller. Particle Fever: Themes don’t come much bigger than the nature and fate of the universe, so this documentary about the Large Hadron Collider and the search for the Higgs boson should appeal to more than just physics junkies. Goodbye to Language 3D: Godard infamously said that “a film should have a beginning, a middle and an end but not necessarily in that order”. He continues to throw out the rules, not just for the 3D technology normally reserved for popcorn fodder, but for language itself. Tom Ackroyd Boyhood. Because of the idea of the lead aging from 6 to 18 over the course of the story, and because it’s a Richard Linklater picture. Hard to Be a God. Never heard of the director but the NZIFF write-up is irresistible. Under the Skin. Jonathan Glazer’s long-evolving back catalogue points to him eventually doing something extraordinary and I’m hoping this is it.   Runner-up:  Is the Man Who is Tall Happy? I’m a Michel Gondry nut. He can do no wrong. I actually have a crush on him. Sue Tyler The Tale of The Princess Kaguya – for what is film festival without a Studio Ghibli film National Gallery – behind the scenes at the national gallery, it looks like all the things i crave in a documentary The Lady from Shanghai - I love the old restored films that are brought back every year. I still remember the year Rear Window played at The Embassy and despite having seen that film on video many of times it blew my mind.
