It actually could be worse
- Architectural Centre Inc
- I just discovered this, and thought I’d share it with you all, as it is a topical image for today – the last day of submissions on NZTA’s proposals for transport improvements near the basin Reserve. If I had sighted it earlier I would have used it to threaten those of you who have not yet made submissions in a post entitled “Make your submission to NZTA or else…!”.

- Consultation on the NZTA’s solutions for “roading improvements” around the Basin and through to the Airport (the tail end of State Highway 1, if you will), closes today. I’ve been taking a bit of a back seat on this, watching from the sidelines as the alternative proposal put forward by the Architectural Centre “Option X” [...]

Vote X
- Architectural Centre Inc
- The Friday 26 August deadline for submissions to NZTA regarding the Wellington inner-city transport projects is getting closer. We believe this is an important issue for everyone to give feedback on. Option X will tunnel State Highway One under Memorial Park, providing a space which will respect our war dead, and allow reflection and commemoration.

It’s not just about transport. It’s about our city and the quality of our environment
- Wellington Scoop
- However you describe it, the 380-metre-long structure that the Transport Agency wants to build from Tory Street to the Mount Victoria Tunnel would change the Wellington cityscape forever, and not for the better. We’ve been wrong to describe it as a flyover. It’s much bigger than that. And the Transport Agency is wrong to describe it as a bridge. In reality it would be an elevated highway – which is an approach to road design from the early 20th Century that’s out of favour in most places.

Polls apart – the verdict on Option X is all good
- Architectural Centre Inc
- According to Warren Buffet, a public opinion poll is no substitute for thought. Therefore, I think that the results of the Capital Times Reader’s Poll are pretty encouraging for the Architectural Centre’s Option X scheme for the Basin Reserve:

Bus drivers, cyclists swap points of view
- Newswire.co.nz
- CRAIG Bush now knows what it’s like to have a 12-tonne bus bearing down on him on the road. He’s usually the one driving the bus, but in a road-awareness workshop in Kilbirnie he got to swap the safety of his driver’s seat for a cycle saddle. “I am used to having my rear vision mirrors,” he says. “Not being able to see cars until they were right behind me was intimidating.”

Basin flyover: another week of opposition
- Wellington Scoop
- It’s hard to find anyone who likes the NZ Transport Agency’s plans for a 380-metre-long flyover alongside the Basin Reserve. Starting at the Mt Victoria Tunnel, the structure would carry two lanes of vehicles above Ellice Street and Kent and Cambridge Terraces and discharge them at the Tory Street traffic lights. The flyover would be a dismal eyesore across the cityscape.

Basin flyover: the mayor opposes it, but what about the councillors?
- Wellington Scoop
- As Mayor Celia Wade-Brown continues her opposition to the Basin Reserve flyover, it’s sad that so few Wellington city councillors are showing similar concern. It’s equally lamentable that councillors aren’t protesting at the lack of democracy in the the planning process.
