    • Rock Show!
      • Boys Wanna be Her, girls wanna be her, I Don't Give a....because Peaches is going to Shake Yer Dix...Get It?Yes that's right, the queen of electro-smut PEACHES is heading OUR way for the very first time. It is a great time to be alive.Peaches owns electro-clash and her smutty tracks are often echoed through Wellington any given weekend at any rad party the city may harbour. This very special Berlin residing dreamboat is loved the world over. Her mix of punk, pumping beats, deep dirty synths and special guests, not to mention her super hot style will be getting all sorts of hormones pumping, bodies twisting and minds exploding on Thursday the 25th September at the San Fran.Tickets at Real Groovy.-Stacey

    • Civic pride
      • It may not be Wellingtonista Awards season just yet, but here's another chance to put in a plug for your favourite things in the Wellington built environment. The Wellington Civic Trust Awards are coming up, and the trust wants your nominations for the best recent contributions in the following fields: Building Heritage Environmental Public Space Street Art Nnominations close on the 18th of August, and nominated projects must have been completed since the previous awards in 2005. There's also a separate voting form for best new sculpture, and if the sculpture that does it for you isn't on that list, you could always nominate it in the Street Art category.

    • Wellington Construction corpses
      • The DomPost reported recently that Wellington Construction Ltd has bit the dust, owing various creditors money as it dissolved into a pile of construction rubble. We’re saddened by that, but its not completely unexpected: you run with wolves, you might just get bitten: although in this case its not really clear who is doing the biting. The saviour of Wellington football club Phoenix, our favourite spiky-haired developer Terry Serepisos has been hit by collateral damage - WCL were building Terry’s Century City development, leaving it in a state of limbo. Perhaps it may even have a a roll-on effect on the next Serepisos project in Dixon St. So, is this the start of the end of Wellington’s construction boom, or is it completely unrelated?

    • Talking 'bout the weather
      • Apparently all hell is breaking loose in the Hutt: rumours of heavy rain warnings abound, and messages are going around offices advising people living in Eastbourne to head home NOW. Certainly the radar shows some nasty stuff around, the result of the southerly making its way northwards, and the rainfall sensors and stream flows are starting to pick up. If anything dramatic starts to happen, do let us all know!

    • snapped? (toru)
      • Today, reader DaveK let us know that Snapper cards have finally gone on sale at a couple of retailers in town, at least. They're also available, along with the card readers that allow WinIE types to do refills at home, from the Snapper website.

    • It's a celebration!
      • The Mighty Mighty, Wellington's staple of fun, crazy nights of drinking Castle Points is about to give Wellington a gig overload which may not be good for your immediate health, but doctors have given the all clear over lasting effects.

    • Cheap Treasures at the New Zealand Affordable Art Show 2008
      • Some people find art a little intimidating and very mystifying. Well for those people and others a little unsure about the murky world of art - fear not! For the Affordable Art Show 2008 is here to make all things art-related, accessible and pretension free. Not to mention cheaper than the proverbial chips, as it hits the Queens Wharf TSB Arena on Friday, the 1st of August.

    • The Aesthetics Bring Skronking Noise to Wellington
      • I'd heard stories about The Aesthetics' Matthew Middleton long before I heard his music. A mutual friend told me about the time Middleton had a fancy computer and one day decided to pour red wine all over it. Just to see what would happen. It's safe to say the computer was screwed after that. I've since (but not necessarily because of) become a fan of Dunedin's The Aesthetics and I reckon you should go and see them on Friday at Happy when they bring their bratty and savage din to Wellington in a rare northern excursion. Formed in 1995 by enigmatic frontman Middleton, The Aesthetics play fearless, primitive punk rock with vintage synths and free-form noise guitar. The fiercely DIY and unstoppable outfit supported Sonic Youth in 1998. Sonic Youth's hip priest Thurston Moore liked The Aesthetics so much he released their LP My Right to Riches on his Ecstatic Peace label. There, is that enough indie cred for you?And if seeing The Aesthetics wasn't enough of a treat for you, they're playing with the Traveling Wilbury's of Wellington noise - The Stumps. Sort of a superband featuring Antony Milton (of label Pseudo Arcana), James Kirk (Dead C, Sandoz Lab Technicians, King Loser) and Stephen Clover (Seht), The Stumps is a band to be experienced live. I've seen The Stumps play scores of times, and each show is completely different yet always fantastic. Their sprawling, psyched-out improvised rock has drone and Krautrock leanings and is always sublime. Also on the bill is Panda Battle Battle Panda and Newtown. I haven't heard either of them before, though.Friday 25 JulyHappy118 Tory Street9pmwww.myspace.com/theaestheticswww.myspace.com/stumpsthe- Kiran

    • Cinephilia: Film Festival preview
      • The Film Festival has been a fixture of Wellington's winter calendar for nearly 40 years and for those of us who organise our lives around glowing rectangles of one kind or another there is no better way to spend a cold and wet afternoon than in the comfy leather chairs at the Embassy, engrossed in a work of art. Programming a Festival like Wellington may seem easy but I can assure you it's getting tougher every year.

