      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/02/2013 - 09:00 - 10:00 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  5 The Harbour Master requested the assistance of Coastguard Mana to help resolve a situation caused by severe southerly winds overnight.  A catamaran in Porirua Harbour had slipped its anchor and drifted into a trimaran moored nearby.  Both yatchs were caught together and the strong southerlies had caused the trimaran to puncture the cat above the water line. The owners were on board and declined assistance.       • ORCHESTRA WELLINGTON’S THIRD SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT  “POLISH” Night on Bald Mountain -   Modeste Mussorgsky Piano Concerto Op 20 in F-sharp minor - Aleksander Scriabin Symphony no 3 in D Major -   Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Orchestra Wellington Marc Taddei, Musical Director Michael Houstoun, Piano Here is music to conjure up pictures in the mind’s eye! Few people could hear Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain without recalling Disney’s fantastic images created for the 1940 film Fantasia. Inspired by Gogol’s story of a witches’ Black Sabbath on the eerie Bald Mountain, Mussorgsky created a tense and dramatic score that resolves into one of the most beautiful clarinet solos ever written. Scriabin was a pianist-composer who saw music in colour, and ascribed mystical powers to it - and to himself! As he said in one of his notebooks: “I will ignite your imagination with the delight of my promise. I will bedeck you in the excellence of my dreams. I will veil the sky of your wishes with the sparkling stars of my creation. I bring not truth, but freedom.” His 1897 piano concerto was written as he moved from composing Chopinesque miniatures towards the larger, wilder musical canvases of his later career. Pianist Michael Houstoun says he finds the concerto highly poetic. “Its qualities are veiled, sometimes almost like a meditation. It’s a fabulous work.” This concert is named for Tchaikovsky’s Third Symphony, known as the Polish. It, too, is a transitional work. Here, Tchaikovsky loosens the demands of classical European forms in order to strike out on his own with this freely-imagined symphony. The Polish plays up his strengths, with middle movements that conjure up the grace and energy of the ballet, and in the middle, a yearning slow movement that could only be a wordless love song. As Music Director Marc Taddei says, “It is unique among all of his symphonies, being in a major key and with five movements. It is very free in inspiration and one hears intimations of the great ballet scores that he was just about to begin writing.” As you may know, shortly before our last concert, Matthew Ross resigned from his position as Concertmaster for Orchestra Wellington. We wish to thank him for his 12 years of service to the organisation and wish him the best. We also wish to congratulate longstanding Principal of the First Violins, Stephanie Rolfe, for successfully stepping up and leading the Orchestra through its last concert. As we get the recruitment process underway, we are delighted to be able to announce a Guest Concertmaster for this concert, Vesa-Matti Leppänen. To say this is a privilege would be an understatement. Leppänen comes to us from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, where he is Concertmaster. This generous gesture is a visible demonstration of the way arts organisations and artists in Wellington are enriched by their cooperation and exchange with each other.     • Miramar v BNU 1sts - 25th August 2013
      • 2pm, David Farrington Park We headed to David Farrington Park to play Miramar in the final game of the season.  Following Saturday's results, we believed a solitary point would be enough to keep us clear of the relegation places.   The game kicked off with the intensity of a cup final.  The Brooklyn crowd were vocal in their support, the large travelling contingent of fans certainly made the lads feel 10 feet tall.  The game was being played at a cracking pace: a strong Miramar side featuring former All White Campbell Banks and current Solomon Islands International Henry Fa'arodo, was being matched by the heroes in red and black.   The first 30 minutes was fairly even.  Both sides were spraying the ball around with confidence and great speed,  the Miramar coach admitting the game was being played at Capital Premier standard.   The deadlock was broken when Miramar smashed a volley from the top of the box after 32 minute s, a quality strike that left Zen no chance.  Miramar doubled their lead 10 minutes later from a free kick, the Miramar player's run not being picked up, leaving him unmarked at the far post for an easy finish.  2-nil down and all to play for.   BNU were awarded a penalty right on half time for a handball in the box.  Paul Sanchez, who has been great from the penalty spot, strode forward with purpose, only to watch his shot go wide of the left hand upright.  The score remained 2-nil to Miramar at half time.   There was calm in the changing room, as we were creating a number of chances and our covering defence had prevented Miramar from testing Zen with shots on goal.  We believed if we kept to our standards we could get back into the game.  The next goal would be the most important of the match.   The 2nd half started at the same pace as the first.  