    • Art at your feet
      • While there's a lot going on around the Buckle St section of the bypass, Karo Drive itself is going to take a long time to integrate into the texture of the city (sad, empty buildings don't help). Some citizens have taken things into their own hands and decided to give that most anonymous and downtrodden of icons, the pedestrian walkway pictogram, a bit of individuality.

    • Kumutoto khazis
      • It may not have as rarefied a subject as the Memorial Park, but there has been another design competition going on: an internal contest among staff at Studio of Pacific Architecture, who have co-designed the public space at Kumutoto, for a combined public toilet and "folly" to go near the southwest corner of the Steamship Wharf building.

    • Greening Ghuznee
      • The pavements are still being dug up all along Ghuznee St, four months after the bypass was completed and a couple of months after the "remaining work" was supposed to be done. Some of it is finally starting to look like the pretty renders suggested, though it's hard to tell whether that will make up for the bits where the pavements have been sacrificed for more parking.

    • Stupidly lazy?
      • A perceptive (though perhaps less than tactful) commenter said, in response to my post on the Johnsonville Town Centre Plan:The major flaw seems to be the assumption that J'Ville becomes a walkable community.

    • Phoenix: Warm-up Match Moved Again
      • The first Wellington Phoenix home pre-season game has been moved for the second time. Originally announced for the Basin Reserve, at some point it was switched to Newtown Park and now, according to the official site it has been moved to Westpac Stadium due to “concerns that Newtown Park would not have the capacity to cope with the big crowd expected.” Sunday at 2.00pm is kick-off time and the tickets are only $10 (and free for under 16s).

    • REVIEW: The Black Seeds
      • The Black Seeds, promoting their new album Into The Dojo, graciously afforded us one last gig before their departure overseas. The Victoria University crowd were well fired up thanks to the dub collective that are the mighty Pacific Bass Culture and by the time The Black Seeds hit the stage people were ready for some deep grooving.

    • Numero Uno? Numero no no!
      • When I saw the first issue of Uno on the shelves at the supermarket, I was hoping it would be the Wellington equivalent of Metro - on a good day, not all "Why your kids' school will give you cancer and never let them buy a house" Listeneresque. But it's not. It's really, really not. Instead it turns out that Uno is every bit as advertising-copy driven as the Wellington Guide - without the advantage of at least being Welly exclusive.

    • Building rumours 15: Forest and Turd
      • hanks to DeepRed for pointing this out: the so-called "Te Aro Towers" on the former Forest & Bird site on the corner of Taranaki and Wigan streets.Oh god. I'd been forewarned of its awfulness, but with higher-res images now available it looks worse than I expected. It really doesn't make it easy to promote high density urban living when unimaginative crap like this is what the market provides.

    • Just the ticket
      • Many thanks to Greg for pointing out something that should be more widely known: for the month of July, Daytripper passes (unlimited bus travel within zones 1-3 after 9am weekdays and all day at weekends) are half price. At $3, that brings it down to the same cost as the carbon-unfriendly cheap weekend parking that was announced with much more fanfare than this bus deal.

    • Kids' Film Festival
      • One of the more excellent things we've seen land in the Wellingtonista's intray that allows harried parents to entertain their kids for FREE these holidays, is the Film Festival taking place down at the Film Archive. So if you've got a loved one at home looking after some housebound kiddy-winkles, give 'em a call and tell them to head along...

    • PHOTOS: Riverblind
      • Some of the crowd at ValveSolid rock with an almost operatic vocal style is how I would attempt to describe Riverblind in one sentence. Lead singer/guitarist Dave Kempton has an incredibly powerful, smooth and melodic voice. Backed up with solid drums from Tim Whitta, and Dan Simpson throwing himself around the stage with his 6 string bass, these guys are a surprisingly powerful live act.
