Help shape better bus and bike trips from Newtown to the city
- Wellington City Council
- Plans to make it safer, easier and quicker to bus or bike around the city are among ways we are responding and working with the community to make those bigger changes possible. The Council approved the routes for Paneke Pōneke, a 10-year citywide bike network plan, in March this year. It had previously agreed work between Newtown and the city, and Botanic Garden ki Paekākā and the city, should be prioritised as part of a transitional rapid roll-out.

Paneke Pōneke approved
- Cycle Wellington
- Yesterday, our City Councillors voted strongly in favour of approving Paneke Pōneke, a network of bike lanes that will serve most Wellington suburbs. This is a huge step forward for Wellington. During the meeting, the network grew by 19kms to cover 166kms. Within 5 years we will be riding the network, built to a transitional level, like has been achieved on Brooklyn Hill.

Bike network plan | Projects - WCC Transport Projects
- Creating a citywide network of connected bike and scooter routes in tandem with walking improvements and big public transport changes will make that possible. This is an ambitious plan. We must act swiftly to change how we move around to reduce the city’s carbon emissions and get the network completed in 10 years. To help us get there, we’ll be making interim improvements where we can, using lower-cost materials and involving local communities. The bike network plan includes finishing Tahitai, the walking and biking connection around Evans Bay between Miramar and the central city, and The Parade upgrade in Island Bay.