We continued to press high up the pitch to prevent Miramar from getting into any kind of rhythm.  Their increased ball speed certainly tested us and the class and experience of their players was stretching us right across the pitch.  However, we were not giving up without a fight and were rewarded for our efforts when Paul Clune smashed home after 58 minutes to bring the score back to 2-1.  This also bought the crowd back into the game, they had been fantastic throughout.   Ben Goodwin, who had been introduced at half time, went close on two occasions shortly after, with almost identical shots from the edge of the area.  His pace and direct style were causing problems for the Miramar back four.  We were dealt a blow on 70 minutes when Campbell Banks finally got the better of Damian Gurnick, turning on the edge of the area, to beat Zen in the left hand bottom corner.  3-1 down, with 20 minutes to play.  It was time to gamble and throw numbers forward.  We had nothing to lose and everything to gain.   2 minutes later Banks was at it again, losing his marker and slotting his 2nd to make it 4-1 with 15 minutes to play.  You would forgive BNU if heads dropped, but not with this team, the lads weren't prepared to throw in the towel, and in true BNU fashion they fought for every possession and continued to push forward.   Tom Bisley and Ben Purser were introduced, giving us 4 strikers on the pitch for the final 15 minutes of the season.  Tom Bisley went close, not once but twice, but unfortunately shot wide on both occasions.   As we pressed forward, there were inevitably gaps left at the back and Banks completed his hat-trick with 3 minutes to play.  Just to rub salt into the wound, Miramar scored a 6th with the last kick of the game. 6-1 the final score which in no way reflects how close the game was.   As the lads left the pitch, and rightly applauded the large BNU crowd, our attention now turned to the Island Bay vs Seatoun match being played at Wakefield Park.  A Seatoun win would see us clear of the bottom 2.  We received update after update from our Chairman Martin Gray, who was finally able to phone through the result we had all been waiting for, 2-1 victory to Seatoun.   Back in the Miramar clubrooms, there was a mix of cheer and relief as we believed we could now reflect on a season of highs and lows.   Strong performances, in this our last game, from Captain Andy Cochrane, who was all industry and quality in the middle of the park, Damian Gurnick, who put his body on the line time and time again, and Man of the Match Simon Barker, who won everything in the air and reminded everyone of his undoubted talent.   A special thanks to the crowd who really helped the lads dig deep right to the end.  You guys were fantastic!   I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Martin Gray, Adam Brownie and the Committee for all of their support over the last 2 seasons.  Special thanks needs to go to our physio Dan Sainsbury and my team manager Annie Bannister for all of their hard work and high standards set and maintained throughout the season.   Finally, I would like to publicly thank the playing group for their contribution to the 2013 season.  It has been a pleasure working with you all this year.  You have represented this club in the best possible way, on and off the pitch.  You all bought into the plan and genuinely wanted to play football the way it's meant to be played.  Andy Cochrane and Simon Barker led the team each week with class and integrity.  Without them, the task would have been so much harder.  Thank you both.   I look forward to seeing you all this weekend at the Prize Giving.  Hopefully we can sit down over a beer and celebrate what has been an eventful season. View this email in your browser Tis the season for Afterwork Orienteering and our Christmas AGM Mihi nui kia <> Our start to spring has been a bit quiet locally but now we have plenty of news for November! Next weekend is the 37th Anniversary of the Wayne Cretney Classic, organised by Bryan Teahan. It’ll be a true endurance event using new maps around Mornington and Berhampore. Red medium, Orange, Yellow and White courses on-the-day courses are still available. We also have a club events in the pipeline, including afterwork events at Onslow College on Wednesday 15 November and Te Herenga Waka VUW campus on Wednesday 29 November. Orienteering Hutt Valley will also offer some afterwork events before Christmas and the annual Big Trig rogaine on Sunday 10 December. See you at the next event! Paul Teesdale-Spittle President Club achievements at Nationals Orienteering Wellington can celebrate a number of achievements from the NZ National Orienteering Championships held in Hawke’s Bay recently. Many members placed well, especially some of our veteran runners. Here are some of the standout achievements – which in no way overshadow the satisfaction and personal success all runners should feel irrespective of where they finished. In the sprint, Lauren Wills came first in W40A, as did Gillian Ingham in W65A, Neil Kane in M75A and Don Locke in M85A. Mattias Bengtsson took second place in M10, as did Lisa Bengtsson in W40A and Dorothy Kane in W75A. In the middle distance, Yvette Baker took first in W50A. So too did Gillian Ingham in W65A, Neil Kane in M75A and Don Locke in M85A. David King took second place in M60A, as did Kate Fortune in W75A. The long event on the Tuna Nui map was a standout