Mind the gap
- Jack Yan
- People have rightly asked me my positions on transport, the environment, the Basin Reserve flyover, and libraries. These weren’t put in my manifesto in April 2013 because I assumed that they would not be hot election issues, and that candidates (whomever they might be—since only Dr Keith Johnson had declared then) would have largely [...]

- Rimutaka Incline Railway
- Photo: what could be: sister Ab locomotive on a passenger train at Kaitoke in 1953. Photo: Nelson Stockbridge. The Trust has signed an agreement with The Taranaki Flyer Society for RIRHT to take over steam locomotive Ab 745, currently located at Stratford. The Taranaki Flyer Society is closing up and have offered the locomotive to us "free to a good home".

The Failure of Australasian Conservative Governments on Transport
- Wellington Region Cycleways
- Excuse me this post. I am an Australian living in New Zealand (yes the opposite of the normal story. I’m part of the backwash.) But it’s worth keeping an eye on what is happening west of the Tasman as what is happening in New Zealand is happening in Australia too. In what sounds awfully familiar, […]

Nice frequent transport map of Wellington
- Wellington Region Cycleways
- I came across this handsome map by Brett Palmer entitled Wellington City Frequent Transport. Comparing it to the proposed bus network coming soon it looks that the only change needed on this map is a new line to Brooklyn and Kingston.

Handle with Care- the Case for the Wellington Runway Extension
- Sarah Free
- Like many, I was initially enthusiastic about the idea of direct flights from Wellington to somewhere in Asia. After all, who hasn’t arrived back from a long haul flight to Auckland inwardly groaning at the thought of checking through customs, grabbing baggage and having to transfer to the domestic terminal for yet more waiting, before […]

Opus and the flyover
- Wellington Scoop
- It’s evident that the Wellington consulting company Opus is being employed to give substantial support to the Transport Agency’s plan for a flyover alongside the Basin Reserve. This is shown by the fact that of the 21 technical reports commissioned by the Agency in favour of the flyover, ten of them were written by Opus.

International Take a Sickie and Ride Your Bike Day
- Wellington Region Cycleways
- Historically many cities have Ride a Bike to Work Days. Wellington has had them before (and is having another one in February I think). Washington DC too. They are generally good fun, and you might get a good breakfast, meetup with a few thousand other cyclists and still get to work on time. For the […]

What Riddiford Street could look like
- Wellington Region Cycleways
- This is definitely worth drawing attention to. As I said on my post about the Island Bay cycle routes I am of the opinion that there should be separated cycleways up Adelaide Road and up Riddiford Street (amongst many others). At the Sexify Blog they’re much of the same opinion, at least about Riddiford Street. […]

What the owners didnt know: unsafe care, unsafe driving, unsafe buses
- Wellington Scoop
- It’s taken an audit and a court case to uncover flaws in the organisation of two big companies which provide important services to Wellingtonians. One of the companies has admitted it was at fault. The other one (“we’re not perfect”) is denying responsibility.

The Capital choking on traffic congestion due to the RoNSzi scheme
- Wellington Region Cycleways
- Today there was a bit of a hoo haa in the local press about the Arup and Opus report that the Greater Wellington Council commissioned on the effects of the RoNS on the Wellington region, but then embarrassingly the GWRC has been trying to ignore ever since. It seems that the Airport to Levin corridor […]

“We’re not perfect”
- Wellington Scoop
- “We’re not perfect,” says the CEO of NZ Bus, Zane Fulljames. This was after a second series of faults had been found in his Wellington buses. His words (for some reason they remind me of the last scene in Some Like It Hot) are being widely repeated. But it’s no joke. It’s the second time his company has been shown to be less than perfect. In May, there were four weeks of disruptions after his buses were pink-stickered because they were unsafe. Wasn’t everything supposed to have been fixed by now?

Congestion choking
- Eye of the Fish
- The DomPost today reported that an Opus report on possible future road congestion, was completed in December (now 9 months ago), but has “not yet reached the Regional Council table” ie Greater Wellington.
