      • Orchestra Wellington presents RITE OF SPRING Two works that changed the course of musical history SATURDAY DECEMBER 2, 7:30PM MICHAEL FOWLER CENTRE, WELLINGTON Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No 3 in E-flat Major, Op 55 “Eroica” Igor Stravinsky The Rite of Spring Marc Taddei, Conductor Orchestra Wellington’s 2017 season goes out with a bang, in a concert combining two of the greatest pieces of music ever written, conducted by music director Marc Taddei. First, Beethoven’s mighty Eroica Symphony features on Saturday 2nd December at the Michael Fowler Centre.  At the other end of the concert, the orchestra is performing the one work which can top Beethoven’s in terms of its impact, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. “I’m extraordinarily excited to present the defining works of the 19th and 20th century for our grand finale concert,” says conductor Marc Taddei. “Music would never be the same after the Eroica and The Rite of Spring. The sense of drive, power and rhythmic impulse connect these two monuments of Western civilisation.” Beethoven’s Eroica caused a sensation when it was first performed in 1803, a hundred years later, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring started a riot. Beethoven demanded the orchestra play a series of discords so shocking to audiences, many of them thought he had gone mad. No longer was music just for aristocrats, or the church, with the Eroica symphony, Beethoven created something to take on the world. The crowning work of his triad of ballet masterpieces, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, about a girl chosen to dance herself to death in a pagan sacrifice, sounds as fresh now, as it did a century ago. Paris audiences knew to expect the unexpected from Diagilev’s Ballets Russes, but the Rite was beyond anything they had imagined. With exotically primitive melodies, irregular rhythms and brutal harmonies, the orchestra is pushed to its technical limits. And despite the modern rhythms and harmonies, audiences find Stravinky’s music irresistible. The tentative, questioning woodwind fragments that open the work, the brutal asymmetric stomping rhythms of the first dance, the deep, grinding harmonies that seemed to come from the earth itself, and the virtuosic sacrificial dance at the end: all combine to make a music more carnal, primitive and instinctive than any ballet before. Now the Rite of Spring is one of the most popular ballets ever, and always a sensation whenever it is performed. This is Orchestra Wellington’s biggest concert of the year, and it also marks the full launch of its 2018 season.       • Hurray, another guest post from Heather at Foodie Gems of Wellie Where to go in the city for a quality chocolate fix between usual excuses – chocolate festivals, Valentines, Easter, Xmas, national chocolate day, your birthday, your best friend’s birthday, White Day in Japan, Chocolate Dipped Fruit and Fondue day in the US (hmmm, any others?)? Follow me, and know that the calories will go straight out the bottom of your legs if walking… Start at Bohemein Fresh Chocolates, 109 Featherston Street (unless it’s Sunday and then start at the Esque stand at the City Market in the Chaffers Building).  A two-bite sensory experience of fresh ingredients, no preservatives, and interesting flavours.  To be eaten within 2-3 weeks if you take some away and can hold out that long. Try the award-winning Sea Salt Caramel. Call past Kirkaldie and Stain’s gourmet shop to pick up your favourite Schoc tablet.  The Xmasy Frankincense, Myrrh and Gold is all go again. Pop into The Chocolate Cake Company in Capital on the [Lambton] Quay (a mouthful in more ways than one!) to order a take-home dense and delicious chocolate mud cake for sharing.  To appease the guilt of hogging out all day by yourself.  Unless its Sunday, and then order online once home and you’ve licked away any telltale chocolate moustache. The next stop should be Tempt Cupcakes in the Old Bank Arcade (front corner of Smiths The Grocer) to see if you can resist a Chocolate Caramel or Traditional Moist Chocolate Cake creation.  Just beautiful to behold. As you stroll up Willis Street, stop by Butlers Chocolates near the Manners corner.  Whilst not a local producer, they offer some nicely packaged goodies for Xmas stockings, and have a delightfully sunny afternoon upstairs balcony for a wee chocolatey rest if required. For the regularly-voted best hot chocolate in the city, proceed to Scopa on the corner of Cuba and Ghuznee Streets.  One of those experiences that just simply should be on your bucket list.  Although the shot size is very cute, go for the regular at least.  If you’re gonna do it, do it thoroughly. I’d suggest a sit down in a dark quiet room by about now, so loop around to lower Taranaki Street and Hashigo Zake (downstairs below Zibibbo), and order up a Rogue Chocolate Stout.  And if you’re hungry, one of Hashigo Zake’s famed gourmet pies to go with it. And for a dessert finale, uplift your stomach and meander along to Matterhorn opposite the bucket fountain in Cuba Street, and order up the Eight Textures of Chocolate ‘Thai Style’.  A clever and delicious finish. From here there are a range of buses and taxis nearby, who will take your chocolate-satisfied self wherever you need to go….

After 2 cancelled flights she finally got off the ground in Wellington only to be turned back after not being able to land in Tauranga. Plan D was to jump in the car and Super Dad, Glenn, drove through the night to deliver her on the start line just in time. Peer Supporters are specially trained SLSNZ members who can provide confidential support to their fellow members on a range of issues including wellbeing concerns, personal stress, and traumatic lifesaving incidents.  Peer Supporters can also connect Maranui members with the Benestar programme. All current active members and their immediate families have access to FREE counselling and wellbeing support through Benestar. This advent many people in our congregation are going to either walk or run 145 km's, and you are very welcome to join the challenge. It may surprise you to know that walking is considered an ancient spiritual practice for many people, in fact walking is mentioned 247 times in the bible. In proverbs 14:15 it tells us that “the prudent give thought to their steps” We have created a booklet in which people can record their daily km traveled. After the successful and fun afterwork series—and before you check out for the holidays—we are putting on a training session focussing on compass skills. The training will occur on Kaukau, at 6—7pm Wednesday, 17 December. Our session is aimed at those wanting to learn new skills and techniques, or those with more experience who want to practise their techniques, and is suitable for every ability (kids and adults welcome!). Bring your compass and clothes suitable for the weather, as it can be exposed on the tops. No dogs are allowed on the farmland. The session will be coached by Rachel and Yvette Baker, so please email Rachel at rachel.rosara.baker@gmail.com if you have any questions, or need to borrow a compass. The Endeavour Cup is awarded for development and performance, and the Fortune Cup is awarded for outstanding service to the club. Endeavour Cup Rachel Baker received this year’s Endeavour Cup for her outstanding performances including as part of the New Zealand team at this year’s Junior World Orienteering Championships in Italy. Other nominees were Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan. Fortune Cup Alan Horn received the Fortune Cup. Alan unfailingly provides outstanding support for events, gear, and controlling and planning. Other nominees were Paul Teesdale-Spittle, Helen Hughes, Lachlan McKenzie and Will Vale. Members’ League We will be trialling a members’ league in 2026—a way to introduce some fun competition into events where scores are based on comparative performance, rather than absolute as per race time. Details are being worked through but generally will look like this: For members age 16 or over who run a Red-level course CSWs and OYs will be ‘counting events’ Scores will be allocated based on the formula “Average km rate * (age and gender weighting)” Overall winner: If there are 10 ‘counting events’, we will take your top 6 scores. Tell us about where you came from to join OBU? Played at Wellington college and a few lads went to obu. I went back to my junior club Wellington club. 2002-03 played 21s then press as they were on the way out. 04 headed over to obu as I knew a few players there already.         