whereby seven members came first in their grades: Katie Cory-Wright in W21A, Lisa Bengtsson in W21AS, Sarah O’Sullivan in W35A, William Power in M40AS, and David Middleton in M55AS. Gillian Ingham and Neil Kane took triple crowns, coming first in their classes too. Lara Molloy was hot on Katie’s heels coming second in W21A, as did Lauren Wills in W40A, Yvette Baker in W50A, and David King in M60A. We have a lot to be proud of from this year’s Nationals, and can look forward to taking spirit of fun and success to Rotorua next year. We’ll confirm the venue and details soon but our gathering tends to include plenty of time for orienteering antics, food and socialising as well as business. The Fortune Cup for service and Endeavour Cup for performance are also awarded. On the topic of business, club officers must be elected. I, Lachlan, and Gerald are all happy to stand again as president, secretary and treasurer respectively but equally happy to step aside if you’d like to have a go. Sarah O’Sullivan to lead ONZ Congratulations to Sarah O’Sullivan, who has been elected Chair of Orienteering New Zealand from December! Sarah was our own club president immediately before Paul and has been active in the club for many years. Sarah runs elite grades at major events. We’re really excited for Sarah and know she’ll lead ONZ extremely capably. She is the second woman to hold the position of chair after our own Jane Harding. Here she is modelling the new club kit! Technical tip: Visualise the circle When you look to the next control, how well can you picture exactly what your approach will look like? To know precisely where the control will be placed you need to convert the map into an image in your mind of how the terrain in the control circle will look. Watch the video about developing a clear mental image of stepping stones and handrails, how they relate to each other and how you will flow through them. You should flow though control sites just as you flow through the rest of the leg. Content provided by Orienteering New Zealand Fitter, faster, better together! Magnus Bengtsson and Lizzie Ingham are continuing with group interval and sprint training at 6pm Tuesdays. You’ll get to build fitness running along the flat, up hills, or maybe a mix—and doing intervals as a group is much more motivating than doing intervals on your own. This training is primarily for Orienteering Wellington members but anyone is welcome to attend for free. The location is movable, so email Magnus if you’re keen. Looking ahead: Major events in 2024 Sprint clinic Orienteering Wellington will hold a Sprint Clinic on Saturday 20 to Monday 22 January (Wellington Anniversary Weekend) on local sprint maps. This is deliberately held ahead of the Oceania Sprint Championships but will be useful for any runner looking to develop their sprint skills. Find out more about the Sprint Clinic Oceania Sprint Champs 2024 Oceania is a trans-Tasman sprint championship, next year hosted by Orienteering Taranaki with their Lonely Mountain Sprints (26-29 January) and Auckland Orienteers with the Auckland Triple Crown (3-6 February). Lonely Mountain includes six sprints as well as a knock-out championship and relay championship, while the Triple Crown has three sprint races and Oceania Sprint Championship. Enter or find out more about Oceania 2024 NZ National Orienteering Champs in Rotorua Nationals 2024 will be held by Orienteering Bay of Plenty in Rotorua and Taupō over Easter (Friday 29 March – Monday 1 April). The maps are shaping up to be fantastic and this is a great part of the country fora family holiday if you need to coax others who aren’t so fussed on orienteering! Orienteering Wellington has made an ‘in principle’ decision that events be in or within easy reach of urban Wellington. There will be courses for everybody and, with a focus on local and accessible events, we’re looking forward to folks getting involved, both running and helping run the events. The couple phoned Police on 111 from a cell phone at approximately 9.45pm after their boat hit rocks a few hundred metres off shore; losing power and taking on water. The Police, Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Coastguard were all sent to the aid of the couple, who managed to climb into a small dinghy (in choppy conditions) as their boat sank beneath them.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 09/02/2012 - 16:30 - 16:45 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  1 Two swimmers were caught in the tidal flow exiting the channel into Porirua Harbour on an outgoing tide. This pushed them out of the channel entrance towards Goat Point. The swimmers were spotted waving and screaming for assistance and Coastguard Mana was activated by Police to assist. A training crew was already onboard Trust Porirua Rescue in the marina, engines fired up and ready to depart on a training excercise, when the call came through. They were able to depart immediately and were on scene within 3 minutes of the call from Police.     • OBU Premiers off to flying start