    • Have a think about it.
      • It's time to put that thinking cap on, as Wellington's premier think-fest is around the corner. This year sees a return to the 7x7 ideas forum, called "The Big Think: New Zealand 2008" where seven leading thinkers are given seven minutes to convince and inspire their audiences- there for only $7 - their ideas.

    • Boondoggle Gully
      • Following on from our recent post dissing the likelihood of the “Transmission Gully” project ever getting off the ground, Transit made a big splash with a 4 page advert in the local rag (sorry DomPost, but your quality has been on a solid downwards trajectory lately and you no longer deserve the epithet of national newspaper), setting out improvements:

    • Here come the 2008 NZ Bar Awards!
      • The premier bars throughout Aotearoa are about to do battle for top honours at the 2008 New Zealand Bar Awards. The final will be held on Wednesday 6th of August at Auckland’s Hilton Hotel. Last year Matterhorn took out the award for best bar, and they are again favourites to take out number one spot in a bid for national domination of NZ's burgeoning bar scene. In fact, Wellington establishments have a strong representation across many of the categories, not to mention a ton of Wellingtonians putting up their hand for bartender of the year as well.

    • It's time to book your tickets..
      • Every year when the Wellington Film Festival rolls around, I do the same stupid thing. I read the programme, circle what I want to see, and then forget about it until it's too late, the films I want to see are sold out or I've run out of money to see them. Well, this year I will be trying my hardest to get organised enough to see my picks of the bunch!

    • Something smells like fish
      • For those of you who've never heard of Nanook, Thursday night's screening at the Film Archive is unmissable. Widely considered the first feature length documentary ever made (shot in 1922) it's an exceptional account of Inuit life on the ice.

    • Real-time Bus Information
      • I'm a big fan of real-time bus information - electronic signs that use GPS technology to tell you precisely when the next bus is coming, rather than having to rely on the theoretical arrival time of the printed timetable. These have been up and running in Auckland for a few years now, and when I was living there it made catching a bus just that much easier. So it's exciting to see that the Greater Wellington regional council are in the process of planning a real time bus info system.

    • Return of the Fleece!!
      • It all started with a joke that went too far in Salient last year, but with winter being unduly cruel this year, animals needing saving, and Wellingtonians needing to party in the warmest possible way, they couldn't help but bring it all back... VUWSA and the New Money Country Club present Polar Fleece Day II: Return of the Fleece.

    • Watch this AMAZING SHOW
      • Don't miss our current show STRIKE: ELEMENTAL, described as "amazing show" by Simon Sweetman. Founded in 1993 as a classically trained percussion ensemble, Strike has evolved into a high-energy drumming group combining movement and theatre-based performance. "Filled with movement, shadow, space, light, darkness, mime and - most gloriously - loud, clattering drums, Strike's ELEMENTAL is the best show I have seen from the talented quartet.

    • Duke Carvell's - A new, cosy and tucked away bar
      • It's easy to get a bit tired of going to the same old bars in the 'grid' of central Wellington. You know, sometimes you just want to have a quiet drink where you won't bump into everyone you know. Times like that, you need somewhere that's tucked away and a bit intimate. For this, Duke Carvell's, the new bar on Swan Lane where Imbibe used to be, is the ideal joint to visit.

    • Wagamama joins Mojo at Kumutoto
      • In what appears to be one of Wellington’s more anticipated restaurant openings for years, a branch of the international noodle bar Wagamama has opened in the Meridian building, and already queues are forming out the door: indeed, breaking all Australasian records for turnover in a first week, despite it being the middle of a very bleak winter. It evidently has been a phenomenal success.

    • A Performance of Elemental Proportions
      • Being rather old-school, I have quite the longstanding love for all things involving fire and brimstone. If you like a little raging inferno in your entertainment diet, then look no further than the return of drumming sensations, Strike, as they bring the thunder with their apocalyptic new show ‘Elemental,’ starting on the 3rd of July at Downstage theatre.

    • Without a Soul to Move - Book Launch, Saturday 5 July at Unity Books
      • Colorado born novelist William Dewey has roamed around New York, Montana and Colorado. But in 2007, he relocated to Wellington where he completed his intricately structured but elegantly written second novel Without a Soul to Move. Set in Denver over a swift ten days, the novel illustrates a slice of the lives of three men: Howie, who is haunted by an unrequited love; Wayne who is detached, and Adam who has his own ambitious plans.Dealing with themes of love, suffering, loss and absence during a bitter winter, Dewey's narrative is dazzling, clever and funny with a subtle and dry wit. The fifth release from fiercely independent Wellington publishing collective Lawrence and Gibson, Without a Soul to Move will be officially launched with wine and nibbles at Unity Books.Unity Books57 Willis Street5pmFree- Kiran
