Light Rail and Fresh Tunnels
- Eye of the Fish
- Let’s not pussyfoot around – Wellington needs a Rapid Transit system and that simply cannot be more buses. And it needs to be Rapid (like the name suggests) so it needs some new direct routes – that means new tunnels. Yes, plural: Tunnels.

Cycling Network
- Eye of the Fish
- What is the Cycling network based upon? It’s a bit of a quandary to me, because while in the online discussion form the WCC the other day, the designers were claiming that they had been studying the situation for years, looking which areas to link to which other areas, and this was the first time that they had gone to the step of actually showing Roads linking them.

Four upcoming submittals
- Eye of the Fish
- We are being asked to submit comments on four completely separate but highly important matters at the same time. If you thought that the run up to Christmas was getting tight for time this year, then get ready for it to be even more tight in terms of your time. Firstly, one you may not have been aware of: the proposal by KiwiRail and InterIslander to build new terminus stations in both Picton and Wellington, in order to tie in with the arrival of two new ferries due here in three years time. You can find out more about this proposal here. I’m not sure when they want the feedback by, but I’m sure that they want some feedback!

Metlink to trial new and free fares in the New Year
- Metlink
- Metlink announced today that it will be trialing a range of new fares in March next year, including free or heavily discounted fares on weekends. Details of the trial are yet to be fully developed but could include a range of discounted, bundled and even free fares on the region’s bus and train services. Scott Gallacher, General Manager for Metlink, says the trial will help provide valuable demand insight to help plan for growth and service design changes in the future as well as pave the way for new fare products as part of the introduction of integrated ticketing system.

LGWM: 3 Big Flaws
- Eye of the Fish
- Hi all. It’s been a long time since I’ve posted (feels like it could be ten years). But I’m back to raise some major flaws with the LGWM plans because this has been a near and dear subject to me over the past 20 years. None of these flaws appear to be necessary compromises forced by cost or other constraints. And it appears we could fix them without additional cost. If we do fix them, we’ll have a much better transit network for Wellington. We won’t get a shot to do this over, so we should do it right.

Getting rid of traffic
- Wellington Scoop
- Last week’s cautious city council move towards keeping traffic out of more of Cuba Street, and converting part of Dixon Street for pedestrians, should be welcomed by almost everyone, except for the few who still think that customers only arrive in cars. Councillors voted 11-3 to limit private vehicle access on Cuba Street between Ghuznee Street and Vivian Street, and on Dixon Street between Taranaki Street and Victoria Street.

Upgrading the Basin, but slowly
- Wellington Scoop
- One thing seems certain from this week’s LGWM announcement – there won’t be a flyover alongside the Basin Reserve. Undergrounding – to separate the two streams of traffic and create lots of new green open space – is on offer in three of the four options. The fourth option (surely no one wants it) is to leave the unpopular roundabout as is.