      • The Goats got their season off to a flying start today, eventually running out 35-13 winners on a hard and fast track reminiscent of a dustbowl at times! A hand-picked panel of experts on the sideline selected centurion Augustin Escalona as the player of the day for some outstanding defence around the rucks and mauls, great work in the loose and for being a key part of an impressive scrum and lineout. There were several new goats that got some dust on their hooves today with Caleb Delaney, Seamus Langton and Reece Plumtree all having great debuts. There were a few injuries but hopefully not serious enough to hinder selection for next weeks match against last years runners-up Norths at home in Porirua. In the early game, the Premier Reserve Goats were unlucky to pull up just short 15-12 in the last few minutes. Promising signs for a great season. Next week your normal match reporter will bring his insightful comments direct to you, and for the rest of the season.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/01/2021 - 11:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 7m runabout had steering failure whilst anchored up diving/fishing on the west coast near Boom Rock. They called CG Radio and gave their location as Titahi Bay. MR1 responded and was unable to locate the vessel anywhere in the Titahi Bay area and their phone was out of coverage. Escalated to Police to assist with enquiring about their location (as we had no way of contacting them). Police eventually managed to get a call connected long enough for them to say 4km south of Titahi Bay. We found them 3.6NM (6.6km) south of Titahi Bay and towed them home to Mana Marina.     • Building Update - 1 September 2022
      • We thought we would give you an update about what has happened in regards to our building recently - which in short is not much!As part of our MAP - Taking Flight process we were looking at some options of what could buildings be used for in this parish in the future and I am sure that has sparked some discussion and some ideas that might be floating around. The Brick Building In July, we received a letter from the Council asking us for an engineering report as they had identified that the building was potentially an earthquake risk. In working with the Diocese we provided the engineering report that was done a while ago (which subsequently meant we could not use the building). Therefore you will see on the doors of the building there are now official notices from the council stating the risk of the building's earthquake rating. It also states on it that we have until 2 July 2037 to rectify the situation.

    • 6hr tow of yacht from Wellington south coast
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 05/01/2023 - 09:30 - 21:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  84 38ft steel yacht got it's anchor stuck near Makara/Ohau. Whilst manoeuvring to release it they overheated the engine. They were unable to sail due to low wind and inexperience, so ended up drifting south in the strong currents. By the time we got to them they had drifted 10NM into Cook Strait, south of Karori Rock through the Karori Rip. It took us 5hrs to tow them back to Mana, by which point the tide was at it's lowest point. We had to put them on the mooring just outside the bar and then return the passenger back to base, leaving the skipper aboard.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 25/04/2013 - 10:00 - 13:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  30 CRV Trust Porirua Rescue and Pelorus responded to a Police callout for a dismasted yacht 2 miles south of Mana Island.The yacht had gear failure and the mast, boom and mainsail were hanging over the port side.Porirua Rescue passed bolt cutters to the yacht so they could cut away the rigging. On cutting away the rigging an attempt was made to marker buoy the gear with a buoy from Pelorus, this was unsucessful. Once the gear was freed from the yacht she made her own way under power to Mana Marina attended by Porirua Rescue and Pelorus. Beloved Sisters – for the emotion and passion of two centuries prior.   Tom Beard REALITi: While NZ doesn’t have a stellar track record for science fiction movies, Chad Taylor and Jonathan King make an intriguing team that should bring dark, literate menace to this existential dystopian thriller. Particle Fever: Themes don’t come much bigger than the nature and fate of the universe, so this documentary about the Large Hadron Collider and the search for the Higgs boson should appeal to more than just physics junkies. Goodbye to Language 3D: Godard infamously said that “a film should have a beginning, a middle and an end but not necessarily in that order”. He continues to throw out the rules, not just for the 3D technology normally reserved for popcorn fodder, but for language itself. Tom Ackroyd Boyhood. Because of the idea of the lead aging from 6 to 18 over the course of the story, and because it’s a Richard Linklater picture. Hard to Be a God. Never heard of the director but the NZIFF write-up is irresistible. Under the Skin. Jonathan Glazer’s long-evolving back catalogue points to him eventually doing something extraordinary and I’m hoping this is it.   Runner-up:  Is the Man Who is Tall Happy? I’m a Michel Gondry nut. He can do no wrong. I actually have a crush on him. Sue Tyler The Tale of The Princess Kaguya – for what is film festival without a Studio Ghibli film National Gallery – behind the scenes at the national gallery, it looks like all the things i crave in a documentary The Lady from Shanghai - I love the old restored films that are brought back every year. I still remember the year Rear Window played at The Embassy and despite having seen that film on video many of times it blew my mind. The day has been filled with assemblies, reminiscing, excitement, tears and sentiment. To all our seniors, we wish you all the best, whether you are sitting NCEA exams or joining the workforce, whether you are leaving us or returning to WHS in 2020.        