Casino Royale (with cheese)
- Eye of the Fish
- I mentioned this project in passing the other day, in a post about the return of the cranes to the city skyline, and thought its worth having a bit of a closer look at it this morning. I’ve been sneaking off into Moore Wilson’s car park to take photos every so often, and so this first photo is from a few months back, when just a skeletal framework is showing. There is, to my eye anyway, something quite beautiful about the clear simplicity of the structure on this building: there’s an insitu concrete wall, and then there’s some steelwork. The columns are relatively small and slender – the work is being done by the concrete wall, and so all these babies have to do is cope with gravity.

- Bloodless zombies would appear to be that latest trend if April’s Warm Bodies and this week’s World War Z are anything to go by.

Storm
- Eye of the Fish
- Well, wouldn’t you know it – the storm of the century in Wellington, and I’m not there to see it. From all accounts, it was a real doozy – I’m glad to hear that Wellington has pulled through, even if various seaside properties are minus fences and stretches of roads. Best quote for me came from that bloke in Lyall Bay, who was quoted as saying “you think you’ve got a fence, and then you don’t” which for some reason I found very funny. I was a little distressed to hear of some of my fellow fish found flapping their last across a stretch of highway though.

Basin Pavilion and Spine Study
- Eye of the Fish
- I did have a small post scheduled for tomorrow morning, but the release of both of these today sort of takes precedence! It never rains, but it pours! Seems kind of appropriate, considering the weather we have been having lately. So: seeing as the Basin Reserve “mitigation” study / blatant bribe to the Reserve Trust has been released, and the Passenger Transport Spine study, and the material for the EPA from NZTA have all been released today (there is no coincidence here, it’s all been carefully planned out), and that’s just al too much for me to post on – I thought I’d just throw it open for you to comment on.

- Eye of the Fish
- OK – Hear me out here people. There’s been a lot of kerfuffle over a couple of things this week – one is the proposed $43m strengthening of the old Town Hall, and the other is the proposed $300m extension of the airport. First things first : where have those figures come from? Put them [...]

New-ish at the Movies: The Great Gatsby, Bekas, Fast & Furious 6 and The Last Sentence
- The Wellingtonista
- For all the digital glitter and anachronistic hip-hoppery that signifies our latest re-entry into Luhrman-land, The Great Gatsby itself takes fundamental inspiration from a black and white classic from 1941.

Cities are, or at least should be, driving globalization
- Jack Yan
- My friend and colleague William Shepherd directed me to a piece at Quartz by Michele Acuto and Parag Khanna, on how cities are driving globalization more than nations—a theme I touched upon on this blog in March 2010.
