    • Free Wellington: on your phone!
      • Now there's the Free Wellington account, which will send you updates on things to do for free or under $10 in Wellington. But here's the trick: you can update it too. Just follow FreeWellington on twitter, and preface your updates with an FW, and everyone will be able to know what the water's like at the beach, or why they should be staying the hell away from Waitangi Park...

It takes place at the Reading Complex Foyer (Courtney Place) between 6pm Friday February 22 (TONIGHT!!), and Noon Saturday.

    • Follow Up: Athfield at Kumutomo
      • Having finally made my way down to the Waterfront Information Center, I was able to take more of a broad look at the Athfield Kumutomo wins. The pictures and write-up shown in the Dom really don’t give a full idea of the scheme, so here is something of a brief second look at the project. Apologies for the poor picture quality, need to start getting us those press releases.

    • Rock 2 Wellington
      • Today Wellington Airport unveiled the design for “The Rock”, an addition to the international terminal. However this is not just a simple expansion/addition, this is to be “New Zealand’s newest icon“.

    • Oriental Rooflines
      • Architecture + (plus what, one may ask, to complete the equation), have been one of the busiest architects in the city of late, barring Athfields and Archaus of course. They have recently unveiled the Republic 2 apartments, close on the tail of the Republic (1), which itself followed quickly behind the Monument, which followed the Piermont, and that followed the Portal. Someone’s been spending long hours at work!

    • Eva Dixon's to get the boot from the Zoo
      • The DomPost reports that Eva Dixon's Cafe is being given the old heave-ho from Wellington Zoo. The contract for the running of the Zoo's cafe came up last October, and, as co-owner John Heald said... We were under the impression it wouldn't have been a problem and were waiting for the paperwork to come through ... But no!

    • Flight of the Conchords live at Arovideo - Wednesday 13th February
      • This just in from those fine folk at Arovideo: It is our pleasure (and absolute thrill) to announce that Arovideo will be playing host to the hottest act in New Zealand (and possibly the world) right now, "Flight of the Conchords". In support of the local release of their widely-acclaimed HBO TV show on DVD, Bret and Jemaine will be performing a short set live in store from 10am, Wednesday the 13th of February, at 97 Aro Street in Wellington.

    • Firerockets at Night...
      • Explosions in the Sky! The latest instalment in a semi-regular Wellingtonista series on the thriving local touring circuit for international bands sees the instrumental rock goodness of Explosions in the Sky hitting Wellington for the first time tomorrow night, bringing their firecracker of a live set to the San Fran Bathhouse.

    • Sculpture Garden
      • This is one of my favourite places in Wellington: ... and if anyone ever tries to do it harm, as I've heard rumours of happening in the past, well... they just better watch out. Sorry for the crappy photo.

    • Light Rail Redux
      • In my last post, I expressed concerns with the light-rail proposal as detailed in the Ngauranga-to-Airport (N2A) strategic study. Implicit in my statement at the end of the post that “I have a hard time getting behind this light rail proposal at this point in time” is the fact that a different time or a different proposal could indeed change my mind.

    • Cinephilia: Opening This Week
      • It’s a quiet week for quality releases so you can all go to No Country for Old Men. Alternatively, if you’ve already done that or want a palate cleansing in advance of There Will Be Blood, you can check out comedy-thriller-romance Fool’s Gold at Readings, Regent or Sky City Queensgate.

    • The Forest Grows
      • In the wake of the Athfield waterfront win, a new seed is set to sprout up in the inner city. Taking root in the Willis New World Metro, this new tower is the latest in a string of green buildings that have been proposed or built. Aiming to achieve a five star Green rating, it seems to tick all the standard boxes: efficient air conditioning and circulation, double skinned glazing and sensor-operated lighting.

    • Wow Indeed
      • Athfield Architects have scooped the waterfront prize-pool, with a clean sweep win of all the sites covered in the Kumutoto North competition. Well done indeed to Ath and his merry band of cliffside dwellers. Wellington Waterfront also deservers kudos for having running a competition in the first place, and for sneaking out the press release a mere 5 months after the competition was held.