What is your favourite on-field memory?   2015 jubilee cup final. Never thought I would play a JC final. We had a dam good team       What is your favourite off-field memory?   Courtys at Boyd Wilson followed by the interesting walks back down to the Cambridge.       Are you involved in rugby these days? Tell us about it. After the 2017 season I felt burnt out and needed a break from rugby. I started going to watch games I’d never seen before like Norths v Ories, HOBM v MSP. That was enjoyable. Then in 2019 I thought I would go and play down the road from home at Paremata-Plimmerton. My brother in-law James “Smokey” Corcoran has played there as well for the last few years. knowing a few other players also made it easy to don the boots again. Now in my second year and I’m still playing premier. I have a few small niggles hanging around, and I’m just managing these as they pop up. I really enjoy looking on at some of our young front rowers whilst on the side lines and helping the next generation of players here that might not get that position specific detail that I had at OBU. Filming line out throwing and adding my 2 cents in where available helps these guys out. Who knows what next year will bring playing wise. I’ll make up my mind when preseason rolls around if my calf’s hold strong or id they wilt!         What’s life like after OBU? Where are you these days? Work, family. Family wise my wife Hayley and I have got two kids Blake 5 and Zara 3. As for work – I’m in partnership with Hayley’s parents in Exceed doors and window maintenance, a franchise in the Hutt valley. Within the next couple of years we will take over and become the full owners. Life after OBU is pretty much the same as before. Just a different color jersey on Saturday! I left straight from Wellington College to OBU. My good mate Seminar Manu (also a Hundy Club member, a profile on him coming up soon hopefully), convinced me to come across to OBU. I was supposed to be going to Poneke with my brother Dave but my brother eventually came over to OBU and played a season or two around 2008-09. What’s your favourite on-field memory? My personal favourite on-field memory had to be when I scored 4 tries against HOBM. I had a career-ending injury that forced retirement later that season. Another great team on-field memory is definitely the Jubilee Cup wins!! The 2017 OBU team was the best club team I’ve ever played in. Another great memory was the 2015 Jubilee Cup win – this win was really important to me personally and emotionally because of the death of our OBU manager and my good mate Richard ‘Puds’ Newsome the year before. He always kept in touch with me and one of the things he said was you will come back to OBU from Norths and win a Jubilee Cup. To fulfil that vision, was one of the main reasons I came back to OBU and I’m stoked we managed to achieve that, not only to make history that year but also knowing he would have been having a few wets that night watching over us and celebrating. Who was your best coach? I have been coached by some great coaches over the years but the best has been Jamie Williams, our current premier coach. He definitely had a huge impact on my form and to still keep me performing at a high level. He definitely knows the game inside and out and this shows in the results he has achieved with the club since he came into OBU. Who were some of those other coaches? Jake White coached the Tongan team on our 2016 tour to Europe. He was a great coach and was great at keeping the boys engaged by making the video analysis sessions short and using as much Tongan language as he could to keep the players engaged. Jamie Joseph coached me with the Wellington Lions 2008. Chris Boyd with the Wellington Lions & also coached me for Tonga in the 2011 World Cup, when we beat France at the Stadium in Wellington. We knew the crowd would be on our side and they were in full red Tongan attire! Definitely a career highlight for me playing in front of a home crowd (along with family and friends) at the cake tin, while representing my country of origin. I was also coached by John Plumtree at the Wellington Academy during my first year out of college. What’s your favourite off-field memory? The court sessions stand out with some fun times. Also the Jubilee cup after-parties, as well as some mighty nights at the Cambridge including the annual Mr OBU pageant. Are you involved in rugby these days?. I retired from playing in the middle of the 2018 season, upon medical advice of a prolapsed disc in my neck which caused me to end my rugby career abruptly.  I started coaching the Queen Margaret’s College 7’s team. The following year we made the national secondary schools 7’s tournament that was hosted in Auckland at King’s college. This was a big achievement for the first ever 7’s team in QMC to qualify for nationals, also a blessing as it was the start of my coaching career. Currently I’m now Director of Rugby for OBU. This includes being the Academy Director of the OBU Academy for male and female university students who play for our club. I helped coach the Premier Men’s team last year and I’ve also completed my World Rugby Level 1 and 2 for Coaching and am working on my Level 3 this year. I also volunteer as an assistant coach for the Colts Black team with Norman Ferguson this year, which is fun and keeps me developing my skills as a coach. Also learning the challenges that all coach’s face, and the many hats they have to wear but I enjoy it with a passion! Any messages of inspiration you want to pass back to the Goat community? Join in and get amongst the Goat herd, and enjoy your playing time!! Once you’ve finished, stay connected, stay involved, because without people we have no community and no club.       • Government Funds Licence Scheme for Youth April 10, 2019 Partners Porirua was proud to host the official launch of the Youth Driver Licence Scheme announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni and Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter. The scheme, funded by the NZTA Community Road Safety Fund and the Ministry of Social Development, beginning 1 June 2019, will enable young people on benefits or in care to access free driving lessons and tests.   “A driver licence is more than just a licence to drive. It’s a vital tool and opens doors to education and jobs.,” said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. This is exciting news for Partners Porirua as a Youth Service provider, running its own Drive 4 Life programme since 2007.  Partners Porirua also facilitate a Community Driver Mentor Programme enabling disadvantaged youth to practise their driving skills with fully licensed adult driving mentors. “The announcement means Partners Porirua can assist more of our most vulnerable young people to get their driver licence, and increase their employment prospects and independence,” said Executive Director Michelle Robinson.     • 18/8 College Sport activities will not proceed this weekend
