    • May for Music… New Zealand Music
      • Love it or hate it.   New Zealand Music Month is upon us again. Now in its ninth year, this homegrown musical celebration originally sought to raise awareness of New Zealand tunes on the airwaves, television and on ‘the charts’, with this more or less achieved, it’s now focused on nationally celebrating the special and creative talents of New Zealand musicians. Now for the cynics amongst u

    • Sos newtown
      • A press release from the New Zealand Police today revealed community constables are going to be working with Tranz-Metro and talking to commuters about problems in their areas, while in transit on the train. If this is what the police is going to do with their "precious" resources we need to build a railway station in Newtown!

The International is a full-time thriller about an international banking conspiracy and it's directed by Run Lola Run's Tom Tykwer. Naomi Watts plays second-fiddle. What happened to her career? Readings, Sky City Queensgate and the Empire, Island Bay. All the other releases this week

    • Ajax
      • Australias Ajax is a busy boy. Between his fashion lable (Tsubi) and record lable (Sweat It Out) he regularly plays iconic spots Fabric in London and Showcase in Paris as well as tearing up Australia. He is involved in Modular recordings, is the frontman for recent visitors BangGang and has racked up a highly impressive list of accolades including, but not exclusive to (deep breath): Technics In T

    • War memorials for Anzac Day
      • To the left is a war memorial that I discovered in Nelson. It is on the grounds of St Marys Catholic Church in Manuka Street. I don’t know anything about this memorial and it’s not listed on the register of war memorials on NZHistory.net.nz. Any information about it would be gratefully recieved. It would also be great to receive your [...]

    • Carless City For Wellington
      • With the recent dialog on the issues of retailers and town planners would now be a good time to consider engaging the New Zealand Property Council in our debate. Or better still is there an option for them to call a meeting now that we know Sir Robert Jones is in favour of "pedestrianization from the Railway Station right to the Embassy Theater"?

    • Great War memorials
      • In February I was in Collingwood, a small town in Golden Bay at the top of the South Island. Like many towns and cities around New Zealand, Collingwood has war memorials dedicated to local men who died in both world wars.  My grandfather, who was born in Collingwood, was only eight years old when WWI started in 1914. • Cinephilia: Opening This Week
      • At last I get some time to preview this week's new releases and, frankly, it hardly seems worth it. I've just got in from two of the most dispiriting experiences I've had in a cinema in some time. Full reviews will come when I've had a chance to find the right kind of language to describe precisely how unambitious Fast & Furious and 17 Again are, a challenge I must rise to before Capital Times

    • 'Fly My Pretties' are coming home
      • After a couple of years in hiatus, the live multimedia experience that is 'Fly My Pretties' returns for a must-see performance in 2009. Led by the incomparable Barnaby Weir (Whose Black Seeds were soundly beaten in the inaugural Summerset Cup by Fat Freddy’s Drop), Fly My Pretties will be playing at Wellington’s Saint James Theatre on Friday the 12th of June. This outstanding musical collaboration

    • Tongan Ninja to Screen at the Film Archive on Thursday...
      • See what the chaps from comedy duo Flight of the Conchords were up to six years ago - go and see Tongan Ninja, which will be screened at the Film Archive on Thursday. The Tongan ninja was trained in the ancient art of ninjitsu. When his father was eaten by a fish, Sione (Sam Manu) was brought up to follow the way of the ninja. Now he must journey toward his greatest challenge and defend the b

    • Move over Dorothy Patisserie…
      • Dorothy Patisserie started the ball rolling when it ceased serving its delicious sweet treats and smooth hot beverages after eighty years in the business. This was apparently due to their rent sky-rocketing a whooping $67,000 in six years… …THEN… …Many concerned Wellington residents were shocked and outraged by the news that the Courtney Place institution Espressoholic was given a mere month to relocate.

    • Man of sorrows
      • Te Papa has a strong collection of Colin McCahon’s early religious works, including three paintings from 1947 that depict events from story of the Passion: Christ taken from the cross, Entombment (after Titian), and King of the Jews. One of the enduring myths surrounding McCahon’s early paintings is that were rejected by critics. This is summed [...]

    • Enigmatic
      • Die-hard Espressoholic fans seem to be happy that it will continue in a new location, taking over from Dorothy's Patisserie in Cuba St. There are still grumblings about its previous location being taken over by "another godawful Courtenay Place bar", but there are signs that its replacement, "Enigma", might not be another Shooters or Electric Avenue.

    • Want to learn about mosses and liverworts?
      • I am helping to organise the 2009 John Child Bryophyte Workshop.   Bryophytes comprise mosses, liverworts, and hornworts.  The Workshop also covers lichens, and it provides a great opportunity  to learn more about these fascinating plants.  Novices are welcome, with guidance provided for beginners. The workshop will be based at Pukeora Estate, near Waipukurau in Hawke’s Bay, 15th-20th [...]

    • Reggaeton on a boat
      • Jinetero MC is a locally based Cuban reggaeton artist (yeah, one of those) and part of Olmecha Supreme. But as a solo artist, he has a new song called "Wellington", his danceable ode to the city. Sample lyrics: I say thank you, thank you very much.  Wellington, you have give me lotta lotta luck. But more importantly, the video is AWESOME. It manages to transform this windy city in

    • De La Soul: Do as De La Does
      • It’s time to get excited. Excited like “yo yo yo yo we’ve got De La Soul in the house” And by house, I mean the Opera House on 12 May 2009. That’s right, this hip hop group form New York is undertaking an extensive New Zealand tour to mark the twentieth anniversary of their epic debut album 3 Feet High and Rising. This album was, and still is, heralded as one of the most influential albums in hip

      • The Nissan Mobil 500 may be a distant memory, but it still has made its mark on the city - check out the way that Jervois Quay feels more like a chute designed for cars to hurtle along at high speed than a pleasant harbourside city street. But those wishing the relive the glory days can do so over at YouTube, where petrolheads have uploaded a selection of choice clips. My favourite is "One

      • A three-metre giant squid specimen washed up on a beach on Wellington’s South Coast yesterday (2nd April). In comparison with our colossal squid it’s a bit small, but because it’s small it’s interesting! Find out about the difference between Colossal and Giant squid. The squid was found in shallow water by Alana Spragg and her daughter Bella [...]

    • No more Fringe Festival??
      • That evil global economic downturn is looking to strike again, and this time the unfortunate victim may just be Wellington’s Fringe Festival. After well over a decade of entertaining the masses with some weird and wonderful antics, the Fringe may be abandoned as of next year, due to an overall lack of funding. The Fringe Arts Trust is in dire need of money, as budget cuts have already affected thi
