June 2008 | April 2008
    • Another tasty tit bit
      • Enjoy gallery is hosting the penultimate event in their performance workshopping series tonight. Of course, dear reader, it would be outrageous to suggest that you have no other social engagements lined up for the Saturday of a long weekend, but if you can forgive me once again for the short notice, may I suggest that you nip up to the Enjoy gallery on Cuba St (upstairs near Scopa).

    • Songs of Hollow Hill
      • If you are looking for something a little bit different to do this week, then I can highly recommend that you get along to Happy to see Songs of Hollow Hill. Happy is the perfect wintery venue; warm, cozy and intimate and this show is one not to be missed. A combination of deliciously insane gypsy songs and theatre performed by two extremely talented Toi Whakaari grads.

    • This should be more popular: Chef's Cafe
      • At the top of Cuba Street, opposite Fidel's and next to a sex shop is what appears to be a crappy little tea room named Chef's Cafe. You might think that they're going to try and sell you a pie and a custard square, but you couldn't be more wrong. See that little sandwich board outside that says "Takeaway Curry $10"? That's right, this is an Indian restaurant. And it's good. And it's insanely cheap*.

    • Supreme and Enduring Awards
      • Two central Wellington buildings have won awards at the NZIA’s national awards ceremony in Auckland, according to the Dompost. Both of them are pretty fantastic, and have won awards before - there’s the new Conservation House by Architecture + (completed only a year or so ago) and then there is Massey House by Cedric Firth and Ernest Plishke, some 50 years before.

    • Wellingtonians clean-up top Comedy Awards
      • Wellington has emphatically come out with the last laugh at the 2008 New Zealand Comedy Awards. Both of the top prizes went to local Welling-town comedians at the culmination of this year’s comedy festival, held in Auckland’s Sky City Theatre.

    • 48 Hours: Furious Film making
      • This weekend marks the 6th time 48 Hours has been held. What is 48 hours you might ask? Basically, a whole bunch of film makers, both experienced and amateur, organised and chaotic turn up at various locations around New Zealand this Friday night, are given a genre, and maybe some other mysterious factors to include, and are let loose to make a film and hand it in 48 hours later. This year there are more than 600 entries, so the mind boggles as to how many people in total are participating.

    • Why I voted against Mayor Prendergast for Local Government New Zealand
      • The position of president of Local Government New Zealand is too important to be held by a peak oil denier. That is why I would not support Mayor Prendergast in her bid for the position. Peak oil is the most serious issue that we face on a local and global level. I made that clear while the Dompost reporter was recording proceedings. Furthermore, the mayor has shown nothing of the balancing qualities needed in a democratic role. Democracy is much bigger than one person getting their way. Majority rule is always to be balanced with minority protection and sharing the benefits.Bryan Pepperell Wellington City Councillor for Southern

    • The Best Cocktail Party In Town
      • It’s the 202nd birthday of the cocktail this coming Wednesday (the 13th) and YOU are invited to the early party. On Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th of May, three of the best cocktail-making institutions in New Zealand are pulling out all the stops to celebrate this very special occasion.  The Matterhorn, Motel bar, and the Hawthorn Lounge will be combining their super-powers to deliver a taste of class to all Wellington cocktail lovers.  Each bar will delve into a sacred tome on the craft of the cocktail, and strive to recreate their classic recipes for your tasting enjoyment.  The Matterhorn will be working from The fine art of mixing drinks (By David Embury, 1948), Motel from The bar-tenders guide (Jerry Thomas, 1887) and the Hawthorn folks will be utilising selected drinks from The Savoy cocktail book (Harry Craddock, 1930).  There will also be an aim to enlighten one and all on the glorious (and at times infamous) history of cocktails. This is shaping up as two stupendous evenings of entertainment, indulgence and (Fun) education.  So round up you homies and homettes for cocktails at one or all three of Welly’s cocktail-forging icons.  You can practice your James Bond or Sarah Jessica Parker for this, so don’t forget to dress to impress! -Darren

    • Human Rights Film Festival 2008
      • Having spent many years working for the Paramount theatre I have been lucky enough to see an overwhelming number of incredible films, but none have affected me more than the films I have been privileged enough to see courtesy of the Human Rights Film Festival. Their programme continues to get stronger with every year, and this year also celebrates the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

    • Transport - the route ahead
      • In what seems like a record fast time for Public Consultation, Greater Wellington Regional Council and Transit have turned out results from the public consultation round. As Transit’s “Phase 2 Consultation Report” notes, there was a total of 4673 submissions, including 3750 Option 3 “Green Alliance” postcards and 482 Chamber of Commerce postcards received, and a mere 71 actual written submissions from various bodies and organisations.

    • Furious Filmmaking
      • Registration for this year's 'V' 48 Hours Furious Filmmaking competition closes in only 8 days and organisers are once again looking (somewhat apprehensively) at a record-breaking number of entries. 2007 saw more than 120 teams take part in the Wellington region alone, and this year extra capacity has been made available so no one will get turned away.

    • Vodafone Homegrown 2008 - Wellington Waterfront, 26th of April
      • Blessed by good weather, Vodafone Homegrown had a lot to prove if it was going live up to all the hype surrounding it's innaugural year. And in most areas that promise was fulfilled. 30+ local acts appearing on four stages for over 10 hours, had all the hallmarks of a logistical nightmare in the making. Yet the Wellington waterfront was a good choice for such an undertaking, providing space and scenery to enhance the spectacle on hand.

    • Wishing for a better world
      • Wishbone have put up the prices of most of its food by $1, so now you will pay $7.50 for their cranberry, chicken and brie sandwich (luckily, next door to my local Wishbone is the Concorde Cafe where I can get a crusty baguette filled with salami and cheese, and a mystical half olive for a bargain $3.50). They say that it is the rising cost of petrol that has forced them into it. We say that maybe if they investigated ways to reduce the ridiculous amount of plastic that their food comes in, the cost of petrol wouldn't affect them quite as much.

    • My Brilliant Divorce Production Diary - Sound Design
      • Sound Designer, Gil Craig, recorded the voice overs on Wednesday morning and supplied a small set-up with the help of House Technician, Marc Edwards. This allowed us to test the recordings on a basic level in the rehearsals. From here Ginette and Geraldine discovered it didn't quite fit the picture they are trying to create. This is a technique often used by Sound Designers to test out their ideas and ensure they are on the same page as the Director.