      • Dear Newlands College Sports Community Below is a statement from College Sport today (18/8) about their decision regarding sporting activities for this weekend and the future: Dear students, staff, family members, partners and supporters of College Sport Wellington, Following yesterday’s Government announcement and Wellington’s elevation to Alert Level 4, the team at College Sport Wellington have been working hard to consider various scenarios and contingencies for the weeks ahead.  Clearly this is a very fluid situation and we will need to take one step at a time.  In addition to the Government’s ongoing updates, we naturally need to factor in the upcoming Winter Tournament Week and School Sport New Zealand’s decisions around that.  We believe that at the end of this initial three-day lockdown (due to expire Friday night) we will have a clearer picture on both fronts. At the same time, we very much appreciate the tight turnaround if even in the best case scenario, Wellington’s Alert Level is reduced for the weekend.  Even at Alert Level Two, schools and council facilities will need to have a number of measures in place with no preparation given the current Alert Level Four lockdown.  On that basis, and in line with a number of club sports, we have made the decision that no College Sport Wellington competitions will proceed this weekend – regardless of the Alert Level setting. Whether the games originally scheduled between today and Sunday are treated as ‘postponed’ or ‘cancelled’ will be determined following Friday’s announcements.  At that point we hope that the shape of the next few weeks will become clearer.  Our next stakeholder update will then follow in due course.     • Making Masterton Dreams Realty
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > On Wednesday 28 June a spirited group of Masterton people came together for an open community meeting at Te Patukituki (the former Greenworld with its beautiful wooden open ceiling), 15 Queen Street to hatch connections and ideas for the pilot Urban Dream Brokerage in Masterton. It was time for many introductions, percolating ideas and wishes, plus an impromptu display from Heather Bannister of some beautiful vintage sewing machines -  which she has schemes (with at least 100 she says in her collection!) to see not only on display, but in use by young and old. It was a pretty remarkable group of about 20 representing a diversity of the community: young and old, Maori and Pakeha, newcomers to the region hungry for initiatives and older timers with a lot of history to share. Even those who professed to not being creative expressed interests that suggested they had plenty to bring. Jade Waetford of Te Patukituki opened the hui. Te Patukituki is a fledgling community and carving space with some beautiful vision for enabling more young and Maori to feel part of the Masterton CBD, run here in this special space with the support of the Masterton Lands Trust. We’re really looking forward to working with them in partnership to see more community life in this special northern end of the CBD.  Things are seeding in Masterton. Our call out to all in the community is to think about what causes they’d like to further, collections they know of in backrooms and garages that deserve wider exposure, or ideas for the CBD they could trial (be it an event in open space or project in a vacant space). What ideas could be brought to life that demonstrate some different aspects of this town? THE MESSENGER The most recent St John’s Messenger newsletter reviews some recent events, and looks ahead to what is next. <a href="https://www.stjohnsinthecity.org.nz/news/october-messenger" class="sqs-block-button-element--medium sqs-button-element--primary sqs-block-button-element" > The Messenger Newsletter   RAISING THE STANDARD OF GIVING Last week, we highlighted the slides from the AGM about the church finances. <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/s9vqtz7wnuqaegp/AGM%20Finances%2030th%20October%202022%20slides.pdf?dl=0" class="sqs-block-button-element--medium sqs-button-element--primary sqs-block-button-element" > Slides from the AGM These show that we are continuing to navigate a difficult financial environment with multiple pressures. Even though St John’s achieved an “accounting surplus” for 2021/22, a large deficit of $400,000 is budgeted for 2022/23. This arises because of:• The need to inflation protect the Trust Fund – high inflation and low returns means very limited real returns are expected this year• Insurance costs are $176,000 (plus GST) for the year – a $20,000 increase on last year and a 50% increase over the last 3 years• Repairs and maintenance – painting the manse, washing the buildings on the St John’s site, and the repair of the Church reception roof have added to costs this year• Higher salaries arising from market demand and the intention to fill the youth and children’s ministry vacancies• A significant decline in annual congregational giving of about $60,000 compared with 2018.Some of these challenges, such as insurance, will require a regional or national approach, as other Churches are facing similar cost challenges. And some of these challenges are ours. Giving should be a joy that reflects our faith and enables our worship, ministry, mission and outreach. Jesus talked about money a lot. At least a third of his teaching was about money and property related matters – the incidents of the rich young ruler and the widow’s mite are forthright in their implications. Jesus did this because he knew that many of those he spoke to considered money more important than the Kingdom of God. Let’s prayerfully re-examine our giving as an important expression of our faith and rise to the challenge of an additional $20,000 a year over the next three years. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " >   ONE CONFERENCE We are excited to have over 240 participants registered for the One Conference here at St John's in the City November 17-19. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > You have the opportunity to attend any of the four main sessions of the conference for just $5 per session. The theme for the evening will be a youth-led Code Breaker night.We started off the year with a picnic in the park, and we are going to finish off with a picnic in the hall. We invite you to bring your own meal to our final celebration.This will be our LAST whānau night of 2022. And in order to continue whānau nights in 2023, we are looking for a committed leader to help orchestrate and organise teams, as Gordon Fitch is stepping down from this role. Conditions There was a strong crosswind blowing from the new clubrooms across the field to the North. There was the usual low-sun for this time of year to contend with for both teams. OBU played from right to left as we viewed from the clubrooms side. A couple of changes to the run-on team announced on the Club Rugby website. Taine Plumtree was out with a minor injury. Same Godwin gets a start. Josh Thomas, in his premier debut, was wearing the 22 Jersey and Tiaki Fabish switched to 21 pushing Matt Sleith to 20 (I think). Notable Performances Shamus can’t seem to keep his name off the scoresheet this season. Another 3 tries for him taking him to joint top of the try-scoring leader board in Wellington club rugby! Sam Reid had another solid game at centre and picked up a brace of tries. The Waimea wanderer, Caleb Delaney, notched a couple of tries and was a powerhouse around the field in the set-piece and loose play. Matt Fowler played a full match and claimed to be even more shattered than he looked at the end. Nevertheless, he was into everything from sniping runs around the phase plays to mighty defensive covering tackles. The whole front row was on fire especially with the ball in hand, Kenan Gillson taking the reward of a try on behalf of the engine room. Special mention for late replacement Sam Godwin who started in Taine’s place and got on the scoreboard early on with a well-taken try. A typically abrasive performance from Sam! How the Game Unfolded Minute What happened Score 1 Min OBU run it back strongly from the kickoff but get penalised for holding on 5 Mins OBU worked into the Avalon 22 but get penalised for offside in the backs. Avalon takes the quick tap and hit it up with one-off ball runners. But the OBU defence is strong and they don’t really go anywhere eventually knocking it on for an OBU scrum. 7 Mins Shamus takes it off the back of a solid scrum. There is some great inter-passing between the forwards and inside backs. Eventually, it is turned over and kicked out. 9 Mins From the lineout, it is taken up the middle. Reece crashes in through the centres. Avalon is penalised for offside. OBU elect to take the scrum. 