Level 3 Art Portfolio exhibition The Level 3 Art Portfolio exhibition is happening in the Art department,  D block, Monday 4 November, 12pm – 5.45pm and Tuesday 4 November 9am-5pm. All welcome. Japan exchange students’ farewell Saaya Nakahara and Saki Sasakawa have been attending WHS since the end of August as part of their exchange from Osaki Kasei, WHS’s sister school in Japan. Below are some of the memories of their experience here. We arrived in NZ on August 30. We have had many experiences in just 2 months. We went to the Climate Change strike on 27 September. We have never been to a strike, so we were surprised that there were so many people. It was a good experience because we cannot join a big event like this in Sapporo. Our most exciting experience was the Ball. We do not have an event like this in Japan. This was the first time for us to go to a dance party. We took a lot of pictures with our friends in the photo booth. Our favourite photo was taken with our year 13 Japanese classmates and Grace. Thank you for giving us wonderful memories!!! Achievements NCEA Art folio exhibitions Folios were exhibited on two Fridays this term showcasing the enormous efforts students have put into their artmaking this year. Many friends parents and staff visited the exhibitions.       Rowing regatta success WHS Rowing have completed in their first regatta of the season: the Queen’s cup regatta. The regatta was held over a 1000m course with all rowers competing to a high level despite the cold and windy conditions. The next race will be on 2 November and is the Norton Cup Regatta.      Floorball  Former WHS student Marie Sundin is transferring from Wellington Floorball Club to Swedish IBF Falun. Last month the International Floorball Federation picked Marie as one of the top three international transfers. Congratulations Marie!

Historically, racing at this venue has been in the wet, and under these conditions simply getting a bike down the track becomes a game of survival. But on this occasion, Karori turned it on for riders. At the end of racing - Daniel Meilink took out the Open Men category ahead of Michael Mells and Bryn Dickerson. In Masters 1 & 2 - Nathan Timoko and Ali Quinn claimed the top spots respectively. And the juniors were dominated by the Macdonalds - with Finlay taking out under 17 and brother Lachie, under 15. Current National Champ Sarah Atkin recorded a very respectable time that would have put her just outside top 10 in Open Men, and Finn van Leuven also put down a solid time in Hardtail. We’ll catch everyone at the final WDHS round this Saturday, 6th December at Maidstone. Race Results & Series Points Juvie & Duel Slalom Grand Opening Crews and contractors have been hard at work at Miramar of the past months and we’ve recently seen the completion of two new tracks - Juvenile Delinquent, and the Kids Duel Slalom. The sum of these, combined with the pump track and dirt jumps is a great zone for kids and beginners to hone their skills, only minutes from the City. The grand opening of Juvie and the Kids Duel Slalom last weekend was a huge success. About 150 people turned up to mark the occasion on Sunday, including City Councillors and Mayor, Celia Wade Brown. Once the tape was cut, Mayor Celia spoke positively of the Club’s recent work at Miramar and Island Bay. South Coast Kids Track Wins Another Award You may recall that earlier this year, the Club received a Wellington Airport Community Award for its work on the South Coast Kids Track. Well last week the Kids Track did it again - this time at the 2014 NZ Recreation Association Awards. The annual awards recognise excellence in the recreation and leisure industry, and the South Coast Kids Track was named Most Outstanding Project. Thanks once again to Wellington City Council, Trail Fund NZ, Bike Wellington, Revolve Cycling and Southstar Trails.  Draft Suburban Reserves Management Plan Submissions close this Friday 5th on the WCC Draft Suburban Reserves Management Plan. This is the last opportunity members of the public will have to share their views on the future management of Wellington’s suburban reserves - between Khandallah and Miramar (including Makara). This plan will have a significant impact on the future of mountain biking in our city, and the planning process only comes around once every 10 years. This is great news if you like beer.   