My Brilliant Divorce Begins
- Downstage Theatre Blog
- With the first few days of rehearsal over, Ginette McDonald and Geraldine Brophy are getting into the swing of things. We now have a vague blocking of almost the entire show and Ginette is quickly memorising her lines, allowing her to truly dive into the rehearsals. A big task for a one woman show.

Courtenay loses some parks; gains a Park
- Eye of the Fish
- The Courtenay Place Park seems more-or-less finished now, having recently unveiled the second and final stage of it’s development. A very minimal and very urban park, it’s strengths lies in the quality of the finish and detailing, as well as the enhancement of pedestrian flow within this highly-traffic area.

Down but not out
- Texture
- Late last year, having only been open since the 1st of June, Taranaki St gem Cubita was closed by a fire (which also took out Burger Fuel). At the time, reports indicated it might not reopen due to a bit of an ambiguous insurance situation but I am pleased to tell you that Cubita is now ready for business, nearly four months after it first closed.

The Congestion Pricing Roadmap
- Eye of the Fish
- It seems that the roadmap to congestion pricing is itself congested: gridlocked by an array of obstacles and opinions. We have a $200k report/proposal, dense legal obstacles, technical challenges, a mayor that is “not even lukewarm”, and a public that is overwhelming against the issue. So what happens next? Nothing?

Participating stores are hosting a day of live music to revel in the beauty that is the local independent record store, and I’m delighted to inform you Wellington’s own Slowboat records on Cuba Street will be joining the party.

Life in the City
- The Wellingtonista
- I know we all love trolley buses (and can't wait for the flash new three-axle jobbies to start ripping it up along Kent Terrace) but this must have been horrendous to be involved in at 5.15 yesterday afternoon. And deeply amusing for those of NOT involved, of course.

Holy Smoke!
- The Wellingtonista
- The historic St Peters church, on the corner of Willis & Ghuznee St, is currently on fire. There are seven fire appliances and one ambulance attending the fire, and just now they seem to have stopped the smoke belching out of the doors and windows. More updates & photos as they come to hand... read more

Slowboat essential 50
- Texture
- Slowboat records is an absolute Cuba Street institution. I don't actually know how long it has been there, but I can't ever remember it not existing so as far as I know its old. In a good way. Everytime I go past I check out the awesome cardboard cut-out elvis in the window and smile to myself. In an ever changing Cuba Street, Slowboat has been the one constant.

It's how we're drinking
- The Wellingtonista
- Good to see the local hostelries promoting responsible drinking: tonight, Blend are not only offering $5 Jägerbomb tickets, but are hosting a "New Zealand Jägerbomb record attempt" at 9pm. I really don't envy the street cleaners who'll have to deal with Wakefield St tomorrow morning.

April means... Vodafone Homegrown
- Texture
- As of Friday morning there were only 500 tickets left for Vodafone Homegrown 2008. Considering 800 were snapped up by greedy little monkeys on Thursday, it’s a cinch this is going to be a sell-out. And why wouldn’t it be? Shihad, Kora, Minuit, Salmonella Dub, The Mint chicks, Phoenix Foundation, Tiki, Little Bushman, Concord Dawn, Die! Die! Die! The Black Seeds, Ladi6, and so much more!

Chew on this
- Eye of the Fish
- Chews Lane is open, today, at last. The development, under wraps (of sorts) for the last couple of years, has been opened back up to public view, at least on the ground floor. The historic Lane itself has been re-opened, and businesses are poised to open their doors.