10 Mins Shamus makes another strong run off the back of the scrum and is under extreme pressure but somehow manages to keep going forward. Avalon infringes at the ruck. 12 Mins Callum crashes over about 8m from the left-hand touch. The conversion just misses floating directly over the top of the right hand upright. Unlucky! OBU 5-0 18 Mins There is a series of pick and go’s at the try line by OBU. Eventually, Sam Godwin breaks the deadlock to score it near the sticks. Conversion is successful. OBU 12-0 23 Mins After 6 or so phases near the Avalon line, Shamus takes the ball back around to the left and scores it. Conversion is successful. OBU 19-0 29 Mins Some nice play by the OBU backs. Dale drops a little inside pass to Sam Reid who crashes over the top in the tackle to score. OBU 26-0 34 Mins Disallowed try after a foot in touch! It started from a great run inside the OBU 22. Olly got the pass from Reece to run it in, but out! 39 Mins There is a long-range try finished off by Shamus. Conversion misses. OBU 31-0 Halftime 41 Mins Starts off with OBU on a long period of attack with Avalon holding on well. Eventually, the pressure becomes too much and Shamus sneaks it in under the sticks. Conversion is successful. OBU 38-0 44 Mins There is a series of great offloads in the centre of the pitch has the Avalon defence at 6s and 7s. Ty Poe gets the try under the sticks. The conversion is successful. OBU 45-0 47 Mins OBU forwards mount a drive at the line which is then spun to the left. Sam Reid crashes over the line. Conversion is successful. OBU 52-0 48 Mins Josh Thomas takes the field along with Izzy Foai for his premier debut. Congratulations Josh. 55 Mins Kenan Gillson carries the ball strongly into the 22 and it is then recycled a few times from the ruck. Eventually, Kenan takes the reward for his endeavours to score in the corner. Dale lands a tough kick back upwind to register the conversion. OBU 59-0 56 Mins Fui, Kenan and Shamus are subbed off. 60 Mins Caleb Delaney gets a well-deserved try after the ball is moved into open spaces in the middle of the pitch OBU 66-0 65 Mins A few changes and a lapse in concentration allows Avalon to crash over in a pick and go on the OBU line. Conversion misses. OBU 66-5 70 Mins There is a lineout drive and OBU score the try. I couldn’t see who scored it but by subtraction, it must have been Caleb Delaney again(Waimea College forever)! The conversion was successful. OBU 73-5 79 Mins Reece juggles the pass initially but gets it off to Tiaki Fabish who scores it. The conversion was unsuccessful! That’s the final score!     • NUHC Patron Rex Manning has passed away
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Rex Manning in 2018 Longtime player, president and patron of Northern United, Rex Manning, passed away at the age of 91. A service was held for Rex on Saturday, 1 June at 2:00pm, and many club members past and present attended, including the whole NUHC committee. Rex joined Wellington Tech Old Boys hockey club in 1944 when he left college. Two years later, while still a teenager, he was made club delegate to the Wellington Hockey Association. It only took Rex two years to join the Senior team, where he played for 17 years, with 7 as captain. The highlight was the legendary 1950 team, which won the senior championship for the first time (shared with Karori) – and the only time in the first 50 years of the club history. That was back in the days when, in Rex’s words, “We didn’t warm up or stretch or anything, just had a few hits before we ran on. And lemons, not water, at half time.” Tech Old Boys later became Northern United, where Rex served as team captain, selector, coach, club captain, president and patron. Rex never just played the game; he was always helping run the organisations that allowed everyone else to also play the game he loved. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > President’s message from the 50th Jubilee booklet, 1980 When Rex retired from playing, he immediately switched to umpiring, coaching, and drawmaster/ umpires appointee for WHA. His son Bruce recalls a typical Saturday morning in the Manning household in the 1960s: <blockquote data-animation-role="quote" > “Dad would have already done the draw on Tuesday, so it could be put into the paper on Thursday; then at some ungodly hour of Saturday morning, if it was raining, the phone would start ringing. If grounds were closed, he would have to rearrange the draw, ring the radio station to broadcast cancellations and game changes, and ring the umpires to tell them their new games. Then it was up and off to coach the junior team Ross and I played in. Back for lunch and more phone calls – he was always on the phone – then off for his two games as umpire (at 1:15 and 3 pm), and we would all meet up at the clubrooms at Alex Moore park to socialise and hear team results. Repeat the next week...” — Bruce Manning Not surprising, then, that the 50th Jubilee booklet (1980) recorded this little fact: <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > This involvement over a long time saw Rex receive the 1992 Club Administrator of the Year award from the Johnsonville Sports Association. From 1986-2010, Rex was involved in the Foundation for the National Hockey Stadium, doing the turf timetabling, chairing the Trust Board, running the Pavilion and fixing the goals. On one occasion he tried to convince a lawn bowls player that they should hire the turf for special bowling events. The man said “you’ll never get bowlers playing on turf, it just won’t happen” – Rex remembered this every time he passes an artificial turf at a lawn bowls club. Along with another Northern Club member, Ken Wood, Rex was instrumental in the fundraising and installation of the Maidstone Park and Elsdon turfs, the bowling clubs have had to put their own turfs in. Rex’s continual presence in the pavilion was handy for many teams, when they had no umpire. Rex filled in as an umpire until he was almost 80! Rex continued to attend committee meetings and was still at the turf at the weekends, watching a new generation of Northern United hockey players. Rex served as patron of the Northern United Hockey Club, of which he was also a Life Member.He was also a Life Member of the Wellington Hockey Association. He was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to hockey in 2000. In 2012 he received a Hockey New Zealand Gold Award. These accolades however, barely recognise Rex’s over 70 years service to hockey. Rex will be sorely missed by his family, friends and all of the Wellington hockey community.       •  Message from the Principal “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way …” I’m sure many of you will recognise these beautiful words from “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens and you will probably know why I am starting my message with this quote. We are in uncertain times, there is hope and there is despair and the despair seems to be outweighing the hope at the moment. Unfortunately, negotiations with the government are not going well and disruption is occurring in our schools. This is not what any of us want but these are the times we are living in. The current government has inherited 9 years of neglect and they obviously cannot rectify this immediately but their intransigence on various aspects of the negotiations is reprehensible. Education is a fundamental right and governments should be nurturing and cultivating the best teaching workforce so that we can have the best education system. The government should be leading the conversations about the best ways to do this but they are not. The key ingredient here, as I’m sure you know, are the teachers who are in front of our young people every day. We, as a society, have to decide whether we value those people or not. We have to decide whether we want the best people caring, supporting and inspiring our young people or not. Thank you for your support during these times and we will need it in the weeks ahead. I am sad to announce that Eric Tan has left us today to return to his home country of