Online entries opening later this month Event Details >> Klunkers, Chainless & Kids Bike Dual Slalom - Jan 24th, 2015 After a successful event earlier this year, Klunkers is back! The aim of the race is simple: dig out your old kit and 90s race weapon, do as many timed runs of Jailbrake as your body (or bike) will permit within 2 ½ hours, and heckle like you’ve never heckled. There will be four categories: Klunkers, Chainless, proKlunkers and Klunkers (under 12), and an additional Kids Bike Dual Slalom race. Entry is by donation of old (useful) bike parts, cash, or your bike. All proceeds go to Biketech and the Mechanical Tempest. Event Details >> Trail Building Updates Clinical (Polhill Reserve) As you may recall from the last Polhill update, The Brooklyn Trail Builders reported significant progress on Clinical. When it’s complete, the track will round off a grand loop of the Reserve. Most of the track is now rideable, and it’s set for completion sometime during early 2015. Currently, contractors are finishing construction of bridges on the trail, and volunteers are working on approximately 200m at the bottom. Although this section is incomplete, there’s a steep track that can be used to bypass it. The next dig is this coming Sunday, 7th December at 3pm. Details over at Brooklyn Trail Builders. There will be an event to commemorate the official opening of Clinical, tentatively around April 2015. We’ll keep you posted. We would also like to congratulate BTB whose work was this week recognised at the Roll on Wellington Cycle Awards. Mt Victoria Thanks to all those who contributed recently to the Mt Victoria trail user survey. We’re currently compiling the results, but feedback was largely positive. In case you missed it - here’s the full rundown. But in short, the WCC has requested that changes be made to the lower part of the Super D line. The Club, in consultation with trail leaders and the Council, has come up with a plan that involves essentially realigning the trail, from the SPCA south. In addition, the plan includes work around busy junctions to reduce the risk of conflict with other trail users. No major work will take place on Mt Victoria until the new year. Orchestra Wellington Presents:  Roald Dahl’s Dirty Beasts, and Maui’s Fishhook 3pm Sunday 12 July The Opera House, Wellington James Rolleston received the 2014 Te Whanau O Waipareira Best Supporting Actor for his role as Mana in The Dark Horse opposite Cliff Curtis. In 2014 he also featured in The Dead Lands, directed by Toa Fraser in which he played young Maori Warrior Hongi, and both films have received critical acclaim internationally. James is also well known to New Zealand audiences from the film BOY in which he played the title role and received a nomination for Best Actor in a Lead Role at the 2010 Qantas Film and Television Awards. Since then James has appeared in three short films, here in NZ he featured in Frosty and the BMX Kid and shot in Australia he was in MAN and the yet to be released Amúa in which he plays a Rugby League player. James also featured as himself in campaigns for Vodafone for several years. Maui’s Fishhook is an original piece for orchestra and narrator written for Orchestra Wellington by its Education Composer in Residence, Thomas Goss.       • *OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE* ORCHESTRA WELLINGTON’S FOURTH SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT   “FATE” Concierto de Aranjuez -  Joaquín Rodrigo Piano Concerto No 2 in F Major - Dmitri Shostakovich Symphony No 4 in F minor - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Orchestra Wellington Marc Taddei, Musical Director Michael Houstoun, Piano Andrey Lebedev, Guitar Rodrigo’s guitar concerto casts a shaft of warm Spanish sunlight over Orchestra Wellington’s largely Russian programming this year. The Orchestra welcomes Russian-born Australian guitarist, Andrey Lebedev, performing it as part of his prize for winning the 2013 Gisborne International Music Competition. Gisborne International Music Competition manager Mark La Roche says he is incredibly proud of the partnership formed with Orchestra Wellington to provide the overall winner of the GIMC with the opportunity to perform in Orchestra Wellington’s subscription series. “I can vividly recall Andrey’s winning performance and know you will thoroughly enjoy hearing him play the Rodrigo Concerto - he is an exceptionally gifted and thoughtful musician.” Continuing its association with Michael Houstoun, Orchestra Wellington also presents Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto as part of this year’s Russian Piano theme. Shostakovich was a virtuoso pianist and a composer with a reputation for grim and cryptic works. But in this concerto he paid tribute to his son, for whom it was written, with a piece reflecting the boy’s lively, mischievous nature. He also gifted him a slow movement filled with beautiful melodies and lush harmonies worthy of the great Romantics. With his Fourth Symphony, Tchaikovsky stopped trying to be anything other than himself. It opens with the full brass section hammering out an uncompromising theme inspired by the “Fate” motif in Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. As Musical Director Marc Taddei says, “The Fourth Symphony is Romantic to its core, with clear programmatic expressions of fate, melancholy, grandeur and joy”. Tchaikovsky’s heartfelt expression of his inner life has found resonance with audiences everywhere ever since. Andrey Lebedev on Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez Lebedev says that the concerto had a profound impact on his life when he first heard it as a teenager. “I knew that I had experienced something very rare and special, and it was a key moment in my journey to become a professional musician. “My goal is to create this same magic when I perform - to remind ourselves that there is something greater than just the here and now.” He likes to view the concerto as a triptych framing the second movement. “The second movement is all about expression and meaning. I strive for intense beauty of sound, intimacy, lyricism, and direction - leading the music organically from the first bar all the way