Planned cancellations in place for Metlink rail services bringing more certainty for passengers
- Metlink
- Metlink and Transdev Wellington have put in place a series of planned cancellations for the rest of this week to help manage staff shortages and bring more certainty to passengers on the region's rail network. Samantha Gain, General Manager for Metlink says her team is working around the clock to update timetables and information for passengers. "We appreciate that this is a difficult time for our passengers who have shown incredible patience and understanding towards the health and well-being of our rail staff and the important service they provide to our communities. We are working closely with Transdev Wellington to ensure we can have as many services running as possible with the number of staff available," says Ms Gain.

Metlink to slash off-peak fares, make weekends and public holidays free for children
- Metlink
- Off-peak fares on Metlink public transport services will be reduced and children will ride for free on weekends and public holidays, as part of a package of concessions agreed today by Greater Wellington. Fares are currently discounted by 25 percent to encourage off peak travel, but the regional council today agreed to increase the discount to 50 percent, which will also apply to concession holders. Greater Wellington Transport Committee Chair Roger Blakeley said he was pleased the council had adopted the recommendations of the Future Fares Subcommittee.

Our ghost airport: An opportunity to build much needed houses
- Low Carbon Kapiti
- By Paul Callister, 19 August 2022 After years of Kāpiti ratepayers subsidising a just a few passengers per day to fly out of Kāpiti airport, its closure in its current form gets closer. Diesel-to-electric bus conversion and Sky Stadium projects seek funding from Greater Wellington for low carbon initiatives
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- Greater Wellington’s Climate Committee has recommended that the regional council fund two projects aimed at lowering the regional council’s carbon footprint. Metlink has applied for funding to reduce bus emissions through a diesel-to-electric power bus conversion trial, and the Wellington Regional Stadium Trust applied for funding for a study into reducing Sky Stadium’s environmental footprint. Both were considered at today’s Climate Committee meeting. Metlink seeks $550,000 to convert a diesel-powered bus to electric power and trial its operation in the Metlink fleet.

Greater Wellington welcomes government backing of regional ownership of transport assets
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- Greater Wellington has strongly welcomed the announcement by Transport Minister Michael Wood of the new Sustainable Public Transport Framework. The announcement comes just over a year since Greater Wellington called, in its submission on the Public Transport Operating Model (PTOM), for significant change to bring transport assets under the control of regional councils to create greater flexibility in delivering quality public transport services. “We strongly held then, and still do, that for regional councils to be truly strategic in planning and providing world-class public transport, we need to have stronger control of critical infrastructure such as buses, depots and charging infrastructure,” says Greater Wellington chair Cr Daran Ponter.

Help shape better bus and bike trips from Newtown to the city
- Wellington City Council
- Plans to make it safer, easier and quicker to bus or bike around the city are among ways we are responding and working with the community to make those bigger changes possible. The Council approved the routes for Paneke Pōneke, a 10-year citywide bike network plan, in March this year. It had previously agreed work between Newtown and the city, and Botanic Garden ki Paekākā and the city, should be prioritised as part of a transitional rapid roll-out.