Singapore. Eric worked with us for 3 years in the Science department and made quite an impression with his calm, relational manner, his thorough planning and the cleanest Science labs you will ever see! We have already welcomed Dylan Weatherley-Libeau into the Science department this week as Eric’s replacement and we will also be welcoming Shaun Tavernor next week as a new Deputy Principal, and a Science teacher. Staffing changes inevitably cause more disruption and I thank the students for their patience in these times. You should have received information and brief biographies of persons standing for election in the upcoming Board of Trustees elections. Please read these carefully and make sure your voice is a part of this process by voting by 12.00pm on 7 June. It is also important to recognise the service of outgoing members, particularly Deanne Daysh who has served on our board for over 6 years with the last three spent as board chair. Deanne has donated a huge amount of her time to the school and I am forever in debt for her inspirational leadership and support in this forum. We have recently renamed our special needs unit from base 1 to He Kākano. He Kākano means ‘seed’ and conveys growth, development and expansion. Even before a seed is planted or nourished, it has inherent promise – the capability to take root, develop, grow and blossom. He Kākano reminds us of the opportunity we have in schools to make new beginnings, to plant, to nurture, to cherish, to realise potential, to grow and enhance that which is. He Kākano is a symbol of productivity and the promise of success through learning and achievement. Finally, this is the time of year when we market ourselves to our community. We have had feeder school visits and we are about to run our annual Open evening on Monday 10 June. We always look forward to this opportunity to showcase the work that we do at our great school. My speech to the feeder school students was about opportunity and the words above which He Kākano embodies, explain this perfectly: opportunity “to make new beginnings, to plant, to nurture, to cherish, to realise potential, to grow and enhance that which is”. Over four weeks we will explore the practice of Care for Creation. This continues our emphasis of putting our faith into practice, and will focus on our desire for knowing God more through intentional practices, relationships, and experiences. We will be doing this as a community of all generations, starting with an intergenerational service on Sunday 23rd June. STUDENT STUDY SPACE A massive thank you to the big team of volunteers who were the ‘friendly face’ of us as a Church for students wanting a warm quiet space to study. Making this space available for the students in our city preparing for their exams was an experiment for us as part of our Vision to connect more with our neighbourhood – creating safe spaces to be, to belong, and to navigate the tough stuff. We continue to pray for those with exams, and that they may know the support of our community throughout the year, and for ‘all of life’. CHURCH CAMP We’re excited to let you know there's a church camp happening this year! It's at Paekakariki Holiday Park from Fri evening 20 Sept till Sunday 22 Sept. Working together to protect taumai DCM and Te Aro Health Centre (TAHC) have a long history of working together to support the most marginalised people in our city. TAHC operates a satellite outreach clinic at DCM three mornings a week. Over the past month, a key joint focus has been on ensuring that these vulnerable people are protected against COVID-19. The importance of this was brought into even sharper focus when our second vaccine clinic at DCM had to be postponed due to New Zealand entering another Level 4 lockdown. But as has always been the case at DCM, we found a way to make this work – and were able to continue to vaccinate those who need it most at a second vaccine day during lockdown. Here DCM’s Director, Stephen Turnock, and TAHC Nurse Practitioner/Clinic Lead, Bronwyn Boele van Hensbroek-Miller, talk about their shared commitment to the people who DCM calls taumai*. Before our first DCM vaccine day, we had lots of kōrero with taumai, ensuring they had the information they needed and that all their questions were answered. Here Bronwyn and Stephen lead a COVID vaccine information session at DCM. Stephen: Here at DCM this month, we have been reflecting on human rights – the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person. As a nation, we have signed up to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, yet so many of the people DCM supports do not have access to these basic rights. Article 25 states that everyone has 'the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and wellbeing of himself and his family' – including medical care. Our partnership with Te Aro Health Centre (TAHC) is key to providing this care for the people who come through our doors. Bronwyn: Yes, at Te Aro Health, we believe that everyone has a right to maintain good health and to have access to high quality health services. We work to assist those in Wellington’s inner city, with low or no income, and with other barriers to accessing healthcare, to achieve and maintain good health. Our priority is to enrol those who are homeless, those with a history of drug and alcohol abuse and those who have a mental illness. It was a very different world when the first vaccine clinic was held at DCM pre-lockdown. Stephen: Having TAHC and a team of vaccinators offer the COVID-19 vaccine here at DCM has been great for taumai – for them, it's all about accessibility. Having the vaccine available at DCM where they feel comfortable, among people they trust, has been an important factor. Last year, during our first lockdown, Bronwyn and her team went out alongside DCM kaimahi to connect with taumai in emergency housing, offering flu shots and health support. Every week, they are here at DCM, seeing taumai and addressing any health needs they may have: from long-term health issues through to injuries, rapid testing and treatment for hepatitis, and of course their mental health needs. And when we were again not able to open at DCM in Lukes Lane during this month’s Level 4 lockdown, TAHC continued to offer their support including COVID tests from their own health rooms nearby. In the weeks preceding our vaccine days at DCM, we have spoken with taumai, answered their questions and heard them share their own reasons for getting vaccinated. For our first vaccine day, we offered transport to DCM for those who needed it, so that they could receive their vaccine. We provided kai, community and waiata to taumai as they waited with us for 20 minutes after their vaccine. And after this time, we cheered for each person as they left, thanking them for the part they have played in keeping themselves, their whānau and all of us – their community – safe. Bronwyn: And then when we found ourselves in another lockdown, we worked together to find a way to continue vaccinating safely. TAHC enormously values the collaboration we have with DCM so it was great that last week we were again able to offer vaccines at DCM under Level 4 – masked up and safely spaced – enabling dozens of taumai to receive their first dose, and many their second. Rough sleepers who have been very reluctant to be vaccinated came forward and showed such courage. They are doing their part, just as so many other New Zealanders are. Yes, this is just one more example of how we can support the health and wellbeing of the most vulnerable people in our community when we all work together. Last week, taumai were able to safely access a COVID vaccine at DCM under Level 4 thanks to Bronwyn and her team. 24 received their second doses, while 56 received their first. At this challenging time, DCM was also able to support them in other ways. One very vulnerable man received his vaccine, and then we were able to arrange emergency housing for him. <!