to the climax in the cadenza and resolving into the major cadence at the very end. When all of these elements come together I think the impact can be earth-shattering.” “The first movement introduces Rodrigo’s sound world and draws the audience into a relationship with the guitar and orchestra. It is joyous and spirited. The music has a natural vitality that stems from Rodrigo’s fascination with ancient Spanish rhythms and the flamenco tradition. “The final movement is a buoyant and uplifting finale, again using elements from the Spanish baroque in a modern context. I am still young, and every year I feel like I am discovering amazing new things about music. This piece has grown and developed just as I have over the last years. Most notably I now strongly feel that this is both a flamenco concerto and a baroque concerto, and somehow finding the balance of these elements lies at the heart of understanding the music.” Andrey Lebedev Biography Recognised for his powerful and expressive sound and exceptional musicality, classical guitarist Andrey Lebedev has defined himself as an artist pushing the boundaries of the instrument and gaining acknowledgment from new audiences. Born in Moscow and raised in Adelaide, he was brought to international attention as the first-prize winner of three major multi-instrumental competitions. In 2012 he won both the Australian National Fine Music Young Performers Award and the Sydney Eisteddfod NSW Doctors Orchestra Instrumental Scholarship, in both cases the only classical guitarist to receive this award. His artistry was further highlighted in 2013 as winner and recipient of the Bach prize at the 25th Gisborne International Music Competition, and the only Australian winner of the Adelaide International Guitar Competition. Now based in London, Lebedev enjoys a dynamic performance career as soloist with orchestra, solo recitalist and chamber musician. His engagements for the 2014/15 season include solo recitals at the Wigmore Hall, and the Adelaide International Guitar Festival. He has featured with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Canberra Festival Camerata. Smoking her opposition in the iron woman and board taking golds then silver in the Run Swim Run and surf race and ski race. The team did really well in team events with a bronze in the U17 mens tube rescue, Silver in the U19 women's tube rescue, Gold in the U19 women's beach sprint relay. Amelia and Ella took silver and bronze in the 2km run, Bruno took bronze in the U17 beach sprint and Joe took bronze in the U15 beach sprint, silver in 2km & boys U17 silver in beach relay. Rhys Speirs Director of Sport / Head Coach Maranui SLSC <!-- --> U11-U14 Athletes, Supporters and Coaches JUNIOR SURF What a break our juniors have had, Wellington brought some great beach days…. 13th of January saw a team of 12 U11-U14 athletes compete at the Central Regional Junior Champs (CRJC), Fitzroy, New Plymouth. Our young participants showed the Maranui values coming away with several medals and putting the club 7th overall in our region. Well done everyone. Last week we had our annual trip to Papamoa with the development team and tamariki planning to attend Oceans. What an amazing week. Training with local clubs Papamoa & Mount Maunganui helps the development of skills in conditions we can’t provide in Wellington. The coaches were super proud of the effort, resilience and confidence our team showed, even when a large fishy predator turned up. For all our U10s we have next years camp booked for 18-22nd January 2024 for anyone who wants to enjoy more time in the surf developing skills. Catch any of the development coaching team to discuss this programme if you are interested. A small team represented us at Riversdale carnival and I want to send a massive thanks to the parents who stepped up to make it happen for the kids. It’s our parent volunteers that make our club work. Junior surf restarts this Sunday, with a time change to 3.30pm start for all to allow for those participating in the Ocean swim. Sign in by 3.15pm. Look forward to catching up on the beach. They will receive a copy of the planning sheet in rōpū and the planning sheet is also included as the last page in the booklet online. Choices can be made online in the Student Portal from Monday 14th September. It would be appreciated if students can have their options entered by Sunday 20th September (note: this is earlier than reported in the email home). Senior Course Choices for 2021 The second part of senior course choice selection for 2021 is now underway. Students now need to re-confirm their subjects on the portal by Friday 18th September.  Please note there have been considerable movements with the lines to eliminate as many clashes as possible. It is unlikely there will be significant changes to the lines from now, so students are strongly advised to choose non-clashing subjects if possible. However, students who still have a problematic clash should indicate this on the updated lines sheet (which will be given out at rōpū) and give this to their rōpū teacher. Concerning online content  Netsafe has received several reports about a concerning video that was shared on social media. It has now been removed from Facebook. The video has been shared on other social media sites, such as Tik Tok and Instagram, and the platforms are actively removing this video.  