Such a short tunnel
- Wellington Scoop
- One thought was obvious as we walked through the new tunnel under Buckle Street this morning. It’s so short. If only it had been extended under Taranaki Street. And under Cuba Street. And under Victoria Street. And under Willis Street.

Translating the Transport Agency
- Wellington Scoop
- We’ve all looked at some of the Transport Agency’s pronouncements over recent years and wondered what they really meant. Fear not, we’re here to save the day by translating their latest statement on the Basin Reserve flyover appeal – from High Bureaucratese into Plain English:

Basin Flyover Appeal: NZ Transport Agency Refuses To Learn From Past Mistakes
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- The Save the Basin Campaign has described the decision by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to appeal the Board of Inquiry decision declining consent for its proposed Basin Reserve flyover as an indictment of the Agency’s refusal to learn from its mistakes.

Bikes and buses – big problem with fast-tracked $11m plan for Victoria Street
- Wellington Scoop
- Expensive new plans for Victoria Street have failed to consider cyclists. Why do the concept plans show that the street will be rubbish for people on bikes? The City Council has committed $11million to fast track a re-design of three blocks of the street, between Dixon and Abel Smith Streets.

Three years of chaos: Wellington’s public transport plan, and how to fix it
- Wellington Scoop
- Since the Transport Agency’s Basin Reserve flyover plan was cancelled, there’ve been claims that it has thrown Greater Wellington’s Public Transport Plan into chaos. In fact the plan has been in chaos much longer: at least three years. The 2014 plan has been approved but is in reality a train-wreck. Dramatic improvements in public transport usually need institutional change, which is now clearly essential in Wellington.

Runway extension will create significant direct economic benefit for New Zealand and cut traveling time by up to 30 percent
- Connect Wellington (Wellington Airport campaign)
- Extending Wellington Airport’s runway will deliver up to $1.75 billion in direct economic benefits to New Zealand’s economy by 2060 and slash international travelling time by up to a third according to a new report. The economic impact report undertaken by consultancy, EY, shows the direct economic benefit to the Wellington region, between 2020 and 2060, will be up to $684 million in today’s dollars. Wellington Airport Chief Executive, Steve Sanderson, says “the extension would enable the next generation wide-bodied jets to link Wellington with the rapidly expanding Asian market and to North America, growing the number of international visitors to New Zealand and increasing our ability to offer new and more accessible visitor experiences.”