-- --> "I chose to get vaccinated because..." Our director Stephen led the way and was the first member of team DCM to get vaccinated. "I chose to get vaccinated to not only protect myself and my whānau but also to protect my community and those I interact with on a daily basis. As a middle-aged Māori, I also recognise that we have an increased risk of infection, hospitalisation and death. Therefore if my choice to be vaccinated results in more health resources available for others in need...Tu meke!!!" Some of our kaimahi received their vaccine at DCM – to inspire taumai to get their vaccine too. Delena (Mama Dee) is a member of team DCM who heads out to community centres as part of DCM’s community connections mahi: “I chose to get vaccinated in order to become a safer member of my community – I did it for my whānau, my colleagues at DCM, and the wider community.” Fiona is one of DCM's kaiawhina (peer support workers). She received her vaccine here at DCM alongside taumai. "I chose to be vaccinated because I care about our whānau – both those we support here in this special community which is DCM, and my whānau down south. It was in the back of my mind for a while, but being able to get the vaccine here at DCM – well, it was a no-brainer." Manu was the first of many taumai to receive the COVID vaccine at DCM. "Why did I choose to get vaccinated? I have been coming to DCM for 16 years. It takes 10 years to get to know me! But now I feel comfortable here because I know you all, and you know me. And I was reminded of a verse – 'Evening passed and morning came'. We have all been through some tough times, but now there is something we can do for ourselves and for others." Nicole was also one of the first to line up for a vaccine at DCM. "I chose to get vaccinated because I'm pregnant and I want to protect my baby." Some taumai shared beautiful reflections with us. One man told us: "I know that my ancestors have got my back. I just imagined, 'what if I got COVID and took it back to my marae?' I couldn't face my ancestors... So I looked up to the sky and thought, 'we got this'." <!-- --> Supporting the most marginalised during lockdown DCM kaimahi have been working in designated pair "bubbles", to keep everyone safe. Here George and Jay are all loaded up and ready to hit the road, delivering much needed food support to taumai. At alert Level 4, we have not been able to invite taumai to spend time with us here at DCM, or to meet with them out in the community centres near to their homes when they are housed. However as always, DCM has remained committed to supporting the most marginalised in many different ways. Taumai can get hold of us on a dedicated 0800 number and phones are again available for those who need them. The Outreach team has been heading out on the streets to connect with rough sleepers, while the Aro Mai Housing First and Sustaining Tenancies teams continue to provide a wide range of services to taumai throughout the Wellington region, ensuring they are well connected and supported during this difficult time. Food has been dropped on the doorstep for those who need it most, and emergency housing arranged for those without shelter. Our teams have also been calling taumai to check in with them and see how they are doing. Taumai often tell us that it is this contact and kōrero that they value most; lockdown is a very lonely time for many. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. Children who do not successfully meet the swim requirements will be unable to use the paddle boards and compete in the water events at junior surf sessions and carnivals until they obtain their current 200m badge.  Junior Surf athletes will need to swim 200m confidently (25m lane), followed by a 1 minute tread water, within the SLSNZ allotted time depending on their age.  U10/U11/U12 is swim 200m in 7 mins, tread water 1 minute U13 swim in under 5.5 mins, tread water 1 minute U14 swim in under 4.5mins, tread water 1 minute 200m BADGES Badges are to be sewn (carefully) onto your competition cap. If your child(ren) has completed the 200m swim a badge can be collected at sign-in at junior surf sessions on Sunday mornings. <!-- --> PARENTS / CAREGIVERS IN THE WATER U7 AGE GROUP is an age which, at Lyall Bay with its variable wave height and harsh conditions, is unable to be left to just the coaches and lifeguards. U7 athletes require a parent/caregiver to be in the water with them at all times. U8 - U9 AGE GROUP we ideally would like a parent/caregiver in the water or water edge ready to enter if required,  If your child requires extra assistance in the water, please enter the water with them, rather than assuming our volunteers will be able to look after them. Please note:  Our club relies heavily on the active involvement of parents, the club cannot function without people volunteering. Kids love to see their parents/caregivers interacting at the club. Parent/Caregivers participation is encouraged in the water at all ages. This is a great way for parents to be actively involved, it’s a great way to increase your own water confidence and have FUN. Dragonboating This weekend our staff and student teams will be out on the water. If you are in the city at the following times, head down to the waterfront to support them. Staff teams will be on the water on Saturday 7 March at 10.00am, 10.40am, 12.20am, 1.50pm and 3.50pm. On Sunday 8 March, it is our students’ term. Their races will take place at 10.20am, 11.00am, 11.50am with the time for the finals to be confirmed. Drama Camp 2020  Year 13 Drama students travelled to Featherston this week for a three day rehearsal intensive. Isolated from distraction we took the scripted word and forged this into physical action. Hard work, focus and commitment by the students means we are now looking good for opening night on Monday 23rd March.  While Wairarapa sunshine demanded intervals of bush walks and river swims we still ploughed through an extraordinary amount of material.  We look forward to sharing with you the fruits of our labour as follows: Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan MacMillan Monday 23rd – Wednesday 25th March, 4pm and 6pm on the Riley Hall stage Girls Like That by Evan Placey Tuesday 31st March at 6pm, Wednesday 1st March at 4pm and 7pm Year 12 visit City Gallery Photography students had a treat this week listening to Shaun Waugh talk about his passion and inspiration for creating his work . Students were then taken through a workshop on developing their own cyanotype based on cubism. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to meet an artist and get involved in a hands on workshop.  Te Papa workshop Te Papa  has developed some new provocations to get audiences and in particular young adults thinking about art in the galleries in new ways. Te papa has invited a group of WHS students to trial these ideas. Last Monday,the students went into the galleries trying out and giving feedback on the provocations,  and what worked for them. The students feedback will definitely feed into what Te Papa is planning to produce in coming exhibitions. Thanks to Samson Bodkin, Eve Ashby, Dillon Parker and Molly Henry who took part in this workshop. He Kākano supported by Year 11 PE The He Kākano students were supported by a YR11 PE class during their mainstream in practice-integrated, interactive adapted involvement with peers session in the gym this week.       