Regardless of whether students have seen the video or heard about it second-hand, young people may experience emotional distress given the nature of this content. As a school, our best advice is to make sure that your students are supported and have avenues to talk about how this content may be affecting them.  If students do come across copies of the video being shared, we’d strongly encourage them to report it to the social media site or website that it’s on, and to report it to Netsafe. Netsafe has several helpful resources: Helping students exposed to upsetting content Online Safety Parent Toolkit is a wider framework for helping parents navigate online safety with their young people. If students would like further support they can contact Youthline on free text 234 or call 0800 376 633 Achievements Debating Finalists! A huge congratulations to our Junior Prem and Prem B teams who have made it through to their regional finals for debating! The Junior Prem team of Sky Gobbi, Liv Calder, Tom Bonert, and Fergus Martin-Edgar, won their semi-final debate last Tuesday against Samuel Marsden. The Senior Prem B team of Julia Randerson,  Alex Buyck, Corwin Heath-Cameron, and Rata Petherick won their semi-final debate this week against Scots. It is a very impressive result for Wellington High School debate teams to make it into two finals! We are very proud of both teams and wish them all the best for their finals.  Also — a special congratulations to Julia Randerson who qualified for Wellington Black (one of the two Wellington regional teams) a couple of months ago. Her team made it to the national semi-finals for debating after winning four of their preliminary debates! Katherine Mansfield Short Story success! Congratulations to Nadezhda Macey for winning the Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award 2020 with her story ‘Matahiwi’, and to Cadence Chung for her Highly Commended story ‘The End of the World’. Wellington High School was the only school to have two students short-listed — a great achievement. Nadezhda received a $500 cash prize and the eleven short-listed students were presented with certificates by guest judge Tina Makereti at the annual award ceremony at the National Library on Tuesday night. Mural workshop with Sheyne Tuffery This week a group of art students joined Sheyne in developing a design for a mural for the level 2 linkwell. This is a WCC funded project that Sheyne has been working on for some months. Sheyne’s mural work can be seen on Wallace Street and Hopper Street. We look forward to seeing the final results — BSJ WHS Tramping Club heads to Atiwhakatu Hut Last weekend, 18 students tramped to Atiwhakatu hut. We walked from Holdsworth station car park along the river to Atiwhakatu hut and back. Students cooked their own meals and lit the fire for a cosy night. A little rain failed to dampen our spirits; there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear! — AEJ/PAB From the Greenhouse! From the school garden greenhouse this week orchids for WHS reception. Grown with care by the senior horticulture students. He Kākano news Our He Kākano students have enjoyed an outdoor education week. We visited the learning centre at the Botanical Gardens to learn about how produce grows from a seed to a fruit and vegetable. There were opportunities to pick our own carrots too! A visit to Toi Art at Te Papa had us in a colour room with some interesting group photos. Sports Underwater Hockey Congratulations go to Carlos Relph and Henry Murdoch from our Senior Open team for their selection to the U18 Central Zone B team, and to Milly Woodbury from our Senior Girls team for her selection to the U18 Central Zone A team. We wish them good luck at nationals. Well done to them, and something to aim for in future years for our junior players Junior Girls’ Football Our Junior Girls’ Football played their last game this week, this is the first team we have had in this grade for a number of years and we are looking forward to having a team in this grade for years to come. Huge thanks to Bea Gladding and Jennifer Argyle for really driving this team and making it fun for all the girls. Winter Tournament Our Girls’ Football 1st XI finished their Round robin the Regional Premier 2 competition in 3rd place with Semi Finals, and possibly Finals, to come. At the Winter Tournament, the girls place 12th which is their best finish to date. A special thanks to Isobel Smith, Heidi Coleman, Ella Blakely, Gala Baumfield, Emma Allen, Kayla Landers and Isla McInnes who all competed in their final tournament for the school. Also, thanks to Will Dewhirst who has done a great job coaching. Our Boys’ Football 1st XI finished their last game of the Round Robin D1 competition, finishing unbeaten after 7 games. So, we have finished 1st with 17 points (5 wins and 2 draw). We are heading now into Semi Finals on Saturday 12 September. Our Boys’ Hockey 1st XI are currently in 2nd place in the P3 division and are hoping to compete at the final in week 10. The boys competed hard at Winter Tournament week and finished it off with a win over Newlands. Big thank you to Will Pinckney, Jess Johnson and Kether Gati for looking after the team. Netball: Last year our Senior A netball team won their grade and this year they have done it again! Well done, too, to our Senior B team who won their grade too. Great things are coming from these young strong wāhine…and our Year 13s finishing on a high.
