    • This was a weekend SAREX designed to test comms on the South Coast, as well as the ability of the teams to handle the conditions! And with the "10 Year Storm" going on, it was a test. A lot of work had gone in over the week before to get the new cross band repeaters built, as you would have read in Q-Bit. These were installed on Mt Misery on the Saturday morning. The base was set up and the teams dispatched. We did a HF radio test with a Pulsar, and learnt a few things about getting wet. read more

    • There's a Waterfront Development Subcommittee meeting on tomorrow night, and for once, I'm not going to put myself through all that pain. While there's no single development up for specific debate, this time, feedback is due on the entire draft Waterfront Development Plan, so all the interested parties are having their say.Of the 633 written submissions, 604 were about the future of indoor sport given the changes to Sheds 1 and 6; and in particular, most of these called for the ground floor of Site 10 to become the new indoors sports venue, along the lines of what I've also been suggesting.

    • Every second Tuesday lunchtime, Christina Barton, Director of the Adam Art Gallery and co-curator of In Relation: Performance Works by Peter Roche & Linda Buis 1979–1985, will select a performance in the exhibition and read the relevant original notes drafted by the artists or compiled by their most assiduous audience member, the critic and curator Wystan Curnow. Her idea is to bring a live dimension into the gallery as a way of animating the documentation on display and sharing first-hand insights in their unedited form. Each reading will be between 10 and 20 minutes with time for questions after.

The motor stopped and wouldn't restart before they got in the water.  They contacted the national Coastguard Operations Centre who forwarded the details onto us. Mana Rescue 1 headed out and located them drifting near the original location and towed them back to Mana Marina. • • Return of standard Metlink fares for under 25s

    • Fare changes are coming soon for passengers aged 24 and under, following the government’s decision to withdraw funding for age-based concessions. From 1 May 2024, following the rollback of the former government’s age-based concessions on Metlink services: children aged 5 to 16, or older if still at secondary school, will pay half the adult fare, fares for people aged 17 to 24 will return to full price, unless they qualify for an alternative tertiary or Community Connect concession, under 5s will continue to travel for free on all services. Greater Wellington Transport committee chair Thomas Nash says the change will be felt by young people and whānau across the region, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. “I don’t want to end these concessions – we know they have made a big difference to people,” Cr Nash says.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/01/2021 - 11:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 7m runabout had steering failure whilst anchored up diving/fishing on the west coast near Boom Rock. They called CG Radio and gave their location as Titahi Bay. MR1 responded and was unable to locate the vessel anywhere in the Titahi Bay area and their phone was out of coverage. Escalated to Police to assist with enquiring about their location (as we had no way of contacting them). Police eventually managed to get a call connected long enough for them to say 4km south of Titahi Bay. We found them 3.6NM (6.6km) south of Titahi Bay and towed them home to Mana Marina.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 30/04/2011 - 09:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  10 Coastguard Mana spent the day on the water with a crew of volunteers to assist the organisers of the Mana Ocean Race Challenge - a 29km paddle for outrigger canoes, kayaks and surf skis that took them from Mana to Paraparaumu Beach. Conditions on the day started off calm with light southerlies, but the wind built to around 20 knots later in the course creating some more challenging seas conditions for the competitors.     Outstanding success for Rongotai Scientists

    • Rongotai College was the most represented school at the NIWA Science Fair in 2023 which is a feat in itself. It exemplifies our "give it a go" attitude which was on display for the judges and the broader Wellington Community. Science Fair Boys The work presented was the culmination of many months of primary research for boys in Year 9 and some innovative product design from our Year 10 students. Projects presented by Rongotai students were really strong and innovative; as a result, we were not only the largest group attending, but also the most successful! In all, 12 awards were made to Rongotai College projects, with some projects winning multiple awards

• • Missing swimmer at Titahi Bay

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 14/01/2012 - 16:00 - 20:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  40 Coastguard Mana was tasked to search for a missing swimmer at Titahi Bay after a group of swimmers were caught in a rip. Emergency services responded to reports of a group of four swimmers in trouble at about 4pm. Most of the group were rescued but one was still unaccounted for. CRV Trust Porirua Rescue has been searching in conjunction with Westpac Rescue and Titahi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club since 1700, while CRV Pelorus had to turn back due to severe sea conditions. TPR returned to base at 2030 and will resume the search early on Sunday morning. • • Southerly Storm Mooring Lines

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 13/07/2017 - 12:15 - 15:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 Day 2 of a major southerly storm in Wellington took it's toll on vessels moored in the channel. We initially received a callout from Police to assist a 15m catamaran who's mooring lines had broken in the main channel. Police ended up putting their own small boat in the water and assisted him. Coastguard Mana then continued on and assessed other moored vessels, finding 2 with broken bow lines. One large launch had a secondary line that was holding the vessel on the mooring, but it was very small so we added a new line to it to hold in the 50kt+ wind gusts. This enables them to perform to their full potential in exams. We have over sixty senior students who receive SAC. The school receives no funding to employ reader writers.  NZQA pays for reader/writers for externals only. At exam times it is very difficult to cater for the high numbers and we are looking for volunteers to help us out. Morning exams begin at 9am and the afternoon session starts at 1.20 pm. They can vary between 1.5 – 3 hours.   You do not need to know the subject but have equivalent to High School Literacy and have legible writing.  You will not be placed with a student you know. Staff Success  Michaela Manley, science, music and Year 10 roopu teacher, is a finalist in the Aotearoa Category of World of Wearable Arts with a dress made of inner tubes that have been recycled.  We are all looking forward to seeing her creation on display.     • Kiwis are terrible drivers. Over the holidays, the news has been full of the consequences of our bad driving habits as the dead and maimed piled up across the country. Largely these victims were the consequences of basic driving errors – speeding, badly-judged overtaking moves, hit-and-run crashes, drinking and driving, and failing to put on a seat belt. We kill ourselves on the road at more than twice the rate of the UK and rank as one of the worst performers for road deaths in the OECD. And we’re no better around Wellington’s narrow streets, which is why the much-maligned “spy car” is such an essential tool. In the Wellington region, road deaths and injuries rose 10% last year, bucking the national trend.

    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Mon, 22/10/2012 - 12:35 - 15:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  17 Crew paged to assist recovering a yacht that had broken off the swing moorings at Onepoto Harbour and was on the rocks at Whitford Brown.  Initially delayed in starting job due to windsurf sail down job. Harbour Ranger Grant Nalder was taken out with the crew in Pelorus to assist with ascertaining any damage to the yacht prior to towing off the rocks.  Yacht was towed to the beach area at Onepoto for later recovery by the owner.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 22/10/2013 - 19:30 - 20:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  14 Following the successful rescue of a windsurfer that had been in the cold water near Tokaapapa Reef for over an hour, Pelorus and Trust Porirua Rescue were redeployed to assist in searching for and recovering his board. It had been left behind so that he could be transported quickly to awaiting paramedics for checks at Mana Cruising Club. The board was successfully loacated and recovered back to base.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 22/10/2013 - 18:45 - 19:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  6 A windsurfer who had been out with a group failed to return and was drifting in the water near Tokaapapa Reef unable to get back on his board or make way. TPR was deployed and recovered him just on dusk and returned him to Mana base for a checkup by paramedics. He had been in the water for over an hour. Pelorus and TPR returned to the scene to recover his board later. Contact made with Police SAR doing area observations and a parallel track and directed trackline search assisted in locating a "fishng kayak" look-a-like log. The job shows the importance of  reports from the public and that usingt 111 to report when concerned for someone's safety is always a good thing to do.