Careers Gateway opportunity with Chorus Telecommunications The Chorus Gateway program is run one day per week over eight weeks and is made up of two unit standards totaling 21 credits at Levels 2 and 3. The course is run by iskills, a Category One NZQA private training establishment that offers the only telecommunications technician apprenticeship in New Zealand. This course will include classroom-based learning, hands-on network lab activities, and in-field observation. Students may be introduced to industry contacts regarding employment and recruiting opportunities following successful completion of the course. They are looking for students who: Show an interest in the future of technology Enjoy learning about modern tech devices such as mobile, tablet, and device applications  Have a natural curiosity of how technologies work  Are innovative and enjoy new challenges Work well with teams  This Gateway placement is by application, applications close Friday 13 March, to apply please email paula.willis@whs.school.nz and complete a Gateway Expression of Interest form available from Student Services or on the school website, the form must be signed by a parent or caregiver. View this email in your browser Tis the season for Afterwork Orienteering and our Christmas AGM Mihi nui kia <> Our start to spring has been a bit quiet locally but now we have plenty of news for November! Next weekend is the 37th Anniversary of the Wayne Cretney Classic, organised by Bryan Teahan. It’ll be a true endurance event using new maps around Mornington and Berhampore. Red medium, Orange, Yellow and White courses on-the-day courses are still available. We also have a club events in the pipeline, including afterwork events at Onslow College on Wednesday 15 November and Te Herenga Waka VUW campus on Wednesday 29 November. Orienteering Hutt Valley will also offer some afterwork events before Christmas and the annual Big Trig rogaine on Sunday 10 December. See you at the next event! Paul Teesdale-Spittle President Club achievements at Nationals Orienteering Wellington can celebrate a number of achievements from the NZ National Orienteering Championships held in Hawke’s Bay recently. Many members placed well, especially some of our veteran runners. Here are some of the standout achievements – which in no way overshadow the satisfaction and personal success all runners should feel irrespective of where they finished. In the sprint, Lauren Wills came first in W40A, as did Gillian Ingham in W65A, Neil Kane in M75A and Don Locke in M85A. Mattias Bengtsson took second place in M10, as did Lisa Bengtsson in W40A and Dorothy Kane in W75A. In the middle distance, Yvette Baker took first in W50A. So too did Gillian Ingham in W65A, Neil Kane in M75A and Don Locke in M85A. David King took second place in M60A, as did Kate Fortune in W75A. The long event on the Tuna Nui map was a standout whereby seven members came first in their grades: Katie Cory-Wright in W21A, Lisa Bengtsson in W21AS, Sarah O’Sullivan in W35A, William Power in M40AS, and David Middleton in M55AS. Gillian Ingham and Neil Kane took triple crowns, coming first in their classes too. Lara Molloy was hot on Katie’s heels coming second in W21A, as did Lauren Wills in W40A, Yvette Baker in W50A, and David King in M60A. We have a lot to be proud of from this year’s Nationals, and can look forward to taking spirit of fun and success to Rotorua next year. We’ll confirm the venue and details soon but our gathering tends to include plenty of time for orienteering antics, food and socialising as well as business. The Fortune Cup for service and Endeavour Cup for performance are also awarded. On the topic of business, club officers must be elected. I, Lachlan, and Gerald are all happy to stand again as president, secretary and treasurer respectively but equally happy to step aside if you’d like to have a go. Sarah O’Sullivan to lead ONZ Congratulations to Sarah O’Sullivan, who has been elected Chair of Orienteering New Zealand from December! Sarah was our own club president immediately before Paul and has been active in the club for many years. Sarah runs elite grades at major events. We’re really excited for Sarah and know she’ll lead ONZ extremely capably. She is the second woman to hold the position of chair after our own Jane Harding. Here she is modelling the new club kit! Technical tip: Visualise the circle When you look to the next control, how well can you picture exactly what your approach will look like? To know precisely where the control will be placed you need to convert the map into an image in your mind of how the terrain in the control circle will look. Watch the video about developing a clear mental image of stepping stones and handrails, how they relate to each other and how you will flow through them. You should flow though control sites just as you flow through the rest of the leg. Content provided by Orienteering New Zealand Fitter, faster, better together! Magnus Bengtsson and Lizzie Ingham are continuing with group interval and sprint training at 6pm Tuesdays. You’ll get to build fitness running along the flat, up hills, or maybe a mix—and doing intervals as a group is much more motivating than doing intervals on your own. This training is primarily for Orienteering Wellington members but anyone is welcome to attend for free. The location is movable, so email Magnus if you’re keen. Looking ahead: Major events in 2024 Sprint clinic Orienteering Wellington will hold a Sprint Clinic on Saturday 20 to Monday 22 January (Wellington Anniversary Weekend) on local sprint maps. This is deliberately held ahead of the Oceania Sprint Championships but will be useful for any runner looking to develop their sprint skills. Find out more about the Sprint Clinic Oceania Sprint Champs 2024 Oceania is a trans-Tasman sprint championship, next year hosted by Orienteering Taranaki with their Lonely Mountain Sprints (26-29 January) and Auckland Orienteers with the Auckland Triple Crown (3-6 February). Lonely Mountain includes six sprints as well as a knock-out championship and relay championship, while the Triple Crown has three sprint races and Oceania Sprint Championship. Lifting up the most marginalised during Lockdown 2021 Just as we did in 2020, Lockdown 2021 has seen us working together once again, to ensure that the most marginalised are supported at this challenging time. From DCM kaimahi, to our team of health professionals, to our wonderful supporters - here members of team DCM talk about their work supporting the most marginalised during the latest lockdown. Natalia Outreach team Natalia and Joanne headed out on outreach together during lockdown. “We had a pair on outreach every day during lockdown, following up on notifications sent to us from the council or the public. We had way more notifications in the three weeks at levels 3 and 4 than we had had in the previous entire month. During lockdown, everyone on team DCM works together, doing whatever it takes to support taumai* during these challenging times. Members of our Outreach team have manned the 0800 number, been scribe support for kaimahi who were on the ground, supported on-site sessions, and delivered food and welfare checks, all on top of following up on notifications. Members of other teams have also gone out with us when we have needed support. Joanne has been a fantastic member of team DCM for some years now; she is currently part of the Aro Mai Housing First team out at the Hutt. One afternoon during lockdown, Joanne and I were doing street outreach around the Wellington CBD. We had some notifications to check on, and as we were walking back to base we came across a taumai who everyone at DCM had been trying to find during the week – we wanted to get him into the emergency accommodation (EH) that had been booked for him. With appropriate social distancing, Joanne and I were able to bundle him and his blankets up and to walk him about a kilometre up the road to the EH where he happily checked in. It helped that Joanne bought him some coffee, sugar and milk and promised him that she would deliver a food parcel to him the next day; this was enough incentive for him to stay. It was a job very well done, and at last we were able to head back to the office. Just before we got to Dixon Street who did we see, but another taumai who everyone at DCM had been looking for and trying to get into the accommodation. After a bit of convincing (and half of Joanne’s cheese scone – boy she’s good!!), he too turned around and followed us up to the accommodation and happily checked in. What a long, but successful day that one was! When the rest of the city goes in to lockdown, DCM and our NGO colleagues continue to fill the void that other agencies and businesses leave when they close their doors. For example, people can contact MSD case managers by phone, but what if you don’t have a phone or any money to buy one? People who have no fixed abode and lose their Eftpos cards can’t access their money because the banks are closed and so they cannot go into a bank to order a new card. Rather they would have to log in to internet banking (a barrier for most of the people we work with) and have a bank card sent to their address (another barrier for many taumai). In these real life lockdown examples, DCM has stepped in to give people cell phones with credit, and to organise for benefits to be sent to DCM’s MMS account and taumai given DCM Eftpos cards in the meantime, so they can access their money. We leave the safety of our own homes and safe bubbles, to continue to offer face to face, daily support for people who cannot access some basic human rights, because those who provide the services aren’t able to offer a solution that meets the needs of their most marginalised clients.” George Aro Mai Housing First team George and Jay load up the car with food parcels to be delivered to taumai during lockdown. “I joined the team at DCM in June, so I was still a fairly new team member when we went back in to lockdown. We were immediately paired up with a bubble partner; I was paired with Jay and the two of us worked together throughout the lockdown period. I would begin my working day by checking flags and emails, before heading out to pick up Jay. We always had one in the front and one in the back when we were together in a car. We would arrive at DCM at our allocated time to load our food parcels into the car. Jay and I would make a plan as to where we should head first – delivering food parcels, checking in on someone who is isolated, ensuring people have their money cards, or getting a phone to someone who doesn’t have one. I would drive, Jay would sit in the back and keep checking our list of addresses and phone numbers for the taumai who needed our support. We called taumai when we arrived or we knocked. People were so pleased to see us and thankful for the food and social contact. DCM had allocated a scribe for the day to each pair bubble, so we would phone our scribe and get them to type up any notes for us into the database, or do any research we needed done. Often extra things came up, like one man who we were delivering a food parcel to who told us he needed his prescription renewed. We were able to sort this over the phone.   When we were not going out to connect with taumai, we spent a lot of time working to get others into emergency housing. We connected people with the health and other supports they needed, supported them with budgeting and access to money, and found out things for them, like if they needed to go to court under level 3. We were involved in many meetings by Zoom. We were every bit as busy during lockdown as we would be on an average day at DCM, and we were able to provide the same level of support, safely – by being creative, committed and kind.” Delena Sustaining Tenancies team Delena is part of the Sustaining Tenancies team, working with vulnerable tenants at risk of falling back in to homelessness and delivering DCM’s community connections programme. Photo by Nikki Parlane. “During the lockdown period, DCM was divided into different bubbles. I enjoyed being in a bubble with Tabitha from the Aro Mai Housing First team. This was a great opportunity to get to know someone from another team. We would start our day by planning it out geographically – figure out who we needed to visit and where they lived to make things as smooth-sailing as possible. Food was definitely an important support for taumai during lockdown, and we were able to take food parcels to those who needed them, leaving them at their door. It can be a challenge for taumai to prepare their own meals. It’s not just the skills, but often they don’t have access to even basic items like can-openers. We had two taumai in their own bubble; I made it my mission to get them an appropriate food parcel so they could eat together. They have been a good example of how our taumai support one another, how important this has been during lockdown, and how a simple thing like preparing a meal together can give them such a sense of achievement. One other thing we discovered all over again was that our taumai were desperate for someone to talk to.  Some of them would be calling over and over again on the 0800 number, and we knew they needed the reassurance of a visit to settle them. We were able to speak with them at a safe distance during lockdown. It’s in their faces – you can always see in the eyes of our taumai how important the time we spend with them is to them.” Sophie Lead Dentist Sophie ran a dental session at DCM as soon as we moved back to Level 2, providing emergency treatment to those taumai who were in the most pain. “At any level of lockdown I am just on the other end of the phone. We can triage taumai's needs and from what is being described, I'll quickly be able to tell if they need an urgent appointment at the hospital or if we can put a band aid on in the form of antibiotics, until DCM is able to open again. Fortunately emailing prescriptions has been made much easier nowadays. And as soon as we were back at level 2, we dentists were able to get back to DCM to run emergency dental sessions for those in the most pain. Taumai have been absolutely amazing, working in with DCM's level 2 safety guidelines, and as always, the people we're seeing here don't have easy access to dental care. Photo by Nikki Parlane. “At DCM, we were one of the few organisations able to continue to support the most marginalised people in our city face to face during alert level 4. We know that our taumai are even more vulnerable and isolated at times like this. How do we respond as an essential service, when others have closed their doors? The great news is that taumai were able to engage with us on our 0800 number, with some in-person mahi delivered at a safe distance.  Another key focus for us has been to ensure taumai have access to the COVID vaccine. Offering the vaccine at DCM during alert level 4 was challenging, but also absolutely necessary. We know how very vulnerable these people are to the Delta variant.  And yesterday, we were able to offer a third vaccine day at DCM, with even more of the most vulnerable receiving their first or second dose of the vaccine. If there are any ways we at DCM can ensure taumai are not even more marginalised as a result of COVID and lockdowns, we will search them out and deliver them. This has always been DCM’s kaupapa, and is what we are all about. We know this is why so many of you support our mahi, and why you have stepped up again during lockdown 2021, donating money and food so that we can carry on.” The Wellington community Together we can end homelessness During lockdown, taumai like Mahir were so appreciative of the groceries we were able to leave for them on their doorsteps. Lockdown 2021 has again reminded us that the people of Wellington really do have our backs, and the backs of our taumai. A number of you have made donations to DCM during this time, to enable us to continue to do the mahi which members of the team have shared with you here. During the lockdown levels, DCM has provided far more food support to the most vulnerable people than we usually would – and as a result, our foodbank shelves have been emptied. Many of you have understood this, and stepped up to help. From the Freemasons Charity, the St John’s Trust Op Shop and St. John's in the City who provided extra dollars for us to purchase food, to New World Chaffers who, when they received a large order from us, provided all of the items as a donation. Ngaio Union Church opened their doors to people who wanted to donate food items for DCM to re-stock our foodbank; the two women seen here with minister Sue Brown travelled all the way from Miramar where the Grind Health & Fitness gym had organised a collection. Ka mau te wehi! Last weekend, our friends at Ngaio Union Church opened their doors for local people to bring in food donations to restock our shelves. Yes, Lockdown 2021 has provided many examples of how the Wellington community comes together to support DCM and the people we work with.
